I've gotten takeout and dinned in multiple times and it's always a 10/10. This is definitely some of the best Mexican food in the area. Their steak tacos are always loaded and flavorful with their green and red salsa! Ive also had multiple different horchatas in the area and they have my favorite one by far. I've tried bites of other people's food and it's always very good. Even their Coca Cola is crisp! The service is beyond amazing; this time we had Claudia and she was so thoughtful, patient, and kind. I hope she is praised as an employee for how amazing she is! The ambiance is beautiful and full of Mexican culture and I absolutely love it here! Please note, you cannot turn south out of the driveway onto Carpenter Road. Ok now onto the important part. This is a former Pizza Hut. It still looks a little like a Pizza Hut, just with typical decorations of a Mexican restaurant. They have a full bar but I didn't try any of the drinks. I ordered a carry out of chicken fajitas. Came with a little guacamole, sour cream, tomatoes and lettuce. It was pretty average. Nothing bad but nothing spectacular. I used to live in Ypsilanti when I was a student at Eastern Michigan, and then got an apartment on this side of town for my first two jobs out of school. I know the area well, and remember it "way back when" when stuff was different. This used to be a pizza hut if I remember correctly, and obviously it's not there anymore. I see it's become a Mexican restaurant! I needed something quick and didn't want fast food. So, I pulled in here on a Sunday morning on my way home from a weekend away and decided to check this place out. Walking in, I remember what it was like before, and some of the place's been updated. Some of it hasn't. Not a bad deal, but I swear the booths are in very rough shape. Like still Pizza Hut booths. The one I sat in was half destroyed and had no cushion or support left at all. The seating here could use a serious update, no joke. Anyway, there was hardly anyone here, so I was able to get my food almost right away. I scoured the menu and decided to go with their nachos. I guess they come with both beef and shredded chicken. I've never had both, so that was interesting. When it came out it was actually quite good. The chips and salsa were good, but the salsa seemed a bit bland to me. My server was cool and made sure I was good throughout my meal. Overall a decent experience overall. The place just needs a refresh on the inside with the seats, but the foods a okay. read more

Being so close to where, I live finally got to try this place that took over Pizza Hut. Service was very good, the atmosphere has that old Mexican restaurant vibe from the 80's and 90's. They bring you complimentary chips and salsa, the chips tasted store bought but were warm, pretty average. The salsa was the typical gringo salsa added some hot habanero sauce that was at the table a definite improvement. The street style tacos combo came with rice and refried beans and two salsa's one verde and a hotter red salsa, these two salsas were much better and more authentic than the salsa served with the chips. I tried the chorizo, pastor, and asada tacos. They were all good, but I have had better asada and pastor in Ypsilanti (La Torre). The salsas help these tacos, I do like the softness of their corn tortillas the combo was three tacos rice and beans for $15 a pretty good value when you consider everything you get. May want to order these tacos and wait to eat the chips with these salsas. read more

El Tapatio is a great new option for a local Mexican restaurant with a great dine in experience. This part of town doesn't have a ton of non-chain restaurant options so it was great to see a new option enter the food. There's tons of indoor seating and they have an excellent menu, but the icing on the cake is the speed of service. The food is pretty standard fare and I'd give it 4 stars, but I'd give the speed of service 6 stars if I could. I kid you not, it was less than 10 minutes between when we ordered and received our food. It beats out some popular fast food restaurants! I'd absolutely recommend El Tapatio --it's a fantastic dining experience and definitely worth a try! read more

Warning. Verbose, as I want to counter some of the bad reviews i read. Food was very good. I'd write home about the queso dip and the beef taco in the hard shell, which is what I chose for my light lunch. No weird taco seasoning in the beef -- just beef. Fresh lettuce, tomato, and grated cheese came on it. Fresh lettuce and tomato plus sour cream with the chicken quesadilla my friend ordered. Nice presentation. Looked like shredded chicken and had no cheese inside like I'd expect. She said it was very tasty. She is a very picky and light eater, but ate more than half of it, so i feel like that's saying something. Wish I'd taken a pic. Decent chips and salsa -- not sure either were made in-house, but we each ate a decent patch of batch of chips. Guac was amazing when they first opened, because it was 3+ fresh with few additives. But the next time I ate there, it tasted and looked the grocery store kind. They said they no longer served the minimalist kind... Regarding ambience and the comments about being a leftover Pizza Hut appearance, there is completely new decor. Amazing colors and what looks like original artwork, although the tables and chair backs are clearly mass produced. Comfy seating, all new. JEverything is very bright and cheerful. The music is authentic, and it is just the right level as to be enjoyable, but it does not interfere with conversation. Decent place, nice food, good people, Good ambience. Parking is plenty plentiful. Access remains a problem with the ongoing construction out front. I believe the excavation is being performed with spoons! it is taking so long! A very bright garden of sun flowers and zinnias, plus ornamental grasses is defying the drab of incessant construction. I will definitely return to this place and recommended it to others. read more

Been wanting to check this place out since it opened. Pretty typical Mexican restaurant. The layout inside is kind of weird. Our server was great- wish I had gotten her name. The food was pretty good. Loved the salsa but the chips could have been salted a bit more. The cheese sauce on my chimichangas was delicious. I appreciated that the beef in them was shredded, not ground. The ground beef on my boyfriend's tostada and taco was pretty greasy. I liked the rice a lot. The margarita I ordered was pretty weak. That would be my only complaint. Will come back and try it again. read more

Salsa and pico de gallo are amazing. Food is really good too. Kids meals are huge. You should reduce the amount of food on the kids meals and serve it with a kids size drink with a lid. $2.99 is a bit much for a large drink for toddlers. You may want to find a sitter for your kids. Give this new place a chance. Authentic Mexican food is worth it. read more

My boyfriend is obsessed with the carnitas so much that we went out in one of the massive snow storms this year just to get it. I knew that this restaurant had opened in the former Pizza Hut location during the summer (it apparently opened August 2022). This was the first time that we stopped by for dinner. We were quite surprised. Though we arrived early in the evening, it wasn't busy but quickly filled up with patrons. The salsa along with the tortilla chips were quite good.
