A Very Pleasant Experience! Purchasing a car is on the top of my "Things I Hate to Do" list, but the engine in my granddaughter's car went belly-up and she needs a reliable car for transportation. A friend suggested I view the inventory of vehicles posted on the Hi-Lo Auto Sales website. The name means Hi quality Lo prices. I was impressed with the assortment of vehicles on display as well as most of the prices. I completed an on-line form to make an inquiry about one of the vehicles that caught my eye. Shortly after submitting the form, I received a phone call from Ms. Desia Hartwell. Desia works at the Hi-Lo Auto Sales located at 5616 Urbana Pike in Frederick Maryland. Desia was very pleasant and professional. I explained to Desia that I needed a reliable car for my granddaughter as well as the price range I was working within. Desia said she had a couple of vehicles that fit my criteria and emailed me the links to their pictures and descriptions/details. Lo and behold, Desia provided me with information on a late model, low mileage vehicle in almost new condition at very reasonable price! Hi Lo has been one of the absolute worst car buying experiences I have ever lived through. I felt that I would have some kind of "advantage" to buying here because I had a friend who was in sales who worked there at the time. How wrong my presumption ended up being. I went to the lot having already done research, talked to my internal contact about available cars and essentially came there knowing what I wanted. The sales person I ended up working with was Katie, a young and quite obviously green sales rep. She was basic, not overly friendly, even coming off a tad apathetic like she did not care whether I was content or having a positive experience. As I was about to get in my newly purchased vehicle to drive off, I was unable to start the car with the key fob given to me. With confusion, I went back inside to Craig the general manager and asked for some assistance in starting the car I just bought. Within moments it was concluded that one of the 2 key fobs that come with the car was dead or broken. It simply would not work. Craig assured me all was well- "call us and we will take care of that for you no problem!". I was sure to confirm that it would be at no cost to me- considering I bought the car with the supposition that the key fobs would be in working order. From that first week on, until I gave up contact about 3 months ago (a span of 6 months) I called at first weekly, then as time went on every few weeks, to try and "set an appointment up" with their service center to fix the faulty/broken fob they sold me. The first two or thee months, every call I made was deferred with a "okay great! We will call you back to confirm an appt with our technician Jeff!" and that confirmation call would never come. I would start the next call with "Hey , it's me again! I need Jeff to fix my Fob!" , and that would always be met with a confused, apathetic response of "wow, that's weird. We will do our best to fix that"- and cue the same looping cycle to restart. Once I received this dismissive comeback about 15 times, I finally said "okay, give me Jeff's number. I cannot be told to wait for you to make the appointment for me anymore" to which Hi Lo told me "Jeff is actually a 3rd party contractor! So unfortunately that's not how it happens, we gave your info to Jeff and now you must wait for him to reach out to you". So, after all that time, I finally figured out what was actually going on. Hi Lo didn't feel like it was their job to follow up on this matter- they simply kicked the can out of their yard and exclaimed "not our problem anymore! sorry!". It was then I could tell- Hi Lo was actively avoiding fixing the broken fob they sold me. Within the first month of owning the car, I also experienced a popped tired which was not to the fault of Hi Lo whatsoever, but that experience led me to needing to interact with their service center (TIRE PROS OF FREDERICK). When I went to pick the car up after the tire being changed (it could not be patched so I required a new tire) I was informed by Tire Pros that I would be charged the full cost of the repair, even though I had conversations with Craig the GM of HiLo who had assured me Hi Lo would cover the costs. When I got Craig on the phone , he immediately attempted to renege his initial offer, claiming that the repair ended up being far more costly than he anticipated (he thought he would be covering a $20 patch, not a "new tire"). I called him out in the moment, exasperated that I would be lied to in such a manner, to which Craig easily manipulated into "well, I am going to be the nice guy here and go ahead and pay for it, but that's just because I'm a nice guy! Remember, I don't HAVE to do ANYTHING for you! I am only doing it because I am a nice guy!" the fact that he responded in such an incredibly defensive and awkward manner should've been enough for me to see a Red Flag then and there. A few days later, a random look in my trunk made me realize something- When Tire Pros serviced my car to fix the tire pop, they TOOK THE SPARE OUT OF THE TRUNK AND USED IT AS THE REPLACEMENT. And so, I no longer had a "spare" anymore, and it dawned on me that Craig and Tire Pros completely manipulated me into thinking they were doing me a "favor" by not charging me for a "new tire", when in reality all they did was mount my spare for me. Wow. When I found this out, I called Craig to confront him on the very shady thing I had discovered. This was the first and last time I ever spoke to him on the phone- once I said my peace and shared my opinion that he was intentionally manipulating me due to my perceived ignorance- he absolutely blew up on me. I have NEVER been verbally accosted in such a manner by a business manager. He called me a "dumb bitch", hurled expletives- He even laughed "HA! Good luck trying to return the car back to us- AINT NEVER GONNA HAPPEN! You're screwed! Won't ever happen! Nice try!". To this day I can't believe I was treated like that. You've. Been. I worked with Jon (who was super pleasant and reassuring the entire time, so yay Jon!), he sold me a car THEY TOOK MY MONEY, I drove it off the lot and had it for like two weeks. Then, I get a call that I have to bring it back and I don't get to keep my car. So, I take it back and they still won't give me back my money. You can't keep the car and the down payment. I'm not out here just giving out free money. So, now I have to call my bank and issue a charge back. Just a nightmare. AVOID!! BEWARE!!!!!!!!! FRAUDULENT DEALER WHO GETS AWAY WITH IT!! TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!!! You will sign a contract with this dealer that has a binding artribution agreement. This means that if you purchase a vehicle from them, you cannot sue down the road even if you have found yourself in a vehicle that has been in numerous accidents although the dealer showed you a "clean" report with no accidents and advertised as so on the internet and window sticker (this is what happened to me in may 2019) You will have to mediate the siatuation-most likely with someone whom the dealer chooses and has affiliations with- at your cost. The dealer will not speak of this when signing the contract. You give up all your rights to buying a misrepresented vehicle when signing. After doing a ton of research and speaking with numerous attorneys, the MVA investigations unit, insurance, finance company and so on, I have come to the conclusion that if a dealership has this contract, then they are making unethical sales/deals on a regular basis and it doesnt matter what has been shown to you regarding the vehicles condition during your car search because they know they have this contract to cover their awful, disgusting deals afterall. OH!! and that means these unethical dealers dont care about their consumers no matter the circumstances (go figure) Take my situation for instance; 9 months pregnant with a 2 year old by my side while trading in my vehicle for another that I thought would be safer and more reliable for my children. Newer, low miles, CLEAN HISTORY, NO ACCIDENTS as advertised. Bought the vehicle for 16k only to find out 6 months later that it has actually been in 2 accidents and has frame damage...a BENT FRAME... extremely UNSAFE for my children. They sold me a lemon with outstanding recalls on the car. After 3 weeks of driving my car it was in the shop. They gave me the run around and finally told me to take it over to their shop tire pro. They "fixed" a sensor that of course my extended warranty didn't cover for it to only break down again 1 month later. Took it back to tire pro who told me it was the fuel pump and the timing chain. My mother in-law told me to take it to the chevy dealership and they found that it was my pistons, rods and the ring around my oil manifold. Luckily they found the outstanding recalls and it got fixed for free. My main problem with Hi-lo was the lack of compassion they had. I bought a Volkswagen CC Turbo in December 2017. Had a few issues with it (tire sensor, outside mirror handle now air conditioning). I had an appointment this morning at W. Patrick Street location. My air conditioning unit is not working. Being that I bought the car in December I had no use for the air conditioning. The last several days have been warm so I tried to turn it on. It blows HOT air. I took it in the shop and here is where the nightmare begins. 1. They told me i had to pay a $100.00 diagnostic fee (even under warranty). I have taken my vehicles to numerous mechanics and not once have I had to pay a diagnostic fee. Definately not trustworthy. 2. Then I went to the salesman who sold me my car and asked for relief from paying the diagnostic fee and he said he would talk to his manager. The service adminstrator told me that they would not get rid of the diagnostic fee but they would help with the repair cost of the air conditioning. UMMMMMMM I have a warranty, but wait the air conditioning is not covered under the 6 month / 6,000 mile warranty. SO, needless to say, I would NEVER recommend this Car Dealership or Service Department to anyone, as a matter of fact, I tell everyone not to go to HILO for anything. Sue read more

I received a scratch off card in the mail from Hi Lo. I scratched off only one pair and it indicated I had won an amount of cash. Five thousand dollars. I called to inquire, was told to come on in. There was absolutely nothing on the card indicative of this being conditional. The ** code next to the $5000 prize had no associated description on the document. Anyone could reasonably believe they had won $5000, especially after calling and being told, come on down and collect your prize. (I just moved to Maryland and haven't changed my license yet). So I went in today and the owner told me I could not test drive the car because I could drive it back to the state on my license. THIS PLACE IS CRUDDY!!!! AVOID...AVOID...AVOID!!! They say they have a 6mo/6,000 mile warranty which is a LIE!!! My son's father looked to buy a car for our son from these people, and it was all negotiated with the manager the day before for a cash deal. The next day all we had to do was bring the cash, but the Finance Manager (Mike Zapparolli) apparently didn't know about the deal and said he couldn't sale the car for that price and wanted us to pay an additional $400 for a headlight, which they had to change anyway to pass MD Inspection. They switch out the 6mo/6000 warranty and swapped it with a 30 day warranty, "AS IS". The car was running great, the mechanic said the car was in great condition, but after signing the papers and while waiting there they did something to the car, drove down the street and the check engine light came on and the car was driving sluggish. They sabotage the car and the car was returned back to them the same day. Mike didn't want to sell the car for the negotiated price because he wasn't involved in the deal. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!! Complete SCAM. Sold me an overpriced vehicle that had over $3,000 worth of frame repairs required. The check tire pressure was light and the engine was making an irregular sound. When I asked about the sound the engine made, the salesmen told me "oh they all make that sound." Turns out the sound was a $1500 transmission repair that needed to be done. HiLo showed brand new wheels and tires on the online photo, but in person the truck had scraped up stock wheels with used tires. Upon bringing the vehicle to a mechanic, it turns out the truck didn't even have tire pressure sensors in them! They were removed. I could go on and on about the dishonesty regarding their service. Went to look at a price for them to purchase my daughters car. We had a SMALL interest in a vehcile on their lot so we asked what the price would be if we traded her vehicle rather than sell it outright. Working with Desia, she began asking questions which sounded like a credit application process. When questioned, she said they need to pull a SOFT credit report to give us a cost. We stirctly told them we were NOT looking to finance with them and didn't want payment amounts, only a total cost needed for financing, APPROXIMATELY. She continued to assure us a soft credit pull was needed. Matt, the Sales Manager confirmed the story. So she gave consent for a soft credit pull. Lo and behold, a HARD pull was made on her report and reduced her score. When I called them, they refused to do anything about it because they had a signed application. The signed application was for a SOFT pull, we consistently told them we did NOT want to finance with them. SCAMMERS - beware of this company. They do not have the best interest of the consumer in mind - only sales. read more

Originally, I was impressed with the place. Took my son there to purchase his first car. Sales and Finance Department treated us well. About 2 and a half weeks later, less than 1000 miles, the problems started. Turns out it needs 1600.00 worth of work on the transmission (valve body), and then it was discovered that the cooling fan was broken, another 300.00. My son was on a tight budget so we didn't buy the 6 month warranty to keep the payments low. Would not expect this with the millage that was on the car. Probably the reason it was traded in. Car was driven normally, he is not hard on cars, nor does he manually run through the gears or drive in a mannor that would have caused this. Now he had to take out a second loan for the repairs. Dealership told us there was nothing they could/would do for us. After checking their reviews on several websites, this is not an unusual situation for them. Hopefully, if you are reading this before you buy from them, you will think twice. Cars look great on the lot. Salespeople seem great, But the owner could care less about you after all is done.
