Finally, a café on Oʻahu that takes its pastries and café food seriously! I really love what you're doing here, and the pastries are genuinely some of the best I've had. My favorites I always order are the vanilla cardamom bun, Don't Worry Brie Happy, banh mi, and Cardi B drink. I did want to share a couple of suggestions for the owner/manager because I'd love to see this place continue to improve. Lastly, please can you add some umbrellas above your wooden tables outside. It's way too hot, and the covered area is always full/loud. Would really love some umbrellas over the wooden tables. Coffee consistency: I've ordered the Cardi B around 20 times over the past four months. Less than half the time it's great, but more than half it has been disappointingly cold or poorly made. I understand that different baristas have different techniques, but the inconsistency is always noticeable. In my experience, about 15 out of 20 times the coffee drink has been cold because the milk is not being steamed and instead cold milk is being poured directly into the coffee. The amount of cardamom and sweetness/honey always varies too. Since the drink itself has such a great recipe, I'd really love to see more consistency in preparation--this could be improved through retraining baristas, reinforcing a gold standardized recipe, proper milk steaming technique, temperature guidelines, or additional barista training. Also, I've never had the same barista or cashier in all the times I visited. As a local regular, I do wish I could have a regular solid barista. Consider the best practice of scheduling people with consistent schedules weekly so people can develop loyalty and relationship with your cafe. Bagelweanies: These are SO delicious, but they are also way too salty. The large sea salt crystals on top look beautiful, but there is so much salt that it overwhelms the flavor and health nutrition. I always have to peel or scrap off the top bread to remove all the salt. The weenie itself is already salty enough, in my opinion. I'd strongly suggest reducing or even removing all the sea salt on top. It would make them more enjoyable and a more healthy. They will still taste great, look great, and you reduce the expense of sea salt! I'm sharing this because I genuinely love the food and want to see the café succeed. The pastries and food are clearly made with care, and with a little more consistency in the coffee and less salt on the bagelweanies, I think you'd have an even stronger experience. read more

Came here on a whim because I have never visited the old sugar mill area before in Waialua. Parking is plentiful but I had to trek around to find this bakery. It's such a cute, albeit cramped, space. Pastries and breads on display looked fabulous but I wasn't in the mood for carbs. Opted for a strawberry hibiscus lemonade. It was ok. The matcha drinks sounded interesting on the menu but I saw a couple customers carry theirs away and the matcha to milk/flavoring ratio was very very low. It didn't look promising. Mele Mele has been a favorite spot of mine to go to for a drink and read/study. It has a lovely exterior with plenty of seating and shade with a vibrant interior. I've also ordered breakfast from there a couple times and each time the breakfast was really tasty and filling. I am a bit surprised about the negative reviews here regarding service and quality as that hasn't been my experience. Every employee that I've interacted with has been really nice, and every drink I had was pretty good. Cute little café on the North Shore! Service was friendly and the ambiance was super cute and cozy. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and plenty of parking. They also sell little trinkets and gifts around the café, which was fun to browse while waiting for our drinks. Their drinks were pretty mid. We tried their specials -- the pistachio espresso latte and the pistachio matcha latte -- and both were kind of disappointing because you could barely taste the pistachio flavor. Their pastries are kind of hit or miss based on the times we've gone. We've had some really good ones before and some that weren't memorable. This time, we got the almond croissant, which I actually really liked. We also tried the bagel weenie, which is basically like a sausage wrapped in bagel bread/hot dog style. The flavor was good, but the bread was super tough and didn't taste very fresh. I'm not sure if that's just how it's supposed to be, but texture-wise it wasn't really for me. When you walk in, there's tons of baked goods and cute merchandise all over with small tables and chairs to sit inside. The women who took our order was so kind fo us and patient which was nice because it was my first time trying Mele Mele Bakery. We ordered the ice Matcha Latte with the pistachio edge and almond milk and a cinimom roll with no icing. Oh my goodness it was amazing! The matcha was so refreshing, the almond milk didn't water it down either and the pistachio edge was just so delicious! It all made for such a refreshing drink! I left this place with my family feeling disgusted and like we had been treated differently because we were Asian. From the moment we interacted with the staff, the attitude was cold, dismissive, and unnecessarily rude. It wasn't just one bad interaction or someone having a bad day. The looks, the tone of voice, and the overall way we were treated made us feel completely unwelcome. My wife noticed it immediately after ordering, but I brushed it off because I didn't want to jump to conclusions. After I had to go back to ask about my watered-down matcha latte, I experienced the same treatment myself. That's when I understood exactly why she felt the way she did. Maybe that wasn't their intention, but as Asian customers, that's how we left feeling. You don't need to understand every word someone says to recognize disrespect. Super cute coffee shop and bakery that's worth the drive out to Waialua. There's a small seating area inside and tons of seating right outside. This spot is pet- friendly and the last time I came in I saw that they have a little resident cat that they give shots of milk to. I've tried their matcha and coffee and really love the fun flavor combinations that they have. We came on a Saturday so they had the farmer's market nearby, so it's a great spot to grab a drink before browsing the farmer's market. First time visiting here and it's definitely a plus that all 3 places are walkable distances! Drive time is about a 40-50 minute drive with no freeway traffic. When you get on Goodale Avenue from Farmington Highway, you will reach an intersection where the opposite traffic stop is diagonally to your left and the road curves. Make a left there. Look for a small truck with signs and the entrance is the last one before the dirt road slants to the right. Mele Mele Bakery is further inside the Sugar Mill. Just keep driving down the bumpy dirt road, passing the Soap Factory and Gift Store, till you see another parking area on the right corner, towards the cylindrical structures. A small cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. Offering bread, breakfast items, cakes, pastries, coffee, matcha, and etc. Everything is baked in house and uses organic and majority locally sourced products. Matcha is organic and from Japan! We came just minutes before they closed, and in process of cleaning up, but the staff were very friendly and nice, and welcomed us. The Black Sesame Hojicha Latte was excellent! Wanted a treat after our horseback riding experience. I went on yelp and found this bakery! It is located behind the soap factory. In silos. Pretty cool set up with inside and outside lounge type seating. The staff were friendly. I ordered a strawberry matcha. It was good but I would have liked more strawberry. Also tried their ube cheesecake and their lilikoi tart. I wanted to try their cinnamon roll it looked delish a was popular but the girl said the cardamom bun was her fave so I opted for that. I wish I would have gotten the cinnamon roll. The cardamom bun was just ok. You can tell it was sitting out because it was hard. My sister has the Ube cheesecake and she really liked it! The lilikoi tart was ok, loved that it was topped with fresh lilikoi. I also got a sausage roll for my hubby. I saw a guy eating a bahmi sandwich outside he said it was great! Surprised to stumble upon such a cute and relaxing coffee shop in the old part of Waialua! If you wander toward the historic Waialua Sugar Mill, you'll find this hidden gem tucked right by the beige round water tank. My friends both ordered the gingerbread latte--adorable coffee art on top and a sweet (but not overly sweet) holiday flavor. I went with the Very Merry Berry Iced Matcha. Super pretty and Instagram-ready, but the flavor itself was a bit light for me, so I'll try something different next time. The baked goods were definitely a highlight. The lemon poppyseed was a little on the dry side, but still very flavorful. The vanilla dessert--can't remember the name--had a nice chew and was surprisingly delicious. But the winner for me was the jalapeño bagel with cream cheese: toasted, soft, creamy, and just overall very satisfying. My friend took me here and it was such a wonderful experience. I felt like I went on a vacation to another land! I had a cup of Americano with a splash of oatmilk and it was so good. I am usually very snobby about coffee, but this was excellent with a nice round flavor, not too bitter nor too fruity. I also ordered the Norwegian cinnamon roll. While the designs with flowers are stunning, the buttercream is super thick and pretty solid. We cut the coconut/lilikoi cake to be surprised by an oozing center of lilikoi custard. Like huge hole in the cake center filled with custard.. which makes cutting the cake hard to retain the custard flavor in each slice. I would've thought the lilikoi would've been layered on each cake layer. The cake itself was pretty dense and coconut flavor is light. Lilikoi custard is good, but just the whole "idea" of the custard center and dense cake threw me off. My wedding cake from a different baker was also dense. As someone who was born and raised in Waialua, I know what the town's vibe is all about--there's a certain local culture and energy that I feel this place misses. While I understand that businesses need to cater to tourists, I can't help but feel like Mele Mele is more focused on trends and attracting visitors, rather than providing something that truly resonates with locals. The location itself was tough to find, and it's very open to the elements. Hot is HOT and rainy is RAINY. However, it is situated in the historic Old Waialua Sugar Mill, which is an interesting and unique spot. My husband pointed out that Mele Mele is in the old water towers, and I think that's a cool way of keeping the town's history alive and relevant in today's world. Still, it feels a little disconnected from the main pulse of the community, and honestly, I can't see my large extended family (a staple in Waialua) making this a regular stop. The reason why I say locals won't stop here is because of the farmer's market. Locals frequent the nearby farmer's market regularly--it's a spot where tourists and residents alike go for fresh fruits and vegetables. But I don't see many locals grabbing their groceries and then heading over to Mele Mele for brunch. And that's where the disconnect is for me. The inside is small and crowded as can be assumed upon glancing at the building from the ever dusty parking lot. A smattering of non shaded benches and tables litter the area, slaves to the burning sun. My wife and I ordered a rosemary bagel and cream cheese for our kids, a couple coffee drinks (the pistachio latte and the Dirty Earl) as well as a breakfast banh mi and some mushroom thing. The drinks came out first and upon first glance they appeared to be exactly the same drink. My wife asked about the cold foam hers was supposed to have and was met with "oh yeah. Our machine is broken". No apology. No sympathy. Just excuses. My "pistachio" latte was essentially coffee flavored milk as it was honestly about 75% milk with zero pistachio flavor to be found. My kids enjoyed the bagel, but it's pretty hard to screw up a bagel. The banh mi was missing any sort of meat and when we checked it was supposed to come with bacon. We took it back and the workers couldn't remember if it was supposed to be chicken or bacon. They asked someone in the back and their response was "oh yeah, I forgot to add it". So they added 3 strips of the saddest, soggiest bacon I've ever seen in my life. Once again, no apologies. Only upside was my wife enjoyed the mushroom thing she got. But upon closer inspection we deemed it very easy to make at home. One of the workers told my friend she may enjoy the coffee at The Birds Nest in Haleiwa better. So we went there. And guess what? They said they suppy Mele Mele with their baked goods. So Mele Mele isn't really a bakery after all? Just a trash coffee spot with sub par food and employees that don't know how to prepare their own food nor understand how to apologize or even preemptively start with "oh sorry, our cold foam machine is broken so none of the coffees will have them today." My friend and I came in on July 25th to try the matcha and pastries. My friend had actually been here once before and their drink wasn't made right that time either, but we figured we would give them the benefit of the doubt and try it again. Unfortunately, this visit was even worse and deeply uncomfortable from start to finish. There was immediate tension when we walked in--we are Asian, and the entire staff and majority crowd were white, which shouldn't matter, but the treatment we received made it clear we weren't the target demographic. We ordered three matchas (two with whole milk, one with oat) and a few pastries. The woman taking our order was visibly confused and gave us attitude, forcing us to repeat ourselves twice. Things got worse at the pickup counter. We watched them pour two oat milks instead of one. We approached them kindly to correct it, and the order-taker just looked at us with sheer annoyance. They apologized, but when we watched them remake it, she poured oat milk again. When we politely brought it up a second time, the attitude escalated. All three workers upfront stared at each other in annoyance, and the girl making the drinks made passive-aggressive remarks about "getting it right this time" as if the mistake was ours. To top it off, one of the workers asked us where we were visiting from. We are locals--born and raised here on the islands. It felt incredibly alienating to be treated like tourists and made to feel out of place in our own home. The irony of being microaggressed over matcha--an Asian drink--at a shop that clearly doesn't welcome the local community isn't lost on us. Giving them a second chance was a mistake. Zero stars for the service and the vibe. To be fair the desserts were okay.. but we definitely won't be back. read more

Food: I got the miso mushroom toast without goat cheese and it was ok 3/5. Sautéd mushrooms on focaccia with honey nothing super special. We also got some pastries. The hotdog bun was pretty good! The sausage was flavorful but the bread itself was hard and didnt seem like it rose properly. Matcha latte was 95% milk. The lilikoi matcha cream soda just tasted like sparkling water. Kinda expensive for what you get. Mostly vibes. Service/ambiance: We came in around noon on grand opening day (which we weren't aware of) and the line was out the door! It's understandable that they were probably rushing the food and drinks. The workers were nice and helpful. The inside is super cute and there's seats inside and out in the back. I won't lie when I say Mele Mele Bakery is a very cute/aesthetic very much instagramable spot for a cafe with a friendly staff and a prompt service. However, I also cannot lie that our matcha was mediocre. Unfortunately, our matcha tasted sour and our mochi waffle did not deliver, very bland and all the fruit toppings were so sour. My palate was singing... Mele Mele was on my list for quite some time for one it had Matcha yes and much more...not just a simple latte :) Whoever pinned it on Yelp was wrong in a huge way though we found it as it shares the same location as the Old Waialua Sugar Mill that I've frequent on the regular in the past so I do know it quite well but didn't know that just to the right of the Mill in an old silo is simply brilliant and I absolutely loved it. This bakery bakes up some yummy treats that had me spinning with indecisiveness but have decided on "Sophia's Pineapple Sausage Bagel Weenie" woah yup and it was just that as a huge sausage that had bagel dough twisted around it was a simple yet comforting bite and pairing it wasn't easy as about eight different matcha drinks I decided with the classic "Strawberry Matcha" which was a stunning sip that wasn't too sweet and crazy creamy so that I could actually taste the matcha that didn't get lost in the drink. I loved the vibe in this cute and cozy shop with a large comfy sofa and coffee table a papasan chair though I chose a nice table for two that was right beside a window that borough in the coolest breeze was a nice and relaxing much needed break from adulting. The staff is nice and friendly who made it all with fast and efficient and with lots of parking on an unpaved dirt road made it an interesting journey but loved this new spot off the beaten path. I saw tiktoks about Mele Mele Bakery and wanted to give it a try. It's located in the Waialua Sugar Mill, and there's lots of parking on open dirt. We came here on a Saturday, so they were serving a brunch hot food menu, as well as their pastries and drinks. From their hot food menu, we ordered a banh mi and mushroom toast. The banh mi was loaded with chicken and pickled carrots and radish. The chicken and bread were super dry. We also got the mushroom toast with goat cheese. This was loaded with mushroom, but the bread was a little soggy. We also got a hot dog pastry from the case. The hot dog was super tough and the bread was hard. I think it might've been sitting out. For drinks, we ordered a matcha lemonade and black sesame latte. Both of these were good. There's not much seating inside, but there are more tables outside. The outside tables can get really hot though. The area in which it's located is so beautiful, and there's other shops around the area to check out. Definitely stop at the bookstore on the upper level if you make the drive out there. I wouldn't recommend getting the food or pastries from here though. read more

Location of the bakery is at a random spot but it looks somewhat cool. Lots of recycled art around the area (I think there's a studio that makes it). The matcha drinks were ok but the staff were very friendly. read more

A cute little bakery bringing life back to the old Waialua Sugar Mill. My mom and I went on a Tuesday morning around 8am and they were a little busy, I would say take a visit if you're not pressed for time. If you're in the hustle and on the move, come back another time when you can enjoy everything the cafe has to offer. They have an array of baked goodies right at the counter, and a fun drink menu. We ordered a the strawberry matcha and hojicha latte. Unfortunately they were out of strawberry at the time, so we had to settle for vanilla, no big deal just a little bummed. We ordered the sausage bun, which was such a treat! The sausage itself tasted like the pineapple sausage you can buy in the local markets in Hawaiʻi but don't quote me on that. We also got a cinnamon berry cream bun which was delicious as well. Overall we had good experience! read more
