I usually don't stay at hostels. However, the former mansion looked interesting, so I thought I would try it out. I booked a single twin for one night. It was a small room but worked for me. It was clean and the bed was comfy. I was fortunate in that the temperature that night was 57 degrees and 88 degrees during the day. I was told that in previous days, the temperature during the day reached 107! The room did have a little fan. The shared bathroom and showers were clean. I met a few foreign visitors in the kitchen. One young female was working on her computer in one of the common rooms. Other than seeing 2-3 other guests, I pretty much had the whole place to myself. It was really neat wandering around to look at all the stuff in the place. At 10 pm., everything gets quiet. Even the music from the nearby festival went quiet. I walked about 8 minutes to a Thai restaurant, called Hiso, which had great food. There are homeless people in the vicinity. I felt safe as the walk took me past some really expensive homes. Lots of people were out walking their dogs. Just be aware of your surroundings. I decided to walk across the street from a spot where some homeless person had set up a tent. I also watched out for people on scooters and bicycles. Parking is available within a gated enclosure by the alley and next to the hostel. That greatly gave me some peace of mind. The young man at the front desk was helpful and professional. Two items of note: 1) you need to remove the bedsheets and pillow cases and deposit them into the baskets by the front desk. Not a big deal to do. 2) you do need to climb stairs to the 2nd and 3rd floors. Not a hassle unless you are older and/or have mobility issues. Or if you have heavy luggage to haul up. Overall, it was a good experience. I would definitely come stay here again. I'm glad I tried this hostel out. Oh, when I read up on the building, I found out that it was a funeral home at one time. I didn't get any creepy vibes. I zonked out and had a good night's rest. read more

One of those hostels that I am very disappointed that I didn't get to experience more of. I came around 8pm on a Sunday when I had a 6am flight the next day. I tucked in as quickly as I could because I had to get up at 330am. Would have loved to have cooked in that kitchen, hung out in the common area, and maybe met some people. Not sure how or when I'll be back in Sacto, but if I am, this place is on the top of my list. read more

This hostel is a pretty cool hostel inside a historic Victorian mansion. I love the idea and it looks pretty good in the lobby. Besides that, everything was just okay and I didn't like the following: - ring the bell every time you need to enter the building - I stayed in November. My private room was pretty cold. The heater didn't seem to work. When I talked to the front desk, they just said it has central heating so it should work. If they just go to my room, they would have felt that my room was cold while the corridor was warm like night and day so it didn't work. They didn't do anything. - the bathroom was really cold. The toilet and the shower were clogged too. - the game room was nice but some stuff were broken. They didn't seem to care to replace it when we asked about it. - the bed sunk in the middle too read more

My experience was not what I expected when I browse thru the photos on Yelp. What I didn't like about this property: 1) You have to ring the bell at the door so the front desk person can come and open the door for you to get inside. So if you are out enjoying the nightlife in downtown Sacto and come back after midnight or so, you have to call their number so someone can open the door for you. Sometimes it might takes a few mins depends on who's working. Or even when you parked at their private lot and wanted to grab something, you have to ring the bell again when you want to go back inside!!! I found this kind of inconvenience, they should have just use a card activated entry lock so we could come in and out without bothering the front desk person. 2) They don't have those game room anymore that I saw on Yelp!!! Was looking forward to play some pool, but nope!! 3) Their shower on the second floor was weak, no hot water, it was barely warm!!! Plus they DONT even provide shower gel/conditioner/shampoo!!!! 4) The huge room right next to the lobby on the right side was dark, they needed to open up the curtains or something to bring in some light during the day, but it would be perfect for Halloween night!!!! 5) There were not any chairs/lounges/hammocks infront of the building to hang out like those in the pictures. Nothing!! 6) You CANT access to their private parking lot thru the doors in the kitchen!! You have to exit/come back thru the front door!! 7) They don't have any TV there so your best bet is bring your own iPad and watch your Netflix using their free WiFi. What I LIKE about this property. 1) This building is HUGE!!! 3 floors. Looks like a Haunted Mansion inside though. Ha haa 2) They have HUGE kitchen!!! you can cook anything and everything there!! They provide all the cooking materials like pots/pans/utensils/bowl/plates, etc... 3) They have pretty simple morning breakfast like bagel, coffee, oatmeal, granola bars. They REALLY should invest those waffle maker!!!!!!! 4) They do offer private parking spot at their gated parking lot for $8 a day if you happen to have a car. Better than parking on the street I guess. I would stay at this location again ONLY if they could change the front entry situation, I really hate to have someone open the door for me EVERYTIME I have to go back inside. Don't call it a hostel it's a hotel for 78$ a night thanks They've got the fixed rate for a dormitory shared bedroom the same price as a private room which is 78$ I'm talkin about back in my day hostels were a cheap break for tourists and travelers looking for camaraderie and a place to crash. back in my day hostel dormitory rate was in the teens. I'm talkin about 17$ overnight in Chicago and San Diego staying with HI intl. Desk attendant admits it's a homeless issue she doesn't want them camping in the rooms. So limit the time travelers can stay in the hostel - don't just profile people and jack up the rate for a dorm bed and ruin the hostel experience and new experiences possible in general. read more

I've never stayed at this hostel but I've gotten the full tour. I walked by here for years and it never made a blip on my radar, so it was such a treat to discover the history, beauty and services this building encapsulates. Walking in, you can't help but be impressed by the old Victorian architecture, the grand rooms, the communal kitchen and the many events and local happenings they advertise and support. The rooms are all unique, clean and cozy. There's also a spacious yard that would make the perfect gathering spot for a private party. I know they've even hosted a couple weddings here in the past. There is a downstairs game room and mini library as well. Apparently this place once belonged to one incredibly rich family and then was for a time a mortuary. Go figure. The modern version is warm, welcoming and filled with travelers from all corners of the globe. I don't have a reason to stay here, but maybe some lucky traveler does! I know I'll be back to investigate what other types of events can take place here. read more

I had a great (private room) stay here with my son this weekend, and am surprised by Mitch C.'s uninformed and somewhat naive review from just 18 days ago. I think it's worth taking a few minutes to address some of his comments here. Let's talk about why a staff member has to let you in through the front door, even at night. The surrounding neighborhood - downtown Sacramento - has a significant and very visible population of people living on the sidewalks. This is not a reason to avoid the hostel whatsoever, but I think the average person would understand why the hostel's staff needs to ensure that non-guests do not enter the building by verifying guests face-to-face before providing access. We were asked to hold up our key envelope after ringing the doorbell so that the on-duty staff member CAN SEE THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR WINDOW that we were guests. As far as I remember, none of the other exterior doors had windows. Having an electronic key system that doesn't require staff intervention for entry would open the door (no pun intended) to risks from non-guests "tailgating" into the building as the door is closing. Hopefully this explains why the front door is the only entrance. Why else is an electronic key system the wrong option? When we checked in, the front desk staff walked us through the house rules, which included that ONLY GUESTS are allowed in the building. If you want to meet up with your non-guest friends at the property, they ask that you use the outdoor seating area in the side yard. (Mitch, this is why you did not see an outdoor seating area in the front yard - it's in the side yard.) Having the staff provide access through the front door at all hours seems like a great safeguard to prevent guests from bringing their extra buddies from the bar back into the hostel to party. Let's address Mitch's other grievances. You can exit into the parking lot from other exterior doors. I learned this by asking the staff. If you have lots of baggage to bring in from the parking lot, you can ask the staff to monitor one of the more convenient doors while you're unloading so you don't have to go around to the front door. This requires that you actually talk to the staff and understand the situation. Bottom line: If you recognize the context of the hostel's surrounding environment, you'll appreciate the management's emphasis on security. Moving on, the game room is still there. The first question we asked when checking in was, "Where's the game room?" It's in the basement. They have Pac-Man, Street Fighter II, foosball, ping pong, darts, and a pool table. Unfortunately, the hockey game seemed broken. The playlist on the speaker system down there made me feel like I was at a swanky holiday party. If you can't find an advertised amenity, ask the staff. I think you might be noticing a trend in this review, right? Finally, as for not providing toiletries like shampoo... it's a hostel, not a hotel. This is a fine place to stay; the staff was friendly and helpful. It was a really unique lodging option, and I'm glad we visited. read more

When I travel, my preference is to book a hotel over a hostel. My first hostel experience was at a dumpy Las Vegas hostel when I was 20 (not old enough to book a casino hotel room), which put me off staying at a hostel when I could. So what made me decide to book this hostel over a hotel room? It was for several reasons including the convenient location, room price and chance to stay in a Victorian house. And based off the mixed reviews of my most likely hotel options, I thought staying at this hostel seemed like the best option. Going back to the location, this is probably the biggest selling point. The hostel is located right across the street from Sacramento City Hall and a few blocks from the California State Capitol. There is access to several light rail lines and Amtrak within short walking proximity. Even though it is downtown, I found the hostel to be relatively quiet on the weekends. Actually a bit eerily so. The hostel is located in a Victorian house known as the Llewellyn Williams Mansion built in 1885. There are four levels to the house, basement and three above ground. As you enter the hostel, directly to your left is an elegant dining room which is where the free continental breakfast each morning is served. To your right is a couple public areas for lounging. In the back part of the ground floor is where the kitchen is. Since this hostel, you are able to use it if you decide to eat in or cook. There is also a fridge you can use to store groceries, though you need to put a label on them. The Victorian features of this house are evident in the whole hostel, but the second floor lounge area is one of the locations in which this architecture stands out. Speaking of lounging, the front porch is another place for this especially if it is a nice day. The hostel has several room options. They have dorm beds that are $30-$32.50 a night. They also have private rooms available (single/double/triple/family). Though most of the rooms don't have a private bathroom. You need to use the shared bathroom on each floor instead. Also note that there is a $3 daily membership fee tacked onto the rate if you are not a member of Hostelling International. Since I didn't need a lot of space, I booked a single room. I was given Room 31 which is named The Nugget for about $60 a night. The room was tiny, even smaller than a Japanese hotel room. It was the size of a closet with just enough room to fit a twin bed and some shelves. There was also a fan and small sitting stool. Though given the size of the room, the stool seemed like a waste of space. While there is no room TV, the hostel offers free Wi-Fi. I knew the room was going to be small and I was okay with that. I booked this hostel for the decor and location. Still, I found staying in this room to be quite uncomfortable. The bed was difficult to sleep in since it was small. But the room was also located next to the men's bathroom on the floor so I could hear the noise coming from it while laying on the other side of the wall. As for the hostel itself, I thought the staff was friendly and helpful. They held my bags for a few hours after checkout, allowing me to see a few more sights before flying out that evening. The hostel does have some rules in place like only eating/drinking in the dining room and washing your own dishes. While I would have preferred to have a drink of tea in my own room, I think the rules they have here are not unreasonable. I am not sure if I would stay here again, but it was nice to stay at this hostel once. It is many times better than the first hostel that I stayed at many years ago. As for if I would recommend this hostel, I would say that it depends. If you are willing to trade the freedom and privacy that you would get at a hotel for a hostel that is convenient, economical and historical, I think staying here is worth while. read more

We stayed one night at HI in September. It's a nice, long walk to the water, or a fast, cheap uber ride. We went on an adults-only river cruise that night on a small Hornblower, then walked around historic Sac contemplating a place to get matching tattoos, before retiring to the beautiful Victorian that was our home for the night. We had a gorgeous private room with high ceilings and a very comfy bed. We slept great and woke up to share a small breakfast with some of the other travelers. The entire experience was amazing. It was a perfect weekend night and my only regret was not staying Saturday also, and bringing our kayaks up for some river play! read more

My daughter was married March 11, 2022 at this venue.If there is anyone even slightly considering holding any sort of event there, save yourself a ton of aggravation, disappointment and regret! Do not walk away, RUN! My daughter and her fiancé toured the venue last summer and loved it. They booked it and were promised the bushes would be landscaped and the place would be clean.The person that runs the place, Briana Santos walked them around the place and was nice enough to point out the best place for the ceremony. It was mentioned several times to Briana that they had some guests who were handicapped & Briana showed them the lift for wheelchairs. There are only stairs into the venue and they are steep. The day before the wedding. (We had rented the venue for 2 days). we arrived to find the entire grounds were covered in bird poop.And I mean covered! I wish I could post the disgusting pictures here. My daughter was expected to drag her beautiful wedding dress through all that poop as she was walking to the ceremony area and the steps were also covered in bird poop. My daughter started calling Briana trying to ask what was going to be done about that but her calls went unanswered. We tried to ask Briana, (when she finally showed up) but she had an attitude with us. After calling 4 power washing companies who had no availability, my husband had to go to Home Depot to buy two 200 foot hoses, scrub brushes and cleaning supplies to clean all the grounds and patio area of all the bird poop and worked for several hours getting it all clean. We explained this to Briana and asked if there would be any sort of refund and we were told absolutely not. Later she asked what was going on on the patio. I told her cocktail hour and a grazing table. Then I said something about the ceremony and I kid you not she said, Ceremony?!?!? What ceremony??? She became indignant immediately and said that was news to her and that my daughter told her they rented out the place only to have dinner with a few friends. I know that was not what she was told and I asked her "who rents out a 3 story mansion for 2 days just to have dinner with a few friends?" After the ceremony the coordinator we hired called Briana to ask where the key was for the lift to get the grooms grandfather, aunt and uncle (who were in wheelchairs and walkers) into the mansion. After a very heated phone call we were told she would not be returning with the key and basically too bad for those people. So the grooms aunt, uncle and grandfather had to leave. What happened the next day was infuriating! We were cleaning up as we knew we needed to be out of the mansion by 11 AM the day after. In the midst of us packing up cars and trying to get out of there as soon as we could, my daughter inadvertently left her wedding dress, underskirts, etc downstairs. In the meantime Briana took off again so my daughter went back into the mansion and searched all three floors, opened every closet, looked in cubbies hoping to find her dress and it was nowhere to be found. My daughter had absolutely had it at this point and was frantically calling Briana trying to find out where her dress was. Her calls and texts all went unanswered. When Briana came back, my daughter stayed calm and asked her where her dress and things were and Briana's exact words were "the world doesn't revolve around you! I have another event to attend to and I don't know what to tell you". Needless to say things got very heated as we called the police to try and get my daughters dress back. Briana came out a few times and was extremely rude, condescending and said she searched the entire mansion and it just wasn't there and accused one of us of taking My daughter and her husband were leaving for their honeymoon in a few hours and the police said it would be awhile before they could get there. We waited and pleaded with her as long as we could. I finally told Briana that I would be filing a police report for felony theft and we left. My daughter was beyond upset and immediately called her insurance company as well as Hostelling USA to see if they could file a report for the loss and we called the police again to find out how to file a report for stolen property. Surprisingly (not) Briana called a few hours later and "miraculously" she found her things. It was just as we thought. Briana either took her dress with her when she originally left the mansion or she hid it in a locked room or closet so my daughter wouldn't find it. That mansion was searched three separate times and Briana said she searched it as well (which must have been yet another lie as she stated she found it laying in plain sight on the folding table in the laundry room. (My daughter searched that room multiple times.). So my son in law drove back over to get it and was told just to text her when he got there and she would THROW it over the fence to him. Save yourself lots of agony and frustration! read more

Me and my wife recently had our wedding here on 10/4/2020 after our original venue cancelled due to Covid 19 and were so glad we did. The mansion/hostel is beautiful inside and out. After setting up decoration on the steps and pathway to the courtyard it's was pictures' for our wedding photos. We had to extend our original contracted timeframe by an hour and only cost $100 more. We had our wedding here back in March and they were fantastic! You can rent the whole place out if you want to throw an event (it includes all of the rooms) for a really good price. They don't usually do weddings so it's very much dependent on you to bring in or hire someone to bring in what you need. Our wedding turned out great, the staff were very quick to answer any questions leading up to our wedding and day of and pointing our guests in the right direction for checking in and bedrooms. Highly recommend checking them out if you have an event, and even just to stay for the night or for a weekend! All of the rooms and the hostel in general are very clean and well maintained. This is our family's favorite place to stay when in Sacramento! It's definitely different than a hotel - a hostel is very much a more communal experience, so expectations should be adjusted accordingly - but what a gorgeous facility! Beautiful historic building and extremely close to all manner of good restaurants & fun events downtown. It's generally one or both of my kids plus myself when we're in town, so I have only ever stayed in the private rooms. But they're always very clean, well-maintained, and quiet. The staff are wonderful. We happened to check in right as they were cleaning up after a cooking class so we were directed to help ourselves to snacks. The bathrooms are shared but again, clean and utilitarian. This is a great spot to stay while exploring Sacramento! read more

This is a hidden gem of Sacramento! I've been to many hostels and this one is probably my favorite! I guess because it's in the US, it's part of a big organization, and it has whatever rights to the beautiful Victorian house, that it can be so nice. The staff is very nice and the facilities are clean and don't smell like a dead animal. For about $35 a bed in a dorm, you can't beat it! If you're only randomly staying in Sac for work or whatever, this is great choice! The residents I interacted with were nice--no super creeps. Overnight parking is $5--worth it! The piano could use some serious tuning! I'll probably be back again if I can't crash at a friend's place. read more

Bed was pretty good for sleeping on and breakfast was just ok for people wanting to get in and get out. We actually walked everywhere from the hostel and it wasnt horrible. Met some pretty awesome people and went on a bar crawl are first night there. Associates of the hotel were nice answered all my questions (I had alot), stayed 3 nights and wish i could have stayed longer. There was some painting on the outside going on, but it didnt bother us at all, never heard any noise from the people outside and didnt really hear traffic either. I used to love the Sacramento Hostel. I've stayed in their private queen-bed rooms maybe a dozen times over the years -- but I won't use them any more. They have 3 very good private rooms, but they've added some more on the top floor and they will not let you pick which room you get, only the type of room. So last stay, we ended up in a lousy, uncomfortable room on the third floor. We two seniors had to carry large luggage up stairs to the 3d floor. There was only one towel in the room. The room was hot, even in late Fall, and the street below was noisy especially with the window open to cool it down. To top the stay off, the shower water never got warmer than tepid. Before our stay we tried to call and reserve several times on different days; but they didn't answer their phones, and don't return messages. So we took our chances and reserved online. Then tried to follow up with a phone call to get our favorite room. Again, no response. When we got there, our two preferred rooms were taken. If I had any idea how bad our room was going to be, I would have stayed elsewhere. I could go on with recent problems. OK, a couple more. No place to hang clothes, no stands for suitcases. There was an 8x8 post in the middle of the room, I assume a roof support. The manager listened to my feedback, but my sense was that she was too busy for them to register in her mind so my efforts were wasted. At least the desk person was kind and friendly. read more

First, beautiful late 1800s house. But with has a lot of stairs, so beware if you have any issues with mobility. I stayed in a 3-room women dorm with a bathroom down the hall a few feet. Had the room all to myself first night. Mattress was thin and the room was very cold. Second night I had the rude mom of 3 teenage boys who snored louder than any human I've ever met. She was yelling into her phone while her boys screamed and hollered in the nearby game room. I had headphones on and still couldn't hear my program on my laptop. She was up at 6 am, with light on and not even trying to be quiet. Parking is expensive at $6 a night. Rarely was there anyone at the front desk. Didn't even go to breakfast on my second day because two men almost got into a fight over religion the day before. This is my least favorite hostel in California, so far. read more

What an amazing place! Great prices for a great place to stay. Yes, you have to share a bathroom and a room, but everything is clean and surprisingly comfortable. Amenities include free basic breakfast, game room, lounge area complete with games and books, free wi-fi. If you are staying longer, they have a huge well-equipped kitchen. Bathrooms can accommodate several people at a time. I was worried it would be one of those places where a single bathroom would serve the whole floor, but it's nothing like that. Bathrooms had multiple stalls, sinks and showers. Best of all you are staying in a historic mansion. Beautiful house with beautiful architecture. It's in a great location, but still nice and quiet. read more

Very pretty. The wedding went well and I think the staff was really helpful and great! We went inside for a short time while they changed the venue from seating to tables and everything seemed to go so smoothly. I might let your guests know about all the roots. We were fine and didn't fall but it was a little bit dangerous to be waking in heels with all the roots. The hostel is architecturally impressive; craftsman. I would guess it would be really fun to stay there as well. I would definitely recommend it to others and encourage people to come check it out. There are some people camped out across the street though so I might be a little cautious about things that can happen where large homeless populations can gather near. We didn't have much problem but they did have a rather loud shouting match at one point and that was distracting. read more

I stayed here with a group of high school students while we went to a conference. The students complained that the 10 bunk room was hot, and of course they weren´t used to sharing a bathroom, but overall it was a great stay. They said the building felt like Harry Potter (and I tried to convince them there was a ghost). It's a lovely old building with good space for groups, a basketball court, big porch, long table and common spaces. We'll stay again! read more

Really beautiful building, spacious rooms, and an amazing staff. The whole team is friendly and offers lots of events for locals and travelers alike. Summer they offer 'Bike-In movies' and throughout the year they have many events that support the Hostel's mission to bring people together from all walks of life. As the only Hostel in Sac, HI USA is setting a great example for community building and outreach. This year they gave away two scholarships for people to travel abroad (2k each!) and they are always raising money to award more! This hostel is beautiful, welcoming and has a friendly staff. It was a pleasure to stay here. I met several people from different spots around the world and the U.S.. The kitchen area was spacious enough for several people to use it at a time and it was well-stocked with dishes, etc. The dining and sitting areas were ample and lovely. The garden surrounding the house is beautiful, too. There is a large farmer's market on certain days of the week that is about 2 blocks away. If you're looking to travel cheaply - as I was - you can hit that and live off of your treasures for several days and a few dollars. There's also a drug store about 4 blocks from the hostel where you can get supplies. And the Naked Coffee Shop a couple of blocks away is great. There is not a lot of nightlife within close walking distance so if you are looking for that scene be prepared to take a taxi - (and do some investigating first because some of the cabs are "gypsy" rip-offs) - or walk 15 blocks. I did both, depending on the tiredness of my feet, and the cab ride I got the second time (after the initial rip-off) was reasonable. Great experience. I would definitely return. read more

Stayed here my 2nd time this past weekend. First time was a couple years back. Still great and very affordable. Stayed in the dorm room, which was rather full this time, and a little noisy at night with some other guests snoring and going in/out of the room during the night. (My bed was right in front of the door). Location is great, right in front of City Hall, and only 4 blocks away from the Sunday morning race that I came here for (in front of the Capitol building), so I could simply park my car on the street for free all day Sunday. Free WiFi, free breakfast (came out early at 6:30am, normally 7am), and sheets, pillowcase, and the softest and fluffiest blanket I've ever felt! A great value, and the staff are super friendly and helpful! Booking was very easy, just booking online at the hostels.com website. read more

STAY HERE! I came up to Sac for Aftershock 2017 & stayed here for the weekend. It's in a fun vintage home that's super clean considering its age. Staff was friendly, rooms were clean, kitchen and bathrooms well kept. I HIGHLY recommend staying here & I will be booking another weekend stay for Aftershock 2018. Easy & short Uber to Discovery Park for the festival. Got to even ride-share with other guests joining the festival festivities. To recap, stay here, it's clean, inviting and friendly. Oh, and their decor is SO CUTE, they themed each room with different Halloween decor. The free breakfast is basically a buffet, so GREAT!! read more

My stay could not have been better. The staff that works here is just outstanding- Travis, Kacey, and Brianna in particular- always went out of their way to make my stay the best hostel stay I have ever had. The hostel itself is just lovely. It is an old victorian house in a great spot downtown. Read some other reviews about concerns due to the location but I always felt safe. Even walking alone at night. The kitchen is perfect- it is fully equipped and huge! The rooms are clean and pretty large. I stayed in both a mixed dorm in the basement and a female dorm on the first floor. The female dorm was lovely- wooden bunks, big windows, fireplace, and lockers. The basement was decent, large rooms, clean, quiet but I preferred the female dorm because it was cooler at night and the basement lockers were in the hall. The General Manager said the basement will be remodeled very soon! If you are there on Sunday, sign up for the Sunday Funday and get burgers, brats, drinks and games while you get to know the awesome staff and other travelers! read more

I am in Sacramento for a research project and had housing lined up, so I thought. Suddenly needing a place to stay, I turn to Yelp to find a motel. After reading reviews for many local motels in downtown and out lying areas, I was disappointed to read that most inexpensive places to stay are riddled with bugs, roaches and illicit activity. Being an older man, I hesitated to book at HI Sacramento. I am so glad I did. The hostel is located in an historic 19th century mansion and is super clean and impeccably maintained. The staff are great, friendly and helpful. There were many other guests in my age group, so I felt right at home. Ended up staying eight nights until I found a permanent place to stay for the 2 month project. A wonderful experience, so glad I stayed here. read more

Hidden gem in downtown Sac!! Found this place on SWA (Southwest Airline app). My 1st experience ever in a hostel. Stay for 1 evening only. Priscilla was excellent & informed me details I needed to know. Checkin was simple. Daily rent is $36/day per person. I was in a large room with 4 bunkbeds on the Metro area. There was a laundry facility in the Metro area as well. On your bed, you are provided with 1 flat sheet, 1 fitted sheet, 1 pillow, 1 pillow case and comforter. You make your own bed & place all your sheets in the red hamper in the laundry room. Breakfast is from 7am-10am. It's a light breakfast (bananas, apples, croissants, hard boiled eggs, oranges, yogurt, oatmeal, coffee, water and tea). Wash your own dishes. There are free food in the fridge. Recycling is highly encouraged. This is a very gorgeous hostel. Victorian mansion with intricate details. I slept well and it was comfortable overall. The place has a good energy. It was great meeting new people & getting to know them. I highly recommend this place if you want to have a great experience meeting people. The price is definitely worth it. read more

I was here during Spring Break for an interview with SMUD for an internship (Which I got btw!). It's a beautiful mansion, the staff is friendly, and I love the homey atmosphere of it all. It was my first time living in a hostel and I'm proud to say I'm going back here in 2 weeks to find an apartment or housing for the summer for my internship. I'm actually planning on buying their membership, I can see myself staying at other HI places beyond Sacramento if this is the standard they're having. read more

Stayed here because the Amtrak train was very late and missed my connection. Only 4 blocks from the station. What a gem! A wonderful place to stay with large very clean rooms, great staff, including Lila the dog at check in. A beautifully designed home turned into a hostel. The WiFi is good, bathrooms & shower are not in the room, but down the hall. The main living room looks more like a boardroom with the large table. I'm sure there was much more to like about this place, but was only there 12 hours. read more

Beautiful friendly place! Unbelievable ! Historic and lots of information to get around Sacramento events and places. Recommend for sure! Bring earplugs if you wake up from noise the doors beep and clank shut. Many of the guests i encountered didn't converse even having breakfast or in the hallways. You sleep right next to them. Beautiful place to visit. This is an amazing house with an amazing history! Due to moving a lot, I tend to check in when I'm coming in from another state! This is actually a house that is very well preserved! The beds and building was extremely clean and the staff was super helpful and friendly. If I needed to find anything all I had to do was ask! If you get a 6 bunk room, it is the most Economic way for one a single person to travel! When I stayed in the 6 bedroom it was about $15 for the night and I ended up meeting three very cool girls from different countries that were lodging for the week. I was able to show them all of the bars and night life down town and we had a lot of fun. The one bedrooms were great and the prices did fluctuate! They were very spacey and it is a very comfortable way to go! There was a kitchen where you could prepare food and you can dine in or enjoy the balcony! The place was close to shopping, nightlife and the imax! It's a great place to visit if you are looking to travel on a budget! read more

Clean, comfy, and within blocks of the Sacramento train station and Sac's Old Town/downtown. Of course, that also puts it w/in spitting distance of the Sacramento County prison (which I unwittingly discovered while waiting for the bus outside of the prison fence) but no matter, right? I haven't yet met an American hostel I didn't like, and this is no exception -- a wonderfully restored historic house, one of two of its kind remaining in downtown Sac. Look up to the ceiling in the stairwell, and you'll see the stained glass skylight. I snagged a private room ($37 for HI members, $40 otherwise) on the third floor, which apparently was the smallest room in the house. Really -- the staff I commented to said that they had to custom-design a bed that was small enough to pass fire code. I didn't mind much, as the sprawling public space was clean and comfortable - big couches for reading, a nightly movie, and many tables in the dining room. I was surprised to see that the bathrooms looked nearly new - cleaner than my bathroom at home, certainly. Kitchen was also well-lit, clean, and stocked w/ necessary cooking items. Good (though perhaps dicey, if you're traveling alone) location, great accommodations, and friendly staff. read more

Very nice venue for a wedding! The building is so cool and has so much history. We came here for a wedding but would certainly stay the night here if I needed to. Many of the wedding guests did stay the night but we live locally so did need to. The hostel has a basement with a kids room and a game room and there are bathrooms on every floor and showers in some of the bathrooms, I didn't get a chance to see the sleeping quarters but if they are anything like the rest of the house I am sure they would be nice. There are a few sitting rooms near the entrance and a few other rooms on the first floor that were made into a dance floor for the wedding and a room off the kitchen where the food was set out. The entryway and front desk leads to the staircase. I love the old charm of this place. The patio area in the back under all the trees and vines was nice and cool in the evening and the front porch was so charming to sit out and watch the people go by while sipping a drink. This place has it all and even though I never thought of a place like this for a wedding it was perfectly accommodating for such an event or private party of any kind! We had the entire place to ourselves and for the whole night. The kitchen is roomy and several people can work and prep in there at the same time so no need to have the event catered you can do it yourself right on site. There is parking on site and easy to load and unload through the back door right into the kitchen. I loved to read about the history of the building and how they moved it across the street to where it is today back in the 90's sometime I believe. Its fun to think of all the history and things that have happened in and around this house since the late 1800's. Come check them out if your walking by it is close walking distance to all the downtown hotspots as well. read more
