We had like a small apartment. Room 26 and it was on the third floor. It was the winter. We stayed overnight because we had late night reservations and didn't feel like driving back home. The place was clean. The staff was very welcoming. We had street parking or they have a small lot. We had control of our own heat. It was a nice quiet and restful stay. The bathroom comes with all the amenities. Including make up remover and the make up towel. In the morning there was a small continental breakfast. It's complimentary, but it wasn't my favorite. Hw review Room 3 at the Hewitt Wellington was a huge disappointment to us. We are in town for a wedding and our family booked three rooms for multiple nights. I had no idea when I booked that the quality level of the rooms varied so drastically. Our room, #3, is small, cramped and filthy. Plus, it cost at leat $30 more per night than the other rooms I booked for my family members. When I complained to the manager, she actually told me that people prefer this type of room, with its mismatched furnishings, cheap decor, stained rug and duvet. She then told me I was free to leave and find a better hotel. I have never had a worse experience from the management of a hotel. I am hoping that if you plan on staying, be sure you inspect the rooms because the differences are enormous...this room is worse than anything I have stayed in, and had I an alternative, I would have left and demanded a refund. The most important thing to know about this hotel is that it is not handicap accessible at all. There are steps up to the main house. The interior have narrower doorways than more modern construction therefore wheelchairs would not go through doors very easily unless they are the double French doors. The staff are very nice and accommodating. The room I booked happened to be on the third floor and as a person with a disability that would've been impossible for me to do. But I was given the room on the first floor which helped tremendously. I appreciated the change. We went during the off-season so parking was plentiful. They also seem to be a dog sort of floating around here and there which I didn't appreciate because I'm allergic to dogs. Even though the dog was gorgeous. The suite that we were given on the first floor was very spacious. The bed was magnificent. The pillows far too big and fluffy. I agree with other reviewer's that at first sight, all seems well. . But then you go a little deeper and you'll see the spots and stains on the rug, and the furniture, the chips of wood on the desk, the dirty bathtub which is unacceptable, rust around the fixtures in the bathroom as well. Be Prepared To Be Escorted Out By The POLICE if You Complain About Room Cleanliness and Service! If you stay at The Hewitt Wellington and find the service or your room unsatisfactory, and complain to the manager Matt, you will have to answer to the POLICE! I had booked room 18 a few months ago for a 3-day weekend stay in July. Knowing that most Spring Lake hotels are outdated I called the front desk ahead of our stay, and asked if room 18 had been remodeled. I was assured that it was. Upon checking in I found our room not to have been remodeled nor to be sanitary. There were greasy and questionable stains on the sofa, curtains and bed. After my initial complaint about multiple issues with the room, the on-duty front desk assistant manager Bridget did not apologize for this inconvenience however, offered a discount upon checking out. Upon checkout I was instructed to speak with Matt, the manager. I began in a very friendly tone telling Matt the issues with the room: -Questionable stains -Nobody cleaned our room the entire stay -The mattress on the sofa had springs sticking out and was extremely uncomfortable. I was in significant pain after sleeping on it -Miscommunication about the room being remodeled Matt proceeded to cut me off. The on-duty manager did not allow or want to hear from a guest, instead he offered to print out the definition of the word remodeled. I declined. He then said "the customer is not always right" and proceeded to verbally abuse me. He said he wasn't going to offer proper discounts and that if I did not like the hotel I should leave at once. On my calm remark that I found it unbelievable that a manager shall allow himself to talk to a customer in such a rude way, Matt called the police to escort me from the hotel. Allow me to repeat this, the on duty manager in the hospitality industry decided to call the police on a guest speaking and voicing genuine concerns. I am bewildered at this hotel's complete lack of service, mistreatment and abhorrent behavior by management. read more

I would give the hotel 3 stars for its character and 1 star for misinformation. It's old and could use some renovation and a cable remote that's not crusted with filth and non-operational. The older guy at the reception gave some misinformation - when I was checking in, he told me I could park in the diagonal spots in front or if full, on Monmouth Street, or behind the hotel. When I was about to check out, I discovered (by the ticket on my windshield!) about illegal overnight street parking that costed me $54 & 3% processing fee. He says he told me, but he clearly did not so do not park on the street overnight no matter what they tell you even though there's insufficient parking there for the number of rooms. Pick a place with adequate legal parking and more well-appointed rooms. This one is disappointing! read more

Great location but rooms need a lot of attention. The Bathroom had significant shower mold. The comforter was ripped at the bottom with the cotton coming out. This is unacceptable at over $300.00 per night. The staff was friendly. We stayed in room number 14 which had a balcony overlooking the lake. The balcony wast the best part of the room. We had peekaboo views of the ocean In between the houses. The sunrise is also great from the balcony. The carpets were clean and seemed relatively new. The hotel is a short .5 mile walk to shops on 3rd street. If you want a short 2 block walk to the beach and a great balcony you may want to consider this hotel. Just remember the rooms are not well maintained and the bathroom may have mold in the shower. This oversight makes me think about what other steps they skipped when turning over rooms. You may be sacrificing cleanliness for convenience when you stay here. This hotel could be nice if they thoroughly cleaned the bathrooms and paid attention to the little details. The hotel was a lot better run 5 years ago. I understand it's tough during COVID19 but the lack of presence of staff and resources with no cleaning service in our room during the stay and having to call to get towels cause of their poor communication , their lack of willingness to provide suggestions or resources was a turn off. The pool makes it worth it but this year it sparkles and no one is allowed to be at it or in it so truthfully - I definitely do not think I'd return since they are pricy and clearly were not focused on customer service this year. read more

Before I begin - please know that I found the staff to be the best part of this stay. They were friendly and helpful. The rest of this review is specific to the hotel itself. The location of the hotel is great - not too close yet not too far to the beach. I stayed with my 12 year old so the walk to the beach was fine but with little kids I would say that you should drive. At first glance the room was great. View of the pool, large queen sized bed and two chairs. There were 2 closets and a large bathroom. Additionally there was a small microwave and a small refrigerator next two the large vanity. There was a wall mounted (not in window) air conditioner that looked almost new - which was great. Overall it was charming.....until I looked closer. 1. The ceiling fan in the room was FILTHY - I mean gross, no one has taken a duster to this fan in years, filthy. It also made the most annoying noise - so we did not use it. 2. The bathroom door would NOT open from the inside. Thank goodness I had my daughter with me as I would have been stuck in the room with no way to get out!!! It could only be opened from the outside. 3. Speaking of the bathroom - which looked to be newly made over - the tub was GROSS. I get that the non slip bottoms of tubs are hard to clean but some bleach, a magic sponge and some elbow grease goes a long way. We wore our flip flops in the shower. 4. There were supposed to be pull down shades in the room. One window had the shade the other looked like the shade fell. It was rolled up and in the corner of the room - remember we had a pool side room on the second floor - thus we had to close the curtains to get dressed and they were not in working shape either. We just pulled them as close as we could and then held them in place with the chairs in the room. 5. I did not attempt to open the microwave (honestly I was scared) and the fridge was fine but there was a 20 ft extension cord with a surge protector just curled up under the small table that held these items. Very shoddy looking. 6. The bedding seemed clean but there were stains on the bed skirt and I don't even want to think about what could be in the carpet. Some nice points: 1. The pool was nice - small but nice. This usually is not an issue as we are at the beach. 2. The breakfast was good - continental but they did have hot egg sandwiches and you do have an option to "order in" from a local restaurant (On Third) the night before. They then deliver to you directly. The delivered breakfast is NOT FREE - you would need to pay separately where as the continental is included in your stay. 3. The hotel provides beach towels for both the pool and the beach so you don't have to bring your own 4. Beach passes are included in your stay as well. Net net I am not sure that I would give this place another stay. I have been going to Spring Lake all my life and I am well aware of the prices (This room cost me $355). For that price I would have thought that the room would be cleaner / more put together. They were fully booked so perhaps I just got a bum room I did choose this hotel because I only needed a 1 night stay and they were the only place that would accommodate that. (During the season hotels in Spring Lake normally require a 2 night minimum). read more

I recently stayed at the the Hewitt Wellington for the first time and really enjoyed my stay. The location of the hotel is great - there is ample free parking, walking distance from the beach, and has a great front view of a lake. The staff was very friendly and helpful in offering their recommendations on local attractions/services. As a coffee enthusiast, I really enjoyed the 24/7 complimentary coffee! Unlike some places that have pre-brewed (stale) coffee sitting out, the Wellington has a machine that offers both caffeinated and decaffeinated Starbucks coffee that grinds and brews the coffee on the spot. In addition, they also provide my personal favorite Sugar in the Raw and flavored coffee creamer. I will definitely be staying at the Hewitt Wellington again in the future and highly recommend it. read more

It was devastating to leave this great place. We were in town for a race, and the HW was the closest decent looking place with rooms available - but it far, far exceeded our expectations. It was the off season, so the community was very quiet but absolutely stunning. Our suite was on the ground floor and was so comfortable I slept better than I do at home. We even had our own private access to the porch! The beach is a short walk away, and while it wasn't open, the pool area looks fantastic as well. All around a great experience - we are inspired by this place, the town, and the service to return for a regular vacation in the summer with a little less running involved . read more

The good: gorgeous neighborhood, the architecture has historical features, it is close to the beach, the room was larger than it appeared in pictures, the owner was very friendly, and it had a bed n' breakfast feel to it but minus the price and an amazing breakfast. The bad: the t.v. had a static sound no matter what and we had to ask for towels as there were none when we got there. Both of which aren't deal breakers. The ugly: on the last day, the sheet cover came off the mattress enough for me to see stains on the mattress. In reality, I'm sure no hotel's mattresses are 100% perfect but I was almost horrified at what I saw...basically I really hope that what I saw was just a stain from spilled RED WINE...if you catch my drift. So up until I saw the mattress, I was certain I'd stay there again but now I doubt I ever will. If for some reason I do, then it won't be in room #8. read more

Amazing customer service! I booked 3 weeks out via hotelstonight.com. I got my confirmation and was very excited. Most places in the area require a 2 night minimum during the summer, but I was able to get a single night from Hotels Tonight. When we got to the hotel, they didn't have our reservation and were completely sold out. However, the manager Matthew was incredible in how he handled it. He found us a room at another hotel, down the street and actually closer to the beach. Pulled out his credit card and paid for that room on the spot - which was $150 more than what we had paid. The other hotel was lovely as well, but we will hopefully be back to sit on the porch at the Hewitt Wellington in the future. Another place might have told us to "take it up with hotels tonight" and we'd have had to figure it out on our own. But Mathew's quick attention and genuine kindness about the situation made it all alright. read more

Planned last minute, we were delighted to find this spot. While our room (the last available) was fairly small, it was well maintained and neatly decorated... had large bathroom, mini fridge and rooms stayed nice and cool on the hot shore days. Front desk staff was friendly and professional. Made sure we had what we needed each day--provided beach passes, towels and recommendations. The hotel had an enormous wrap around deck and was perfectly set directly on Spring Lake. Two days were entertained by remote control sailboat regattas on the lake--fun! read more

Ten plus location, wonderful pool area. Lacking in basic amenities as in community trash cans, restrooms, basic conveniences one receives at all hotels, especially for a pricey one like this. Breakfast clean and pleasant, food mediocre. Rooms are individually owned " condos" so owners are responsible for its upkeep and updating . Old and worn out is not " quaint". Our room, was comfortable and had a great view however it was renovated and decorated at least 20 years ago and again is not what one would expect for the high end area and price. read more

Had to be one of the worst beds I ever slept on, and I travel extensively. It was like sleeping on boards and every time you moved or rolled over the mattress mad such a loud noise it woke you up. The A/C was so cold, there were no blankets. we were freezing. we tried to lower the A/C but stayed at 60. There is no one at night at the front desk to get blankets only a phone number. Now breakfast was included but only started at 8am. we had to leave so no breakfast even though it was paid for. room was big, for the most part clean, but outdated. When calling the manager the next day, wasn't pleasant, only offered 10% off for a night of absolutely no sleep. terrible read more

The rooms are exactly as pictured and the building is very pretty. The bed was comfortable. The walls are super thin and the newlyweds upstairs may as well have been in the bed next to me. This was my second time staying in Spring Lake this summer and I strongly preferred my stay at the Ocean House. The Hewitt Wellington was unstaffed throughout the weekend, has cut 100% of their amentities, and basically felt like I rented an AirBnb. There was zero service - self check in/check out, no breakfast, no beach towels or beach chairs, nobody at the desk for directions or suggestions, no cleaning of common areas or rooms. The other hotel I mentioned had tons of staff cleaning all of the furniture as soon as you stood up, snacks and drinks available all day, a multi-course breakfast, super helpful front desk staff, and beach towels and chairs. The bed and room at the Hewitt Wellington were a bit more comfortable, but I'd choose the Ocean House anyday. read more

One of the worst night of sleep I have had for some time. King size bed was lumpy, and shaped like a watershed (peaks at the center). Expected more for what we paid. Otherwise the room appears clean. Location is great. Staff is friendly. Will consider staying at a chain next time, where quality is more dependable and correlates with the price. Microwave wasn't plugged in. Why? Because the outlet only has space to plug in the fridge and a nearby lamp. Poor placement. Parking wasn't an issue, but I can see how it can be. At full occupancy, there will no more more spots. We seem to have gotten the last spot in the back at around 7 pm. read more

I checked into the Hewitt Wellington on Monday, June 13th, 2022 at approximately 10 p.m. The front desk was closed and it is important to note that the lights were off. I could not see the notice on the darkened desk that gave the after-hours help number. Contrary to what Mr. Johnson, the manager, later claimed, there were no other notices in the reception area for the after-hours phone number. There was an envelope with my room key on the desk. Unfortunately, the key was not for the suite that I reserved, but for a smaller room. The result was I had to sleep on the floor that night as I gave the bed to my daughters. Next morning, the front desk clerk admitted the hotel's mistake and was very apologetic and helpful. The first chance that I had to speak to the manager, Mr. Johnson, was on Wednesday. I informed Mr. Johnson of the hotel's mistake and the fact that I had to sleep on the floor Monday night. Mr. Johnson informed me he would only refund me the difference between the price of the small room and the suite for Monday night. In light of the inconvenience caused by the hotel's mistake, I was of the opinion that Mr. Johnson could have done better to redress this. This was and is not about the amount of money involved, but the fact that I wanted some acknowledgement that the hotel had fumbled this situation. Mr. Johnson was unfortunately not apologetic or indeed professional as regards my respectful sharing of the facts with him. When I asked to speak to the owner, I was informed that the Hewitt Wellington was owned by a Home Owners' Association and that Mr. Johnson was where the buck stopped, so to say. Mr. Johnson then offered to take one night off my three night stay, if I left immediately. Again, all I was looking for was a token acknowledgement of the inconvenience caused by the hotel's mistake. Mr. Johnson badly needs a refresher course in Hotel Management 101 and Good Manners. He seems to be of the opinion that he is not answerable to the Home Owners' Association board that hired him, but I will continue to share my experience with the Spring Lake Chamber of Commerce and other appropriate bodies. read more

DO NOT- repeat DO NOT stay at this hotel. It is pretty, rooms are decent (albeit with maintenance issues, ie shades sprung, multiple bulbs out, etc.). But the main reason is inadequate parking. There are only as many parking spaces as guests, but these are not reserved for hotel guests ! Many are used by those going to the very popular hotel restaurant Whispers. So if you don't grab a spot by say 8 pm, all may likely be taken you are out of luck, as there is NO street parking allowed. As I write this, my wife has been sitting in our car for almost 2 hours waiting for a spot to open. (I can no longer drive due to stroke damage.) She is in tears. I stayed here last weekend with my fiancé. This hotel is beautiful! Spring Lake is a gorgeous town. Everything about this hotel was lovely. We stayed in Room #6 (Lake view with Private Balcony). I took my fiancé here as a surprise birthday present and he couldn't stop raving about it. The Hewitt Wellington is also conveniently located near Six Flags (Our main destination). If they paid as much attention to the inside of the rooms and training their staff, as they do to their outside garden, this would be a 5 star bed and breakfast. Staff: They have the most unaccommodating staff I've ever experienced. We wanted to ride bikes. Woman: "You can walk to the beach". Could we have a late check-out? "We don't do late check-outs". Could we take our beach passes to the beach and bring them back by noon? "No, beach passes need to be turned in at checkout" Very unaccommodating. After 9pm there is no one at the inn to assist with any problems/questions you may have. Cleanliness/Room problems: Good luck trying to work the TV. Light bulbs were burnt out in the room, there were big holes in the towels. The toilet didn't look clean, there were hairs along the lip of the bathtub. I'm really glad I didn't read any of the reviews here before I booked this place, because it's definitely been one of the better placed I've stayed - and I don't give 5 stars to any business all that often. It's really quite shocking to me that anyone would give less than four stars to this place, given the quality of my experience. I was in Spring Lake for business and I picked this place because it was rather close to where I needed to be. When I mentioned where I was staying to my colleagues (who live in Spring Lake), they indicated that this place was better than a couple of other places where I could have stayed and it seemed like I made a good choice from their perspective. I found the place to be quite charming and well-kept. The only two issues I had were that the carpet seemed to be slightly old (but not ripped or stained or anything, just a little faded) and my door stuck a little bit. When I got there, one of the staff took me up to the room and showed me how to open the door. I did have a bit of a problem getting it open myself the first time, but I didn't find it to be a big ordeal. Otherwise the towels and sheets were clean, the TV and air conditioner worked fine, there was plenty of lighting in the room, and everything looked and felt nice. The staff were extremely friendly to me. They were more than willing to converse with me and make recommendations for things to do, etc. Even though I arrived a bit early, they let me check in early since my room was ready. I didn't find them to be unaccommodating at all, but then again I did read all the rules listed on their website ahead of time and I don't think "I'm special and the rules don't apply to me and if someone doesn't bend them, they're not accommodating." If they hadn't let me check in early, I would have understood. For breakfast there was cold or hot cereal, toast, english muffins or bagels with the appropriate spreads, cut up fresh fruit, cold hard boiled eggs, OJ, milk and coffee, a few breakfast sandwiches that could be microwaved, and some pastries. It wasn't anything spectacular and if you need a hot breakfast you should go elsewhere, but the spread was equal to what I've seen as the 'continental breakfast' at a number of hotels. The place is located only two blocks from the beach and right across from a trout stocked lake, so it's a good location in that sense. It's a little bit farther of a walk to most of the restaurants, but I made it in about 10-15 minutes. The only restaurant on site is quite expensive so I didn't eat there, but the places I did eat in town were very good. I had never even heard of Spring Lake prior to my journey there but based on my experience, I plan to come back and stay here again because it really was a wonderful experience. read more

My wife and I have previously stayed at the hotel. During our last stay we notices a significant upgrade in both facade and especially the management and the staff. We were greeted by Deanne who was extremely curtious and helpful during our entire stay. We also met the manager, his name is Matthew who was equal nice and responsible for the upgrade. There is a great BYOB restaurant in the hotel making is so convenient for the guests. We spent a lot of time on the beautiful deck and even enjoyed a couple grasses of wine there. If you are looking for a very nice place to stay in Spring Lake, I would recommend the hotel. The price is competitive, the staff is excellent and the athmosphere is good. read more

I understand that it is tough to run an establishment these days, and I will try not to comment on anything I think could be pandemic related. And I will also note that the gentleman who seemed to be in charge was lovely. However, this is more of a mediocre B&B than a hotel (but with hotel prices, to be sure). The breakfast is beyond poor: stale, defrosted Thomas' bagels and croissants, butter and cream cheese out without refrigeration so runny, sugared cereals, and a few store-bought, mass-produced pastries. There isn't even water; you have to go to the lobby and take from the small decanter there. The (one!) ice machine was broken and a repairman unavailable due to a post-Covid shortage, but their solution was a cooler filled with three bags of ice and no scoop, so people put their hands in the bags to get the ice. That's just gross.). Our rooms each had one half-used roll of toilet paper. No spares. When it ran out, we had to call the emergency number (because it was after 6pm when the front desk closes). It was pretty clear no one vacuumed between stays (there is no housekeeping during your stay, I assume because of COVID, which I understand). One of our bathrooms had no fan and only a small window for ventilation. Suffice to say, it took 20 minutes to defog the mirror after a shower. (Much of these sort of deficiencies are attributed by the hotel to the age of the building, but the other room we booked did have a fan in the bathroom...). Other than the one kind gentleman, the attitude of those at the front desk was along the lines of "We just work here. Not my problem." A shame because the hotel's location is great. In fact, I am sure that's why they can get away with these prices and poor service. read more

My husband and I took a few days for a get-a-way in Spring Lake. What I liked about the Hewitt Wellington: location right on the lake and a short walk to the beach. The hotel is a lovely old building. The staff was attentive and friendly. The rooms were lovely. It was nice having a lovely restaurant in the hotel for dinner our first night. What I didn't like: we had to change rooms due to the noise of drilling from scheduled and unscheduled repairs. They should not have put us in the first room since the noise from drilling was unacceptable and the breakfast is meager. I had to ask for hair to be removed from the bathroom floor. They seem to need better management for maintenance. Part of the problem may be that the rooms are privately owned condos. I wouldn't return. read more

Having never stayed before I wasn't sure what to expect - but it exceeded expectations. Despite it being a busy holiday weekend, everyone on the staff was more than gracious in helping me plan the big surprise that I was planning. The helpful ladies at the front desk even hid flowers and champagne for me. The big weekend was capped off by an amazing meal at Whispers - certainly one of the best restaurants at the Jersey Shore. I don't write reviews, so to get me on here means this place is the best I've experienced after spending years at the Jersey Shore. Great place to stay especially off season when less hustle and bustle (with one caveat see below). Hotel is classy but not pretentious. Friendly owner and staff., Ocean is two blocks away- boardwalk is just perfect for a morning walk- saw alot of walkers and joggers. Nice porch to sit and read a book at end of day. Just be aware they have chairs for beach but apparently only starting Memorial Day so if going down there before then bring your own. Will definitely go back again!. read more

The most important thing you want in a hotel room is cleanliness and our room was not clean. The 50's décor is old & dirty (stains on lamp shades, carpet, furniture). The sheets on the pullout sofa bed were dirty and my kids would not sleep on it unless I changed the sheets myself at 10pm. The bed linens in general looked laundered but stained. The pillows looked so old & stained (no protective pillow covers). The breakfast was sub-par (choice of a few cold cereals, cold bagels, they kept running out of basic black tea which they did not replace, hot water dispenser kept running out of water). We had to go out to buy a decent breakfast. The bathroom door did not close fully and they claimed they weren't aware. The tissues and toilet paper are the super-cheap kind that disintegrate when wet. The TV in the living room was about 24" in depth (had to be 20 yrs old) and the one in the BR had a 10" flat screen (so tiny). There was not a single thing luxurious about our room. To make matters worse, the air condition unit didn't work our last 2 nights there so we had to change rooms. No offer of a partial credit. Really disappointing, this was our 2nd time there but will never return. read more

We just stayed here this last week. While it was off season, we did not get to experience the spring/ summer experience, it was still a very nice stay! A beautiful older hotel that has kept its charm! Our room was very clean and nice. There was a nice continental breakfast every morning with coffee available 24 hours. Smoke alarm started beeping outside our door at 3:00am, one call to on duty maintenance and it was fixed within 10 minutes! If there was one negative, it would be the Wolfgang Puck coffee pods in the rooms and the paper cups. The two just did not make for a good early morning cup of coffee! We would definitely stay here again! Staff was excellent in friendliness, information, and very accommodating! read more
