It's reportedly been in business since 1954, and they serve traditional food that's easy to like. It's a small local business that has good service and really decent pricing. It's strictly a lunch place, so make it a midday meal destination. They do a number of traditional things such as freshly made hamburgers and seafood po-boys. I'm a fan of their BLTs. Their sides include fried okra! They also have potato salad, coleslaw, and baked beans. It's easy to make a tasty combo. Then there are salads and plates. Nothing too fancy or difficult, just simple satisfying fare. But, then there's the BBQ, it is in the name after all. They have really good BBQ. Lots of people get a sandwich combo. One gentleman I see there gets the same one every time, and they know his order. In addition to the sandwiches, there are BBQ plates. I think the two meat is a good choice as you don't have to choose just one. I think everyone needs to go to Jay's occasionally and have a nice lunch. I had the 3-meat plate, and for $19.99 I thought the portions were kinda small, to be honest. The sausage definitely wasn't house-made; it tasted like Hillshire Farm sausage to tell the truth. The pulled pork and brisket were OK. Strangely my brisket was moist and juicy but my wife's was dry. The sides were extremely disappointing - the potato salad and coleslaw were obviously Sysco or similar. The mac and cheese was pretty solid, beans were mediocre. Their sauce wasn't very good either, tasted like generic commercialized sauce. On a positive note, they did have Barq's Red Creme soda as a fountain option. Salt, Pepper, Oak (SPO) is one of the latest in the modern LA BBQ joints that does the best Texas BBQ a LA boy could hope for. Brisket - This is my primary reason for coming. It is always smoky, flavorful, and oh so briskety. If you have had real deal Texas BBQ, you know what real brisket is like. This is it. It is delicious. Everything else - Thats the thing with SPO. My friend got the sausage and brisket with Mac n cheese and rice. I though my turkey was cold, but I really liked the flavor. Also, the Mac n cheese was cold to me, and I didn't love the flavor. The best thing I had on my plate was the fries! They were so so good! I loved what my friend got...I should have gotten the sausage and brisket because that was perfection. The sizes of the meats were very large. I didn't love this restaurant set up. They don't serve beer and they don't have Diet Coke for the fountain drink. I would pick up to go next time!
