Jay's Bar-B-Q is another one of those Baton Rouge traditions that everyone should try out for themselves. It's reportedly been in business since 1954, and they serve traditional food that's easy to like. It's a small local business that has good service and really decent pricing. It's strictly a lunch place, so make it a midday meal destination. They do a number of traditional things such as freshly made hamburgers and seafood po-boys. I'm a fan of their BLTs. Their sides include fried okra! They also have potato salad, coleslaw, and baked beans. It's easy to make a tasty combo. Then there are salads and plates. Nothing too fancy or difficult, just simple satisfying fare. But, then there's the BBQ, it is in the name after all. They have really good BBQ. Lots of people get a sandwich combo. One gentleman I see there gets the same one every time, and they know his order. In addition to the sandwiches, there are BBQ plates. I think the two meat is a good choice as you don't have to choose just one. I think everyone needs to go to Jay's occasionally and have a nice lunch. I am not 100% sure how I feel about Jay's Bar-B-Q. I came here after seeing a video of Gordon McKernan talking about how he has been coming here since his childhood. The food was good. The sauce is amazing. I just felt like it was not worth it for the price. $46 dollars for 2 poboys, 2 fries, and 2 drinks. Apparently I have been missing out. Finally had a chance to stop in and try this long-standing Baton Rouge icon. Was not disappointed!! My go-to meal for trying a new BBQ place is ribs and brisket with coleslaw and potato salad. I didn't see a combo plate on the menu that included ribs, so I got a rib plate with my favorite sides. Came with sauce on the side. But let me tell you, you do NOT need that sauce. (And I didn't really care for the sauce - a bit spicy, a bit sweet, but some other odd flavor I didn't love - not bad, just not my favorite). The ribs are perfectly done - a good bite yet tender (not falling off the bone, but quite tender). Good smoke flavor, not overpowering. Among the best ribs I've ever had. The coleslaw is nicely chopped and perfectly dressed (not juicy, not dry). Potato salad is also perfect with tender potatoes and great seasoning (mild, with no pronounced flavors - just good stuff). Counter service is quick and friendly and the atmosphere is good (an obviously old place, been there a long time, and yet kept neat and clean). read more

Just ate lunch there. Had the BBQ beef poboy, a large fries, and a Mt. Dew. For the large fries because the regular amount of fries they give you is never enough to last while you eat your poboy. The lady that took my order acted like I was bothering her When my food came, the fries were undercooked and quickly turned limp. They gave me the bare minimum of BBQ sauce in the cup to finish my poboy with. When you order a Mt Dew as a drink, they don't have it on tap so they give you a bottle and an ice cup. You can't get a refill without buying another bottle. When I went to pay, they charged me almost $25 for one poboy, a large fries, and one bottle of Mt Dew. The poboy comes with a small fry, but they don't give you a credit for it. They just charged me for the poboy and $6.50 for a large, undercooked, soggy plate of fries. This is the most unprofessional restaurant in Baton Rouge. Usually they give you your fries well before you ever get your other food. So your fries sit on the table getting cold while you wait for the rest of your meal. Avoid this location like the plague. The one on Sherwood First is still amazing, run by people who actually care and who won't rip you off. This location on Government St just lost a decades long customer forever. They don't deserve my business. I wish other people from the Baton Rouge area would stop putting up with the sub par experiences you find at so many restaurants here. Better that places like this go out of business rather than being rewarded for their incompetence and thievery. All in all, there's so many better choices than Jay's on Government. Take your business elsewhere to a place more deserving. This place provides horrible value for what you receive in return for your hard earned money read more

They have the very best Hamburgers they are homemade fresh when you order them. I think that's why they are my favorite hamburger place in the Baton Rouge area. My husbands favorite is the ham Poboy. They cook the ham here then they it super thin and they press the sandwich(poboy). They make their own barbecue sauce here, it's sweet and tangy, they've been making this sauce for over 60 years and it's delicious. The fries are just your frozen variety but they cook them till nice and golden brown. They also have fresh grilled chicken breast sandwiches that they cook per order so nothing sitting under a heat lamp here. and a variety of poboy sandwiches, bbq plates, fried seafood and salads, they also have excellent smoked chicken wings but they are a off the menu item, you have to ask for them. I wouldn't call it traditional BBQ. Jays is more of a BBQ pivot and sandwich place. They have a unique tangy sauce that makes a simple pressed sandwich delicious. I've been eating at Jays since the 1980s. I always go for the BBQ ham poboy with cheese and some Mozz cheese sticks. Poboys are near and sauce only which is the way I like mine but I add cheese. You can request it dressed as well but you have to ask. It's family owned and friendly. It's a little pricey but I don't mind since so is everything else these days. I'm not a fan of the plate dinners since it's not traditional bbq but love the sandwiches read more

Well the grilled chicken and corn nuggets were very delicious and juicy. I like the BBQ sauce recipe. I do not like the beans, they kinda just taste like chili beans or something. So disappointed... It was our first time visiting Jay's. We walked in and went to the counter where there was no visible menu anywhere, but we knew we wanted bbq beef, so we asked for two bbq beef sandwiches and two drinks. The man simply said, "ok, sit down we'll bring it to you." So we sat down. When the food came out it was just basic bread with meat inside... that's all, no sides or extras. Just bread and meat... This restaurant is such a unique Baton Rouge staple and is really underrated on Yelp, one of the best restaurants in BR in my opinion and one-of-a-kind. Their sandwiches are second to none and the turkey sandwich dipped in BBQ sauce has been one of my favorite meals since I was in 5th grade. It's not often you can have lunch in a spot that's been a local favorite for decades. Multiple generational owners, truly kind & friendly service, quality product and convenient location. That's Jays. We accidentally found this place after hours and said to ourselves "hey we should make a point of having lunch there" so we did. And we were not disappointed. I had the smoked catfish poboy with slaw. My hubs had the BBQ plate, turkey with 2 sides. The catfish was delicious, perfect smoke taste, well dressed with pickles, mayo, lettuce and tomatoes - then pressed & toasted. Yum! The slaw was a little too rich with mayo (hence the lost star - I'm a slaw critic). The Hub's turkey was perfectly smoked, sliced deli thin, the sauce was tangy but not too sweet or spicy. I didn't try the beans, but he liked them. The fries were cold (hence the lost star - c'mon, fries should be HOT). The service is great. The prices are fair. We will certainly be back. I NEED to try more. And I feel good supporting a local small family business. Do it! Eat up. Jays is the place! read more

I ordered the chopped beef sandwich with macaroni. The sandwich was pressed/flattened which was kinda weird. The meat on the sandwich was sloppy joe-esque. The bbq sauce was ok. Jay's is THE BEST. I've been going here for years and still crave it every single week. If you say you don't like Jay's you either don't know what you're doing or don't know how to order. So lemme tell you...the order is: poboy + curly q's. My order is Barq's Root beer, roast beef poboy, and curly q's. If you don't like or don't eat roast beef, you can get basically any kind of meat-pulled pork, chopped beef, turkey, etc. The poboy comes with their homemade, best ever bbq sauce, but just a little bit so it's not drenched/soggy, and then a side cup for dipping. It's pressed to perfection. Curly q's come out hot and I always add a little salt which is right there on the table. So delicious. And my last tid bit of ordering advice - it is just politically incorrect if you add anything to the sandwich. You just can't. No mayo no lettuce no nothing. Let the sauce do the talking. Ordered 2 times in the last few days because we got coupons on 225 best eats. Both times the staff was very rude. The first time we ordered catfish, it was horrible - tasted like very old fish.
