Disappointing Hamburger and Homemade Chips! On a Sunday evening, my husband and I were looking forward to take out hamburgers and homemade chips. We were so disappointed. We ordered our burgers cooked medium. What we got were well done lumps of meat, no lettuce or tomato on one of the burgers and soggy chips. We asked for extra blue cheese and ranch dressings for the chips. We got one blue cheese and no ranch. What should have been a delicious meal, wasn't. As an aside, we had to call three times until the order was finally taken. The first two times we were put on indefinite hold. Went last night for the first time. Maleea was awesome. The burger was great. A little too much butter on the bread for my taste but if there is ever a next time I'll know to request no butter. The fries were not hot. Don't understand why, the place was not busy. They were tasty but not happy with them not being hot. My husband ordered the tavern burger and not happy with the onions. I think this may be the sports bar and wing place I was looking for in Hickory. So many TVs, you can't possibly not see the game if it's on. The menu is good. Can I just tell you not many places can keep consistency especially in Hickory! If you are in area just want good food this is place! Great friendly staff, good food. Oysters are always good, not any choices just whatever they have and are fresh. Tried bucket of trash and was great! ( bartender was super and gave us raw oysters instead of steamed bc they were not busy) crab legs steamed shrimp and oysters perfect for two people. This bar is the go-to spot in Hickory. Since moving here from SC, everyone at HT has been extremely hospitable and fun! My favorite bartender is Alyssa. Simply put - she's awesome. Hickory Tavern is a great place to catch the game or to just enjoy great food and drinks. They have TVs everywhere, guaranteeing that if your game for some reason isn't on, they can find a tv to show it, and they're happy to do that for you! The draft beer selection is great, as Hickory Tavern showcases popular craft beers from all over the country and from many of the nearby regional breweries. Try the turkey club, and be sure to add avocado if that's your thing! Also, they have, hands down, the best oysters in the area. They are always fresh, and they are HUGE!! I've found the service to be quick and friendly. Even when they're a packed house the staff are always moving quickly and purposefully. Walk over to the bar and ask if Alyssa's there. If so, have her make you a Bloody Mary. She adds a delicious and unique combination of traditional and "secret" ingredients, and she garnishes with celery AND olives! It's the only way to have one. And when she has finished mixing it and presents it to you, her smile and the sparkle in her eyes as she watches you love it are almost as refreshing as the drink itself! read more

Beyond appalled by the lack of service. Have been a loyal customer of this location for years and watched the service and management decrease to nothing. We went to this location for Sunday lunch - a time in which a late crowd should be expected and prepared for. We watched another tables food sit under heat lamps for 30 minutes before it was taken to the table by a manager. After 45 minutes, we received or entrees and never saw a hint of receiving our salads which should have been brought before the meal. All 4 entrees - burgers, tacos, and wings - were cold sitting on warm plates; hence, the food had been sitting under heat lamps for some time. When we asked the server what was going on, she proceeded to give us her personal opinion of how poorly the kitchen was operating. The manager, who is new to this location and was brought in from the high volume, successful Steel Creek location to fix the issues, came over and expressed his apologies and as expected comped the bill. He continued to express that he hopes to have the location fixed and in better conditions within the next few months. Very sad to see a location that previously HS been so successful and a go-to location for locals in Hickory go down the drain by holding the service and food to such poor standard. Needless to say we will no longer be returning to this location. read more

We decided to stop here since we had driven by and always wondered about it. We ordered the deluxe nachos and a byo salad. The nachos were AMAZING and filled my husband and I up. The salad was ok, too much eggs, because that is all we could taste, but we believe that the nachos were so good, anything would have paled in comparison at that point. I highly recommend since they have a huge bar, with a large selection of beers and quite a few on tap. Go with the nachos and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. I don't even like sports bars as a general rule, but I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Hickory Tavern. I'd describe it more as a good restaurant with a bit of a sports bar vibe because the stereotypical sports bar, in my experience, has subpar food and, in my opinion, that could not be further from the truth with regards to this place! Seriously, I was impressed by the freshness and quality of the food. (I'm a burger fanatic and if I'm going to indulge, I want it to be worth the calories -- this one definitely was.) Our waitress was fun, friendly, and very helpful with making sure the multiple food allergies of our party were accommodated. So much so that I made a point of asking the manager to come to our table at the end of the meal specifically to let her know. read more

Hickory Tavern is a step up from an Applebee's or Chili's - the food is decent and fairly priced. Most Hickory Tavern locations that I have been to are pretty big. They usually have a large bar, bar area with high top tables, and ample amount of dining room area with lower tables and booths. They are a decent sports bar with lots of tv's around the restaurant for you to catch your favorite team's game. read more

Every time that I have eaten at the Hickory Tavern the food has been great and the prices seem to be reasonable for the quality. I would definitely recommend this place for the food and the atmosphere is nice too, with plenty of televisions showing most of the sporting events of the moment. Unfortunately every time that I have been the Hickory Tavern I have almost had to jump up and down to get someone to notice that we need service. Our experience in the restaurant area has been better than the bar area, but not good enough to limit our visit to once a year (for the food only). What a great find. The ambience when you walk in to the tavern is deceptive. What looks like an average pub with big screen TV's playing every game imaginable turned out to be a nice place to eat. The wings were good and like the charred option. The beer selection is great and was happy to see beers like Duvel and Maresdous in Hickory. The Shrimp with Grits was made very well albeit the plate was too busy. Grits were nicely done which is not an easy task. The bartender was nice, friendly and attentive. I found this place because I absolutely had to watch my Patriots, and this hotel has no NFL package. So glad I did! Great, attentive waitstaff! Let me start by saying everything here is overpriced, but everything is also good. Don't come here for a burger and beer, go to the taproom (Better Value). Beer selection is alright on draft, great in bottles. I HATE paying an arm and a leg for a decent bottled beer when I am out and that is what it is like here. Overall I liked it though. This place is a bad joke. When my party arrived we were advised to sit wherever, so we did, no big deal. The gentleman up front advised us we couldn't sit there, so we moved and waited several minutes before a waitress shows up and states we can't sit there either because there are no waitresses in that section either. Mind you, a gaggle of waitresses were gathered around the soft drink dispenser chatting the entire time. We had been to this place several times before and the service was horrendous, food mediocre, and alcohol watered down each time. This time we had hoped all would be well since it's Friday evening. We went on a Friday night sat at the bar it was 10 minutes before we got asked about a drink and then 20 more minutes before they took order after I ask them 3 times then we waited 25 minutes for our food and that's after I complained to the manger which was a waste of time he just passed the buck and lied about our wait time! We want go back food prices are high for what you get and the service outright sucks!
