The Hickory Stick was more than a find for a late lunch. It was a trip back in time. As I wound around the back roads, further from the freeways, congestion and 2023 in general,I really felt like I was back in 1976,the year the Hickory Stick opened. As everywhere, I'm sure this area has changed a lot since Hickory Stick opened in August 1976. However, looking around,I can't imagine what has changed. There are signs of new construction in a vacant field but mostly everything is 10 years or older and almost a country feel. Let me make it clear, this is a place you have to want to get to. It's not an easy on and off a freeway. The patrons appear to be all locals with 2 large birthday parties starting while I was there. Be prepared to feel like you are in the 1970s when you walk in. Everything is time warped in a good way. The Service is pleasant and mannerly, prices great and food delicious. Im not exaggerating when I say the straight up pinto beans are in the top 3 that ive ever eaten. Highly unexpected as the sides are usually the weak point at these older places. The potato salad was just different enough to seem unique. It was dynamite fantastic though. I love potato salad and this is a good one. However, the biggest surprise was my first bite of chopped beef sandwich. You know those movie scenes where everything goes in reverse through the years back to a specific point in time? That's what happened and I landed at a BBQ place of my childhood. It tasted exactly the same! This place is special in a sentimental way. Anyone from Texas will be comfortable, like visiting grandma's house. You'll instantly recognize the food at first bite and all the stress will flow from your body as your faith in humankind is restored. If you are anywhere close, I have to urge... Go!!!

Ol Hickory Stick...I waited so long to try this bbq joint. And I was glad that I did, until I got sick. Ok, so the service here is good, the people here are friendly. The food: the food was flavorful. The turkey was juicy. Their other meats are filled with smokey flavors as well. However, I'm not quite sure about the quality of meat they use. After visiting here, I got pretty sick. I wish I hadn't, but I did. Now if you're use to eating all different types of meats from different places and your body isn't as sensitive as mine, I say go ahead and try Hickory Stick. At the very least you'll be happy with the flavor and the cost of your meal.

Super quick service, plenty of self seating, best pork ribs EVER and you can't go wrong with their brisket. Our favorite of the sides was the baked potato salad. We'll be back to try the rest!

One meat plate - chopped brisket, Mac n cheese and macaroni salad.

Friendly folks, delicious BBQ! This is a legit Texas BBQ spot off the beaten path and worth a visit. You walk in, walk right up to the counter and order and these folks have their system down to a science! Once you have your tray of food, it's off to find a place to sit and there are plenty of choices. From the outside the restaurant seems much smaller than it is. Everything was delicious and the portions were generous for the prices! We can't wait to go back again soon!

Over all great service and good food. Walk up ordering with a nice selection of traditional BBQ meats and side dishes. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful, even provided drink refills. Restaurant was clean and had a quaint atmosphere with all the charm of a local BBQ eatery. Many in the party ordered brisket and it looked great. I ordered the Smoked Turkey sandwich $7 with a side of beans... total $10... a decent amount of food for lunch.

Rib plate, ranch style beans and potato salad. The bbq sauce is addicting.

So, we were looking for a different bbq joint, that turned out not to be a bbq joint. This place was in the area, and we'd both heard about it so figured why the hell not? Old building, got the big Cowboy sign out front with the name on it. If you believe the banner hanging outside, place has been here forty four years. It wasn't very busy on a mid afternoon Saturday. Walk in, order at counter. Decided to get a rib plate, and a two meet plate so we could try things out. Got brisket and sausage on two meat plate. Ended up getting potato salad, kernel corn, and ranch style beans as sides. Plates come with toasted bread and a cup of sauce, pickles and onion slices are available as self serve. We grabbed a couple of fountain drinks. BBQ comes out and it looks pretty good. This isn't a craft bbq place. This is an old school bbq joint here. We got lean brisket, as is custom at old school places. Weren't asked, and forgot to ask if moist was an option. It wasn't the greatest looking brisket, but it honestly was tender and a little moist, not dry at all. It had a good taste. From the looks of the joint, I expected to get Eckrich style, premade, packaged sausage but was surprised that what we got obviously wasn't. Maybe something made for the place that they smoke? I dunno, but it was good, down to earth sausage. I enjoyed it. The ribs were tender, came off the bone good, and had a good taste also. I would have preferred some more flavor, but the ribs were good and what I expected. The bark was tender, not chewy. The sides were simple, but good. Corn looked out of the can, and the beans are, as advertised, ranch style beans. The potato salad we both thought was homemade, and it was your old style, grandma's summer hot dog cookout kind of potato salad. Light mustard base. You know what I mean. It really was pretty good. BBQ sauce is an afterthought nowadays, but I love good BBQ sauce. The one they serve here I think is fantastic, and addicting. I know I really like it when I'm dipping my bread/toast in it to finish it off. Didn't taste any vinegar in it really. I didn't get the ketchup heavy taste I get at most places nowadays. This is a sauce worthy of ANY bbq joint. Great stuff. Anyway, inside is pretty rustic. Looks like the place has had the obligatory build on's over the years. Front room, then a side room and a back room look like they were added at some point in time. It's a nice place, I enjoyed the BBQ here, and would make it a place to come back to occasionally. The price is certainly right. Everything was around $37, plus a few bucks tossed in the tip jar. Well worth what you get.

We happened upon Hickory Stick while out and about this weekend. When walking in, you can tell the place has been in business for a long time (almost 50 years) and for good reason! They have a home style, small town vibe and the atmosphere is calm and welcoming. It appears they also have a lot of regular customers. You walk up to the counter, order, and the food is served to you almost immediately. We enjoyed the sausage, turkey, chopped brisket, mac and cheese, green beens, baked potato salad, and macaroni salad. Of those, I would say the best meat was the turkey (very tender and juicy) and the best side was the macaroni salad. I'm looking forward to coming back to try more!

Talk about good eating man this place has great backyard style bbq. You won't find the highest quality of meat here but you will find good bbq and friendly faces. The toast is a rare side many places don't give so I was happy to have a big slice of Texas toast with my meal. Those baked beans took me home along with those ribs and Mac and cheese and the portions well I had to get a to ho plate because it was a bit too much for me to finish. This is one of those nice hole in the wall joints without all the internet hype.

I hate to give them 3 stars even though they had grate customers made you feel like apart of the family and there price were grate the bbq wasn't that good the brisket was dry no bard had no real flavor tuckey seem to be daily meat that they smoke the sausage was ok had a weird after tast beans where the best thing they just out of the can bbq sauce tasted to much like ketchup it a naberhood place maybe it was just late so it wasn't as good as it should be

We happened upon this quaint bbq restaurant. We ordered the meat plates- turkey, pork ribs and brisket. The ribs and brisket were tender and delicious. Turkey was not as appealing, stick to the brisket and pork. The meat plates come with two sides. The Mac n cheese was delicious! I wouldn't recommend the ranch style beans. The service was fast and people were very friendly. We will come again.

Chopped Brisket, Sliced Brisket, beans (amazing) Mac n cheese, pork ribs and sauce. Texas toast. And of course SWEET TEA

Found this during an outing with my wife one afternoon. Looked like a appropriate slogan for a BBQ joint and it wasn't kidding! Best Bang for your buck Bbq I've had for awhile. All the favorites and it was good! We each ordered brisket, and split some ribs. Loved the large side of sauce and always love a piece of Texas toast. Will be back soon to try more menu items. I would definitely give this place a try!

Stopping for some bbq takeout. This is the seating in the back of the restaurant.

Great find! We got two combo plates that included chopped brisket, hot links, ribs, potato salad, cole slaw, ranch beans, and green beans. The stand outs were the ribs and chopped brisket. Both were delicious and did not need any BBQ sauce. The hot links were good, clean, and tender, but not spicy. The green beans and the ranch beans were both full of flavor and great side. However both the potato salad and cole slaw had a bit too much mayo, but still good. The restaurant is doing a great job with covid precautions. Everyone wore masks, staff were also wearing gloves, and all were 6 feet apart. Overall - delicious food, large portions, great service, awesome price. I will definitely come back.

Worth every minute of the wait. This one's climbing my top 50 list faster than a brisket disappears at a family reunion. After one failed mission to Sabar BBQ, where I showed up too late and found an empty pit (and an emptier stomach), I came back like a man on a barbecue pilgrimage. The sun was blazing, the line was growing, and I wasn't about to be left holding nothing but a napkin this time. Pitmaster Zain Shafi runs this blue trailer like a flavor command center. The smell hit me halfway through the line and had me grinning like a kid at the state fair. I made my move when it was my turn, and if you know me, you know lamb is my kryptonite. I ordered the Sichuan Lamb Ribs, then couldn't stop myself from adding brisket and Tandoori Turkey. The sides? Kachumber Salad and Daal Chawaal, because even Uncle Sean needs balance in life. Zain loaded everything up, tossed it all on top of some naan for good measure, and sent me to my table like a champion headed to the winner's circle. The first bite of lamb ribs nearly had me proposing to the pit. Spicy, tender, smoky perfection with a bark that made my heart sing. The brisket was rich and juicy, the turkey came with that tandoori kick that slapped me awake in the best way possible. The sauces just tied the whole thing together like a big barbecue hug. The yogurt mint cilantro sauce was made to cool and lift the brisket and turkey to a whole new level. The red sauce packed a punch and paired with the lamb like it was born for the job. I boxed up some leftovers for my wife, the Side Dish Queen herself, because a man who doesn't bring home naan from Sabar BBQ is a man sleeping on the couch. She confirmed what I already knew: this was next-level barbecue, the kind that earns legends and long lines. Sabar BBQ is only open on weekends, and only fools show up late. I won't make that mistake again. This was stop number 15 on my Texas Monthly Top 50 journey, leaving me with 35 more glorious BBQ pilgrimages ahead before the passport is full and my belt officially waves the white flag. If loving these lamb ribs is wrong, I don't wanna be rib-right.

Well, what to say? Walked in on a Friday night to find it was trivia night. Had we known it would…read morehave been fun to show up earlier! Ordered 2 - 2 meat meals. Pulled pork - so so. Ribs were good but looked oddly brown - maybe put in a steamer? Smoked turkey was okay - tender and not overly smoky. Potato salad was bland, Cole slaw was even more bland. Pinto beans were surprisingly good! We asked about bread after getting our food and were told bread comes with a meat dinner. Oops! They would get it - but didn't and we then asked again just for the principle of it all. When the rolls came, cold, hard and not worth even a bite. Everyone working there was polite and attentive. We all agreed that our dishes lacked flavor in one way or another. The brisket & pulled pork were cooked well but had no seasoning, the salsa tasted like blended veggies but was missing salt or cilantro or something- anything!, and the elote was drowning in butter. The BBQ sauce Sweet Baby Ray's, which is fine, but don't label it as your BBQ sauce and then give me SBR with my to-go order. There is a housemade glaze that we all thought was very odd - had a strong raisin/date flavor and it was sweet. The only things we could think of that it might taste good on were something sweet like a cinnamon roll, or maybe to glaze a ham. I tried it with the pulled pork and didn't love it. Overall, our meal was fine, but completely forgettable.
