I was charged more than what my initial receipt was. The blonde male bartender had terrible service, when I paid, he didn't even flip the screen to show me what the total was. I screenshotted what I was charged in my bank app because I knew I couldn't trust them. Then a couple days later I checked again and look at that! The amount increased for some reason. I have disputed the transaction with my bank and will never return to this place. The prices on their online menu are also outdated. Which I understood. There was basketball games going on but they decided to put the news on the big screen which completely turned the vibe off. I do not recommend this place. I have receipts for all my claims as well. I was there with my date, and in the middle of our conversation. The same bartender came all the way to our booth, said absolutely nothing. We ducked in here yesterday for happy hour because it was pouring rain out and this was nearby. We were surprised at how busy it was but maybe all the others were here for the same reason. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were not overly friendly but the overall service was ok. My husband and I both asked about the draft IPA options for happy hour. It turns out that only their own "Craftsman" beer were the ones included for the advertised $6 craft drafts. So we both ordered one of their IPA drafts - and while I am a fan of IPAs, I am not a fan of theirs. Neither was my husband. Looks like they have live jazz every Sunday, We would consider coming back for that but won't bother coming here again for happy hour. read more

If you've ever seriously questioned how gentrified the island of Manhattan is, the fact that an edgy hipster cocktail bar like this is located above 125th Street should answer that for you. What a delight. My chum and I came in here to cleanse our palates after a pretty rough margarita experience a few doors down on the same block. We walked 20 feet, I saw this place, said, "I wish we'd gone in here instead," and my chum said, "We can." I realized she was right, and that was that. This is definitely my vibe. Sign me up for exposed brick, obligatory monochrome pictures and lots of wood. I just wish we'd had an appetite to sample more of the menu. We came in here right before a mini rainstorm around 2ish this past Saturday afternoon. Now that I'm thinking about it, literally every place we stopped in at on our trek up Broadway was empty, regardless of the time of day. Was everyone out of town? No idea. Anyway. I don't recall any other customers inside while we were there. Despite an atrocious Old Fashioned the prior weekend that made me dramatically declare I was done with bourbon, all of the hipster leather wore me down and I went with the Craftsman Campfire, conveniently served in a campfire mug. My chum side-eyed it a bit, concerned it was going to be served hot, but it was thankfully a cold beverage that provided a refreshing boost on a muggy summer day. My initial reaction was a little negative - the first few sips tasted like bland iced tea, and I'm not sure why. Maybe it wasn't blended entirely? I didn't really taste the referenced fall flavors (cinnamon, apple, etc.), but once I dropped the lemon garnish in and mixed it around, everything was solid. The service and price point were fine - we actually experienced the opposite of sticker shock when we discovered the cocktails here were around $15 (par for the course, even this far north in Manhattan) versus the $20 next door at the mediocre Mexican place. THIS is the establishment that probably could get away with charging more for the artisanal cocktail goodness. I thought it took a LITTLE long to get the drinks, given that no one else was on the premises, but we weren't in a rush. It also wasn't the kind of situation where we needed waitstaff to check in on us on a regular basis - very DIY here. I just came across this place when I stopped to grab a slice next door. Noticed a good amount of people hanging outside and of course a decent crowd inside. My friend who I was with thought to go inside and get a drink before heading home and we vibed out for a few with the current crowd which seemed to be primarily made up of younger college level people. Can't say it's my normal type of crowd but the people were cool and enjoying themselves so it was a good time to be had for all. I ordered take out from the Craftsman because I was craving an acai bowl. Not amazing but certainly does the job when you are craving for acai. Portion size is decent for the price ($13). This place is just a plain ol' bar. I couldn't help but feel that it lacked soul-- or character or anything to make it stand out. For a place in Harlem, it will have to have more going for it than bartenders in suspenders serving cocktails. The Craftsman took over the space of long cherished dive bar, Paddy's, which offered open mic, karaoke, poetry and live music nights. Tough act to follow for sure but The Craftsman could definitely try harder. The decor is nice but I didn't find anything that would keep me particularly interested in coming back. This place met my need for a pseudo-new spot to kill time while waiting for a friend. Very little representation of neighborhood locals, especially for Harlem. Perhaps I went too early? Bartender wasn't engaging and I felt like I was giving him more hospitality than I received. I tipped well and moved along after my friend arrived. Fun happy hour bar with good drink prices and nice interior, I sort of love that it's coffee shop in the morning and bar at night. It's right by the 1 train which makes it convenient coming up from downtown. We went on a Friday at 6 pm and it was pretty empty, apart from one incredibly loud group at the back of the restaurant. They list wine on the happy hour menu, but it's the same price as it is normally ($8) which feels a little like false advertising. The reason for three stars was the super slow service. For having maybe 6 tables to tend in a restaurant/space that has probably 25-30 tables, we should not have had to continually flag down the waitress for service. It gave the impression that they don't want to tend to guests during happy hour because they know they don't make as much money or something. I don't know, but definitely got annoying. Dropped by last night (Tuesday in Dec) to check out happy hour. I came solo. I had 2 glasses ($8 each) of delicious hot cider with bourbon which the bartender recommended. I also had a chicken parm panini sandwich. Total bill w/o tip: $30. Overall, It's a nice setting to bring people: the bartender was cordial and attentive. And, the establishment is well designed. This is like a downtown hip spot located up in Ole Harlem. It appears to be mostly visited by Columbia students and upper west side residents. It's never packed and spacious. I often come here during the day to study/do work because they have open window seating, and I enjoy looking out at the world. I've had a lot of the various menu items ranging from the coffee to the smoothies to the smoothie bowls to the cuban sandwiches. Some of the foods that are my favorite: Cuban sandwiches, deviled eggs (it's $7 during HH), the make your own smoothie bowls. I wish they had more avocado on their avocado toast. I also wish the smoothie bowl options were cheaper! I really like the people during the day, they are really chill/nice and accommodating. The folks who work there later in the night can be kind of brusque, and I'm huge on customer service. Anyways, I'll probably still be frequenting this spot, so I obviously feel like it has more pros than cons. read more

I made my own bowl and didn't ask for banana but got banana. Super unripe banana. Only a few blueberries and huge strawberries. I only tasted a few bites and it wasn't good. I realized there were nuts in the granola and had to stop eating it. They looked like walnuts, but in the description it didn't say there were nuts in the granola. The almond butter was hard as rock and I was able to pick it up like a cookie. The acai base was icy. The super green juice is good, really sweet for some reason. read more

I frequent this wonderful trendy bar, Irish pub, juice bar, and cafe that's all one in the same about once, twice, or three times a week. I'm never disappointed. Everything is Awesome here! The staff is always very welcoming, courteous, and attentive. Their cocktails are top shelf and creative, their juice bar is innovative, and their coffee is bold and delicious. The Craftsman also has a decent wine and craft beer selection. They rotate their craft beer cans fairly often, and they have a delicious North Fork red wine on tap. Further, the place has a very good happy hour, their food is wholesome, fresh, and satisfying. And they have a cool ambiance, especially at night when the candles come out and the lights go down. Lastly, they have jazz on Sunday nights. It makes for a great date night spot. What more can you ask for? read more

The food here is unfortunately a real disappointment. I came hoping for a late night bite to pair with one of their signature cocktails, and ordered the shrimp tacos. The food took a long time to arrive, and once I got it, the shrimp were cold and rubbery. They definitely tasted frozen, and overall the tacos had little favor. Came with a group of friends on a Friday night at 8pm for a quick round of drinks. Since it is close to Columbia University, it was really easy to get to. I love the vibe Craftsman strives. It's laid back, chill, and an overall decent place to go catch up with friends for a drink. It's not too crowded on a Friday night, which I enjoy. I got the She's in fashion drink. I really like how they used a lot of whiskey to make their drink, and the orange peel added a nice flavor to it. Visiting from California and had to try the Açaí bowl here in NYC..ordered the build your own Açaí Bowl..bananas, pineapples, mango, granola and peanut butter. I wish I could give negative stars for the horrific experience in dealing with this restaurant.The order that we placed never made it to our apartment, as the person making the delivery threw our order all over the basement wall and floor, and then broke a TRASH CAN, and threatened and THREW A FIRE EXTINGUISHER at our maintenance man. Which fortunately missed him, but damaged the door! I have no idea how this man gained access into the building as he never rang the intercom for entry. My wife phoned The Craftsman wanting to speak to a manager, and was just hung up on by a lady at the restaurant as she was explaining the situation and looking for help. This is unbelievable that your business takes ZERO RESPONSIBILITY for the deliveries, or for the safety of your customers. We have ordered from this business numerous of times and I can not believe that we are being left to deal with this on our own. We will seek a way to ban this restaurant from delivering to our building as well as look into pressing charges against the delivery man. I will make sure to share this crazy and deplorable "experience" with THE CRAFTSMAN on as many social media platforms as possible. In response to The Craftsman's comments: Unfortunately when it happened the person who was delivering the food represented 'your' restaurant and when we called you, the person we spoke with was not sympathetic, helpful, or seemingly concerned. They were only defensive and rude. So I feel like that does have a lot to do with you. As a former frequent customer, the least I would have expected is an apology and an effort to put me in touch with the right people. I hope that your future customers don't have to deal with the experience that we did. And that when they open up the door for a delivery from the craftsman, their safety is not at risk. This place looks as promising as you could imagine. It has a cool exterior and a solid layout. They don't have table service but you order at the counter and they bring it to you. On first glance the menu looks solid until they tell you they are out of half the things on there. They have everything from acai bowls to flavored popcorn. It is eclectic to say the least. Heres the 2nd problem. It is right next to the train and every time the train passes on the platform above you literally can't hear the person across from you talk. It is loud since the windows were open. With all that being said the acai bowl was pretty good. The acai had a perfect texture and the fruit was fresh. No complaints only compliments. The shrimp tacos were messy and came in a cool presentation but did not taste fresh. The lady did mention a lot of items like the salads are pre-made so you can't make many changes to the dish. I also tried the popcorn which is a good snack. It has cayenne on it or something like that. Kinda spicy but pretty good. They had good wifi so at least I got some work done. Note: I only came for breakfast, so this review is for the Cafe only. I tried: - the Ipanema acai bowl (acai, blueberries, strawberries, banana, coconut flakes, almond butter, chia seeds and granola). Pretty solid, though I had low expectations for NYC! Very generous portions at a good price; my only complaint with this is that the acai was way too icy. It was 96 degrees in the morning, but I didn't feel like eating a slushy. I think this is an easy improvement, and it'll make their acai bowls that much more irresistible. Granola is house-made, and very tasty at that. Will be back for more acai and to try some other items! I do hope they will improve on that icy acai though. :) read more

This is a cool and clever place. A juice bar by day. A beer and cocktail bar by night. It's hard to fault a place for its popularity. But I came to The Craftsman one night, and it was simply slammed. Loud. Crowded. It was not the kind of place to hang out, enjoy a crafted cocktail, and have a civilized conversation. During the day, it's significantly emptier. Huzzah! But maybe that's because many of The Craftsman's cold pressed juices are pre-bottled and stored in the fridge. I guess that's good for speed of service, but I couldn't find the watermelon juice because all the pink had settled to the bottom. I guess that's good. It's a natural product. And nothing that a little shaking couldn't fix. But part of me feels like when paying premium prices, one should be getting a premium product. Still, both that and the ginger water totally hit the spot on a hot summer day in Manhattan. In my book, that's A-OK. It has it's high points. It has it's low points. You may be one of the people who love it. Maybe if I were younger. Maybe if I lived in Manhattan and was more accustomed to the crush of humanity. Maybe I happened to hit the place on a particularly busy night. Most likely I'll be back, because it's in my sister's neighborhood, and during the day it's a chill spot to hang. Quirky little spot that's great to grab a bite or sip some coffee. Health food cafe by day and bar by night. The bar is a little higher quality, and has better service. The 147 cocktail ($10) was a hit on a warm summer night, with its cucumber vodka and sweet and tangy lemon flavors. Pair it with the truffle popcorn and some craft beers and you have all the ingredients for a chill time with your friends. For the craft cafe, I love the menu and the healthy options but noticed that they have some kinks still to work out. The pluses of the craft cafe: + they open at 8 am--even on Sunday + their smoothies are well balanced and not overly sweet + their acai bowls are tasty with a large portion of acai + they offer warm breakfasts too, with egg bagels or egg croissants + the lunch sandwiches are yummy The kinks: - they open by 8 but even at 8:30 their acai may be defrosting and not ready until 9 - at $8 a smoothie, it's pretty pricey (only $2 less than their 147 evening cocktail!) For 2 smoothies, a chia pudding, 2 bagels, and a drip coffee, our total was around $45 - the warm food takes 30 minutes to prepare - my coffee had grounds in it -- maybe they didn't brew it early enough or were sloppy with the filter? Not sure how this happens. - lunch service is slow too. Expect it to take 30-40 minutes to get your food. So, 4 stars for the bar, 2.5 for the cafe. read more

Cocktails to go and packaged incredibly conveniently (available for pick up and also on Grubhub). The Craftsman has a large variety of cocktails to go (not just canned margaritas like other places are offering). The best part about this is they've packaged the cocktail into plastic bottles as you see in the picture so you don't have to drink it right away. I was also given cups of ice separately so I can use it for when I am ready to drink. In addition, they also sell frose! I went a bit early so wasn't able to try but there are four flavors I'm definitely going back for. The person working there (whom I believe was likely the owner) was also very nice. I'm a Columbia architecture student and I frequent this bar because of their healthy food choices; specially late at night when I get lazy to cook (kitchen closes at 1am). I'm also a health freak, picky with food, and enjoy good tasting food. The bar itself has a nice decor and the people that work there are always friendly and look out for you late at night - They have the Irish charm. During the day it is a cafe (I come here during the day to make drawings, write, and send emails) and at night time it's a bar. My #1 favorite food here is the Ipanema Bowl which is an acai bowl with, blueberries, strawberries, banana, coconut flakes, almond butter, chia seeds and house-made granola - I eat this for breakfast, dinner, or lunch. I'm also a sucker for Laylita's Deviled Eggs, they are really delicious too. The staff is very helpful/knowledgeable when it comes to drinks - but my favorite beer is Guinness, favorite drinks: The Penicillin, The Iris, and The Immigrant. The cold brew coffees in bottles are very tasty - they also make good coffee late at night, which works great during deadlines. They make a really good meat pie, and at night I'm usually getting an avocado toast or the kale salad. You should definitely stop by and check it out, specially at night, for a few drinks. I recommend this place. It's pretty chill, with a nice ambiance. Definitely one of my favorite places uptown by Columbia. read more

Local neighborhood bar, much needed around this part of town. If you want a quality, carefully made cocktail you can count on the bar tenders here to get the job done. A plus, that even though it is by Columbia the rowdy college crowd is non existent and you can enjoy your cocktail. I seldomly eat here, but am a huge fan of their charcuterie board. Definitely worth it! The cheese and meat selection is plenty, plus the nuts and gherkins give it a nice touch. Other favorites are the truffle popcorn and deviled eggs. The avocado toast had a minimal amount of avocado. It was on extremely bland, low-quality bread. The attempt to hide the small quantity of avocado under a massive amount of sprouts seems dishonest rather than intended to make the toast taste better. There was some pepper, tomato, and pepper flakes on the toast - but the the tomato was bland and didn't seem fresh at all, and the rest of it just fell flat. Look, I know when I buy avocado toast that I'm taking a leap of faith that it's on a nicer bread, with a more generous portion of avocado, with some flavorful additions that make it worth it. But this is absolutely not worth you $8.50. The Chai Tea was a chai tea-bag to which they added cinnamon, brown sugar, and milk. Ok, but not worth $4. read more

My boyfriend and I wanted a nightcap after my birthday dinner this week. We stumbled upon the Craftsman as we were walking to the 125 St. 1 train stop. I often forget that there is a strip of a few bars and hangout spots on Broadway over there! I could see that the Craftsman was dimly lit with edison lightbulbs from outside, so naturally I wanted to go in. The only complaint I have about this place as a bar is the wait time for drinks (15 min when there's only 3 tables of people in the place?! Doesn't make sense...) however, everything else was cool. The bar has a hip vibe but isn't crowded - so you can go somewhere classy but still hear yourself talk! I don't think we're downtown anymore!! I don't remember the name of the drink I had, but it had mezcal and was delicious. The waitress we had was really sweet; when she learned it was my birthday she brought a brownie with strawberries free of charge! My boyfriend and I had a great experience.
