Thank you, Patron Lady of the Roadways, I've safely returned my gas vehicle to Hertz Rent A Car with no misadventures or calamities, despite my forsaking the brake pedal for many years. Kudos to St Eligius, the Patron Saint of the Gas Station, for I only had to feed my vehicle two times at the Oasis of Thornton's. And St Hertz, thank you for not double charging me for the EV that you yourself cancelled. Upon my return, the staff took my keys with nary a question and so I've raised my review to four stars. I do take issue, however, with the way a fellow customer was treated. They announced that they had to call the customer's bank and they proceeded to do so via speakerphone. I heard the entire transaction, from entering all the digits (heard every beep), heard the robotic answers, etc. I was sitting at least 10 ft away. They could have taken the call off speakerphone. read more

This is the most horrible place to rent. I reserved a cargo van a week in advance, but three days later the manager called and canceled. He offered no replacement, and refused to issue a refund. He put it on me to call customer service, but they don't answer. I went to the office to talk to the manager, but he refused to help, and said he can do nothing for me. As of now, I'm without a car and without money. The only thing I got is the unfriendly attitude of the manager who CLEARLY doesn't care!!! I will never consider Hertz for rental again!!! Reserved and pre-paid for a vehicle 3 weeks in advance for this location. Even received a reminder e-mail from Hertz 2 days before the the pickup date not to forget that I have a reservation. When I got there manager Matthew Clemons said that he doesn't have the vehicle. That's all he said, that he doesn't have the vehicle. He didn't show any remorse nor did he offer to upgrade or to locate one for me or to refund my money. It was my problem and not his and he had nothing else to say. Had to call Hertz customer service to get my money back. Took them ten days to credit my card. Will never bother to rent not only from this location but from a non-caring company like Hertz. From this location I went to a different rental company and not only was I able to get a vehicle immediately without even a reservation, but was treated politely and professionally, unlike this pace. read more

I have rented cars from this place for months for weekend trips. Rented a car from here over the weekend. When I got there they said they have no cars and for me to call and find another hertz with cars. They said they had none and cannot do anything for me. Manager Scott and Matthew told me it was not his responsibility or problem to help. He giggled in my face about this topic and thought it was funny. Told me they would not call other hertz or take action to help me get a rental. Terrible place to rent from. Would not recommend. Called hertz customer serve and they found a extra car in des plains faster then these Bozo could looking thought there phone. They don't care or want to help. Communication skills are not the best. They only took action after I called customer service and talked to a representative in front of these manager. Entire office smells like cigarettes as well. This location has gone down the drain over the last few months. Was renting from here monthly for out of town trips. Definitely will never be back again read more

Made a reservation for an SUV 2 weeks in advance. Taking 4 adults and baby from IL to VA. Get call morning of date scheduled from Hertz rep stating he will do best to find a car but there aren't any cars around..long story short, was stranded in IL, never heard back from him that day, the next day, etc...not sure how this business is still in business if they cannot honor a reservation made well in advance! Had to split up family and pay ridiculous amount for some of the party to fly and 2 of us drove my car which wasn't big enough for everyone. Thanks for the huge inconvenience and extra expense Hertz! Horrible mistreatment of customers. Manager Mr. Brett Gauger insisted that customer is fully responsible if the car has complete mechanical break down the moment I leave the parking lot. (which turned out not to be truth) He voided the fully paid contract at the branch on the morning we supposed to leave for vacation and refuse to refund the money. I have a recording of the conversation in case the management would be interested to resolve it. After reading other bad reviews I now understand I should read the reviews before... I would give 0 stars if I could. We had a CONFIRMED reservation for a large SUV. The night before our trip, someone called to say they could not fulfill our reservation. Why reserve and confirm a car if the reservation/confirmation is not honored?? We asked to speak to a manager for help; the manager never called back. Hertz ruined our vacation and did not care. booked reservation through insurance claim. arrived at 830am, w/no other customers there, so check in was quick, easy and painless. requested online reservation mazda, and no available, so ended up w/ford. car was just washed when we picked up. they offered options which i declined. returned car 4 days later @ 4:30 and discover the tiniest chip in windshield, which we never noticed and could've been there when we picked up car & never saw, since car was washed and all wet. as result of that, we were given benefit of the doubt & NOT charged to windshield damage. read more

Also, on returning the car, I was told the tank was not full and was told to go to the nearest gas station to fill it. It barely took 1 gallon of gas! Again, no thank you! Poor experience, and I hadn't even rented a car from here yet. I tried calling numerous times to the location only to have the phone ring for minutes with no answer until the call would just unexpectedly end!? No voicemail or automated operator service. After reading other reviews, I'm not sure I will be calling for a 5th time trying to get a rental booked. Yay for being really close to me. Double yay for running great specials. This allows me to pick up a car here to take to the airport . See YAi exorbitant limo fees ! No more begging friends for that gawdaful early airport run, or risking my own car in the airport garage (or paying sky high daily garage fees!) I have paid as little as $19, average about $39 but never paid more than $50 for a one way airport rental, even to Midway. Parking is HORRIBLE. Even if you are getting dropped off to pick up a car, this location is incredibly inconvenient. It shares a building with the very busy At&T store, and there are only about 12 places TOTAL, including the spots where the rental cars are parked. If all the spots are full, the lot is arranged so that you may have to back out onto Skokie Rd, or just sit in the middle until someone else comes out. Blech. read more

Worst customer service! Do not rent from this location. I made reservation online and showed up at Hertz to pick up my rental. I was told by the manager that they had no cars and I would have to wait until a car showed up. They offered no other solutions, were rude and never apologized!! Made a reservation for 10:00. they couldn't get our car until 1:00. The manager asked me,"When you rent a car, don't you check to see if they have a car?" Well, no, I've rented lots of cars and never thought I had to do that. They close at 6. We were going to be about 5 minutes late to return the car, I called and asked if we could leave the car and put the keys in the drop. They charged us for another day rather than try to help us out. This has the look of a privately owned franchise, not too well capitalized and very hungry to get every penny they can, customer relations be damned. While I was being told reservations really don't mean anything to them an elderly couple was being badgered to take the rental insurance even though the gentleman said three times his insurance carrier said they were covered. Cannot say enough about the service and professionalism at this location. Everyone I've dealt with has been accommodating and friendly. My most recent rental began with me coming in to pick up a car and changing my mind about 4 times in 5 minutes about which car I wanted. Manager Gaston handled all this with a smile and I left happily in the car I wanted. Unfortunately for me Gaston is moving to the Naperville location in a few days. HP's loss is Naperville's gain. The manager Chris is a grouchy, miserable person. Clearly either hates his job or his whole life. Makes promises and then breaks them. Rented a vehicle that died in the middle of a highway. Could not get the car into gear to get it out of the way on a 2 lane section. Thought I was going to get killed. Had to get out of the car and wave vehicles over. What a place! Everything about this place is great. From the cleanliness of the car, to the service staff, to the gentleman who helped me get my car (manager Joe), everything was as promised. This is not the typical rent-a-car facility with a DMV mentality, it was, in fact, an enjoyable process, with efficiency and understanding of peoples situations. Let me tell you, they will work with you to make you happy in their rental cars. Here's a tip, don't call the 800-number for a car rental call their office direct. Like I said, they will work with you and they will get you the best deal out there, promise. Also, if you belong to AAA, don't forget to flash your membership card and ask for discount. If I could give it 0 stars I would ! I rented a minivan for a 12 day vacation from this location. I booked it at least a month in advance, so I had a great rate, and made sure there was availability. I arrived and guess what they gave my car away!!!!! And had no interest in helping to figure out a solution to their mistake. Other than offering me a RAV. They claimed they called me, but that was not true. Thank goodness for Avis. They came to my rescue with a 7 seat SUV, although it was more expensive than my original reservation. We showed that our appointment was at 1:00 to pick it up and the man said "I'm not helping you. I'm finishing helping this guy and leaving. You should have been here at 1:00". Rented a car from Hertz because that is where State Farm would pay for a rental. We were very upset when we were charged $30 for tolls that we paid for with our own I Pass which added up to $3.00. We were told that the transponder in the car was not activated. I would not trust this location, this is a scam. read more

Hertz normally is pretty consistent. This location in highland park IL however, is quite possibly the most puzzling of all considering the staff. Hertz is a large company that has lots of $$$ and sure can afford to pay its employees well and supply fairly decent vehicles. We were given a nice new Camry to drive after we insisted on a bigger car than the "assistant branch manager" was pushing on us. His manager finally told him to give us the new car. Employees make your business what it is. Good or bad they are the face of your company. This location has no real employees just some rude clown who hasn't a clue about anything and takes rude to a whole new level. My question to Hertz is, how does this guy keep his job? SMH...if it wasn't for the proximity and half way decent wheels, the location wouldn't be worth it unless you are into self abuse with this staff. This office was awful! Staff were very short to the point of rudeness. We were assigned a nice car but the outside was not clean and finish full of bugs. When we complained they said something was wrong with their car wash. Later, after we had driven away, we found trash under the seats. The day before we were to return the car, we were hit from behind, causing a small sent and some scratches on the bumper. We called our insurance company, but this office was so rude in trying to help resolve this, stating they were working on other reservations. Never had such an experience with Hertz. Just avoid this location. read more
