I see many glowing reviews regarding the food and beverages this place has to offer, I wish I got to try them! We walked in here off the street seeing that they were playing a World Cup game and figured we'd pop in for lunch and a couple drinks. We walked in and nobody was around to seat us so we figured we'd settle ourselves in the patio area. There were two groups out here and a server had entered the patio area couple times and saw us but didn't speak to us. We assumed they were preoccupied and waited. 15 minutes passed and we weren't spoken to, handed menus, offered water - nothing! At one point I stood to look into the restaurant and two servers were chatting and we were in their line of sight! We stood up to leave but hovered for a minute in case they noticed so they would come to us but they just stared. We turned and left. I came in here for a quick bite before catching my Amtrak train across the street. The girl working the counter was so friendly and helpful as I tried to figure out what I wanted to eat. I really wanted tacos and she steered me towards the fish tacos and said they were enough on their own because I was also considering a soup on the side. She also showed me where the water was because she saw my giant water bottle. Just very attentive. I wish I had caught her name. But thank you!! Food came out pretty quickly, maybe 15 minutes or so. It's meaty and it has all the right spices and seasonings and it tastes amazing on the fries. And I don't like steak but I do like to get the steak frites here. The steak is tender and it's seasoned well. I never have pieces stuck in my teeth because it's too dry or anything like that. The people who work here are always so nice and they are always accommodating and willing to help you out. I love sitting inside. I love sitting outside. They have little things for the tables. This hidden little place is a great find. I work right down the street and had no idea it was here(across the street from 7-11). I went in by myself for lunch and had the French dip. Weird and easy fix, label water. Even better the staff when I ordered and asked for water should have suggested where the cups were and where the dispenser is. There seems to be a lot of staff but nothing being efficient or friendly. A gentleman sitting next to me was waiting for a to go. It was near the register. He was also drinking a beer. The staff announced the name. The customer said here. The staff just stood there instead of bringing it over the three steps. Customer said do u want the to come over. Grudgingly the staff with a smirk on face walked over with the meal. There are no table runners. Thus, if food is ready and there is a customer at the register paying or ordering, the food sits at the counter until the line goes away. Strange! I completed my order and waited over 30 minutes! This is lunch - actually after - and folks need to get back to work. In fact others that ordered after me got their meal! Wow! I live in the neighborhood - won't recommend this place at all. Let's talk tipping. I don't want to tip until AFTER service. I paid at time of order and before my food. So, I don't tip!. Too often I tip and the food and service did not warrant the amount I left. I was here during Comic Con weekend. Let me just start by saying that the beers and ciders on tap are amazing. Try the peanut butter cup beer...it was outta this world! The food? Not so much. I had the shrimp tacos. They were meh. There was an altercation on the patio between some customers. A dude that works there (I wish I got his name) stopped the argument, threw out a guy, and then chastised ALL of the customers on the patio, as if the rest of us had anything to do with the altercation. Dude, we're not children! Here's the real kicker though. When I went to pay up, I asked for a receipt. The same dude that had previously yelled at customers to behave was at the register, told me there was no printer, and that he couldn't give me a receipt. I refused to give my email or phone number for said receipt. So then the dude yelled at me and told me to get out of his restaurant. Problem is, it is not HIS restaurant! I wanted to give my server a cash tip while still at the register. I tapped her on the arm to get her attention, and the dude screamed at me to not touch his employees. Again, NOT his restaurant! I gave the sweet woman server a $10 tip on a $30 tab, to save her from the embarrassment of her coworker. I then went back to the owner who was watching all of this go on, and I informed him that whoever this dude was working for him was outta control, needed some conflict training and that he can't just throw people out of a restaurant because they ask for a receipt with their credit card purchase. So I went home and googled the California law on receipts for purchases from retail establishments. And whoop, there it is: California law mandates that businesses provide receipts for certain transactions. Under California Civil Code 1747.02, any credit card transaction--whether in person, online, or over the phone--must generate a receipt. This applies to both goods and services, ensuring consumers have a record of their purchases. Additionally, the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) requires receipts for taxable sales to track sales tax compliance. For cash transactions, receipts are generally expected upon request. In industries such as retail, hospitality, and automotive repair, they serve as proof of purchase and are necessary for returns, warranties, and disputes. California law limits the personal information businesses can include on receipts to protect against identity theft and fraud. So the dude BROKE THE LAW by not giving me a receipt. I feel bad for the owner, as he was a nice guy, but yes, I am going to report this to the proper authorities on Monday. Here's the info on the penalties: Businesses that fail to comply with California's receipt laws face legal and financial consequences. Under Civil Code 1747.08(e), violations of restrictions on printed credit card information can result in statutory damages of up to $1,000 per violation, even if no actual harm occurs. This has led to numerous class action lawsuits against companies that negligently expose consumer data. State regulatory agencies can also impose fines or sanctions on businesses that repeatedly violate receipt regulations. The CDTFA has the authority to audit businesses that fail to provide accurate receipts for taxable sales. My family and I stopped by for a meal before hopping back on the train home at Santa Fe station. We're so glad we did. We each had a different item. One thing that immediately stood out was the warm hospitality and service by the manager, who quickly sold me on the French Dip sandwich (Special). My wife had the Greek salad with chicken and commented it was among one of the best she's had, daughter had their burger and son had the flat bread (pizza). I will say the French dip sandwich was amazing, the beef seasoned and cooked to perfection to its variantion/take on the concept. The beef was like a variation of ropa vieja/machaca /shredded beef juicy and flavorful. A must try if it's available. My son, a frenchfry connoisseur, said the fries were top notch and his flatbread really good. I came here for lunch while on jury duty. It is in an extremely convenient location just three blocks west of the central courthouse - at the corner of C Street and India. I was surprised there wasn't a wait. Walked straight to the register. You order at the register and your food is brought to your table. I received my order in 15 minutes. It was a windy day so I chose to sit inside. The ambiance feels like you are out at an park with an industrial feel. The booths are extremely comfortable with a thick but soft huge backing. On the other hand, the high top bar seating does not look too comfy as the seats do not have a full backing. The restaurant doesn't have too large of a capacity - estimating 30 people can fit inside while maybe 40 outside. The trolley line is adjacent to the restaurant. It is very evident when it comes by as the vibration can be felt underneath you. The loud pop music helps to deter the noise. I ordered the fig jam flatbread. I wasn't expecting the balsamic and pears on top but it was a great addition to the fig jam, goat cheese, arugula and prosciutto. Be warned that it is messy to eat. The long sprigs of arugula will end up all over your face. I chose to eat the flatbread with my fingers so they did turn yellow brown. The flatbread is a fairly good size. It is cut into five pieces making it easier to handle. I wish there was more goat cheese and fig jam. The cheese was lightly sprinkled on the top and the fig jam was lightly spread on the bottom. With the arugula, I feel like I was partially eating a salad. I enjoyed it. The price is a little higher for lunch but given the quality and taste of my food, cleanliness and location of the restaurant, comfortable seating, lively music, I would pay the amount again.
