I own a short-term rental (Airbnb) in Tempe that recently had an issue with the hot water…read moreheater--it wasn't producing any hot water. I called MAGA Plumbing, partly because I'm a big fan of the name, and Tony seemed like a knowledgeable and honest person to work with. He was also available to come out the next day, which was crucial since the property was occupied by guests. Tony arrived as expected and called me with the diagnosis and options (I live out of state). He provided two options: 1. Replace the two faulty heating elements for $500, which would restore hot water immediately. 2. Replace the tankless electric water heater entirely due to its age and significant corrosion (he sent photos to show the corrosion) for $1,300. However, this would take about a week to get the replacement water heater in stock and installed. I would have preferred the second option, but given the immediate need for hot water for my Airbnb guests, I opted for the $500 heating element repair. Tony assured me that this would solve the issue and provide hot water that day. Here's where the one-star review comes in... Tony called me later that day to let me know the repair had failed and didn't solve the problem. He said I would still need to replace the hot water heater. He offered to discount the work he had done that day by 50%, effectively increasing the total cost of the hot water heater replacement to ~$1,550. Taken aback, I asked if I really had to pay for the work done that day, even though it didn't fix the problem. Tony explained that despite the unsuccessful outcome, he had spent many hours working on it and needed to be paid for his time. Ultimately, I contacted my property manager's plumbing recommendation. That plumber was able to replace the tankless hot water heater the very next day for $900. Additionally, they installed a shutoff valve, isolating the water heater from the main water line for easier maintenance in the future. To be clear, this one-star review is not because Tony couldn't fix the problem--it's because he charged me even though the repair didn't work. While I didn't want to cause conflict and only questioned him once, I believe it's unfair to pay for a solution that didn't resolve the issue. I shared this story at the Thanksgiving table, and everyone was shocked that a company would charge for a failed repair. The general sentiment among my family was that if a company or vendor offers a solution and it doesn't work, they should absorb the cost. We panicked and our minds went to the worst. I found this company and decided to give them a try based on other reviews. everyone who came out was incredible and so friendly. They made the whole process painless and I actually really enjoyed meeting them, despite the circumstances. Each person was so kind and took care of the house as if it was their own. The thing I see other people upset with and something i didn't know going into this is that this company DOES NOT do the repairs after the remediation. This was no issue to me, and i was able to call around while they did the work and find someone local to come patch up the drywall once they were done. But if you're not prepared for that, i can see how that would be upsetting to someone. Be careful not to assume the work anyone will do and always ask every question that comes into your mind. Brandan came out first to check for plumbing issues and was able to determine that our mold was likely not plumbing, something we needed to rule out. After talking him to him about the situation and how we just bought the house, he offered to check the plumbing of the rest of the house and came back with some really good catches. Nothing major but he was able to explain what he would recommend, and gave us quotes but made it clear there was no pressure. Having someone who knew so much was really wonderful to have out and it made us kick ourselves for not having a plumber come out with the home inspector but now we have a solid plumber we know we can call when/if we need one! Brandan also said that the mold issue was now something that needed to go to their mold guy,Ruben and called him right up. Ruben was able to come out same day and give us a better idea of the situation and a quote for the remediation. The price was fair and he said he would try his best to remove as little as possible while still being safe and thorough. He was so kind as well and very sympathetic to our situation, we immediately felt like we were in good hands. Ruben and Ivan came out to do the remediation work a few days later and they were amazing. They showed up on time, were quick yet also quiet, got the work done in the quoted time AND managed to save me a whole wall and builder shelves. Ruben then said he would adjust the cost of the service to reflect that as well, literally couldn't get any better. Getting an unexpected mold issue means saving any bit of money we could was huge, this also saved us on the drywall repair we had to do later. Ruben took so many pictures and took the time to talk me through what they saw and brought me into the space to show me and made sure i understood. Then when he came back the next day to pick up the fan, he took the time to do the same with my husband who hadn't been there the day before to make sure we both had all our questions answered. Plus the report we got after was so extensive and wonderful. Not everyone will put the effort into writing up a whole report, and just claim the work was done but they had sections for each step and lots of pictures. This review might sound overly positive, someone might be like they must have done something that you can critique but even my husband who can be quite picky with the work other people do, was impressed and had no comments. We were so stressed and i cant tell you what a calm presence and years of knowledge can do for people like us. this really set the bar for me and made me very happy to went with a local company. I had another local plumber come out to fix something a few days before them and did not have a good experience at all and when they called to ask me how the work went i told them i left feeling not the best. I'm so glad we not only were able to get rid of the mold BUT found a new plumber to keep on speed dial.
