Having a night right besides a lighthouse and an ocean shores is an amazing experience. We've seen harbor seals, sea palms, brown pelicans. Looks like during summer we would also be abele see humpback and grey whales. Everything in one place! Stuff is friendly and can give a recommendations for local places and really sweet people. I would love to come back here once lighthouse restoration is completed. P.S. they also have hot tube so bring swim suit. They can provide towels. Lowered from 5 to 4 stars since I didn't have great sleep. It was hard to fall asleep, probably because we used to slightly wider beds. I know it's completely expected for a hostel. I couldn't adjust to a pillows: with a pillow it's too high for me. Without - too low :(

Love this place! I see this as a mini retreat place. The hostel is charming and clean. I enjoyed the lighthouse museum which was very interesting. All of it was special. Peaceful, and right on top of the ocean. It was lovely to sit out on the little patio with drinks in the evening, and then to practice yoga in the morning. I found lots of quiet spots. We did go at a quiet time when the weather wasn't so nice. It was cool grey and overcast but it was still very beautiful as far as we were concerned. We will be back for sure. We wanted to come back for Thanksgiving but they were fully booked!

After too many years of driving by and remarking that we should at least stop and walk around, we booked a weekend for my wife's birthday. Well, the weather didn't cooperate at all, cold and foggy. But it was that way at home as well up and down the coast. As seasoned travelers, we brought clothing that would allow us to enjoy the facility, And scenery. Which we did. The accommodations were just fine. We were given clean sheets when we checked, you can rent towels but we brought our own, and proceeded to our room. A small room with an interesting bunk bed. The lower bed can accommodate 2 adults and the upper bunk is adult sized. The was an alcove closet to hang our clothes and a complete, albeit smallish, bathroom down the hallway. This 3 private room cottage also boasts a large kitchen, with some utensils and such, a dining table and a large living room. We had cell service but they also provide very adequate WIFI. Here are a few pix of our stay.

I stopped here a few months ago on my way to do some sightseeing with friends. This place also has a hostel where you can stay right up close and personal to the lighthouse and the beach. They also have a souvenir shop and book store. There are cliffs everywhere and you can look out and see the ocean for miles. The views are breathtaking. There's plenty of free parking if you get there early. If you're handicapped it would be more difficult to get around. There are picnic tables and benches to sit have lunch and take in these spectacular views. You can walk up and around the lighthouse or take a stroll on the beach. It can get pretty windy here even in May so I would suggest bringing a jacket. On warmer days, you can bring a blanket and have a picnic lunch on the beach or at one of the picnic tables. It's a great place to stop and take some pictures. Pigeon Point Light Station or Pigeon Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse built in 1871 to guide ships on the Pacific coast of California. It's the tallest lighthouse on the West Coast. It's 115 feet tall and is still used by the Coast Guard. The lantern room of the double-walled tower supports a huge four-ton lens. It's the largest first- order Fresnel lens and has 1,008 glass elements mounted in a brass framework. It was capable of producing 500,000 candle power illumination. It was first lit with lard oil ( pig oil) then replaced with mineral oil (kerosene lamp) in 1888. This lens system was perfected by Augustin Fresnel, pronounced fra-NELL, in 1822. It was manufactured in France. The lens focuses light from a flame or bulb into 24 separate beams that radiate outward, up to 24 miles on a clear night. It has a powerful clockwork mechanism which slowly rotates the lens. The mariners had to wind it by hand and climb up a long winding spiraling staircase. The ships were able to see a white flash every 10 seconds to help guide them. It got its name from a Clipper ship that wrecked in 1853 called the Carrier Pigeon thus the name. Previously, the point had been known as Punta de las Ballenas (Point of the Whales), as a whaling station was located nearby. When I saw this gigantic lens it blew me away. It no longer lights up, but it's incredible to see. I didn't realize how big it was, and how many lenses it took to create it. It was really nice having a narrator to explain everything about this historic lighthouse at the visitors center. I learned so much, just talking with him. It's definitely worth stopping and walking on the beach or taking time to experience the views all around. You can bring your dog on the beach , but not in the lighthouse.

A nice stop off as you make your way down to Big Sur. The lighthouse was closed but we were at least able to take some pics of the outside and the ship wreckage!

Driving down Highway 1 along the coast came to Hi-Pigeon Point Lighthouse. This is a great spot to learn some history and enjoy the surrounding view. They rooms you purchased and you can stay for the tours. Lots of history to be learned.

I've stayed in many hostels, so spartan furniture and shared bathrooms were as expected -- but everything was clean and comfortable. For anyone like a coworker of mine for whom a Days Inn would be roughing it and thought hostels went extinct decades ago, make sure you can embrace the right mindset. The location is ridiculous. We saw well over a dozen whales. The lighthouse itself has been closed to access since 2001, but you're staying in the adjacent former keepers' quarters. Note that as it's also a state historic site, it gets busy with Highway 1 travelers during the day. The site includes a small beach, although there are nicer beaches within a couple miles in either direction on Highway 1. Private rooms, meant for families but suitable for any small groups traveling together, seem to book far in advance on weekends. Come prepared to self-cater; pick up groceries by Santa Cruz or Half Moon Bay. Otherwise, there's a brewpub nearby, but outside summer, they're closed a couple days of the week and also close early in the evening.

Driving up the coast to Santa Cruz is such a lovely drive. Drove by this light house many times and decided to swing by for a walk. As I approached the light house from HWY 1, there is parking to the right on the dirt road. There's also a few parking spaces in front of the lighthouse within the gates. There are two public toilets near the entrance, should you need them. The lighthouse is beautiful but is fenced off and you cannot go inside. However, behind the lighthouse is a small museum and gift shop, which opens between 9 am - 4 pm, There is also a small beach to the left of the lighthouse entrance. You will see a path which leads to a circle shaped seating area. Continue walking toward the sea and you will see steps leading down to the beach. I noticed a few people fishing and some were climbing on the rocks to the right. The tides were coming in, so do this at your own risk. It was such a windy but picturesque day along the coast. Made sweeter with a visit to a lighthouse area. Definitely worth a side trip, if you happen to be driving along the coast and need to stretch your legs. The walk around the lighthouse is pleasant and enjoyable with the views. Bring a picnic or snack, as there aren't any eateries around there.

The variety of beaches along the coast are great and these are photos from Henry Bean Dog Beach and a scene from Half-moon Beach. The beaches that don't restrict dogs are this one as well as Miramar. The Pigeon Point Hostel is very quiet and had a historical small museum that I was able to go to before the pandemic, and hope it reopened. It has a huge structure of the lights of the lighthouse and a spiral staircase from the old structure in a museum and a giftstore.

    Lovely sunset!

This review is based on the info gathered, as we were not guests. Entranced by the beauty of the lighthouse from Highway 1, we drove over to investigate the beach and take pictures. We then stopped in to inquire about the property and discovered it's a hostel. They have a hot tub right outside with a view of the ocean - hot damn. It's right on the cliff! You can reserve it for a couple people at a time. WOW. There are 4 different houses, and each house sleeps 15. There's a living room and kitchen in each. I think it would be awesome to rent a whole house and bring a group of friends to stay here. They have firepits and a common area where they show movies every night. Seals come in and hang out. The property is surrounded by ocean on 3 sides. The beach is wonderful. I'm too much of a chicken to stay at a hostel, but this place is so inviting and beautiful and kind staff that I'm greatly intrigued. I would recommend that you give this a try!

Hey it is free! Free to park. Free to roam. Lighthouse tour is not open to the public due to safety conditions. Restrooms? Forget about it. The stench can be detected miles away. Better plug both nostrils very deep. You have been warned. Parking wasn't too bad. There's street parking if you don't have any luck.

I (VERY NICELY) told her that we were under the impression that there was an easement to the beach (which is true), she then goes to say that we didn't sign the digital waiver at the door, ok fair enough, I immediately tell her that we will go right away back up to the gate and sign the waiver. She then proceeds to yell at us about how we are not allowed to do professional photoshoots, okay lady I get that maybe I do look like a model (especially compared to her) but some friends with a camera isn't a professional photoshoot. I once again, nicely explain to her that I just proposed and we're just trying to get a few pics of the location and we will go sign the waiver right away. She proceeds once again to repeat herself about the waivers which I don't understand because I already said we would go sign it right away and her talking is actually what is preventing from us from going to sign the waivers. She then ironically says "it's unfortunate that this is what you will remember from your engagement day" like what?! LADY if you know you're ruining our day why are you doing this? but fear not it did not ruin our day because I will not let some old hag ruin my day so I once again tell her we will go sign the waivers, she then has the balls to tell me that "this is a non-profit, there is a donation box at the door" ok PAUSE I would be MORE than happy to donate $50, even $100 to your location but not after the way you just treated us. We end up walking back up to the gate to sign the waivers and run into another couple making their way down the hill. I jokingly told them to make sure they signed the waiver or they would get yelled at to which they told me they didn't and proceeded down the hill. We ended up running into them at the parking lot again and they told us that they lady gave them no trouble even though they didn't sign the waiver. I jokingly said to them it's probably because of race (we are asian, they were Caucasian) to which they replied that they really may have been the case because they had no trouble at all. It's unfortunate such a beautiful location is run by such an old grumpy lady. I 100% own it that we should have signed the waiver upon entry but if rules exist they should apply to everyone regardless or age/race/gender/etc.. and on top of that once I already told her we would go sign the waivers she could have easily sent us about our way but I can't imagine why she felt the need to continuously lecture and yell at us.

Location-wise, it's fantastic--right downtown, just steps from bars, restaurants, and the theater. It's perfect if you want to go out, have some fun, and not deal with driving afterward. Check-in was done via keypad, and while it took a minute to figure out, Kasa sent super helpful messages every step of the way. I really liked the self check-in concept, and the communication made it feel smooth and supported. There was a staff member on site that night, which was a nice touch--even though we didn't see them, it was comforting to know they were around. Our room was clean and stocked with thoughtful amenities: snacks, water bottles, a welcome note, a coffee maker, fridge, and even a sound machine and earplugs (which came in handy--being right above the front entrance, we could hear people outside on the sidewalk). Also worth noting: the curtains weren't blackout, so the room wasn't super dark in the morning. Light sleepers might want to check if any rooms have darker shades. The bed was firm, not our usual preference, but fine for a short stay. Housekeeping did a fantastic job--everything felt fresh and spotless. I can't really do stairs right now and nowhere on their website is it obvious that they don't have an elevator. I don't need an accessible room but you assume ADA compliance in 2026 in a major tech city. Okay whatever. I get to the room it's boiling hot. The air conditioning is blowing hot air even though it set at 67. I figure it must not be on or maybe I wasn't in the room and it's one of those motion sensing types. So I said it a little bit lower and wait. I'm tired so I end up going to sleep and I sweat all night and don't sleep well. It didn't help that the so-called blackout blinds didn't block a damn thing and my room was light enough to read by. Oh yeah, icing on the temperature, the fan in the room wouldn't even turn on. It made noise but wouldn't spin. The mattress being apparently made of solid wood was also less than desirable. I stay in hotels for a living. 200 hotels last year. This was the worst bed of all of them. I wake up the next morning and the shower is barely a trickle. I get dressed and I pack my things because I'm not going to stay for another night. I reach out to customer service in 2 hours later they hadn't responded. Down in the lobby I run into a woman who said she was the property manager and that they were working on the air conditioning and that it was PG&e's fault. The.air conditioning has power. It had an error fault that if you looked it up it said it was the filter being blocked which means they probably never clean it. But she's promised me it be fixed by that night so please don't check out early, give us a chance to make it right. So I said okay. And I went about my day. I came home in the evening and the room was again boiling and the air conditioning was still not working. They had put a new fan in the room and it was running but it wasn't enough to get the room cool at all. So I let them know I was checking out and I was going to go stay at another hotel They refunded me less than a third of the fee. The reason? Because I checked out so late. The only reason I didn't check out early in the morning was because they told me to stay and promised to make it acceptable. So they manipulated me into staying an extra 10 hours so that they can reduce how much they refunded me by because they never had any intention of fixing that air conditioning. It was all a lie and a manipulation to get a little bit extra money. I can handle things breaking or things not being ideal. I will not handle corporations that are dishonest and manipulative. They knew I planned on leaving with plenty of time for them to give me a refund for the entire night. But they were dishonest. You don't want to stay at a hotel where the management is dishonest. Stay somewhere else.
