This is for the location at 633 E. Cabrillo Hilton only. Absolutely the worst customer service imaginable. I was 1 hour late in picking up my vehicle and they gave it away. They never called me, I'm local I could have been at the counter in 10 minutes. Taylor had the audacity to blame me for being late. In addition he REFUSED to look at any other cars for me in the system and was very rude about the whole situation. His solution was for me to wait for someone to drop off a car. This location deserves the two star ratings that it receives for incredible lack of customer skills. I will be following this up with Hertz management. I proceeded to get on the phone with Hertz and they were able to find me a car at a different location and a very similar price. read more

Terrible. Arrived and no cars available. Said 20 minutes but just keep processing more and more people without cars. Ridiculous

If I could give them 0 stars I would. I booked a good deal through Kayak for 34$/day. When I received the car it was completely empty. I immediately called the front desk to let them know and that I went to fill it up myself. They told me that I can return the car on empty and they will adjust my contract when I return. The following day when I returned the car the computers just so happened to be down. They had me write down my name and number to make sure the final transaction was documented. I also confirmed that they received my call about my car being empty. Now I'm being billed 118 dollars for not returning the car full and they won't receive my calls. I've called 3 times. The first time that went through the person told me he can't help me and needs a managers approval and should call in Monday. I tried calling in on Monday and no one picked up the phone. I tried calling again and the person was busy and told me he would call me right back in 5 minutes and never received a call back. Do not use hertz in SB. read more

Rental staff was misleading, not paying attention or downright misinformed. Full explanation below. Booked a rental through Kayak at a good rate (~$35/day). We pre-paid through Kayak, and thought the cost was fixed. When we picked up the car, the customer service agent was clearly overworked, answering multiple phones (desk phone and cell phone - at the same time) WHILE also going through the paperwork with our rental. Not a good first impression. I was listed as the primary driver and over 25. Because I did not have a credit card at the time, my girlfriend was switched to be the primary driver, she was under 25, and her credit card was used. There was to be an under-25 fee for the rental (now in her name), but we were verbally assured (after asking multiple times) that the underage driver fee would be waived because she was a AAA member. Awesome! We also declined the gas fee. Until we were billed for the underage driver fee anyway. And the gas fee. It came out to $353 in addition to the $345 we already paid through Kayak ($698) - this additional fee made us pay more than double the cost of the original rental through Kayak, and was something we neither planned nor have the budget for. After calling Hertz this afternoon, we were told by the assistant manager for this location that there was nothing he could do. No refund, nothing. So I am escalating this further. I'm already past the point of declaring Hertz a lost cause and never renting with them again. I would also avoid this branch if you don't like being severely mislead. We're currently escalating this and I intend to alter this review if Hertz offers anything to help ameliorate this situation. read more

Amazing customer service. I have never been impressed with a Hertz location, EVER, and I have rented tons of cars, from Hertz as well as other agencies. The branch manager, Mr. Musa was most professional, friendly, courteous, and accommodating. I was picked up literally 10 minutes from the time I requested a car and given the perfect car for my needs. I highly recommend this location and will definitely use it again soon! Very agreeable and good assistance at the counter when renting the car, but kept trying to upsell me on every aspect of the rental from the car, gas, and insurance. I did take a small upgrade on the rental car size, but declined the additional coverage (as I always do when I rent a car). When I downloaded my receipt the day after returning the car there was a $60 charge for damage waiver. I immediately called Hertz and they were unwilling to take my word for it that I hadn't agreed to this surreptitious charge and would not agree to refund money that I feel was essentially taken out of my pocket. Clearly this doesn't matter to them but I will not be renting a car from them again. read more

Hertz Rental Car and the amazing staff at the Santa Barbara location are top notch!! I felt like I was very well taken care of and they're so streamlined. I'm a fanatic about being debt free and insist on paying for everything on my debit card by choice. I feel like this is a personal victory. While one of their competing car companies treated me like that was a personal defect about me. The Hertz staff treated me with respect and dignity. They require a deposit ahead of time and everything was still just as easy to arrange and made my vacation drive up the coast that much more relaxing! Wish I could post negative or zero stars! Booked a vehicle well ahead of time. Arrived on time only to be told they don't have a vehicle like the one I booked. I'm offered a different car which isn't even close to what I needed but I go look at it anyway. Open the doors, look around, it's filthy. Chips and nuts and food under the seat but that's not the worst part. There's live ammunition under the seat too. But don't worry they still charged my credit card. Avoid this place! read more

I've put on rental car at this location couple times for leisure and biz trip. Eventually wrote a review, overall is very good experience. This time, I reserved a Suburban for a ski trip for group of six. Hertz relocated the vehicle from the airport which in other way helped waive so called "airport fee" if rent directly from there. And this location is very close to my working place. Easy access! When i arrived at the counter two hours ahead of my reserved time, staff helped call the drive to make sure driver deliver the vehicle in a soon manner. read more

rented a car on 10/28. upon return was charged for 1 day extra! Gold members are charged for pickup HOURS earlier than actual pickup. The return "manager" said the pickup agent was new and printed tickets ahead of time for gold members - what a dis-service! Plan on talking to the return agent for a while to correct the bill and be sure to print it, since they have trouble finding your original quote in their own system. read more

I've been renting cars in Santa Barbara for months (waiting to buy a new car). This Hertz location is by far the worst possible choice. It is difficult to find in a large resort with poor signage. The rental location is in a dank windowless room with snarky staff. They are understaffed. They rented me a vehicle initially that had its check-engine light come on shortly after rental. Though that was their mistake, they lacked inventory to replace the vehicle and were unwilling to pick me up to replace it. Once I got a replacement vehicle, the maintenance light came on shortly after rental. I was told when calling that was a mistake, not clear how they know that. Finally, I received urgent phone calls about returning the vehicle after a one week rental. I've had none of these problems renting from Enterprise at Chapala and Cota. Also the Budget car rental in the Funk Zone is professionally staffed. Many good options and this is not one of them. read more

You can't even go into the parking lot because there is a warning They'll be $16 fee and no evidence to indicate that Hertz is located within and will validate. Inside, they have a tiny alcove in the lobby. And they are Understaffed. read more

My soon to be 21 year old son and a friend were planning a week long road trip for spring break. I wanted to rent him a car for the trip. I googled to find out if any companies rent to anyone under 25 and Hertz came up right away. I contacted them to inquire about the restrictions and was told that he would have to have his drivers licenses, social security card, credit or debit card, in his name, and would have to pay a $200 refundable security deposit. We have AAA and I was told that he would get a discount for that if he had a card in his name, which he does. I held the reservation and called back the next day with my son on the line to confirm the reservation. At that time I asked if they needed to run a credit check before we confirmed and was told that it would not be necessary. We asked a lot of questions, including specifically if it was ok to use a debit card, and were assured that it was not a problem. My son was given a phone number to call from the Santa Barbara train station which is where they deliver the cars. When they called this morning to pick up the car they were told that he would not be able to rent the car as he was using a debit card and not a credit card. They were unwilling to work with us in any way. When I called the Hertz customer service number, I explained my situation and asked to speak to a manager, I was then put on hold and the call eventually went into a loop and I was unable to speak to a manager. I then contacted the manager of the Santa Barbara office and was told that they would not honor the reservation. I will never use this company again!!! read more

My family and I are going to a trip out of town so we decided to rent a bigger, more comfortable car from Hertz. WORST CHOICE EVER. I called ahead and made a reservation. The lady I talked to told me they would have it ready for me at 3:30 and gave me the set price of 186.99. Well, when I go to pick up the car, the man behind the counter asks me my name and takes my credit card information, he then tells me the TOTAL WILL BE 800 dollars. I couldn't believe they were charging me that for a couple of days and then told him that the woman I had talked to told me the price would be 186. Instead of giving me the price it was supposed to be, he asks me the name of the woman and simply says she was wrong. What? Not coming back here. Do yourself a favor and go to any other car rental place. read more

This place is an absolute crap show. I feel bad for the employees working here because I see them doing a lot and there is no way it could be there fault with what is going on here. I am aware they clean the cars as well as pick up customers and take the reservations all at one time leaving them too much work on their plate. I also feel bad for any customers that use hertz car rentals in Santa Barbara because they will more than likely run into problems here. I have been coming to them for years only because my job has a deal with them and I need them for business rentals. For the 2 years I have been coming to this hertz it has absolutely not gotten better. Sometimes you will book a car and your car would not be there and they let you know even though the reservation desk guaranteed you a car, they are ultimately in OKC and don't know what cars are available. Doesn't make any sense whatsoever. There is also almost always a wait because there is only one person usually working the location and they are almost never at the office until you call them. Not only that you will finally get to the rental when they are back and their computers are very slow and don't seem to work well is what the employees tell you. Then once the computer finally starts working their printers seem to stop working. Once you finally get the contract you are pointed into the direction of a giant parking lot full of cars of people staying at the hotel. So it is very hard to find the cars. Don't see how they are still in business or their management doesn't get them working technology. Isn't this supposed to be a big time corporate company? They could do better than this. Last their manager Vanessa does not seem like she knows what she is doing herself and it does not seem like she is getting any better at her job for I have ran into and complained about these problems so much and nothing is fixed as well as she seems very unprofessional and unorganized. Very disappointing! I used to rent from hertz all the time. I always used the same credit or debit card and I had never any problems until last Friday , September 28th. My appointment was at 4pm that day. I got very busy at work so I called to ask if my boyfriend could pick up the car. He did that for me before using his debit card as deposit. The person says it's all good and they will be waiting for him at that time. He goes there few minutes before 4 so everything is on schedule, There is a huge line in front of him so he calls me he won't be able to check out for at least another 40min... I was getting a little bit nervous since it was important for us to leave on time, no one told me that it may be an issue. At that point im still okay. after 40 minutes my bf is calling me that they won't rent him a car b/c it is a debit card instead of credit card??. On july 7th he used exactly the same debit card in the same location and there were no problems. I called the Representative again, trying to get more info. he is trying to scam me and tell me stories that are not true pretending to be the manager- which for fact i know it wasn't. since the manager is always extremely helpful. Anyhow I wasted my time, didn't get the car and missed very important appointment in LA. I called enterprise after that. Too bad it was too late and they were closing, but they did not see why debit card is not good enough as long as you pay $200 deposit. I'm very, very disappointed. I've been a customer here for many years and generally had good experiences. Today, however, I showed up at 11 for a 10 am economy car reservation and the clerk told me they didn't have an economy car but could give me the next size up for more $. I asked how long they hold reservations for, and he said their policy is to hold reservations for 2 hours. I asked why I should be upsold on a higher priced rental when they didn't hold my reservation. The clerk insisted that they were honoring my reservation and could either have an economy car there in 30 minutes or I could pay more for the next size up. I don't know what their definition is of 'honoring' a reservation, but when you show up and the car you reserved isn't there, in my book that's not it. I would probably have just agreed to wait (with mild annoyance) except that the clerk was totally unapologetic and when I called him out on my disappointment, he just brushed me off and insisted that he had to get back to someone on the phone he had on hold. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER. Very disappointed. Wont be going back. read more
