In a way, I am GLAD to see other folks having issues with the IBM road Poughkeepsie location and their staff. I drove Magazines and Very Old Books from NY to OK in one of their rentals.. Magazines and books...Returned the car a day early and was told I was going to be charged $400 for PET HAIR... Well, we took pics and video...Before and after spending a whopping $2 to vacuum up the 13 "hairs" we found on the back seat (I had no passengers at all during my 3k mile trip..just books and mags and epherma)..returned and the car "passed their inspection" This has been escalated to corporate. Best I can figure is since the rental was CHEAP they were trying to gauge me for another $400. Not this guy....If you are used to being thanked for your business and asked how they can serve you in the future, AVOID THIS LOCATION AT ALL COSTS.. I was then charged $700 for a chip on the windshield that they were unable to provide me a photo showing it wasn't there prior to returning the vehicle. I needed to rent a car for a couple days while mine was in the repair shop. I called the 800 number on the back of my AAA card. After a 25 minute wait on "Hold" I finally got someone whose English proficiency was less than adequate at the Poughkeepsie office. I was told they do not deliver cars AND they do not pick you up to take you to the rental agency. That's why I am renting a car. I'm not at an airport where I can just drive away. UPDATE: So when Hertz tried to charge 2280.00 on my credit card I had finally had enough. My credit card looked at the charge as fraud and promptly shut down my card, so 3 cards have been demolished with false charges and counting. Called the national Hertz number and was told there are multiple complaints for fraudulent charges and bad customer service from this particular office. Hertz is supposed to refund the extraneous charges but 3 days and nothing because it has to come from THIS office. NATIONAL HERTZ actually suggested to use any other site but this one in the future. Now that's really concerning from the National office! Let's see if I actually get my refund. By the way Hertz is looking at a multiple million dollar law suit for extraneous charges and faulty AI damage reports....rent at your own risk. read more

Recently rented a Mazda CX50 there to take to Florida and back. Staff were pleasant, the car rental rate was $180 for the week. The car was clean and I had no issues. I do recommend buying the insurance on the spot there. Poughkeepsie has a lot of traffic and the prospect of getting dended is higher than most places. I didn't actually need to use it but was happy to have it. I don't understand the one star ratings I see. I was happy with the price because I booked far in advance and the people were very nice. read more

I rent cars from this Hertz while traveling within the Northeast for work. I live nearby and they allow me to leave my car there while I use my rental. Great rate and I love that they have a full fleet of Teslas and other electric vehicles. The team there is always great to work with. I walk in to pick up a reserved car for ubering Csr says she only has electric cars.. I was cool with the Chevy bolt offered. Idk what happened but she attempted to look at the Tesla keys and see if one could be rented. I watched and Waited patiently. After about 30 mins, she tells em she doesn't have any cars to rent out. 0 stars. Small context I am an under 25 driver I came in fully prepared that there would be some hiccups due to the age and it being my first time renting a car. Hiccup is an understatement. Staff was incredibly rude from start to finish, you can't even get a word in without a snarky comment and an incompetent manager who refused to believe their employees need training in costumer service. All while their phone rings and rings in the background and none of them care to answer. Went in for an EV car since it was the cheapest option was told it was considered a sports car meaning no young drivers. Nowhere on the hertz website did it say an EV was considered a sports/luxury car. We did research in hopes of avoiding this. "Young renters are excluded from renting certain specialty vehicles and from renting from the Dream Car® collection, Prestige collection, and the Adrenaline Collection®." But you know whatever, not this specific location's fault the company refuses to specify and allows bookings that can trick young drivers into reservation cars they are not allowed to get. The employee, Sam, offered the next lowest rated car which was more than double then my original reservation but again not their fault the website is misleading. We were told it'd be "$260-270" and that was that, I put my card in and go to wait for the car. Then I get notified my card was charged $475. I went back to ask why was I charged nearly $500 when I was told $260 and that's when a simple "sorry I didn't mention there was a $200 deposit" would have been enough instead I'm immediately met with hostility and condescension. "Most people know about a deposit." "I can tell people there's a deposit and they say ok" "I told you there was a deposit go get your little friend back in here and ask her" Common curtesy is to tell someone how much you are charging them, fees and all. I explained that and instead of again a simple apology he threatened to cancel the entire reservation instead. After a lot of back and forth and pettiness I haven't seen since high school from this location's staff I was able to leave with a car that cost me over 5x the price I reserved online. The cherry on top was the employee Sam offered to help us change our drop off location if we called the store as a way to better the whole situation. Turns out as mentioned earlier they don't believe in answering their phone. All calls are left ringing til it drops or someone on the other line hangs up. First time renting and probably last time rather just drive my own car 20 something hours if it means avoiding lazy and rude staff like this. read more

Terrible experience. This is the second time, I was hoping the first time was a fluke but this place is just terrible. I had a rental scheduled for pick up at 10:30am, when I called at 9am to confirm they told me it was moved to 12pm. I was very accepting and said okay. I get there at 12, they tell my husband it's 12, we're closed. Now why would you schedule a pick up for 12pm KNOWING you close at 12. The staff just stared at me thru the door shortly after 12, when I went to figure out what was going on, the guy inside says it's after 12, we're closed.....we were here at 12 and told the store was closed. They just continued to stare at me through the door. It would have killed them to accommodate me considering THEY changed the pick up time, but they didn't. They wouldn't even explain why or work a few extra minutes to get it situated. They shut off the lights and handed me a worldwide number. I ended up going next door to get a rental much cheaper and was told I was the FIFTH person to come in because of Hertz LAZINESS. Absolutely pathetic. This satellite Hertz location is a bit gritty. The customer service counter is stunning in its Newark Airport circa 1981 decor. Employees are quite helpful and do their best to provide good service as they are baked alive in the direct sunlight of the front window. The single wall mounted AC unit struggles unsuccessfully to control the temperature. As a satellite location they do not have all the services and offers of airport locations. No automated kiosks at this 8' x 10' customer area, "Gold" members stand in line and bake in the sunlight like everyone else, and there are few "cool" cars available. I'll just get in my geriatric Oldsmobuick and shaddup. Still better than the AVIS location next door, where the only decision is which color PT Cruiser you would like to rent. They do have a good number of Toyota's (including full sized hybrids) some Subaru's and of course stuff from GM. Recently a sweet new Mercedes arrived from an airport location; but all the keystrokes in the world could not rent it, they are not allowed to contract "Prestige" vehicles. Driving past the place might worry you a bit since employees and some renters park their personal vehicles in the front row. On my first rental I wondered if I would get stuck with the lime green 1992 Dodge Neon. Whew! Folks at the counter skillfully input 20,000+ keystrokes on those weird computers to acquire the best rate or figure out why your reservation has completely vanished from their system. I should say most of the service reps are good, a couple will try their best to up-sell you on everything by playing on your fears "are you sure want to decline this completely unnecessary and likely illegal in NY non-insurance that does nothing to further protect you from anything, but will set you back another $24.99 per day? Is that really what you want to do sir? What about a car seat? I mean what if you find a baby in the road? Wouldn't you want to make it comfy? How about a never lost then?" From past experience I do usually get the LDW when renting from Hertz. They are known for the "We found a scratch after you rented from us so are charging your credit card $379.00 to get it fixed, and another $250 for loss of use, and so on. . ." 4 Stars for good experiences with the staff here. Worst experience ever! Visiting in Poughkeepsie for the weekend, I reserved the car, setting 6pm as the pick up time. Well, it turns out they close at 6pm, so by the time I called (at 6:30) to let them know I was running late, they were already closed. I had no idea. I called them the next day at 11:30am, letting them know they should warn people about their closing time. They said they still had a car for me and I could pick it up later in the day. Guess what? By the time I showed up (2:30pm) they were already closed! They close at 1pm on Saturday! I would have really appreciated it if the guy on the phone said "oh yeah, we close in 2 hours". Let me just say that Zero (well, that's his nickname) has always helped me out. The first time I came here he was out of cars, but managed to rent a Ford Mustang to me in about 5 or 10 minutes. When I walked in today, I'm sure I looked a little frazzled from taking the train from Grand Central, but he was just as helpful. I asked him if he was the guy that was here a few months back, and if he had the "zero" tattoo in katakana. He responded with, "Yea, that was me. I've lost a lot of weight since then." Supposed to be picked up at 8am, confirmed yesterday, I am waiting outside my house and no one shows. I call to make sure they're almost here around 8:10am and a woman on the phone tells me no one has left yet and nothing has been set up for me yet. No explanation. & It was like pulling teeth trying to get that information from her too. I had to keep asking her "did they even leave yet? When should I expect them? Soon? Hours from now? When?!" She tells me I will get a text with the ETA from the taxi and that they "are like uber." How does that help me? How unorganized and unclear all of this sounds. Very frustrating, wouldn't you agree? (By the way, the text I got never gave me an ETA; it just said it would be here "soon"). Then we hang up and I get a call 5 minutes later from a man, likely the manager, telling me they were "so busy all of a sudden" and wanted to know if we could make the appointment later. I couldn't because I had a dentist appointment later this morning, plus I was all ready to go! He says someone will be here in 20 minutes. This is our 4th or 5th rental in the past few months and each time this location has gone above and beyond and really restored the meaning of "good customer service". Christina at this location took care of us and got us in and out quickly and with a smile. The location was busy with several people waiting and cars going in and out. There was a lot of activity as you might imagine on a Friday afternoon but this did not stop her from being kind, smiling and making us feel like we were the only customers there. She walked us to the vehicle, answered questions all while keeping a positive attitude. We were very pleased with Christina and wanted the company to know that she should be considered a valued employee. Thank you for making this a pleasant experience and we will be back. read more

This is a Hertz location that is most inflexible. In all my travels throughout the world, this one location takes the cake in its lack of desire to give upgrades readily. Sure you will likely get the one car (basic) upgrade if you are a gold or five star or President circle member. BUT, even when there's a full lot of cars just sitting there for days unrented, this location will NEVER UPGRADE you to a premium car or small SUV from full size, like all other locations fo. The managers here just want you to pay up, regardless of your years of loyalty. This does not create loyalty to this location, but luckily, 98% others are highly flexible and generous. This one is only interested in more dollars, zero loyalty building. The managers are complacent, perhaps because they get lots of traffic from IBM next door. I would rather go next door to Budget/Avis than return here. read more

I am truly surprised at the 2 positive reviews of this location. I have been to this location numerous times and the ONLY time where it was a smooth rental is when my insurance company took care of anything because of my car being repaired from an accident I had. The staff here are clueless and dishonest - they charge you a much higher 'hold' than other companies and have a very poor car selection to choose from. They are very non-negotiable on return times and are just not a great place to rent from in the area in general. Even though their daily rates are a bit higher, make the trip to Enterprise. Made several calls between corporate Avis and this location each claiming the other needs to release the $312. Finally the local agency agreed to call my bank to remove the hold. read more

First, the building is not the greatest but that's fine. The gear shift on the car had a problem going past reverse into drive or park, but that's fine. However, when I returned the car on Sunday after they closed, there was no one there to check me in. As a result, no one verified the amount of gas in the car. I went to get my reserved car. There were five people waiting for cars. They said that some cars were due to be returned soon. I was told that the reservation system lets you book cars even if they are over booked. I got an idea, if you see you are over booked call me and tell me you can't help me. Even though I am a five star gold member they said that it would be first come first serve if the cars came back. They wanted me to take a pickup truck. Someone in front of me got a car. It said that he would owe $1200 when he returned it. He freaked out. They told him, "Don't worry what the paper work says we noted it in the computer." I rent from this location frequently and I am always extremely pleased with the rental experience. The staff here is really great and super friendly. They go out of their way to ensure the customer is completely satisfied. The newly renovated rental office is also very inviting, and so much better than the old office. They have also increased the staff at this location which helps get you in and out in your rental in a flash. I consider Hertz Poughkeepsie to be my exclusive car rental agency in Dutchess County. Pickup car at LGA at 5:45 pm on Monday 6/6/2016. The NYS registration sticker and Vehicle inspection sticker were mounted 8 inches higher on the windshield. They were in my field of view for the 2+ hour home. The Hertz employee who installed the stickers made it easier for himself, but made the car a nightmare to drive. My previous rental experience at this location was great, as was my pick up experience this time around, however; the customer service I received when returning a car this weekend was poor at best. I experienced allergy symptoms the entire time I had the car, which I assumed was due to a cleaning product used in the car - which proved to be the opposite when I opened the trunk on my return trip and saw that it was covered in dog hair (and drool which was all over the back of the rear seats - gross). I brought this to the attention of the employees upon my return and was pretty much ignored. The employee who checked the car offered a weak apology and nothing else - acknowledging the hair when asking another employee for the tool to clean it out with. When I asked if the cars were cleaned between rentals, which this one clearly was not, I received a "yeah, they are cleaned." End of discussion, I guess. Unfortunate since the location is convenient and has good prices, but not worth sneezing and itching while sitting in someone else's dirt. read more

They charged me a cleaning fee on a perfectly clean car! Scam! They are giving me hassles with recovering the money. The car was driven from the airport, stopped to drop home my luggage, and brought it to this location for drop-off. It was after hours, so I dropped the key in the slot with paperwork. Get my bill, and huge charge. They don't have any explanation written for what was "dirty." The car was not smoked in, nothing spilled, nothing even left inside!
