I rented a Chevy bolt ev. For by uber driving. The store staff does not help with the car, they take pictures and hand you the key. The car has no charging plug and they do not provide one. But there unfriendly staff acts bothered and offers no customer service. I asked for info on the car and they were to busy to help. I've been a Hertz member for a long time and have generally been very pleased but this rental experience was absolutely the worst I've had. I'm a Gold Elite member and every other airport I fly into, I simply go to the vehicle in the space indicated in the email I receive. I did the same on this trip into Tucson. I got to the car but there were no keys, so I went all the way back to the desk, stood in line and finally got my keys. Defeats the purpose of being a Gold Member. I then took my luggage out to the garage and got to the vehicle and did my customary walk-around. The window had a chip (that's a nightmare when Hertz tries to bill you for it - ask me how I know) and damage to the passenger door that I just didn't want to pay to drive (picture attached) because it looked like a second tier rental. I went back to the desk with my luggage and was given another vehicle. By this time I was running late and needed to get going. The vehicle was filthy inside and out. I've attached pictures of the outside. There were also large scratches down the passenger side. If the vehicles weren't inside a parking garage there may be an explanation but - nope. Once I started driving I saw that something had been splashed all over the dashboard and steering wheel. Totally unacceptable. I had to have the car washed the next day. Try as I might, I could never get a human being to talk to. Everything is done online or via voice messaging . Someone finally texted me and 'annotated' the damage to the passenger side and said I'd have to contact roadside assistance if I wanted a new car - which entailed waiting around for hours - I ultimately opted to just wash it an press on. I competed the survey they sent and received a 'canned' email 'we're sorry we didn't meet your expectations . . . '. I sent an email back saying that the canned email was actually more offensive than no response - they never responded. Based on this experience, I will be cancelling my account after my trip next week and will not use Hertz in the future. Their prices are always a bit high, but in the past it's been because of vehicle quality and customer care. When I asked the attendant at the airport why the damage to the first vehicle wasn't fixed, he said 'Hertz doesn't fix them - they just put them back in service'. I guess that says it all! read more

I arrived at the counter after a 12 hour journey and they told me "sorry, we have no cars left". Stuff like this I'm sure can happen but what about customer service, how about giving me a courtesy call since I made the reservation months ago. It would have allowed me to possibly make another plan or request a ride share. The two at the desk, while they did say sorry they kind of shrugged and said try again tomorrow. The car was filthy, like someone walked on the seats with sandy shoes on and a film like apolstery cleaner on the inside of windows we couldn't get off. Wasn't even close to having a full tank of gas. Driving from Tucson and in the middle of White Sands New Mexico get an alarm that we should not stop suddenly as coolant is low. Luckily, someone stopped and helped us to get it above the minimum line, which it was way below!! Get back to Tucson and the clerk tells me "you turned it in so everything seems fine. This was the first time I had to wait at an airport to pick up my car because they didn't have my Gold Service account ready with my keys. The agent stated my credit card declined but that's not correct because I would've received a text from my AMEX platinum card. I asked to speak to the manager, not there. The day manager claimed that the location manager did not poses an email adresse or a phone number; so I could not follow up. Frustrating and expensive experience here. You reserve a specific rental such as an SUV, and get there and they sell you an entirely different one at the day's rate. My membership status supposedly qualifies me for a "guaranteed upgrade" and choice of any car in the aisle, yet my choices the day we picked up were a "free" downgrade to a small car, or pay double for a different vehicle. In a new city with no transportation, my option was to either cancel my rental (unsure of the refund policy) and try a different company, or just go with the mandatory upgrade fee which was an additional $100 a day. The upgrade cost, in total, was 112% more than I originally prepaid for my entire rental. The clerk at the desk told us that no SUVs were available, yet walking to our rental, we passed two SUVs. So we wondered if they lied to get us to pay an upgrade fee, or they were simply clueless as to their inventory. Very frustrating either way. This location has a relatively small selection of cars. It looked like they occupy about 2 rows in the garage which was approximately 60 cars, guesstimating. Beware of the limited availability on busy times of year. The good news is this airport has 5 major rental companies, so they are bound to have something available. This location also doesn't seem to offer President's Circle pickups where you go straight to your car. It's a very old school location where you wait in line and they hand you the key, TELLING you which car you will get, rather than asking the customer or allowing the customer to pick it themselves. This defeats the entire purpose of reserving and paying in advance. If reserving a rental online, realize it's not actually a reservation of any kind whatsoever - but with this location, merely a prepayment. This experience which cost us an insane amount of money. Like, as in, we could probably have book over 50 Uber trips for the insane cost we paid to rent a car for 1.5 days. Next time will go with Enterprise. read more

I did not enjoy my experience with this location. Maybe it was a bad day (I mean who wants to work on a Saturday), but rep that assisted with my reservation had an attitude and spoke in a condescending manner. That said, I grabbed the car they gave so I can go on with my day. The moment I opened the car, it smelled like marijuana. Since I was taking it on a long drive to SoCal, I didn't want to sit with that scent. I went back to the same rep and asked if I could be placed in a different car. They went to go check the car, came back, and tried convincing me that it did not smell like weed and that it was the smell of the air freshener. They said the only way I could get a different car was to upgrade and they wouldn't waive price. I couldn't stand the stench in the other car and I was already late for a different obligation so I took the upgrade. The "upgrade" was a Nissan Rogue. The vehicle smelled like mold, the Apple Car Play kept disconnecting (even though I tried multiple cords), the speakers were slightly off-sync making the music unpleasant to listen to, and one of the headlights were out. I brought it back the next day before my drive to SoCal. I asked the attendant for an exchange and started the sentence with it smelling like mold. They cut me off and said that they won't exchange the vehicle if it smells moldy. It wasn't until I finished my sentence saying that the headlight was out that they then agreed to accept the exchange. I went early so I wouldn't run into the same rep that provided poor service the previous day. Fortunately I was put in a Corolla which didn't have any problems. I'm in Tucson for a work conference and booked ahead of time online. When I arrived to the rental counter, I was the first in line, greeted immediately and made to feel like a valued customer. The check out process was easy and I provided my driver's license and choose the full replacement coverage insurance. I was given my booklet and the key, and could walk out and pick up my car. It was so easy to find in the well-marked lot! The car was new and only had 3k miles! It was nice and clean and super comfy. Like some of the other recent reviewers, I had an absolutely horrid experience with the Hertz manager at the Tucson airport. I showed up with an email from Hertz confirming that I had reserved an AWD SUV. The agent said their system showed otherwise and so she fetched her manager, a very unprofessional person with no customer relations skills, who proceeded to accuse me of fraud and claimed that I needed to pay a double upgrade fee to get the vehicle shown on my Hertz email. Seriously? She pointed at some hidden video cameras 5 or 6 times to try to intimidate me, or whatever. Then she said I'd have to pay a cancellation fee of $200 if I walked to another rental counter. I don't think this is true, because it wasn't a prepaid, but I wasn't sure. So I gave in to her extortion, including her refusal to accept my Gold member 15% off e-coupon, but the worst was still yet to come. My travel plans had changed, and I wanted to drop the car in Salt Lake City, rather than in Tucson and fly to SLC. What a surprise to find that rather than paying a flat drop-off fee of $50-100 as in the past, they wanted an additional daily charge of about $60 per day. For a car that would cost under $30 per day if returned to Tucson. In fact when I extended the rental by a couple days, I was charged $120 per day. I ended up paying about $800 more for my 11-day rental than if I had received the car I had originally reserved and if I had returned it to Tucson. Bait and switch, plus highway robbery. Absolutely awful. I rented a car for 6 days and it smelled like an absolute ashtray. I called to return it but could not get through to an actual person (the automated line's option to speak to a local representative cycles back to previous menu option and never to an actual person). After an hour of trying to contact the local hertz office at the airport I decided to just return the smelly car back 3 days early. The seemingly helpful person at the return desk said that I would be pro rated for only the days I had the car. Perfect until the receipt showed up in my inbox showing that I was charged the full price and stating that the prorated cost for fewer days would be higher than the original charge. I got a rental through Hertz a week ago and it was one of the worst rental experiences I've had. I asked the agent for a military discount and he came back and said this is what I could do. I should have done my due diligence and checked, but he didn't give a very normal, common discount. If i could give negative 5 stars, I would. I want to start by saying I am a President's circle member with over 75 rental days and over 20 rentals a year. I recently came across this absolutely horrific branch this past week during my business trip to Tucson (I had previously been with National). I arrived to find they had a Chevy bolt- EV reserved for me. I kindly asked "MARGO" the older lady at the desk what the range is-- her response - looked dismissively at me- "i don't know LOOK IT UP". Unreal response. I asked what else was available - she said nothing else is available. She offered an upgrade which i refused- however CHARGED me an extra $100/day for said upgrade. After telling this lady that I had refused the upgrade offer and took delivery of the assigned vehicle she condescendingly barked back- "sir it is not on your bill" it is in the computer. I had to get to work so I didn't persist. I get to work and the latch for the trunk kept on popping open. Realizing this was an unsafe situation I went back to the airport for an exchange. Elissa (new front desk rep) refused to exchange it saying it was "safe". Eventually after speaking with this extremely rude, dismissive and unprofessional agent she contacted her manager, Lashawna (sp?). I didn't think one could get more unhelpful and impudent than Elissa- well Lashawna took the cake. She said, there was nothing further that can be done. She can't offer another type of vehicle without paying for an upgrade. I calmly explained that I was already charged for an upgrade and didn't GET an upgrade and need this to be taken off my bill. This lady stated that the extra $300 couldn't be taken off as I had ordered an upgrade upon checkout (which i clearly hadn't as I took receipt of the Chevy Bolt). I also reminded her that "president's circle" members are often offered upgrades for being loyal members based on availability free of charge. She tells me this is not their policy. All that she could do was only charge me $50 extra vs. $75 extra per day. I refused this "generous offer" and just said I will take whatever will be safe and equivalent to my reserved vehicle. After 10 minutes of speaking with Elissa privately in back she offered me a downgrade- stock Jetta ( old with no auto anything and glass damage to the windshield). Before pulling away, I notified the Hertz staff of this and was told the "glass splinter" appeared to have been sealed so they were aware of the damage. I trusted this branch as far as I could throw them so I took a photo of the said damage. I returned after my 3 day rental to an email (incident report) accusing me of damaging their Jetta's windshield along with an updated bill for over $700 for a 3 day rental!! I had booked the vehicle and estimated total was roughly $200. So not only had they charged for the upgrade(not received), they increased the daily total (I was quoted $50- they charged over $80), and they tried holding me responsible for the damaged windshield. Complete horror show. As a brief post-script, I did go to Tucson the following week for business again and rented with Sixt. The very nice rep not only upgraded my rental for free ( I status matched to platinum on Sixt as I wasn't planning on ever returning to this Hertz), she also commented that MANY people had complained about this particular Hertz branch. After this experience I did reach out to Hertz customer service who apologized for the branch and offered a refund for the $400 I was overcharged for the rental. I really feel that all customers need to be warned about this branch and the customer service "offered". I also plan on escalating this complaint to Hertz corporate so that they are aware. So I wish my experience was isolated, but based on the article written in The Atlantic, and comparing notes with others, not so much. We rented a car in Tucson, which I noticed was an electric vehicle. Now I love EVs, but I was going to visit my parents, who live in the hinterlands, so I called Hertz customer service and was told my car would be switched to a gas powered vehicle. Guess what? It wasn't. Under the adage you get more flies with honey, I tried being reaally nice to the person at the Hertz desk, explained my situation, and hoped she'd switch my car. Nope! The person at the front desk told me that's all they had left (unlikely), and she wasn't particularly nice about it. So it was blazing hot, which drained the EV battery quickly. We had to find a charging station (20 minutes from where I was staying), drive two cars there (thank goodness I had access to one), and leave it there for 4 hours to charge, aaannd drive back (another 20 minutes). Hertz's response when I complained? Talk to the hand. Worst rental and some of the worst customer service I've ever had... ever. Now, again, you'd think this was a one off experience. But nooo... it's apparently so common someone wrote and article about it for The Atlantic Magazine, which makes our experience all the more frustrating. read more

Recently Hertz charged me about $200 for tolls in NY and NJ. I used my own EZ Pass and ensured their toll device was closed. So, #1 their device still registered tolls even tho it should not have. #2 I sent them proof that I paid those tolls with my EZ-Pass (they didn't care). #3 The tolls in question added up to around $30, but I was charged almost $200!!! Stay away from Hertz - companies like Alamo are far better. The car fell from a Lemon tree and landed in my driveway. I booked it through Dollar and ended up with Hertz. The only plus... Staff at the TUS airport.. Extremely friendly. Horrible customer service at the Hertz Rental Counter and entire rental process. Reserved a small SUV in advance. Came to pick up the car and was told ALL cars were rented, only option was an electric car, specifically a TESLA. I insisted that I did NOT want an electric car, that I am not on vacation to look for charging stations to charge the Tesla. The one white lady at Hertz said, sorry, that's all we have. She handed over a hard plastic case to me and said your car is outside in J9 stall. That was it, no instructions at all. Finally found a Kiosk person to help. Once I figured out how to drive this high tech car it was fine, but for someone who is way older, this could be an issue. Not saying older people don't know much, just saying it can be complicated. After I returned the Tesla I contacted Hertz asking for a FULL refund. Good luck, that is not happening. They charged me $393 for 3 days, when my original request for an SUV would have been $157 for 3 days. At this time, I am calling Hertz every single day because 10 days later they still have not closed out my account. Such a disappointment for a first time car rental at Hertz. I'm going with Enterprise next time. I will give this rating a big fat 0. There are many negative posts about Hertz and now I understand why. Get your act together HERTZ. read more

Although I'm a 5 Star loyalty member, I STILL should have checked Yelp! before reserving a car from this location for our recent trip to Tucson. Got to the counter and they had my reservation but they have no 5 Star aisle at Tucson International (TUS). The deal is, 5 Star members are supposed to be able to choose their own cars if they book at least an intermediate class. But not here. They assigned me a Buick Encore, a small SUV. OK, fine, except that it didn't have a GPS or Apple Car Play. Instead, I had to CALL OnStar (via the car's system), wait for a rep to come on the line, tell her the address I wanted to go to, and then they send directions to the car's display. No additional charge, but a pain in the ass. Also, the luggage space was so small, our one suitcase and my computer bag barely fit. Had I known, I'd have booked an economy class and saved some money. As it was, I paid $235 to drive 84 miles. That's nearly $3 a mile, more than a taxi (not Lyft or Uber) would have cost. Sheesh. If it wasn't for the great treatment I generally receive at other Hertz locations, I'd be swearing off of Hertz. For now, though, I'm only swearing off Hertz TUS location. I had scheduled a rental of a Jeep Grand Cherokee (or similar) for a week here in Tucson. When I arrived at the airport, the vehicle they had given me was a Chevy Equinox. I told the person at the counter that these vehicles were not similar, but she told me that they were in the same class. Ok. Let's see. The Chevy Equinox is most definitely a compact or small SUV, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee is a midsize SUV. The Jeep has a 6 cylinder engine, and the Equinox has a 4 cylinder engine. The Jeep has all wheel drive, and this particular Equinox has only 2 wheel drive. The Equinox is much smaller in its dimensions (a simple google search will prove this) and is much smaller inside. Our luggage did not fit without folding the second row seats down. They had several Infiniti QX60s on the lot, which are more similar to a Jeep Grand Cherokee, but I was told I would have to pay a premium if they gave me one of these. Funny, I didn't get to pay less for a smaller SUV. I tried calling the corporate number to speak with a representative, but could not reach an actual person. As a "Gold Member" (which apparently means nothing), I'm very disappointed in this poor level of customer service, and will no longer be using Hertz for my rental car needs. I was supposed to pick up the car at 12.45 pm on 09/15/2021and I was at the counter at 12.36 but the counter person said to pick up at 1.00 pm. He advised that he could give me the vehicle but I had to pay another $55.00, waited till 1.00 pm . Took me another 15 minutes to look for the car and locate. Started the car and started to move but noticed tire pressure light come up. I thought it would go away but it did not . I came back to drop off the car which took me 4 minutes. The receiving lady had no badge , had very little English. I explained to her and she directed me to the main office for replacement. They did but after 2 week , they billed me for $882.62 for tires . They endorsed refused to sign.Driving for 4 minutes around the rental car - the guys endorsed 69 miles . This was a complete falsification of documents, mileage and charge . Even one of their attendants advised me rent from Enterprise. I find Hertz at Tucson, Arizona unreliable, undependable, unresponsible , unethical, unprofessional and disgusting. I will never recommend anyone to do any business with this company. read more

We booked a 4 door Sudan on Expedia. The clerk rang us up for an SUV upgrade without our consent. He didn't tell us how much more it was costing, and it was a LOT more: $75 per day for a 5 day rental! He was going charge us without informing us of this additional expense! OK, so I booked this car with points - it cost me nothing (cash-wise), but the agents were not pushy or disinterested at all. They were friendly and helpful and did not admonish me for not buying any of the add-ons (insurance, GPS device, etc). Everything was smooth and pleasant. The car itself was a GM (Chevy something). Not a brand I would normally desire. But they have come a long way since the famous "K" cars of old. A fairly decent vehicle - very clean with good acceleration and great mileage! Actually a pleasure to drive. Finding the Hertz desk was easy in the little Tucson airport, which is one of my favorites. A short walk to the counter and only one guy ahead of me. Easy Peasy! This is about as good as it gets! (note - some folks seem to think that the agents are out to get them, or that Hertz is intent on screwing them over. I actually rented from Dollar, although Dollar, Thrifty and Hertz are all the same corporation, here the Hertz desk is run quite a bit better. Dollar and Thrifty are not staffed much of the time so if you come in on a late flight they take off and the Hertz desk has to try to figure out who you are. But they do that rather well, politely, quickly and there's a manager on. By contrast Avis right next (I stood in the wrong line for 20 minutes) has an overworked tired lower level worker who is required to deliver a long winded and annoying scripted interaction and has no discretion to make even the slightest customer service exception. The Hertz manager read me like an airport paperback and without any elaboration from me compensated for the long day of abuse I got from American Airlines, the frustration of standing in two wrong rental car lines after an inexplicable delay with checked luggage (I paid for that suffering) and accelerated me into my rental car with the barest minimum of small talk. Couldn't ask for more from this car rental facility. They are small but mighty. Super friendly staff and very efficient. They had me in and with a car in no time. Offered me the local map, and when i asked, they even gave me a few things to do in the area that were not yet closed (it's a small town that closes early). Long wait times, and cars that are not what was reserved or promised. My car was filthy, the only reason I took it out of the lot , was that I couldn't afford another 1.5 hour wait to change it and didn't know if they had any other cars to give me. At Tucson International Airport use another company if you want a good experience. The rental car received at a very high cost, had mechanical problems, after 2 hours on the phone, I STILL WAS NO CL0SER TO A RESOLUTION. I drove back to where I was staying in an unsafe vehicle rather than killing my cell phone battery. Being a Gold Rewards , Gold Circle member is meaningless at this location. I have to give them 5 stars! My first time at Hertz. We usually use another company, but Hertz had a better price for our package deal, so we went with it with fingers crossed. The whole process was so smooth. Checked it at the airport upon landing and we were driving out in about 10 minutes. I noticed our car was a bit on the smaller size and even though it was kind of what we ordered, the next day we were able to trade it in for a different model with a little more room. From the time we drove up and drove back out was less than 10 minutes! The very next day our tire had a nail in it and we were able to drive it back and in less than 10 minutes again, we were on the road with an upgraded vehicle. Each agent was very nice and the return process was super easy. The rental car desk is very close to the arrivals/departures at the airport. read more
