I stopped by to gear up for a busy week with bagels, cream cheese, baked goods, and coffee. It was so tough to choose between their plethora of perfectly crafted carbs, but I ended up selecting a variety of bagels and their strawberry n' cream jammy. My bagel picks included the salt, everything, and onion. I also snagged their handmade cream cheese, which is an absolute must. The strawberry and jammy was sweet and tasty, the perfect combo for my morning latte. Can't wait to return and get my hands on a fresh loaf of bread! Overall, a great Saturday tradition. read more

I'm on a fresh-homemade-sourdough kick these last handful of months. I switch off between a few "dealers". Haha I drive by here multiple times a month and finally stopped in. I got a French baguette and a loaf of the Rose Street Tin, which is a sandwhich loaf. I ate some of the baguette on the way home. It was VERY crunchy and crispy. Lots of crust on the entire thing; didn't seem like there was much soft inside bread, if that makes sense. Both of the ends were really hard and not easy to eat. The sandwich loaf was fresh and good. More soft "insides" on this one and also a very crunchy/crispy crust. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, just mentioning it. I made a sandwhich with this bread. It was hard to eat as the slices were cut quite thick. I also made some avocado toast out of this bread. I enjoyed it that way and think it's the way to go with the thickness of it. Hey Brother Baker is a new bakery that has been in soft opening in Long Beach for a few months. Before opening this Brick and Mortar location, they made their rounds in the farmers market scene. You can still find their breads in LB and Cerritos markets on weekends. Refer to their IG for their exact locations. What brought it to my attention were their signature breads, bagels, and their corn cookie. Parking is street parking. Came as early as possible before their 8am opening time on Saturday in order to get the best selection and the freshest breads. The baguette coated $5 and it had a perfect crust and airy crumb. The sausage roll and strawberry and cream pastry feature the characteristic flavors in a nicely flaky puff pastry. The sausage roll is a fancy pig in a blanket, and the strawberry pastry was like a turnover. I bought their salt bagel with cream cheese and it was a really nice bagel. The outside had a nice chew and the bread was quality. The viral corn cookie is really interesting as you get crispy corn flavors. It would be interesting to see them add options for seasonal flavors (like strawberry or guava jams) on top of it. Overall, I definitely would come back, but it would be mainly for their airy $5 French baguette. Today, I ate it with raspberry jam and euro butter, but it would be equally good with cheese and prosciutto. This is a great addition to LB. I look forward to their grand opening. read more

Hey Brother Baker on Termino & Anaheim is finally open! Every time I'd drive or walk by, it always seemed closed, so I was excited to finally catch them during business hours. They specialize in fresh baked goods ranging from cookies and pastries to bagels and artisan bread, and everything looked incredible. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with lots of moms, dads, and kids stopping in. The space is spotless, and the A/C feels amazing on a hot summer day. I also grabbed the Orange Mocha, and it was refreshing with a nice citrus-chocolate flavor that's perfect for the heat. This place is close to our apt. It just opened up and they're still going through their soft opening. Before the Christmas break, we decided to check it out. It's a small place with some seating and fresh artwork on the wall. People line up and you walk by the bread they bake fresh every day. We chose a baguette, Black Garlic levain, pain au chocolate, sweet bun and two cookies. The baguette was crispy perfect. After slicing some pieces off, we spread some butter on a piece and went to work. The center was chewy and soft, the crisp outside was beautiful. The sweet corn cookie was like a sugar cookie and cornbread coming together to make something great. The same can be said of the sweet bun. As if a croissant and cinnamon roll got together and made this one. The pain au chocolate was terrific. We split it in half and it looked like they stuck a chocolate bar in the center. It was perfectly rectangular. We haven't gotten to the levain but our idea involves grilled cheese on an everything bread. Should be great. read more

I've tried Hey Brother at their new and official storefront twice now and let me say, that salt bagel will have me coming back each time. Everything is deliciously fresh and made with great ingredients. I didn't get a photo but their oatmeal cookie is also one of my favorites, it has pepitas and cherries which are great flavor additions. They lay all their options out on the table (literally) so you're able to see what they have absolve, if you don't see it, they likely sold out for the day. Tip! Try and go closer to opening for your best choice of options. The line moves pretty quickly so don't get discouraged if it seems long when you arrive. They also have a full coffee bar, which I have not yet tried but has some good options like a White mocha and orange mocha. I also loved that you can actually see everything laid out instead of the usual behind-glass display. It feels more casual + approachable. What We Ordered: Everything Bagel -- 10/10. Absolute star. Cream cheese is +$2 and the bagel wasn't sliced, so you'll need to DIY it. Spam croissant -- disappointing. The spam pieces were teeny tiny compared to what I expected. Pear + gruyère danish -- 10/10. So good I'd come back specifically for this. Service / Wait: We waited about 15 minutes on a Saturday morning. The line moved a bit slower since the menu/selection isn't really visible until you reach the front, so people take time deciding. Good For: Perfect for grab-and-go pastries for a small get-together, or picking up a loaf of bread to snack on all week. Tiny storefront, big personality. Tucked in a tiny space next to Pulp Fiction comics on Anaheim (good luck with parking!), this spot gets crowded quickly and sells out of some of their not-a-loaf offerings kinda fast on Saturday mornings. We've gone two weeks in a row, and the selection looked way different at 9am last week versus 10am this week. This is definitely a "the earlier the better" type of spot if you've got a particular pastry in mind. So far we have tried: Black Garlic Levain - Super seedy sourdough with big ol' hunks of sweet fermented garlic. It's as delicious and complex as it sounds. Butter Croissant - Watching my small child eat this is hysterical because it's almost as big as his head. He still managed to eat the whole thing though so it must have been good. Sausage Roll - Puff pastry hugging a dense chunk of sausage. Pretty sure it's a bratwurst hiding in there. Whatever it is, it's filling! Curry Potato - Carb on carb action, it's another puff pastry only this time it's folded over mild Japanese-style curry potatoes, carrot, and onion . The curry flavor is rich with no heat, and is slightly sweet from carrots mixed in. Hey Sister White Mocha - It sounded super promising with the whole pink peppercorn and lemon zest, but in all honesty it was just fine. Perhaps because I got it iced? I'm not sure. On this first visit to their brick-and-mortar bakery, I tried the pain au chocolate and an extra hot latte. Saw this little bakery on my way to work and stopped by. It's been in this spot for about 4 months and it says soft opening outside. The staff told me they have been around for 4 years at farmers markets and stuff. Glad to see them in a brick and mortar cuz their pastries were delicious!! After reading a Facebook post on best chocolate chip cookies in Long Beach and someone mentioned Hey Brother Baker i had to try it out since I was down the street! Parking was not the easiest but after this cookie it's worth trying to find a parking spot. As soon as I walked in I was greeted with a friendly smile and it felt very welcoming! Coffee Cake -- moist, semi-sweet and dense. Great crumble on top. Perfect with a coffee or milk. Corn Cookie -- tasted like a sugar cookie. No prominent corn flavor. Chocolate Chip Sea Salt -- top tier. This is soo good. Not a soft cookie but one of the more sturdier ones that have a bite to them. Wish it had a more even distribution of salt but otherwise solid! Came in around 12pm and there wasn't a lot of options left. I got the Pain Au Chocolate, Chocolate Chip and Oatmeal Cookie. The cookies are big. The chocolate chip was crunchy and hard on the outside and edges and soft on the inside and there's a sprinkle of salt. hmm salty! The oatmeal cookie was an oatmeal cookie. It was good, but I prefer the chocolate chip. The Pain Au Chocolate was flaky and the inside had tasty chocolate and the inside was soft. hmm soft!! Picked up a baguette from them when shopping last year at a Long Beach Cheese Shop that they supply. Since we no longer have a baguette shop that we like in Long Beach, decided to stop in here on a weekday, even though it was a bit out of the way. Parking is painful (street only, no dedicated lot). It was busy, with most folks picking up coffee and pastries to start their day. While I waited in line deciding what to order, noticed that there was no bread in front, so was worried that they had already sold out. Learned at the front that bread would be available the following day. When I asked if that was normal (assuming it had sold out), the associate explained that because they were off for New Years Day, no bread would be available after an off day since it takes a day to prepare the dough. Makes sense and something for them to broadcast if wanting to be a place people will search out.. So ended up buying what was recommended by reviews: 2 sweet corn cookies ($4.50 each). They were large and crispy on the edges, with the butteryness that one would expect, but because they were so large, found them to be a bit chewy on the inside which isn't my preference....wasn't really sure what the corn added to it. Leaving my chiropractor's office and having wanted to stop by their storefront, I finally did. I already love Hey Brother's sourdough bread so I controlled myself and opted for this gorgeous onion and Gruyère pastry. First of all, it smelled amazing and it was hard not to take a bite as I drove home. After taking my picture, I took my first bite. It has a nice crunchy texture at first and then you get to the melt in your mouth onions and just the right amount of cheese. The pastry on the inside was moist and exceptional in both the texture and flavor. I feel so blessed that they are mere minutes from my home. I just wish they opened earlier during the week. I have tried their jalapeno cheddar bread, which is seasonal, their brioche, as well as many other loaves of bread, their fogase. I have tried many pastries, chocolate chip cookie, oatmeal cookie, corn cookie, apple jammie pocket, etc... My all time favorite has been the Fogase and oatmeal cookies. They have coffee too but it's not strong enough for my liking. The bread is exceptionally good and fresh. Definitely recommend you try them out.
