Great old time drive in. The inside is like you stepped back in time 50 years. Everything inside looks like it has been there forever and is original. Nothing fake or made up to look old, it is the whole place. They bring the food out to your car in togo containers, no trays that sit on your car window. They do have picnic tables under the drive in and people park under the drive in to eat inside too. It is open for breakfast and lunch and breakfast is served all day. Fun place. Waitress or car hop was extremely nice. The grilled cheese and seasoned fries were good. The seasoned fries consisted of some seasoning shaken on the fries, good though. Great authentic place. I've always wondered why the waitresses have such a high turnover. A recent visit explained it perfectly. The management is rude, inefficient and mean to her waitstaff. She picks on certain waitresses and she doesn't hide her ignorance or disdain. Totally unprofessional, and not something I care to witness over breakfast. If you can deal with that, then the pancakes are pretty decent. With that said so are mine so I guess I'll make them at home. read more

I have been going to this place ever since I was little... It still looks like it did back then. It is very dated. But when you walk in you feel like you are at home. The food isn't bad at all. I used to go there for breakfast every morning when I was a senior in high school one of my favorite memories. Unfortunately this place is still cash only. The waitresses are local and are pretty down to earth. If this place got a complete face lift and allowed cards it would be a solid 4 stars. The Hi-Hat dinner is quite a dive. The decor is very dated, the seats worn and and tables thoroughly scuffed. The stage is set for either an amazing breakfast or a poor one, but we all know that there is no middle ground for these places. My expectations were set high as the delicious fresh coffee was brought to us. My food arrived to a huge ham steak perfectly grilled - a touch of sear but no burning, heaping portion of home fries, over easy eggs with no browning, and rye toast. My wife an order of sausage gravy on several large biscuits and a side of hash. The ham tasted delicious and set the stage for the rest which was where the let down began. The home fries were completely unseasoned and terribly bland, one of my egg yolks cracked and instead of fixing it they hid it under the other egg. To end my meal the toast was thick but tasteless, so thick that the butter on it was nearly undetectable - for all I knew I ate a piece of buttered cardboard. My wife's biscuits and gravy fared a bit better. The biscuits had too little salt in their mix so they were a bit crumbly. A bit more cooking of the roux, a touch more butter, and a bit more sausage would have made the gravy great - as it stood it was pretty good. The hash was not home made but was very good for a pre-made item, not too salty good potato to meat ratio, but could have used another minute or two cooking to get a nice sear. The service staff was excellent, our waitress asked our drink order quickly and delivered our coffee's immediately - they were also kept them full without asking. Overall the food would have been about 2.5 - 3 star, just ok. The things that really brought it down for us was the lack of flavor on the home fries, lack of care about the broken yolk and hiding it, and the misses on the gravy and biscuits. read more

Go here over A1 Diner in Gardiner. It is significantly better. The place is a dump inside and the locals are gross but the food is solid and the prices are reasonable. They have daily specials for both meals and desert. One regular customer told me "you know the deserts are made fresh daily because they sometime wipe them off the board when they run out." I am not sure this is true but they looked pretty good. The servings are quite generous so you will need to be quite hungry to enjoy the full meal and desert experience. I recommend both breakfast and the meals, my group ordered both and the reviews were all satisfactory to strong. Overall, I would return, do not let looks deceive you, this is one of the top food locations in the area. read more

This is some of the best breakfast around. I love the homey feel of the small diner. I especially love the take out option, so I can eat breakfast at home in my pjs. Weekends are pretty busy, but they do very well to keep up as long as you can find a seat among the locals. They keep the coffee fresh and flowing. The waitstaff are always smiling, even at the ungodly early hours. The grilled blueberry muffins are amazing with hot melted butrer, moist center and crispy edges. The pancakes are fluffy and big and perfect when coated in maple syrup. The bacon is crispy and the sausage flavorful with a nice snap. The eggs are always cooked to order. A charming little dive. Yes, they only take cash or check, but there is an ATM on premises; so it's not the end of the world. Omelettes are abundant. Pancakes are fluffy and stacked high. They have really good coffee. Waitresses are friendly. Try the raisin bread with your breakfast. I find it doesn't taste factory-made like most do. We usually go out for breakfast here or another diner nearby. On a recent visit, I selected a special right off the board. $5 and change for some eggs, meat, and pancakes. The food was okay. The eggs were dry and over scrambled. The pancakes and bacon were what you would expect. The coffee is never anything to write about. But, let us be honest: you accept that when the price is $5-7 and change. When I got the check, my $5 meal cost $7. The waitress explained that the specials were priced for the weekday and just hadn't been updated. I could understand on a Saturday morning...but not a Sunday morning. When I pressed for the $5 price, the manager did nothing to correct the situation. She ignored me and left the poor waitress speechless. It ruined the whole experience for me. If I knew that I was paying $7. I would have ordered biscuits and gravy or an omelet. I won't be eating at the Hi-Hat Pancake House again. Dave's Diner here we come! read more

Seat yourself. accepts cash or checks only, atm onsite. This is a busy establishment and you will want to park more on the parking lot's periphery if possible. Either front entrance will do. From the bar stools and some of the booths you can watch the kitchen action. There's a regular breakfast/ lunch menu with a rotating list of specials. There's nothing erratic or unusual about the options, and i decided to go with pancakes + sausage + eggs over medium + coffee. Service was prompt enough and the food was decent, except that i had one egg that was served over easy. After the first cup of coffee and throughout the meal, i was not offered one single refill or top-up. No water on the table, nobody checked in to see whether the food was sufficient. My knife was not cleaned, so i'd set it on the end of the table. The server didn't return to the table once until the very end when she brought the bill. There are places nearby where you can receive better customer service at the same meal prices, and we will be headed elsewhere next time. read more

Been there before loved it, not sure what changed but first off my kids didn't get anything to drink until after their breakfast came, waitress never came to check on us so we never got coffee refilled until we finally got the waitresses attention after about 10-15 mins of waiting. Then the food came and my pancake was raw sent it back after I had cut into it to see it was raw, get it back and they didn't even remake it they just cooked my cut up pieces of pancake. my eggs looked like they just cracked the egg on the plate and called it good. So between the service and the food we can say this establishment will no longer be getting our business. very disappointed. read more

Solid place to grab a quick bite to eat. We were happy with both the food and service. There was nothing overly exciting about the food, just the breakfast basics done right as anyone would expect from a pancake house. The menu prices were very fair, especially for the portions we received. It was a busy weekend morning (the place was full and no open seats when we first arrived). Our waitress informed us having to wait for an open table was normal on the weekend, as the place was a favorite to many locals. That being said, we got a table quickly, our food arrived fast and our coffees remained full. We will be back, as we'd like to try some of the lunch items in the near future. read more
