The rental was arranged through my insurance after a not-at-fault accident. Like many people in that situation, I arrived stressed, short on time, and just hoping the process would be simple. It wasn't. First, the vehicle I was given was in terrible condition (see pictures attached); visibly dirty inside and out. Not just "well used," but genuinely FILTHY. I had to spend $50 of my own money just to have it cleaned so I could drive it without embarrassment. That should never fall on a customer, regardless of the circumstances. But what left me truly frustrated was the way I was misinformed or worse, deliberately deceived about insurance. The employee handling my rental that day, Alvin, told me I was required to purchase Hertz's insurance coverage at an additional $30/day, even after I clearly explained I already had full coverage through my personal auto policy. No options were presented, no questions asked, just PRESSURE to accept and move on. By the end of my 6-day rental, I had been charged $180 in unnecessary insurance fees that I now know were completely avoidable. This wasn't a misunderstanding, it was a misleading and aggressive sales tactic, targeting someone already in a vulnerable situation. That's not just unprofessional, it's EXPLOITATIVE. To make matters worse, I just noticed an additional $373 charge applied to my card, for what, I honestly don't know. Mercury Insurance is covering the rental, so I'm baffled as to why I'm being charged anything beyond what I was pressured into. Yet again, no transparency, no explanation. When I called that location to cancel the added insurance, I received no empathy, no apology, just cold redirection. I was told to return to the branch to make changes. When I did, I was told to locate the vehicle myself in a chaotic parking structure, circling three times while Alvin and Giovanni sat idly by. No assistance. No acknowledgment. It was dismissive, degrading, and honestly, SHOCKING. This is not the level of service anyone expects, especially not from a brand like Hertz. Stephen or Steven is unwelcoming, not helpful and should not work in Customer service. He did not greet us when we walked in and we were to r only customers and after the car we reserved was unavailable (compact) he proceeds to offer a 7 seat SUV at an increased price. Not willing to help in any way and just says "I can't do anything about it." Total waste of time on a birthday that was supposed to be memorable. First time renting and this was the worst experience with any human being. First when getting the car, the guy at the desk seemed like he did not want to be there at all and did not give me any information unless I asked about it including how I even get the car. And then didn't even tell me about the security deposit so I had to go back the next day to ask about that. Our return time for the car was at 12pm and we returned the car and got to the office at EXACTLY 12pm. And the guy inside kept yelling at us saying they were closed and he clocked out already so he can't help us. He was yelling from inside to me outside while the doors to the office were locked. Then he proceeded to tell us that we would be charged for an extra day because the office closed???? I tried asking him why I would be charged an extra day and he just responded that they were closed so he won't answer my questions. I have become a regular customer here. I enjoy the easy process of going in and out. Always greeted great and I should know since I work in customer service myself. Alvin does an amazing job. Sometime people have to think cars can break down or get over billed. Only one bad incident happened but the staff here did there best and solved it. read more

It begins in an air conditioned San Pedro hertz office, but triple digit temperatures and heat exhaustion await. Yes, super corny but it's for dramatic effect. The car I booked was an economy for gas mileage purposes. But when I arrived to pick up the car, Hertz guy tells me there's only a Cadillac available for an extra fee. Acting like he's doing me a favor, he lowers the cost to $50 extra. Not having any other options I accept the Cadillac, not knowing the car could've been my aunt's tomb. My elderly family member and I embarked on a journey to Yellowstone where we had a wonderful time. But soon things take a turn for the worst on our way back home. The air conditioning in the Cadillac that I never wanted in the first place, that I paid extra for stops working, blowing hot air into the vehicle cabin. As we descend into the valley the temperature gauge hits triple digits, around 107°. My senior family member is sweating profusely, very tired, very hot, losing H2O thru sweat becoming dehydrated. I'm scrambling for a solution to this problem as it's Saturday afternoon and most of the Hertz locations close at noon. As I'm driving, I look up Hertz locations to find there's one open at the Fresno airport. I generally don't text and drive but the situation was dire. We were past Fresno so I turn around and head back to the direction I came from to the airport and much needed relief from the extreme heat. The Hertz agent verifies the AC is not working by walking to the car to make sure that I didn't forget to press the AC button and yes, she confirms the car's A/C is indeed blowing hot air and not working. I request to speak to a manager, but I'm told he's out back "washing cars" and "it will be a while until he's available." I wait a little while as my body core temperature goes back to normal. The manager never comes as he never intended to come out I'm sure. He does not have the decency to speak to a customer. At minimum I should've been offered an apology and the car comped. Nonetheless, the Caddy is switched out for a Sentra. Side note: the Sentra did not have a fob only a key. But at this point, I'll take a geo metro with spinners if it blew cold air. On our way back home the outside temperature in Bakersfield hit 112°. I'm not sure what would've happened had we not switched out the car, probably hunkered down in a motel that Hertz would not pay for then head out at 5am to avoid the heat. Fast-forward a couple days when I return the car. I asked to speak to a manager because the woman at Hertz Fresno airport told me I need to speak to a manager at the pickup location. But surprise surprise once again no manager is available and I never received a call or email even though the guy told me the manager would call/email me. The moral: Be wary, very wary of renting a car from hertz as your car may break down or not have ac. Clearly they don't service their vehicles. You may be stranded in 110 degree heat. Oh yea, the Caddy also had foul cigarette/BO combo odor. Avoid hertz if you're sensitive to smells and don't want to die of heat stroke while smelling BO and cigarettes... in a car silently without Bluetooth or CarPlay that you had to stick a key into the lock to open. The only good part about the SP location was this guy Luis I believe is his name. But he's gone and now it's all bad. read more

I feel bad going below three on anybody because the people working there are pretty nice. It seems like some unseen person changes reservations and tried to get you to accept a lower class vehicle. When I showed them my reservation, the issue was addressed - not perfectly but better. It does feel like Hertz does bait and switch in their algorithm. The main issue aside from algorithm misleading sales tactics stems from a small staff who has to do multiple jobs versus another nearby location that has more people doing a variety of jobs. So far, my actual experience is ok but my concern is that rental companies do a lot of bait and switch to catch a customer, then dump a car on you that you don't really want. It's tough to get a car at a similar rate last minute so it's a pretty good scam. read more

No one even bothered to call us ahead of time to let us know that there was no van available on our pick up day. We were there that morning for nothing. Was told that I can call an uber or lyft or taxi, but they don't do this service. Avoid this office!!! My wife and I had a reservation for a car the Saturday after Thanksgiving. We made the reservation thru the Hertz website. The office was supposed to open at 9 am (as advertised on the website as well as their door). We arrived at 9 am and we waited for nearly an hour until we found out the office was not going to open that day. There were about 30 other people who just disembarked off of a cruise ship from the Los Angeles Port who were stranded without cars for which they also had reservations. My wife and I eventually took a Lyft to LAX so we could rent a car from there. I emailed customer service politely asking how they can make this situation right and detailed my added expenses coupled with the fact that this ruined our plans for the day. I received an email from Hertz stating the following: "The information you have provided is very important to us since it tells us how our various locations are doing and where improvements are needed. Please be assured that your comments will be shared with the appropriate Hertz management." but Hertz did NOTHING for me at all including reimbursing me for my added expenses. They couldn't even give me a complimentary day for my next rental or possibly a discount on my next rental; they just did nothing. I don't know how Hertz can treat their customers like this! They could have at least tried to make this right but did nothing. I believe Dollar Rent A Car, Firefly Car Rental and Thrifty are also part of Hertz. Rude Rude Rude. I picked yup a car for 17. Dollars a day plus tax. Was quoted 21 dollars per day for a total of 42 dollars. The car showed 387 miles to empty when I picked it up, I told them to charge me ahead of time for the gas, usually 23 dollars as I rent 2/4 times a month from Hertz, the one on Cherry in Long Beach where they are professional and super nice. At the San Pedro location they added 60 dollars to my credit card for gas, I always return the car with more gas than I pick it up with. The man that helped me was rude and a little bit scary too in his voice. He am a good Hertz customer but will never go back to Sam Pedro on 6th street. No way. read more

My wife made a reservation for Friday and when she went the Hertz office on 6th Street in San Pedro she was told that they do not honor reservations made with a 24 hour window. She proceeded to ask the guy sitting behind the computer, "you guys don't appear to be busy now is there a car I could rent as a walk-in"? He told her we do have cars but we're gonna save them for people who could be coming off a cruise in the event that they might need a car.. In other words if you're from San Pedro or the local area they're gonna refuse you service for a maybe potential sale from somebody coming off a cruise. If that's not ass backwards then I don't know what to tell you, the way I see it a sale is a sale But the fact that they would not honor locals tells you all you need to know about them. They canceled our reservation without notice or confirmation on their end. 3 other ppl were across the street at enterprise with the same story as myself. I paid for a taxi to get there and had to call to get a refund because they still had me confirmed yet the guy there told us he canceled us because they didn't have enough cars?! They do not maintain the vehicles. Rented a toyota sienna to drive home from a cruise. Had to hold the sterring wheel 2" counter clockwise to hold the car straight. The vehicle was hydroplaning all the way home from I5 north. We had to drive 40mph. Even then, the thing would hydroplane. It felt like a death trap. Pulled to the side to see if we had a flat or something obvious but couldnt see anything, so we thought it was the wet roads that was the problem. Upon closer inspection when we got home, turns out the front passenger wheel was completly bald. Never had a problem with hertz or thier vehicles until now. Renting a car after a cruise is always nerve wracking, especially when the car rental place is the closest to the cruise port. You can expect it to be busy, but this place was way worse than I could have imagined. We were some of the first people off the cruise ship on a Thursday morning at 8:30am and we were still about 20th in line. We had made our reservations days in advance online. They were having computer issues and so we waited as the line grew to over 80 people in length. We waited nearly 2-hours for our car. They did upgrade us for the trouble, but it still didn't make up for all the time lost. We were so late getting our car that we had to push back our tour reservations and revise our entire plan for the day. I will not be back. I would rather pay more to not have to wait around. read more

I didn't experience anything negative, when using this Hertz for an SUV rental (5/31-6/3). Its a small office, right next to Hojas coffee shop. Guy who attending me was great; was in and out in maybe 15 minutes. I did have a reservation. They give you keys and you go up to the 6th floor - where the car rentals are located. Returning car was simple too! Went in office, gave them the keys, employee was friendly and gave me my final receipt. I would definitely use them again because they have very reasonable prices. OUTSTANDING customer service! This store, while a bit messy and unfinished (appeared to still be under construction), had FAR superior customer service, compared to Hertz central offices. Sad, plan at minimum of 2 hours to pick up your rental. My family and I have stood outside for over 2 hours and we at least have another hour before we will be helped. Poor car selection and awful customer service. I've rented from this location for business on three occasions; on the first they opened 15 minutes late, on the second they gave me a filthy car (inside and out) with less than a quarter tank of gas and on the third, they had NO cars available, even though I made a reservation two days in advance, and they asked me to wait for a car to be delivered from another location about 20 minutes away. So I went in to rent a car after an accident through my insurance and their only response was "we don't have any cars". They offered a waitlist but not anything else. I walked out. I called back two days later and was told they have no cars. I added myself to the waitlist. I was starting to think they were just ridiculous so I transferred my reservation to Enterprise (across the street -- they had a solution and a car for me). I called in to cancel my name on the waitlist at Hertz and the phone ran at least 20x before they answered and said "Hi this is hertz, can you please hold, thank you" and placed me on hold without giving me the chance to say no. Absolutely ZERO customer service training or caring. This location is garbage and I'm guessing the rest are too. Romeo was thoughtless in his comments to me & the quote of the hold put on my credit card had to speak w/his supervisor Bladimir. Left message to him never heard back then on the day I was returning the car I called him. He listened to my complaint & offered a comp day to the rental & apologized for Romeo's bad behavior; to bad Romeo never apologized. The car was so dirty the outside was covered in dead bugs looked like someone went through a swarm of locusts then when I got in the car there was trash in the front seat w/crumbs like someone left their lunch & it smelled of smoke. I appreciate the comped day to the rental it was necessary given all the mistakes. The rates are great but if I can avoid renting here again I will. read more

I'm surprised this location even has 2 stars! I simply cannot recommend this branch nor Hertz as a company overall. I am a President's Circle Gold member and I have not had one good, hassle-free experience renting from this location (I've mistakenly done so at least half a dozen times). I've had issues with everything from credit card error to long wait times, but the straw that broke the camel's back for me was the over 1.5 hour long false promise of pick-up from my house which cause me to be late for my meeting. I called several people, including corporate office, but no one claimed responsibility. I've since switched to Enterprise across the street and am much happier.
