Friday night at Hibachi Grill & Buffet in Chantilly should be busy, but this place was dead--just two other tables when we walked in at seven. Hostess barely looked happy to see us, and if that wasn't a sign, the food sealed it. Sushi was crusty, dried out, weirdly gray - honestly, you'd expect fresher from a gas station shelf. Chef at the sushi station was glued to his phone, blasting what sounded like a personal playlist so loud you could catch the rhythm from across the buffet. Wasabi was chalky and ginger looked days old. Soy sauce? Evaporating. Buffet choices were super slim, mainly shrimp. Beef and chicken stir fry didn't look worth the plate space. Two kinds of fried wings in total, which didn't help. Another staff had their phone volume maxed out, so the noise never stopped. Salad bar was a sad scene; brown edges and limp leaves, with dressings crusted over like they'd been sitting since breakfast. Forget the dessert section and fruit; nothing looked tempting. Soup looked so neglected, you'd swear it belonged in a donation bin. Ice cream was worse; just tough lemon and a chocolate that didn't pass the smell test. Only highlight? The hibachi chef hustled to make shrimp, and eggs feel freshly cooked, even if the supplies were running dry. The green tea was decent. But with sticky walls and greasy windows, it's hard not to feel like the place quit on cleanliness a while ago. At least our server has a smile. Pretty mediocre buffet. Our family of 13 was here for dinner and price was about $26/person. There were a lot of food options but thats including 2-3 types of chicken wings, pizza, french fries and nuggets. They used to have lots of seafood options but it looks like the quality had gone down. The crab were not good quality and only one type of crab dish. Headless cajun style shrimp were pretty good, fried shrimp with onion and pepper were also okay. They used to have pyster but no longer offer that. Sushi did not look too appetizing but I didn't expect much from a buffet place. Crawfish were tasteless but they always fill them so it does stay hot and fully stocked which is a plus. They have a hibachi bar which is probably the one dish that wasn't dissappointing, 4 different ice cream options, lots of cakes. Would not be somewhere I would come back to by choice. EXCELLENT WAIT STAFF! For food taste, diversity, and overall quality, I suggest you get in your car, pull a $20 bill out of your wallet, light it on fire, then go back inside your house. The ambience and interior is very warm and open. The seating arrangements have more than enough space so you can enjoy your meal with your party without interruptions from those next to or behind you. This might be one of the few places where I had to actually hesitate when putting the food in my mouth as I had to consider what I was doing the rest of the day just in case something happened to me. I tried at least 1 of everything they served and the best things they offered were the noodles, my diet pepsi and the styrofoam cups of ice cream. Sushi rice was overcooked and cold, the fish on the rice had blotches of discoloring, the meats offered varied in internal temperature (from room temp to warm), the rest of the dishes looked like they had so much oil and grease that it was to compensate for the quality. Definitely not a great combination. If this place only served fountain drinks, jello, and noodles - while keeping their wait staff, this would be a 5/5 any day! read more

Now let's get into the service because if I could give it 0 stars I would but unfortunately I have to settle for just 1. I consider myself a generous tipper as I always tip based on service and even if service isnt the greatest I would leave a tip. After we payed and she came back with our 3 receipts (we split it 3 ways) she was standing infront of me staring waiting for me to right down what I was going to tip and I did not appreciate feeling rushed especially because the service was so bad I honestly wasnt going to leave anything. My friends decided to be generous and leave $2 in cash and the lady came over yelling saying that we have to tip at least $5 and she kept repeating the same thing, mind you, tipping is NOT mandatory, sure it is the right thing to do but if you were treated the way we were you wouldnt have tipped either. My friends and I are latino and she began yelling at us "propina propina" which is "tip" in spanish as if we werent speaking perfect english to her the entire time... She then came over to my side of the table and began yelling at me because I hadn't written down anything on the check yet and I got up and left because she was disrespecting us and yelling at us. My friends followed after and the server began yelling at us in her native language and you could hear her screams across the entire restaurant. We then came back inside and attempted to speak to the manager to complain about how the lady treated us and the lady at the front desk was just smiling laughing like something was funny as if she wasnt taking our complaints seriously. Do not come here! Although the lunch buffet price was $15/person, the options were limited, the food was cold, and the seafood was not fresh. I had a very difficult time finding things to eat, but will say the fried shrimp was decent. When I go to buffets, I try to stick to seafood and sushi, but they only had sushi options and shrimp. Their shrimp was cooked but only slightly, and after peeling looked like it would give you food poisoning. The sushi was drowning in sauce. The service was ok. While eating, our table was given the check, even when there weren't many customers, it felt like they wanted to push us out quick. One highlight was that the hostess was very kind to take pictures of us on their wall and tried her best to get good pictures for us. Another highlight was that the sushi chef was singing and humming along to the music, and it lighten my mood! The ambience was shabby with dimmed yellow lights, and the floor was slippery. Came here, with my friend, her kids and my son for my birthday and it was a bad experience. The customer service was bad! The front lady that seat us seemed upset. The server was really nice. The food was ok some of it was cold. The hibachi grill need more condiments. Different types of shrimp, fish, red meat and chicken. They have a variety of soups too! Both bathrooms were broken, they were extremely dirty, smelled horrible and the soap dispensers were damaged. Sometimes I come here and love it and other times I come here and it's bad enough to where I avoid it for 6+ months. This last visit is one of those times. My biggest pet peeve is they have a printed piece of paper taped to their front door that clearly lists their hours of operations but like tonight they closed an hour early. I came in just after 8 o'clock and started to eat, but I realized that the entire time I was there nothing on the bar got restocked, which is disappointing because I expected them to close at 10 o'clock which is two hours not be on basically last call. Now the main reason I come here is because they offer crayfish and clams and most the time I like the way they're cooked and seasoned here so for $20 I can eat both at whatever quantity I choose. With that said the clams were amazing but the crawfish were very suspicious out of the 25 or so I ate. I had to pick out at least four for being soggy, soft, and just deteriorating and another five or six had to be tossed because the tail meat was black and I ended up not finishing the rest. So in conclusion, food- 2.5 out of 5 price- 4.5 out of 5 ambience- Having the entire staff sitting at the table next to you staring at you waiting for you to leave- 0 out of 5 Look I get it. I came for a Sunday dinner. Food was fresh and flavorful although the selection is a bit limited compared to other Asian buffets I've visited. I aimed mostly for the seafood & short ribs and have no complaints there. They have a sign that says all food must be replaced every 4 hours for safety reasons so it makes sense. The service however was dismal. I only saw 2 workers acting as hostess, waitress, and busser for a restaurant filled with people. Kinda felt bad for them as they were way understaffed.
