This was a terrible experience. We were looking for decent Mexican food and since this place seemed to have better reviews, we gave it a shot. I just cared about getting my kids some good food so I ignored the looks of the place. Once seated, we ordered drinks and I asked for milk for the kids, the waitress pushed their chocolate milk (side note: when a parent asks for white milk for their kids, don't say you have chocolate milk because of course the kids will want it and not all parents want to give their kids all that sugar). They brought the chocolate milk, my daughter took one big gulp and said it tasted funny. I tried it and it was very sour. We told them and at first they were apologetic but when we rejected the second milk they tried to bring out to the kids, the manager came out and tried to say we were being rude to the staff and said the milk wasn't expired. Rude? You pushed old chocolate milk on my kids. They are kids, they could get very sick from it. I told her if it wasn't expired, maybe she should drink some to which she replied they already threw it out. What bothers me even more is that nobody asked for chocolate milk but they decided to push their old, sour chocolate milk on poor little kids. The food was horrible as well but compared to the milk situation, it didn't stand out. They didn't charge us for the milk or the kids food so I'll give them that but given the sour milk and the manager's attitude, it definitely wasn't worth it. read more

The chicken Tacos had a great taste and they supplied me with plenty of tender chicken. I feel like the side items could have included a bigger helping. I love this place! Great food and staff. I've been several times consistently good. Nice chunky salsa fresh and delicious, always buy a pint to go. Great rice and beans and my favorite always order enchilada suiza. Amazing Verde sauce yum. This place is quite large and on a hidden path in a small shopping center behind a day-care. Family owned, super friendly and quite reasonable. The restaurant now has their liquor license if in the mood for a cocktail. All this located in lovely down town Belleville. This place is awful. I'm 99.9% convinced that any good review of it is only the result of bribery for free meals. I had such high hopes as a long time Belleville resident that we have a high quality local Mexican restaurant to patronize based on my perusal of reviews. I've honestly never been so let down by Yelp... I took my kids here for lunch as we are homebound for most of summer vacation and like to enjoy a few outings per week doing various things. I researched my options for Mexican cuisine carefully and chose to patronize a local establishment. The result of this endeavor was dismal at best. Disgusting food from start to finish. Flavorless tortilla chips and salsa was the first red flag. Then our food came out literally five minutes after our order was placed. My son got a chicken quesadilla off the kids menu that was completely inedible. It was preboiled, water logged chicken piled atop some still cold store bought cheese in an arbitrarily cooked tortilla shell, and the entire thing was literally SWIMMING in water. Could have filled an entire glass with this quesadilla water. He wouldn't touch it, and I wouldn't let him, as I was already scared of the potential for food poisoning at this point. Somehow, my cheese enchiladas were both dried out and filled with cold Meijer Mexican Shredded Blend at the same time. This was truly a culinary feat. As a proud home chef with a popular Instagram account for the meals I cook for the past few years, I don't think I will ever learn how one gets dried up sauce on hard tortilla shells with half cold half melty cheese inside. Utterly disgusting. The waitress wondered if we wanted to go boxes for all the food we didn't eat and tried to grill me about whether we liked it, but after that cluster cuss this place has zero chance for redemption in my book. I paid my bill and walked away and will never ever go back. If you're smart, you'll stay far far away from this placed and visit one of the authentic taquerias in nearby Ypsi like I should have. Not authentic Mexican AT ALL. It was flavorless and bland. They put sour cream in the guacamole, why? People who can't eat dairy can't eat it then. Took an hour for the drinks to come and same with the food. The margaritas tasted like they came out of a bag, very sugary and you can taste the mix. Very disappointed. Around the time we moved to Belleville, friends from Ann Arbor told us of this place in 2016. We've been thoroughly enjoying various menu items ever since. Their menu items are prepared from fresh ingredients, also for their sauces. You can't find better Salsa! I'm diabetic type 2, and have ordered their veggie quesadilla with only the refried beans (no rice) and have been pleasantly surprised at my day-after glucose reading. And the meal was delightfully delicious! That's even after consuming at least 15 chips of their chips-n-salsa (bet ya can't eat just one!)! But the nail in the coffin for me was after my dinner companion and I paid the $29 bill the server who was quite standoffish and rude then proceeded to give me my coin change and a $10 bill. ( how do I tip you?) any server would never do that because they want a tip and it's just the appropriate way to give back change . that way giving the customer the ability to tip what is appropriate . this of course also after the fact that the individual at the cash register States oh I don't handle anything in cash only credit cards. what the heck are you kidding me? the waitress had to do the bill on a calculator and have me pay the bill out of her apron..... THAT SEEMS KOSHER! !!! then I had to request change which is fine even though there was no one else in the restaurant and they were not busy she then proceeded to say oh thank you and put all $10.00 i. her apron and then re engage with the conversation with who I assume the owner was and completely ignore me .. with shock and awe on my face I was completely taken back for the fact that she may be was to our table twice the whole night and her demeanor was less less-than engaging... I will never ever ever patronize this establishment ever again I hope the $10 was worth losing a customer who is in the area frequently and if you cannot make it down to Mexican Town this would suffice but definitely not what I would call authentic at all . it is more or less a bad version of Americanized Mexican such as Armando's.. when you have a white waitress with red hair and gray roots look at you like you're crazy or don't know what you're talking about ..when you ask do you have carnitas or torta sandwiches ... Liz W's review made me realize that I've never even seen this place. I've been living in town for nearly 5 years and didn't know there was a Mexican joint nearby! We drove down Sumpter rd and saw a guy in a Giant Taco suit waving! SCORE~ I ordered the Fajitas and the boys went ala carte with a variety of tacos. My Fajitas came out sizzling and smelled delish. They were pretty good but not as good as my sons tacos. He gobbled down three of them. I wanted to take the salsa home in a 5 gallon bucket. Best I've had in a while. We tried the fried ice cream. I'm not sure if it wasn't good or that I just don't like fried ice cream. I have never found it good. It always has a stale cornflake with freezer burnt ice cream kind of taste to it. Read a few favorable reviews about this place, and we love to seek out places owned by local people. I am by no means a Mexican food expert, but I have eaten at a number of 'authentic' Mexican restaurants, including those mentioned in other reviews for this place. Love Los Amigos, Mexican Fiesta, and El nibble nook. Thought Don Pesos was 'meh', love Mexican town. (i mention all this for a frame of reference) The setup is sparse, but bright and clean. It wouldn't necessarily be a romantic or fancy place, but there is nice seating with comfy booths. The staff is very cheerful, and responsive. I ordered the combo plate with flour fried taco. It was the best flour fried taco, I've had. The shell was lightly browned and so crispy. Not oily in the least. The salsa was a little better than any I've had at other places. My daughter had chicken nuggets and fries, which she finished. The beef in my meal was ground and seasoned nicely. I like that they don't completely rely on heat to season their meat. I really loved the food. Granted, I had the most typical dish, but comparatively speaking, it was phenomenal. I'd recommend it to anyone. They don't sell any adult beverages, but you can get a Coke in a glass bottle, which is pretty cool if you ask me. read more

I have eaten in local "los restaurantes" in Mexico border towns! Mexican food......I should say TRUE Mexican food is defined by the seasoning. It should be a flavor explosion in your mouth. (No rude comments please...lol) Hidalgo was just that. Upon a recommendation of a local friend who eats there weekly, we ordered carryout. I have fussy kids who rarely eat half a plate of Mexican food. They cleaned their plates and asked for more. My wife & kids had the beef tacos while I took on the steak "California Burrito". The seasoning on the steak was AMAZING!. Tacos were obviously mouthwatering according to my wife's constant moaning (Again....no comments!) and my kids begging for more. I had a side of Refried Beans. These are not typical as they are not mashed, but cooked and flavorful. Some may not like the beans because they're not mashed but I loved them. I will return tomorrow for their anniversary and probably weekly moving forward. If you re anywhere nearby....it is worth the drive.....behind the Dollar Store just south of downtown Belleville next to the RR tracks! read more

I have limited experience here - overall so I'm giving it 3 Stars for now - but the Tamales and Taco's we had were good. I'd would like more experience with other dishes to be sure. But, what we had was authentic. The salsa is homemade. The meat is pulled, the tamales are in corn husks. Listen - homemade Mexican is not that nasty Taco bell Gordita or supreme burrito most American's grow up on and claim to be "authentic" What is also important for me to express is the owners are great. They actually are working owners and they are truly friendly and great people. I had a chance to speak to them and they were great with my children too. Yeah - the place is tucked away off the road and a little uninspiring both inside and out. But, you have to consider the town and current economics. I would rather give my money to a small business and people who work hard and actually care - rather than Taco Hell. This is also Belleville - so you take what you get. Average looks do not necessarily mean poor food or service. In response to one post on here that was pretty negative - consider the source when you see the person has only written negative remarks on multiple businesses. The plate prices are about average. I don't recall going to many Mexican places that are not 7-8 dollars a plate. I will second the remark about the nickel and dime on the salsa and things like that. I don't care for that either and it does bother me. But, I can say there are a few other local Mexican eatery's that are charging for extra servings of chips and salsa - it appears to be the way things are going in the service industry. I will back any family owned business over some franchise any day. At least give this place a try once - and support those in the community you live. read more

Probably one of Belleville's best kept secrets. The food is excellent and the waitress (who I think may have been the owner that day) was do sweet and personable. The hibiscus water was soooo fantastic, I had two! I can't imagine anything being bad on their menu. While I was here, lots of people came in for carry out and all were treated like family. It's my new go-to spot for real, honest Mexican food. P.S. I was never into Toxic Bell unless it was 2:00 a.m. and I was a tad bit inebriated! We stopped in because a neighbor told us about the location. The restaurant is set up off the road so it's easy to pass by. Inside is very clean and bright. Waitresses were incredibly friendly. They have a wide variety of jarritos and mexican coke. My boyfriend got the chimi and I got the taquitos. Their quac is delicious. The taquitos were a little over fried and the chicken didn't have much flavor, but my boyfriend loved him chimi and jalepeno peppers. We didn't get margaritas this time, but will come back and try other options! read more

I had the enchilada dinner. I was not really thrilled with my meal. The salsa was freshly made, but I did not like it. The staff was pleasant and friendly. The restaurant has booths and tables a pleasant place to eat. Unfortunately, I would not return to this restaurant. The food just didn't pass my taste test. I would rather go to Dos Pesos. Perhaps their other items are better, but the salsa for me was not good and I didn't like the Spanish rice too much. I grew up in Mexican Village in Southwest Detroit. Ordering on a holiday is always a risk. It should be understood by all patrons that wait times are to be expected. However, how you handle your business during these times is very telling. Having people on walkie talkies does not help. I know this because I had three people with these walkie-talkies come up to me and ask me for my name and the car that I was driving. Continuing to take orders when you have a car leaving your parking lot every 10 minutes without their food does not not help. I know this because I was there for an hour and a half and left without my food. Not offering a discount or free item for a patrons extended wait time does not help. I know this because not one person was given anything extra and people even had to turn around to get silverware that was promised. This makes people tell others to not visit your establishment. I understand the desire to make profit but having food made that eventually gets thrown out is essentially you wasting money. I hope you do better, as your food is good and good Mexican is hard to find. read more

I am a long time Urbanspoon user and just got turned on to Yelp. I was just browsing the site and needed to rate/review my favorite Mexican restaurant. Hidalgo is by far the best authentic Mexican food around (including Mexican Town). The restaurant is super clean and staff is extremely friendly. My two favorites are Chilaquiles with steak (Mexican breakfast) or the steak fajitas with bacon and cheese! The Belleville boat is creeping up on my list of favorites. Don't be afraid to ask Chef Antonio for anything special you might like. He cooks with love and is a true artist in the kitchen. read more

As a huge Mexican food lover, this was not all that great. We went today for the first time today for a late lunch, we will not go back. When we walked in it was dark. Only maybe a third of the lights were on. It did seem clean however, just very blah looking. Decor is party streamers, blankets hung on wall, with sombres. It looked very cheap in there. There is cheap hand-made poster boards ALL OVER to show features. Menu has no pictures just list of items. Yes that is what a person wants to look at pages of words... Words don't look good enough to eat. Pictures speak to the tummy! Was the food nasty? No, but it was not good either. VERY BLAH. You get chips and salsa with your drink orders. Salsa is NOT GOOD. It is extra onion heavy. It is brownish in color with white onion chunks with more onion chunks and a lot of chilito. My son who is 11, would not touch it. Our waitress even said most kids do not like. Chips are normal tortilla chips, straight out of a bag. So they were the best part of the meal. I got the lunch platter (11-3pm $6.95) of chicken enchiladas, which comes with rice and beans. Chicken was soft but not much flavor. The sauce, you could tell that it was microwaved on my plate, or at least heated on my plate. It was baked onto the plate. Rice and beans were alright, but blah,han again must beans are just blah but (I did like that it actual, not refried beans) My son got the kids chicken taco, beans, rice. WAY TOO LETTUCE. Lettuce was chunked like you were eating a salad, in fact that is how my son called it, as all the taco fell out (which is a normal taco thing) He said he he didn't even know it had cheese on it, not because it was white (he knows real Mexican is a white cheese) but because there was very tiny amount of it on his. I never have had to "force" him to eat his Mexican. He too ate his beans, he used them to dip the tortilla chips in. The only good thing about this place, was that they were FAST, and FRIENDLY. Pros: The food is rather tasty. Their steak in the fajitas is always flavorful and not chewy like a lot of the steak in fajitas can be. The wait staff there is always friendly, and the food comes out hot and quick. Cons: They can be rather exspensive. A lot of thier sides do not come with the meal so there is a charge for them. They once tried to charge us 3 dollars for mushrooms and an additional 2 dollars for black olives. Make sure you ask how much any extras or add on item is as the price at the end will surprise you. read more

OUTSTANDING! Had to pick up hubby at the Metro Airport and turned to Yelp for a place near by to grab dinner. Very happy we stopped! The place was super clean.....nice decor. Carmen, our waitress was so friendly! She helped me pick out a vegetarian dish....which was so yummy. The salsa is fresh and you get mild or HOT. Trust me, It's HOT! I loved how as we were there.....a couple walked in and Carmen greeted them, asked if they wanted their usual and then confirmed it......within 10 minutes, she delivered it to their table. When someone eats here and formulates an opinion about the restaurant, it's important to know that this is one of maybe two Tex Mex restaurants in the area. Belleville isn't a place known for Mexican food and don't come here expecting an authentic experience otherwise you will be disappointed. However, when I come here for a lunch break between work hours and I'm craving tacos it's satisfying enough. The lunch specials are pretty good all around and the prices are great. one thing I do love about this place though is the staff is really nice and polite. And as a bonus if you really want an alcoholic beverage they do offer beer as well. Now despite the positives I have mentioned already the inside of the restaurant is a little boring and I've had much better food in similar establishments. But truthfully if this place was in Lincoln Park or Southwest Detroit where the competition is much stiffer it would easily get a 3/5. read more
