Delicious! Love the food, the service and the location. We always stop by when we are in town.

I drove from Greenville to meet a friend here. The ambience and experience is totally worth it; my friend had suggested this spot and I really enjoyed it. The service was superior and very friendly. The server was in tune with our situation; did not make us feel like we were overstaying our welcome, while we did spend 2 hours catching up. The food was very good (I got Korean bbq sliders/her ham grilled cheese), not outstanding, but in line with the overall experience and I would come back. Feeling like you are in a 1940s train car was super cool!!

Would you believe that I had never been here before? We were in town to look at a house, as we are moving to the area. Stopped in for dinner. I LOVE a retro diner. I was expecting the typical diner food, but this was not that. It was BETTER. It had a very unique menu. I chose a sandwich with delicious toasted/buttered whole wheat bread, savory roasted Turkey, apple butter, a handful of arugula and Ooey gooey melty brie cheese. It was so good! The ambience is definitely that of an old diner, it's very cool! The colors. The materials. The size. The waitress was very nice as were all of the customers we met. The waitress was very helpful and sweet. I of course, immediately added them on Instagram. I can't wait to be a Gardiner local, and visit often! Looks like they have a stellar Christmas Eve bunch every year!

Loved this place! Had blueberry waffles and homemade corned beef hash and it was all yummy. The staff was friendly and kept the great coffee coming. And you can't beat eating in an old train/trolley car!

Driving through the cute little town of Gardiner, Maine, situated next to a stream and placed on stilts so that it can reach the side walk is the time capsule known as the A1 diner! You must stop and eat! Prices are fair and the food is amazing. On a recent Sunday we stopped in for a late breakfast and we're not disappointed! Upon entering, we were faced with a counter with stools that looked right out of by-gone era. We sat down at the counter and ordered. I ordered the eggs Benedict that was served with mixed salad greens and home fries! I can't recall ever being served mixed salad greens with breakfast. What a treat! She had a mushroom omelet with toast and homefries that was thoroughly enjoyed. Both of our plates were heaped with delicious food that will definitely bring us back the next time we are in the area!

    Cute little place.

I was kind of excited to come in here for breakfast, but was really disappointed. The Service was outstanding, the ambience was pretty cool, but the breakfast was not good. I ordered my eggs over medium, but they came out burnt, the potatoes were dry and look like they've been sitting there for a while. I would not recommend A1dinnerfor breakfast.

So firstly I would recommend showing up early or to expect a wait especially on weekends. Also related to this their space is quite small it can be a little chaotic with finding a spot to sit. Despite the small space they have made sure it is very beautifully designed and amazing vibes overall. Makes sense why it is so popular honestly. We snagged some of their outdoor seats and enjoyed the nice weather with our breakfast. They have a good mix of sweet and savory and talking to some others in line they said you honestly can't go wrong with anything on the menu. They have a great amount of coffee drink options too and when you order a large they are not lying, it is huge. I finished mine during breakfast but my wife and mother got theirs in a to-go cup before we left and looked like a normal sized large still. Food wise I felt like I had to try their Blueberry French Toast and it did not disappoint, great take on the dish. Only real complaint I could say is I would prefer a little thinner slice of bread so it can soak a little better but no real complaints. My wife got the Librarian Omelette (minus mushrooms) and it was large and jam full, they did not skimp on ingredients. Her only real complaint was some bacon was thicker than she prefers but again minimal. If you are looking for a spot to grab some delicious breakfast and/or coffee in central Maine this should be near the top of your list. From the overall vibes to quality of drinks and food you will likely have a difficult finding a better spot.

I came here today for the first time in a few months because I've been in a rough financial spot, but I decided to spoil myself and order online since I was rushing to work. The order said it would take about 30 minutes, so I thought, "Okay, I have time." I got there about 20 minutes later and was shocked to see that my order was already done! I grabbed the bag and headed back to my car, gave the bagels to my partner, and we hopped onto the interstate. Unfortunately, the next exit was 10 miles south. My partner pulls the bagels out, and to our absolute surprise... THE BAGELS WEREN'T EVEN TOASTED. WHO IS ORDERING A BAGEL WITH CREAM CHEESE UNTOASTED?! So not only did I pay $20 for THREE bagels, but I paid for three bagels that were completely inedible to me. And because we were already on the interstate with no exit for 10 miles, there was nothing I could do about it. I'm honestly so disappointed because I used to love this place. I understand mistakes happen, but when you're spending $20 on three bagels, especially when you're already trying to be careful with money, you expect your order to at least be made correctly. Would not recommend after this experience and due to the change of atmosphere, I won't be back, and will be taking my bagel orders to Sunrise Bagel down the street.

Time for a little update!…read more It's been a hot minute since we've been back to visit -- four years, actually -- and the fact that this gem still exists says something! This time we brought the whole family for dinner. I'd recommend reservations on weekends since it was packed, but we got seated right away because we planned ahead. Our waitress was top-notch -- high energy, charming, attentive. I'd give her 6 stars if I could! She read our crew well and adapted to each individual at the table -- a skill that clearly came from experience, and it served her (and us) well. Everything we had was great: cocktails, appetizers, dinner -- not a bad thing on the table. But the standouts for me were the Buffalo Cauliflower and the Spicy Shrimp Shio Ramen. For drinks, the seasonal Crazy (whiskey, Amaro Montenegro, beet, cayenne, lemon, egg white) and the Veruca Salt (tequila, coconut, avocado, pineapple, lime) were both incredible. I loved them so much I'm making a special trip back to town during my stay just to have them again ;) Bravo, State Lunch! You've got a fan for life.
