If you love authentic Mexican food, you need to come to Westland to check out Carlos Mexican Restaurant. This is a family favorite of ours and I recommend absolutely everything on the menu! The rice and beans are a flavorful staple. The staff are amazing and provide attentive service. The restaurant is cozy and perfect for dining in. I recommend doing their family meals for carry out, too. I really enjoyed the bean tostada lunch and think I need to head back for another one. There is a discount for using cash, but they do take cards. It is worth the trip even though the Wayne Road bridge is down and you have to go a mile away to go around. Not vegetarian friendly. I'm really disappointed with my first time eating here. I have been wanting to try the food here for a while. I was excited to see vegetarian options on the menu. Ive been trying to get my partner to try this place but he's loyal to another Mexican restaurant so he's been hesitant. I ordered the enchiladas suiza with mixed vegetables. One bite in and I was spitting out shreds of chicken & beef. I know most people wouldn't care but I'm vegetarian because of my beliefs and this was a big disappointment. The portion wasn't very generous for $15 and now I won't be eating any of it. I rarely ever get take out because I can't afford it in this economy. Stopped in to support them because the bridge on Wayne is closed and we wanted to give them a shot. Haven't been here since the ownership change. We were greeted with smiling faces and explained we were ordering takeout. I ordered the King Burrito and my Fiancé got the Chimichanga. We also ordered the churros that had strawberry filling. The King Burrito was good, I got mine with the pork. Ranchera sauce on top was different than I am used to, but still good. Some of the pork pieces had a little too much fat attached for my liking. Very large burrito. My Fiancés Chimichanga was not good. She got the steak, which was cut in to small cubes. It was very overcooked, chewy and many pieces had gristle on them. The rice and beans that came with it were good. The strawberry filled churros were very good, and the dipping sauce was very good as well. My last experience here was terrible. The salsa was watery, it took forever for the waitress to even get to us for water. The food was nasty and the flan was burnt on the bottom. Save your money and go somewhere else where they don't skimp on ingredients and quality food. read more

It was lunch time so I was hungry but they definitely shorted me on my tacos. I was looking for the crispy fried tacos and i definitely couldn't tell they were fried at all. The food was bland, meats dry steak over cooked despite the request of how to make it. The worst of all was the veggie Mexican pizza lacked flavor. Largely cut carrot rounds, zucchini, broccoli and cauliflower all tasted boiled topped with cheese. Not what you'd expect from a Mexican pizza or restaurant. I had their strawberry guava drink and it was so delicious. Their Guacamole was tasty with a hint of lime as did my steak fajita which made it even more amazing! Her phone was too engrossing for her to care about our experience. They were not busy at all... We were the ONLY TABLE. This is completely within her control and inexcusable. Don't let the old reviews stop you from coming here. I wasn't coming, myself, for a long time. We started visiting Carlos' regularly, 20 years ago or more. We loved the place, and ate there regularly. We were so disappointed, when the place changed hands. The food wasn't 'bad', but it was bland. We tried again, and it was the same. We never went back. We've been going to Mexicantown, ever since. Today, seeing it was still open, we tried Carlos' again, after several years. We were very happy to find that the food was really tasty! I had three street tacos: asada, chorizo, and pollo, with beans and rice. Everything was delicious! My wife ordered a combo plate with a chimichanga, tostada, beans and rice. She said she was happy with everything, as well! It's a small, modest, family place, with good food. The service was good, and the people seem very nice. They're doing a great job! Chips and salsa are amazing, lunch portions are huge, steak and chicken authentic tacos are tasty. The queso was the best around. We will be returning to try their churro ice cream dessert! Avoid! This place has some big problems and I won't be coming back. The menu prices are way off and you will not know what you are going to be charged until you get your bill. The menu says $10.50 for the combo and they charge you $13.50. When you complain they point out the small sign that they had a small price increase. Alert - $3 per item is not a small increase. If felt totally ripped off by at least $12 in overcharges when I got the bill. They charge $1.50 for chips and salsa for a half full basket. Some tables did get full baskets, but not me and I still had to pay the $1.50 for my little small half filled basket. The $18 fajitas were not fajitas at all! It was just some dried out meat slices and a few pepper slices that aren't really fajitas, aren't sizzling, and aren't even served on a skillet. They are called sizzling fajitas but they should be called yesterday's dried non sizzling meat on a plate. I sent this nasty dish back as soon as she brought it to the table - I told her that it didn't look the fajitas in the picture and don't fit any definition of fajitas that I have ever had. I wish I took a picture to show how bad it was. They charged $1.75 for a small 4 ounce serving of pico. Yes the little tiny small condiment cup for $1.75. Another ripoff for 2 tablespoons of salsa. They didn't tell us we were getting charged this either. Soda is bought by the can. As for food quality, I like hole in the wall places, but this food is just basic blah Mexican. Low quality flavors and the meats that are bland, not juicy or do not appear very freshly made. You can get much better flavors and way fresher and way better prepared Mexican food at Moe's or Chipotle. There are so many better Mexican food places in the Westland area. Pass on this place if you want a fun Mexican food experience and don't want to feel stupid for the prices you paid for real subpar Mexican food. read more

Carlos always has terrific specials for their delicious food! We drove from Dearborn to Westland to get carryout this weekend. They were doing a special on several different items. We have also eaten in the restaurant pre-Covid. My Mom regularly gets their food. You will never be disappointed by their street tacos! Maybe we caught them on an off night, but the service was almost entirely horrible when we visited. Most of the employees were just hanging around looking surly. The one girl who was trying to help people was completely swamped. There were several other parties of guests there either waiting to be seated or waiting to pick up carry-out orders, but none of the other employees did anything to help. Maybe it wasn't their job, but they could at least have been polite and done something besides give sour looks to the one working employee and all of the waiting guests. This Mexican food is the best you'll find outside of Mexicantown, and gives most of those restaurants a run for their money! We've been here several times; the service is always friendly and fast, the homemade salsa and chips come right to your table, and the food is fresh, flavorful, and made with care. It's just a little unassuming place, but trust me, you'll be happy you chose this family-owned place instead of one of those horrible Tex-Mex chains. We came here for the first time tonight. The fried tacos were really good done the way I like them! My husband got enchiladas and the sauce over them wasn't very good. It tasted like plain tomato sauce. The rice was just okay and same with the refried beans. The salsa and chips are really good. The best salsa I have ever had at a Mexican restaurant. First off let me say, the service was AMAZING! Juan seemed like he was the only server on staff and he was kicking butt! Friendly, helpful, and super quick. The food however, was so so. The chips we received with our "chips and salsa" were stail. The salsa that they brought out wasn't very good at all. However, when we asked for a "hotter" salsa it was MUCH better. We got the botana to split, it was good. The tacos I got for dinner were bland, but the flautas my boyfriend got for dinner were excellent. This place makes me think of a mexican coney island. It's basically a greasy spoon that doesn't serve breakfast, hotdogs, or gyros. Instead, they swapped those out for fajitas, enchiladas, and burritos. It's in a strip mall and is just as good, if not better, when eaten as take-out. That seems like it would have to be the definition of a Mexican coney island. There are a few other places that set the bar a bit high for me to put this place up there with them, but they are definitely worth trying out.
