My check engine light was On prior to the start of the smog check. I did not know that having the check engine light On is an automatic failure. As in the tech is not suppose to start the smog test. The Tech did the test anyways and told me that it failed. I later found out from the tech ,after it failed, that if he knew that the check engine light was on prior to the test, he would have never done the test---But since he did the test, I had to pay. Yes, I should have known better and told him that it was On. But I also expect the professionals to check prior to starting the test. Bottom line, I think he just wanted to make money off me. He told me that I can get a retest for $5 less than what he charged me. Thing is, I've been going to this guy for at least 4 years now. Time to look around for another smog test technician. read more

Smog tests are always a difficult pain typically but evidently last year a new law was in passed that said for cars produced in 1999 and prior, they must go on the dyno. Dyno is the machine with the exhaust component which usually took about an hour to complete. I was in and out within 15 mins! He was able to smog my car and two others before me within 45 minutes, so like 15 minutes a car. Just make sure you got your papers ready to hand him to make everything go smooth.
