I've passed by this place in Haleiwa a number of times whenever I'm up on the North Shore. [[HIGHLIGHT]]HI Pie is an adorable little bakery located in Haleiwa nestled alongside other unique shops, eateries and food trucks.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]They have seating for about 5-8 people inside but it seems they mainly do to-go stuff.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I heard from a friend the pies here were really good, so I had to try for myself since I was out here again! I went for the signature Chicken Pot Pie & boy was it a super delicious bite! The crust was flaky and rich but the filling was amazingly savory. The blend of potatoes, carrots, celery, and chicken in a well-seasoned slurry was perfect! The pie was so gooey and moist & not dry at all. Definitely worth a try. If you don't like pie, they have quiche, sandwiches, salads, desserts (poi banana bread was great), and drinks too-- so there is something for everyone. I gave the benefit of the doubt on pricing though. If I couldn't give 4.5 stars I would have but only because I don't know if a $13 mini pie fits within everyone's budget! But it was SO good though! Limited parking in the rear of the building.

The Eleanor Pineapple Cream Pie is so delicious, it's a must try. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Such a cute little indoor spot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I would come back to try the pot pie next time.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Love the open kitchen homestyle cafe.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Parking- there's parking behind. We came here because we went to the food truck so we parked there. We were waiting for our food so decided to explore. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Decor/ambiance- homestyle warm like feeling cafe. Love the decor and the seating[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. [[HIGHLIGHT]]My 9 year old didn't want to leave because it was comfortable and cool in here.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I loved the open kitchen style.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Food- we only ordered the pineapple cream cheese pie. I liked it. It was good. My daughter liked the taste but didn't like the pineapple shavings. I didn't mind it. She loved loved the crust. She wanted to eat that. I want to eat the quiche and try the coffee next time I come. This place is definitely worth trying.

There are so many cute and delicious options of food in Haleiwa now that it's hard to choose just a few places to stop by and try with a limited amount of time but this bakery should be on the list! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The inside of this little bakery is very cute and quaint. There's indoor and outdoor seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They offer a variety of caffeinated and non caffeinated drinks and pastries and desserts like carrot cupcakes, pies, cheesecake, banana bread, and more. We ordered the Manic Monkey with coconut milk and the Eleanor pie which has pineapple in it. Both items were soo good. The Manic Monkey's espresso was nice and strong (just the way I like it), the drink was mixed very well and it wasn't sweet so it went perfectly with my pie. The Eleanor pie's filling was well integrated with fresh pineapple that wasn't overly sweet. The crust was crumbly and the perfect match for the pie. We left knowing we are coming back!

Lots to like about hi pie bakery! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Its a small shop but very comfortable to relax in and enjoy coffee and desserts.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They do also have savory pies and food if you like. I had the manic monkey latte and eleanor pie. I turned out to be a really nice combo. The manic monkey is a nice and strong coffee and lower than usual sweetness level. Its also very creamy. The pie was unique and enjoyable. The cream is thick and custard textured with the pineapple mixed in. I was expecting it to be whipped cream on top but i actually prefer the way they made it. The pie crust was very crumbly and i liked that it was different. Together it worked together very well. The coffee wasnt too sweet where i felt like i was overwhelmed with all the sugar after the pie. Highly recommend this spot!

I decided to get a quick coffee before the beach on a Thursday morning. Saw this cute coffee shop around North Shore and decided to try it out. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was not busy at all when we went.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I got an iced Maple Butter Latte with oat milk. The coffee was good and had a slight maple flavor and was perfectly sweet. I like my coffees not too sweet and it was perfect. I hope to come back to try one of their pastries. I was admiring their pastry case, they looked so delicious. I'll be back next time I'm in the area!

The Eleanor Pineapple Cream Pie... oh my goodness, the way I scarfed down this slice must be studied. I devoured this so fast that I am still dreaming about how delicious it was. The cream wasn't too thick or rich. It was light and fluffy. Fresh pieces of pineapple in the cream too. The CRUST though! Wow, perfectly nutty and crumbling. Soooooo tasty. I highly recommend!

HI Pie Bakery + Cafe has been on my list to visit in Hawaii. I first saw them on Instagram when they were at their first location, but when I finally decided to go for a visit, they were in the process of relocating. I am happy to report that I was able to try their yummy pies for the first time. I tried the potato and dill pot pie, and it was to die for! Service was great. There was only one lovely lady who I assume is the owner/baker. Since it was not a busy time, I was able to order immediately at their walk-up counter, and my food was delivered to me at my table in 10 mins. The wait was worth it because it was given a hot (not too hot) pie, and the crust was perfection. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Located in Haleiwa, this place allows for a quick bite or a nice sit down with your family. There are three outside seating with tables and the inside area has a cozy vibe[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. I can't wait to go back!

Very tiny eating establishment in Haleiwa, HI Pie Bakery + Cafe is easily missed. We were waiting for lunch at one of the food trucks so I hiked back to get a piece of pie for dessert. I had the Eleanor which is described as a "pineapple cream pie." Typically cream pies are made with a custard base. The Eleanor's base felt like it had whipped cream folded into it, as it was very light and fluffy, with bits of pineapple mixed in. (I'm probably dating myself when I say it reminded me of a Jell-O no-bake pie.) The pie was light and airy, maybe a smidge too sweet, though probably not noticeable with a cup of coffee to accompany it. I prefer my graham cracker crust to be a little more dry, the bottom crust was a little too gooey for my liking. Overall, however, the Eleanor was a very nice piece of pie and I'd order it again.

Came in for something sweet because I always pass this place & haven't gone in here yet so I wanna say as soon as I entered I was greeted by two lovely lady's and they helped out & made me feel so welcomed I bought a slice a pie. Which was really good very light creamy and was recommended to me from the worker I would definitely recommend this place.

Went here after a morning at kaena. Really wanted to try their pot pie after having some really good homemade pot pies from Kauai. Hi pie chicken potpie is super savory, a little on the liquidy side, which sadly spilled into the container. Their strawberry matcha is okay for my first time ever ordering a drink like that. We were disappointed as the girl helping us, spoke extremely soft, didn't hear my husbands coffee order and was informed that the meat pie was not available for dine in. Each pie is an about $12... which is understandable. Their ham and cheese Sammy had this sweet honey mustard that my husband enjoyed so much, he didn't let me have another bite. The interior of this place is extremely cute and super cozy. If I'm back in Haleiwa with a lot of time on my hands I'd be willing to go back and try the coffee that was missed from our order.

Charming? Perhaps to the untraveled palate. To me, it sits politely above average respectable, but never daring, never decadent. This is not a first-class European bakery. Not even second class. What it is, however, is decent: a place where a slice of pie and a coffee will not offend you, though neither will they seduce you into returning. The crust; serviceable, but hardly the buttery poetry it should be. The apples inside? Honest enough, though lacking that alchemy that transforms fruit into sin. Coffee? Strong, quick, reliable, like a soldier who salutes and moves on. And yet, the service came with smiles, and swiftly too. In a world drowning in indifference, that alone is worth a small applause. 3 stars. Not a destination, but if you find yourself wandering Haleiwa with a hunger and no better refuge, yes, it will do.

Manic Monkey. Hot drink of espresso, maple butter, milk, whip and Poi Banana Bread garnish. ($7)

My first visit! Date: 1/17/25 Time: 9am What they got right: Cozy atmosphere, friendly service, and tasty food. Areas for improvement: order organization. We make allowances for staffing shortages so when drink orders are incorrect or food items forgotten we give them extra time before we mention it. These issues happened while we were there and it took an extra 10-20 minutes for our order to be completed. I ordered the classic chicken pot pie for dine in and they warmed it up for me. I really enjoy chicken pot pie so I have been looking for go-to place for this dish. The chicken was moist and the creamy filling was tasty. The overall size of the pie was perfect for 1. The crust was nice. The Manic Monkey drink was tasty. My hubby liked the cute name more than anything. Cold brew was good. Poi Banana Bread was moist and delicious. Overall, food was tasty. Value was average.

From the moment we interacted with the staff, the attitude was cold, dismissive, and unnecessarily rude. It wasn't just one bad interaction or someone having a bad day. The looks, the tone of voice, and the overall way we were treated made us feel completely unwelcome. My wife noticed it immediately after ordering, but I brushed it off because I didn't want to jump to conclusions. After I had to go back to ask about my watered-down matcha latte, I experienced the same treatment myself. That's when I understood exactly why she felt the way she did. Maybe that wasn't their intention, but as Asian customers, that's how we left feeling. You don't need to understand every word someone says to recognize disrespect. People can feel it through body language, facial expressions, and tone. No family should leave a business feeling this uncomfortable after simply ordering a couple of drinks. We drove out of our way to support this place and instead left disappointed, uncomfortable, and with no desire to ever come back.

Mind you I ordered their easiest burrito (potato, eggs and cheese) and a bagel. It took them 25 minutes to work the science behind defrosting a bagel I suppose. The person making it needed to look at the receipt 5 times to figure it out. Before she could get it together she had to change the TV channel. Third the food was basic. But the service is very efficient inside and move the line along nicely. It is dog friendly, the whole little plaza is. I ordered the "Hawaiian" and a different large size as well. Was very flavorful with more than enough Syrup, unlike a few other places i've been too. The flavors lived up to their name and were all so good, definitely recommend trying the Blue Vanilla flavor. Also very cheap as well. Definitely is worth the hype though!! The inside has a gift shop as well, and the location around is shady and has other cool things to look at before/after the shaved ice.

Matsumoto is one of those places I have somehow remained loyal to long after I stopped being…read moreconvinced by the thing it is famous for. I've been coming here for close to four decades. I've stood in the lines, fought the Haleiwa parking, dealt with the old days when the trash cans seemed to attract half the bee population of Oahu, tried practically every flavor and combination, added ice cream, azuki, mochi, whatever else they could bury under syrup and bought an embarrassing amount of merchandise along the way. Shirts for myself. Shirts for other people. Tank tops. Children's books. At some point you have to admit this is less a customer relationship and more a mild psychological condition. And yet every few years I have the same realization. The actual shave ice just isn't that great. The ice itself is relatively coarse. It doesn't have that impossibly fine, almost disappearing texture that makes great shave ice feel like something other than frozen water put through a machine. Once the syrup hits it, you are essentially eating flavored sugar water trapped inside a mound of ice. Add ice cream and toppings and it becomes more entertaining, certainly, but the foundation is still the foundation. The strange part is that none of this seems to matter. You are in Haleiwa. It is hot. You have probably been at the beach. There is a line wrapped around a place that has been part of the North Shore landscape forever, everyone around you is taking pictures, children are pointing at rainbow colored cups and suddenly your brain starts telling you this must be incredible. Place has a way of seasoning food before you even taste it. That is Matsumoto's real genius. The building itself still has charm. It looks like it belongs there. There is history in the place and I understand completely why families make it part of their trip year after year. Mine does too. My kids like it. People visiting us want to go. I will almost certainly find myself standing in that line again despite everything I am writing here, which probably tells you more about the power of tradition than any five star review ever could. Where the experience repeatedly loses me is the hospitality. For a place built on something as inherently joyful as shave ice, the service can feel astonishingly joyless. You are moved through quickly, which I understand given the crowds, but efficiency and warmth are not mutually exclusive. Too often it feels like you are another transaction standing between the person behind the counter and the end of their shift. Questions feel inconvenient. The gift shop can have the same energy. Fold the shirt, ring it up, next. I'm not asking anyone to perform some cartoon version of "aloha" for tourists. Nobody needs to sing, dance or pretend we are cousins. Just a little generosity would go a long way. People are spending real money here, often after waiting a long time, because they believe they are participating in something special. You should still feel welcome inside the thing you helped make famous. That is why Matsumoto is so difficult for me to rate. The shave ice alone? Maybe two or three stars. The setting, history and strange gravitational pull of the place? Easily four. The service has disappointed me enough times that I can no longer pretend it is an off day. So I land at three stars, with an asterisk roughly the size of Haleiwa. Matsumoto is iconic. It is nostalgic. It is woven into countless vacations and childhood memories, including some of mine. I just wish the experience today lived up to the affection people bring with them when they walk through the door. And yes, despite this entire review, I'll probably be back. That may be the most honest endorsement and criticism I can give it.
