We came here on a hot route after seeing that the line at Goldee's was 2.5 hours long and I wasn't wow'd per se, but it was a solid place. I got my usual 2 meat plater with briskets, pork ribs, beans and mac and cheese. I would say everything was solid, but nothing really stood out except the ribs, they were really good! The mac and cheese had bacon in which was a nice touch but didn't elevate it overall. The place looks like something straight out of the late 70's or early 80's and I don't think they have added any new decor since. The people were extremely friendly and the service was fast. From Los Angeles, but I grew up with a Midwestern kitchen Kansas City, Missouri style so I know the barbecue when I eat it. Wow this place was delicious! I was visiting TX with my family and found this spot that was semi-on the way to Dallas Lovefield. I love that it's kind of hidden away from busy things. I ordered the ribs with baked potato salad and cole slaw. Everything was delicious. Ribs were fall off the bone. The BBQ sauce was homemade and tasty. I was unsure about the cole slaw but I loved it. My kids shared a small side of Mac and cheese and enjoyed it, there were little pieces of bacon in it I think. The bbq chicken and chopped beef sandwich also received high praise from my family. My Dad and I came here early around 11am because my Uncle, who is a local, told us it would be crowded. Fortunately it was empty, no line even for a Saturday. We experienced great service and hospitality here. I ordered a combination plate of brisket and sausage with a side of macaroni salad and potato salad. We also ordered some stuff to go to bring to family members later, which they put away for us to pick up before we left. Our food was served right away and we got a seat in the back since we were told it was coolest back there. There was lots of Texas Rangers memorabilia on the walls as well as many deer mount and antlers. There were also a few TV's in the back for entertainment. My brisket was super tender and the sausage had a great snap and a nice peppery flavor. I liked how the bbq sauce was this and perfect for dipping your brisket it. It seemed more like a gravy than a bbq sauce. The Texas toast was fluffy, buttery and crispy, which cut through all the richness of the meat. The macaroni salad was really good and had a nice vinegary punch. The potato salad was hearty and thick, but melt in your mouth soft. There are signs of new construction in a vacant field but mostly everything is 10 years or older and almost a country feel. Let me make it clear,this is a place you have to want to get to. It's not an easy on and off a freeway. The patrons appear to be all locals with 2 large birthday parties starting while I was there. Be prepared to feel like you are in the 1970s when you walk in. Everything is time warped in a good way. The Service is pleasant and mannerly, prices great and food delicious. Im not exaggerating when I say the straight up pinto beans are in the top 3 that ive ever eaten. Highly unexpected as the sides are usually the weak point at these older places. The potato salad was just different enough to seem unique. It was dynamite fantastic though. I love potato salad and this is a good one. However,the biggest surprise was my first bite of chopped beef sandwich. You know those movie scenes where everything goes in reverse through the years back to a specific point in time? That's what happened and I landed at a BBQ place of my childhood. It tasted exactly the same! This place is special in a sentimental way. The food: the food was flavorful. The turkey was juicy. Their other meats are filled with smokey flavors as well. However, I'm not quite sure about the quality of meat they use. After visiting here, I got pretty sick. I wish I hadn't, but I did. Now if you're use to eating all different types of meats from different places and your body isn't as sensitive as mine, I say go ahead and try Hickory Stick. So, we were looking for a different bbq joint, that turned out not to be a bbq joint. This place was in the area, and we'd both heard about it so figured why the hell not? Old building, got the big Cowboy sign out front with the name on it. If you believe the banner hanging outside, place has been here forty four years. It wasn't very busy on a mid afternoon Saturday. Walk in, order at counter. Decided to get a rib plate, and a two meet plate so we could try things out. Got brisket and sausage on two meat plate. Ended up getting potato salad, kernel corn, and ranch style beans as sides. Plates come with toasted bread and a cup of sauce, pickles and onion slices are available as self serve. We grabbed a couple of fountain drinks. BBQ comes out and it looks pretty good. This isn't a craft bbq place. This is an old school bbq joint here. We got lean brisket, as is custom at old school places. Weren't asked, and forgot to ask if moist was an option. It wasn't the greatest looking brisket, but it honestly was tender and a little moist, not dry at all. It had a good taste. From the looks of the joint, I expected to get Eckrich style, premade, packaged sausage but was surprised that what we got obviously wasn't. Maybe something made for the place that they smoke? I dunno, but it was good, down to earth sausage. I enjoyed it. The ribs were tender, came off the bone good, and had a good taste also. I would have preferred some more flavor, but the ribs were good and what I expected. The bark was tender, not chewy. The sides were simple, but good. Corn looked out of the can, and the beans are, as advertised, ranch style beans. The potato salad we both thought was homemade, and it was your old style, grandma's summer hot dog cookout kind of potato salad. Light mustard base. You know what I mean. It really was pretty good. BBQ sauce is an afterthought nowadays, but I love good BBQ sauce. The one they serve here I think is fantastic, and addicting. I know I really like it when I'm dipping my bread/toast in it to finish it off. Didn't taste any vinegar in it really. I didn't get the ketchup heavy taste I get at most places nowadays. This is a sauce worthy of ANY bbq joint. Great stuff. Anyway, inside is pretty rustic. Looks like the place has had the obligatory build on's over the years. We happened upon Hickory Stick while out and about this weekend. When walking in, you can tell the place has been in business for a long time (almost 50 years) and for good reason! They have a home style, small town vibe and the atmosphere is calm and welcoming. It appears they also have a lot of regular customers. Talk about good eating man this place has great backyard style bbq. You won't find the highest quality of meat here but you will find good bbq and friendly faces. The toast is a rare side many places don't give so I was happy to have a big slice of Texas toast with my meal. I arrived pretty late in the day (an hour before close) and was very happy with the dining experience. The ladies in front were very helpful with my food selections and we had some fun while I was ordering. I went with the 2 meat platter of ribs and brisket with ranch beans and baked potato salad as my sides. I also had a big piece of pecan pie and a large chilled goblet of Shiner Bock. Both were delicious and did not need any BBQ sauce. The hot links were good, clean, and tender, but not spicy. The green beans and the ranch beans were both full of flavor and great side. However both the potato salad and cole slaw had a bit too much mayo, but still good. The restaurant is doing a great job with covid precautions. Another great Everman eatery. Been here a few times, mainly to dine in with friends. Lunch crowd can get busy, depending on the day, so going early is always a good idea. I've done a to-go order right after getting off work there and it wasn't as busy then. The sandwich plate is a good meal for a great price. I like the chopped or sliced beef sandwich with either the loaded baked potato salad or the mac and cheese. Friends have said the chicken and sausage were good too. The barbecue sauce is just how I like it- a little on the thinner side and a little more vinegary/savory than sweet. Also, the banana pudding and the cobblers are all good. Found this place through a Yelp search on a road trip back from Arlington. Almost didn't try it because it was a 10-15 minutes off the highway....man, would that have been a mistake! Great portions of high quality food that have that family recipe feel to them. Brisket was tender and moist with a great snake ring and amazing bark. After paging through this year's BBQ Guide from Fort Worth Magazine, I realized that despite living in Fort Worth for close to 30 years now, I have yet to visit the Hickory Stick. Seeking to avoid the ire of the food gods, I departed at once. Checking the times, I was happy that the Hickory Stick is one of the BBQ places that opens before lunch service, as I already had BBQ on the brain that morning (I want it now!). Usually I opt to try all the meats (or at least the Big Three - Brisket, Ribs, and Sausage), however I decided to keep things simple and just ordered the Brisket and Ribs combination plate. The Brisket: the Hickory Stick is known for good brisket and I definitely was not disappointed here. Some nice bark and moderate smoky flavor, overall a solid brisket. Not a whole lot of rub on this, just the smoky flavor of the meat. The Ribs: While people have raved about the brisket here, I think the ribs are even better. A nice, crusty skin with heavy smoky flavor on the ribs make them some of the best in Fort Worth. Cooked to perfection where the meat only came apart once bit into and accompanied by some nice rub as well, it is worth going out of your way to try these out. The Sauce: While I never actually need sauce for my BBQ, I do like a little to dip the meat into. This tangy, spicy-on-the-back-end, rust-colored sauce may just be my favorite in Fort Worth now. So I would say my trip to the Hickory Stick was definitely a success. I now have another great place on the South Side to add to my rotation.
