This establishment is the most disappointing thing since my son. While very promising in its concept, as modern society is in dire need of more third spaces, Hex and company fails to deliver in every conceivable metric imaginable. I came to this establishment with my boyfriend and things got off to questionable start immediately. The server at the front required us to make a reservation, ok no problem. What's questionable about this is that there was clearly space available for two scrawny people such as ourselves. Whatever, man, do your thing. When the time came for us to get seated we were blindsided by a $15 per person surcharge, what the heck! It would have been courteous to have mentioned that when we made our reservation 45 minutes prior. I realize that one cannot contribute to malice what could also be contributed to stupidity, but it came across as a way of swindling and strong arming us. We tried finding a game of dominoes to play while we waited, but alas, there were none available for purchase at the front counter, no big deal, we were certain we would find a game of dominos in the seating area below as there were multiple gargantuan shelves stacked to the ceiling, filled to the brim, practically bursting with board games, looked great from afar. When the time came for us to sit, an aura of sheer panic and despair began to set in. We couldn't find a single game of dominos, no big deal, we were sure that one of the servers would help us out. PSYCHE! We asked multiple servers to help us find a game of dominoes, and they either didn't help, gave confusing advice or a combination of both, very cool! You would presume that people employed to work at a board game themed cafe would know where certain board games are, but no, not this fine establishment! In fact the organization of the entire establishment was severely lacking. To begin with, the tables where people are engaged in board games are practically pressed against the gargantuan and bursting shelves of board games, this makes browsing extremely truncated! If you are introverted, you may burst into flames because you are forced to hover over strangers and interrupt their board game to get what you're looking for, that is of course if you're lucky enough to find it. For example, a heated game of uno was sheepishly interrupted by a stranger seeking something behind my boyfriend. Every guest is a hostage in this establishment, because of the owner's incompetence, very cool. Since we nor any of the disheveled nerds employed in this establishment could find a game of dominoes, we opted instead to play a game of chess, simple enough right? not at Hex and Company! The first set was missing multiple pieces and was damaged to the point of not being useable, the second was some niche four player "update" of chess, which is an insult in its own right. Third time was the charm though, and we played some good games. The food was pricy but inoffensive. The water service, despite giving patrons agency, was severely lacking in the fact that one could only use the smallest cup imaginable, what the heck! Upon leaving the establishment, a server told me to, and I quote "have a good one" how could I possibly have a good one, when you couldn't even find a game of dominoes for us to play. Fantasy role playing with table top games was nothing I've ever done and now the times arrived. In '82 (I was twelve years young) I bought Dungeons and Dragons 3rd edition game, I think it was 3rd edition, but none of my friends were interested. Not the metalheads, not the nerds, not the weirdos, just 1 kid on my block - he was peculiar so I called him Dark Mark. Quite befitting a player was he as the Satanic Panic of '83 was just upon the horizon. You just needed to point and Mark would start marching forward. Turns out you need more than two players and a Dungeon Master so dark Mark and I marveled at the dice and bought figurines and watched everything D&D available. Monsters and Mazes was just released, I think it was Tom Hanks first film, did anyone see it? Then there was the Saturday morning cartoon, it lasted 4 seasons because the kids couldn't get home, apparently they couldn't leave the amusement park. Now 2026 I am both Dungeon Master and player character in our campaign The Lost Mines of Phandalver. The name is Goreville Van Dungeon and I've amassed me Fellowship of a Rogue, a second human fighter, a Cleric and a high elf Wizard. We've battled many foes, obtained many magical potients and golf and it all started by the purchase of The Players Handbook at Hex and Co. We read it together, Althea and I that is. We bought coffee and 20 sided dice and wrote our spells and new adventures. So it's never too late to enjoy RPG's with imaginative friends at any age! great place to chill and play some games! $15 per person for the whole night is a solid deal, and they have a pretty wide selection of games to choose from. ample seating and cozy vibes. i also really appreciated the food/drink menu being so affordable-- so rare to come by these days. i will say, i was craving fries and they were flimsy, a lil soggy and tasted frozen -- but you don't go to a board game cafe for their fried foods i suppose. all in all, a great spot that ill def be back too! read more

This place is a little rough around the edges. Dirty bathroom, trash spilling out of the garbage cans for hours. The board games are all missing pieces to some extent and they are not organized in the slightest. $15-$17 per person to play for 3 hours though, which is a good deal. The food they have is a step above some microwaveable or frozen food but gets the job done if you're hungry. They have beer, wine and a full cafe menu. While this place won't win any awards for aesthetic, service or quality of food/beverage, it's a solid space to spend time with a large group for an affordable price. read more

It was a rainy day in New York so we were looking for something indoors to do and came across this game cafe. We are not the only ones as the cafe was already full! But we put ourselves in the waitlist and we're called about 45 minutes later. It's $15 per person with unlimited game access, it looks like there's no time limit as well . They have any card game you can dream of! We aren't well versed in a lot of games, so we just played Uno and codenames. It's really cute spot for rainy day! Not bad for a couple of hours of games. $15/person. And I like the fact that they give you an hour heads up before they close by 11pm so you can finish up your games with your friends. I am a pretty avid board game player and have played a variety of board games ranging from social deductions like Blood on the Clocktower to Werewolves, to simple games like Unos and card games. Hex & Company, believe to own Uncommon and a couple of gaming cafes in NYC is located on E 11th street and Broadway (fun fact: Broadway is the longest street in America). My friends and I (4 people) stopped by Friday, and I thought it would be difficult to get a table. Lucky for us, a group before us left and we had just avoided a long time at around 9pm. This, we were able to grab a table relatively quick. Once seated, we played games for three hours. There were a variety of games on the wall to select from. Although some regularly played games are getting torn because of overuse. Other than that, we were really happy with the staff and the fact that we were able to have a space to chill and play games. Would I personally come back here again? Probably not as I do play board games with my friends free of charge. However, it is still a good time to bring your friends to! Especially where you can find almost every possible game there is in the market. read more

It probably depends on who is working, but the past 2 times the girl running the front was unhelpful, on her phone, and didn't seem to manage the wait list that attentively. Don't think I'll be returning to this location any time soon because the staff really left a bad taste. Nice place, hopefully the construction outside will be over sooner than later. The interior is nice and the staff were friendly. If you are just shopping it's probably not worth the trip. The selection is very limited. This place is much more geared towards the table rental aspect. All in all a nice place to hang out for an afternoon. This is my first time visiting a Hex Co. There are a few locations that I've passed by before but I've never stopped in until now. You basically "rent" a table in the back for a set amount of time and you have access to over 100 board and card games. You check in and pay when you first come in and they have a basic food menu and they also have drinks as well. Once you pay, you grab your table in the back and then pick games you want to play. They bring the food and drinks to your table as well. My group ended up playing a bunch of shorter games. They have Monolopy to UNO and everything in between. My board gaming friends and I have enjoyed coming here for the variety of tabletop games, typically on Monday nights because we haven't needed a reservation. There's a variety of snacks and food, and a good menu of drinks too. When we first went, some of our food orders took a bit longer and they gave each of a free play card, which was awesome and not even that necessary. The extra step for certainly appreciated and we came back again. I'd recommend the pretzel bites and waffle fries, and pass on the spinach artichoke dip. read more

Not as good as its UES location but still always a good time! I came here in a group of 4 friends and had a great time trying out the different boardgames available off the shelf. It was a Saturday afternoon and somewhat busy but not too busy that you couldn't find a seat. Their waitlist / reservation system is a bit strange because they have you wait around even though there's plenty of tables around without any reservation tags. The food was decent - we only had the tator tots but will try other things next time. Unfortunately, this location does not stand up to the UES one in terms of drinks because they has no alcoholic beverages available (not even beers) and their smoothie machine was also not working. We came with a reservation with a large group on a Thursday evening -- it was somewhat busy but not packed which was nice. I like that you can make a reservation for a table, so it's not stressful waiting to get seated. I had a good time here! The tables are clean (if a bit small), though the bathroom was a bit disheveled. Perhaps most importantly, I was really impressed by how many games they had on the shelves!! I just wish they had some duplicates of the popular games that were taken, and there were some games that were well worn and almost a bit unplayable so we had to get a bit creative. The waffle fries are quite good on the menu, and the food items and snacks are pretty fairly priced. I would come again with friends. read more

What a huge improvement over the Le Pain Quotidien that used to reside on this corner! It brings me joy every time I walk by this board game café and see it stuffed to the gills with all manner of folks socializing over communal diversions. The diversity of players and playthings span the spectrum. All ages, races, and genders seem represented here. And the games range in complexity from Connect Four to Warhammer. It seems like Hex & Co. truly caters to all, and I love that our neighborhood now has a robust, thriving melting pot. I've only spent part of an afternoon here to meet up with a friend and get in a round of Illiterati. Ironically, I'd purchased the game during its Kickstarter, but never got the opportunity to play until seeing it on the shelves at Hex. If you're into word puzzles (think cooperative real-time Scrabble with a storyline), I highly recommend. There's a $10 day-long cover ($15 if you book online in advance to reserve a table), but that lets you come and go as you please, and you can play as many games as you like. They also offer coffee and lite bites, so you don't even have to stop dungeon-crawling (or starfaring, or engine-building, or whatever) to refuel. And their retail shop offers a superb selection of games and gaming accoutrements for purchase. read more

This place is an absolute rip-off. Not only do they overcharge for all their games, but their customer service is downright awful. I purchased Mancala/The African Stone Game from this store, expecting a simple, enjoyable Saturday morning teaching my kid math skills through the game. Instead, we opened the box only to find missing pieces--completely ruining our plans. I tried to handle this reasonably by calling the store to let them know they were selling a faulty product. But instead of any kind of helpful response, the person on the phone (who I believe was the manager or owner) told me they could do nothing about it and that I needed to take it up with the manufacturer. Are you kidding me?! So they sell defective products, refuse to take any responsibility, and push the problem onto the customer? That's not just bad business--it's shady and unacceptable. If they won't stand by what they sell, they shouldn't be in business. This is exactly the kind of unethical behavior that makes people wary of supporting small NYC businesses. The coffee was okay and I do enjoy the concept of board game cafes in general as well as the cozy quiet atmosphere they usually have. We discovered a game we've never heard of that we really enjoyed and those are the two reasons this review is a 2 star and not a 1 star. Went in yesterday around 11:30a~12p. The staff wasn't particularly friendly, the person who rang us for the games area was constructing something but didn't stop as he talked to us about the game room, even as we were asking direct questions. Also wasn't very friendly when I went back to get coffees either, the other person behind the counter pouring the coffees asked me questions about the order and was pleasant. The fee is 15 dollars per person per 3 hours, which is a decent amount of time for the price. For that price, however, games should be organized and easy to find. At the very least they should be in good repair. The copy of Ticket to Ride we played was absolutely terrible, missing pieces, and didn't have the instructions. If we didn't already know how to play, we would have been clueless. It's clear that the games are not being tended to and cared for after each use. Two parties of two buys a new copy of that game; inexcusable. Other cafes offer organized selections, table service after you order something, well-tended to libraries, larger food selections, and at a cheaper price per time block, some even offering lower pricing per all day play. They are also in larger cities with the same foot traffic constraints. read more

The customer service here was appaling. The concept is nice, but I would AVOID THIS LOCATION AT ALL COSTS. The front desk staff (two blond ladies on the Thursday I went), one of which is the manager at this location were extremely rude to my party and I. When I arrived I informed them that I would be sitting with my large group, two of whom were already present. She proceeded to go back and forth with me about whether they were or were not present because she had not checked in a group. I informed her that we didn't have a reservation, and again that only two had arrived. I asked her to explain the process as my friends were not aware they needed to pay before sitting. During this entire process the manager was rude and complicating things unnecessarily. My group gradually arrived and each person was charged differently. Staff asked two of my friends if they were students and gave them the discount but did not do so for everyone else, including myself. They also refused to allow in the last person in my party, even though the space practically empty. We had already agreed to leave at 6 to give up the table we were occupying, and at this point it was about 3:30/3:40. There was no reason not to let our last friend in, as again the space was not full of other groups playing. Additionally based on the table signs the next parties would be coming between 6-7:30. FOOD I ordered the breaded chicken sandwich and waffle fries. The chicken tenders in the sandwich were soooo dry and hard like they had been microwaved for a long time. bEverything about this sandwich was dry. Even if I had gotten the mayo on it it would have still been horrible. Waffle fries were standard. read more

Cute shop, but employees are RUDE and ENTITLED!!! Came in here on a busy Saturday with Friends. The place was packed and as we entered, we walked past the coffee area, to look around and pick up Christmas gifts for a friend of ours. Immediately after arriving an employee with glasses and a beard came out to scold my friends and I for not greeting him when we entered. For place demanding so much respect, the whole experience was extremely disrespectful, and odd considering the place was packed. The people who entered after us, didn't say hi and they were NOT publicly scolded. I don't know if it was because my friends and I were Hispanic or what... I didn't feel welcomed at all. Considering we each came in explicitly to spend money on gifts, it was very off putting to be treated this way. We told the bearded, white guy to have a good day and left immediately. I will not be returning to this place again. I will continue to go to games workshop nearby where Scott is super nice. Considering Amazon and eBay are undercutting brick and mortar stores, Hex should reconsider how they treat customers who come in to spend $$$. read more

I honestly had a lot of fun, and the food was pretty okay. A little pricey, but it's Manhattan so it's to be expected. However, shortly after receiving our food, a male employee came up and asked how everything was. After saying everything was great and thanking him for serving us, his tone of voice and demeanor changed to a nasty one. He explained that the workers were underpaid, but then he proceeded to comment how our table ordered around $100 dollars of food (which we didn't) and then said it's customary to tip. We felt guilt tripped, and looking back on it, we honestly feel disgusted with the way he spoke to us--as if we weren't even worthy of being addressed civilly. If we were told their situation in a polite manner, we would have wholeheartedly contributed to support them without even thinking twice. Because we paid for food on the kiosk, we didn't think about tipping since kiosk paying and tipping isn't something we automatically connect together. There has been multiple reviews about this same guy (we're assuming based on our similar experience), and I would not doubt them in the slightest. Definitely left my friends and I in a sour mood after leaving and fully debriefing on what just happened. Unfortunate that such a fun day/time had to be interrupted like that, and we regret tipping for that behavior after a self-victimizing guilt trip. Honestly, if that guy is always working there--I would not recommend coming back to this place. Just find another place that's a bit cheaper to stay at that does not employ that specific individual. read more
