This hertz is ok. They try to upsell you on everything. It's really dirty as well. They did provide us a free upgrade to a bigger car after they over-rented their economy grade cars. Funny thing is the sales guy was trying to sell us that car for 20 dollars more. We eventually resisted long enough and the sales guy caved in and gave us the upgraded sedan for free. The sedan was this beat up and had lots of dents and scratches. Be sure to check the car carefully! read more

Worst customer service I've experienced anywhere in Michigan, and honestly anywhere east of the Mississippi. I've spent a significant amount of money here, yet I'm consistently treated in a condescending manner. I'm not sure why the staff seem so frustrated, but I've been made to feel uncomfortable simply for choosing to rent here. On multiple occasions, I've waited hours for a car, received defective vehicles, or made reservations only to arrive and find no car available. This location made me feel very uncomfortable. I strongly encourage Hertz to invest more in customer service training. At this point, I'd rather pay more to go elsewhere. read more

Rented an EV for the week. The first Tesla was a red one, it had some pieces of the steering wheel gone, it had pieces of the interior trim that was all coming off or was never properly seated and the tires were completely bald too. Not a safe ride at all. The vehicle upon further time inside of it was absolutely unacceptable for a rental. We took it back the next day, but they didn't have any other Teslas to replace it with at all. First we were sent to Plymouth to take it back. We had to go all the way to the airport to get another Tesla to replace the original rental agreement. My husband reached out to Hertz via email to let them know about the first unsuitable rental. This place is a scam, I rented a car for 11 days, the manager (he was bald-beware of him) spent 15 minutes to try and upsell me insurance, even though I had my own. I politely declined, then the female employee tried to scare me into buying it. I still declined. I rode off with my car, only to find out that they scammed and snuck in insurance and premium roadside assistance to my policy for 11 days. The cost came out more than double the cost of my actual rental cost, I found out after I returned my car and saw it on my credit card bill. Horrible! Erian who worked at the front counter was extremely kind, patient and helpful. So this isn't in any relation to her. Upon renting the car...the gas was less than half a tank. That's frustrating, when you are going on a trip and renting a car the tank should be full. It's honestly the little things that matter, and this is one of those little things. The car itself was dirty inside and outside. It's not fun to start your trip inside a dirty car. As we were driving and the windshield was getting dirty with bugs and dust...went to use the windshield wipers and there was absolutely NO fluid. The car itself felt like its gears had been shredded or it hasn't been inspected....no horsepower And when trying to get onto the freeway (twice) it started sputtering while going 45 miles per hour. 1) We had a car reserved and paid for on 12/26/19 and arrived to pick it up by 8:00 that morning. No one was there. We waited and called the 1-800 number and got no help. After about two hours of waiting in the parking lot and calling various Hertz numbers, we were able to cancel our rental and were told we would get a refund. 2) It is now 1/31/20 and after being told on three different occasions that our money would be refunded we are having to go through our credit card company to get our money back. 3) After not showing up so we could pick up our rental and repeatedly lying about our refund, one would think that Hertz would show some level of concern. It typically takes customer service a week to respond and then it has always been the same lie about getting our refund. In their defense, they did offer a $50 coupon for our next rental. read more

This Hertz is the WORST, the manager either isn't available when I call or he ignores my e-mail. Hertz owes me money for a gas fuel charge that they should have never charged me with. I have had TWO (out of three) bad experiences with this branch. The first bad experience I thought was maybe a fluke and I would give them another chance. The latest bad experience is unbelievable- upon arrival I was given a dirty car. The car ran well, etc. no complaints there. When I returned my car, however, there was nobody available to help with the return (making me late and causing an inconvenience). Finally, I gave my paperwork and keys to the young man at the counter and thought we were all set, the car was CLEANER than when I brought it back and the tank was full. When I received my statement from Hertz I see that they charged me $90.00 in gas and service, WHAT?!?!? I've spent an hour trying to get somebody, anybody to help me via phone and they can't do anything until Monday. So, Hertz is borrowing $90.00 (that I need) until Monday. It must be nice being a giant corporation that can take money at will. The operators were very rude and kept hanging up on me. The actual (brick and mortar) branch doesn't answer the phone. How is this place still in business? I know, by charging bogus fees and holding on to the money for days at a time! What a scam!!! Do not rent from this branch- do yourself a favor and rent from a different company. If it has to be Hertz, the Ferndale branch is much better. If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. I am a long-time Hertz Five Star member and I needed a car for a business trip. This is the closest location to my house so it was convenient. I showed up to pick up my car and they had lobby full of people. There were only 2 employees working and one apparently had to go to another location to drop off keys. WTF? You're going to send 1/2 of your team on a boondoggle with customers waiting? I waited probably an hour to get a car (because a few people left, pissed off). Unbelievable. The day before we left they called me 30 minutes before pick up telling me I had to be back by 1pm.... well Priceline doesn't tell you that. NOT my problem. DO NOT RENT CARS HERE. I rented a car here and drove it to Akron, OH. Before I rented the car, the lady walk around the car and did not inspect carefully - she simply walked around and marked whatever she saw that might be considered as a former damage. After 4 hours driving, I arrived at Hertz in Akron, OH. Once I got off the car, the inspector told me that there is a crack with a diameter of 0.35 inches on the windshield located right above the driver's seat. I knew the "crack" was there the whole time when I was driving, but the crack looked like a piece of black color dirt... I did not pay attention to it at all, neither did the inspector in Hertz, Royal Oak, MI. The inspector in Akron, OH encouraged me to walk to the counter with him. And then, he gave the car key to another staff, who drove the car away. I was hungry and exhausted, so I did not take pictures of that car, and since this was the first time I rented a car, the people at the counter took advantage of me. Once I walked to the counter, I was told that I was charged for $300 for the entire windshield replacement...........I did not have the chance to argue. I asked them to give me a copy of the inspection sheet...they refused. I asked them to let me take a picture of the car...they refused. WHOA, did I just got scamed? What they did was totally harassment and unprofessional. They are probably not going to replace the entire windshield. Since the crack is as small as a piece of dirt, they will just fill it up. read more

It's a very fast pace environment, but that doesn't mean the workers should be rude. When you walk in it's not a "Hello, what can I help you with" it's more so "What are you here for." Horrible customer service. I arrived on time to pick up my car, a weekend minivan rental, and had to wait half an hour for the one woman working the desk to get to me, and then I had to wait another half hour for the guy in back to clean the car, which hadn't been done while I'd been waiting. The vehicle had less than half a tank of gas, even though I was told it was full after they handed me the keys, but at that point I just wanted to get out of there, so I didn't say anything. I went to drop off the car on Sunday evening, but the after hours drop-box was taped shut and marked out of service. There was a hand-written note on the window advising customers to drop their vehicles off at a location four miles away, which would have meant paying an Uber to drive me home. I then showed up first thing Monday morning and joined the four other weekend renters waiting for the office to finally open, which it did fifteen minutes late. I show up around one, and the place is closed with a sign on the door saying we close at 1230 today... Don't bother! 7:30 a.m reservation, as I was renting the car to be able to get to work. Employee showed up at 7:35, now effectively making the person who dropped me off there late as well as they had to wait. After I walked in, she went to the back for another 5 minutes and when she finally came out told me she didn't have any cars. I explained that I had just gotten dropped off and had no way to get to work, her compassionate response: "I can't make a car appear for you." When I walked out I said "If you had been on time, my ride could have waited with me for a minute. I'm not trying to be a jerk.." and she cut me off and said "But you're being one. So have a nice day." WOW. When I told her I'm sure her manager would be proud to hear how she treated people she proudly said, "Go ahead, be sure to tell her my name is Chantinique" The last thing I told her was that I wished I had her schedule and could show up to work late but I couldn't. Do not rent from this place. The staff is not trained to answer questions about their product, neither are their telephone operators. We were given a filthy car: the windows had so much grime on them that when we tried to shoot video or take photos, the picture was foggy! The GPS unit, what a joke. First I was offered it at no charge, but then when it didn't work the MANAGER there told me it would only work via satellite and they need to email some body....it was B.S. Why offer a free service just to take it away? But then on the road, it would turn on by itself, very distracting because it's dark and it lit up the whole car. Wouldn't shut off. Called about that too: nobody could help me. Ridiculous. The staff here could care less about you or your time or the car they rent you. When picking up my rental car at 7:30AM (I called the day before to make sure one was available,) they proceeded to tell me to take the car to get an oil change on my way to work. "No worries," Jeremy said; "it'll only take 10 minutes." EXCUSE ME? You want me to take a car that I am renting to go get serviced? Absolutely not. I refused and was put in a pickup truck instead. Wow thanks. So then two days later, I check my bank account. A $362 charge was taken by Hertz for the rental car. I am stunned. Not only is my account now in the negative, my blood pressure is now getting higher. I call the Royal Oak location and they inform me they have lost my insurance claim number; which I verbally gave to them two days prior; hence getting in a pickup truck. I inform them this is not my fault and I need the funds released immediately. They connect me to billing; a whole new fresh hell. The woman in billing informs me that since I had no claim number; Hertz charged me the normal amount for the vehicle. Whatever-just GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK. After two days of phone tag, they tell me to turn in my lovely pickup and rent another car and open a whole new rental so the old money can be released. Needless to say, I turned in my redneck mobile and went across the street to Enterprise where they were AMAZING. No issues, no hassles and no STEALING MONEY. Oh, and after I turned the car in and called a few days later when my money had not yet been returned, Hertz Royal Oak told me to turn the truck in and start a new rental....even though I already did days ago. Days have now passed and still no sign of my money. I WILL NEVER USE HERTZ EVER AGAIN. They cannot find their asses with both hands. This has been the worst experience of my life and such a headache. I reserved a vehicle many days in advance. Then, I even called early in the morning to make sure my vehicle would be ready in the afternoon. I was told it was ready to go. Later when I arrived, the vehicle was at a different location and I would have to pick it up there. What was the point of making a reservation 2 minutes from my home only to drive farther? And, why lie? Just say you do not have the car there instead of waiting to let me know much later when I get there. I should have just made arrangements with Enterprise across the street. I went through an outside rental car company to make a reservation on a car online. I reserve a vehicle at Hertz rental car in Royal Oak, Michigan. The rental car price was affordable, less than thirty dollars a day. Upon my arrival to pick up a rental car I reserved, the price had changed dramatically. First I was told the vehicle I reserve was not available, secondly I was encouraged to purchase a full tank of gas from the rental car agency, and I can bring the car back empty. The rental car customer representative stated I would save over $60.00 in cost of filling the fuel tank, I found out later that wasn't true. Thirdly I found out later by the manager that I was charge for four days instead of the two days I rented the vehicle. read more

We booked a car (Royal Oak location) in advance and our trip had to be canceled. We could not get our money back, so we were going to have to use a car through Hertz at a future date. When the time came to book another car, we needed an extra day (we were previously booked for 3 and now needed 4). The cost of the extra day was the same price as the 3 other days, so our cost was doubled. No one was able to explain this. The staff was pretty rude on the phone and unable to help. At pick up time, we walk in and no one is there. 5 minutes later someone walks out to help. There are only 2 cars in the size we requested. One has no gas and the other has to be cleaned out. And then... we must use a credit card, which we were never told. We were set to use our debit card, but they wouldn't except it and we were unable to rent a car there. We went across Woodward to Enterprise and left 10 minutes later with a rental car. The staff at enterprise was curtious and professional. All in all, rude, unprofessional staff at Hertz, that did not make us aware that a credit card was mandatory (had we known, we'd have had one). Use enterprise across the road. read more

I told him that I needed a ride to go back to my home, but he made me wait for more than 25 minutes without any explanation. This is really ridiculous!!! beware potential hertz renters that may be dropping off cars at hertz offices that are closed, but do have a key drop box: be very sure you take photos of the car (including the license plate), your contract paperwork, and the key/fob, prior to depositing into the box. then check your credit card statement! hertz at royal oak charged me an extra day (total $203.03 on 08.07.18) and denied my request to correct the bill, until i produced time stamped images showing i was on time. i had to call three times and go up the ranks from customer service to a supervisor on two of those calls. they flat out did not care and the second supervisor told me in no uncertain terms, "your claim was denied!" and refused to pass me along to her supervisor. without my pictures, i would have been screwed. in my opinion, this is apparently a common trap they use to garner extra income at your expense. i was finally issued a $94.30 refund on 08/29, 8 days after they told me i was getting one and 22 days after they first charged my credit card on 08/07. it's still $12.84 short of the $95.89 contracted price. that's the last dollar they will steal from me. i highly recommend you rent from anyone else. read more
