I just finished my meal after ordering take-out. I had such a pleasant experience, from ordering over the phone (Matt P is a gem) to picking it up, just great. We ordered the karrage, crispy rice w/ spicy tuna, wagyu maki, yubi, HanHan, and the miso cod roll. Everything was fantastic. The karrage is a must get and we will order it again the next time we go. It's crispy and rather light for being fried. The same goes for the Crispy Rice w/ spicy tuna. These are two great appetizers. As for the rolls, everything was great. The fish tasted fresh and flavorful. I have nothing but good things to say about any of the rolls that we ordered. I can't wait to go back for their omekase experience. Overall, very happy with today's lunch. I would recommend it, especially if in Skan. It's away from the main road and has its own parking (big plus). The interior, while small, it's pretty nice. I would definitely want a seat at the sushi bar when I return. Again, great experience and I'd recommend visiting. read more

We went to Hidden Fish for their prix fixe Valentine's lunch. The restaurant is decorated in that clean, simple, almost minimal style I think of as Japanese. My husband got a Sapporo Black and I had the house iced tea.... beautifully flavored with mint and yuzu.We started with shrimp toast, not the traditional deep fried kind....but a lovely, lightly toasted piece of bread with chopped shrimp, whole grain Dijon mustard, sundried tomato and capers. It was a small but delicious bite. The next course we had Asian Caesar salad - grilled romaine with sesame dressing and toasted panko. It was crispy with a smokey flavor that was very good with the sesame dressing...the panko giving that extra little crunch. I especially loved the Fluke served in a fennel butter sauce with fried capers. I had three pieces of Nigiri as an add-on. Salmon, Striped Jack and Waygu. Incredible taste on all the pieces. The fluke was perfectly cooked, a little crispness, soft and flaky and the butter sauce and capers went so well with the fish. For dessert we had black sesame cheesecake with vanilla ice cream and sweet potato underneath. It sounds odd, but I really enjoyed it because of the subtle flavors that blended so well and it wasn't super sweet. The service from Navi was excellent from beginning to end. From taking our order to refilling water, checking if everything was good and answering my questions about different items. I'm looking forward to my next visit to try some items off the menu. read more

Came across Hidden Fish while visiting family in New York, and OH. MY. GOSH. What a hidden gem in the cutest little lake town you've ever seen. I'm here with my hubby (we left the kids back in ATL because this mama needed a break!!), and this dinner was exactly what I needed. First of all, let's talk about the crispy spicy tuna appetizer. DELECTABLE. I don't use that word lightly. It was fresh, crunchy, flavorful- basically everything sushi dreams are made of. We also shared a few rolls (because I believe in trying a little bit of everything when it comes to sushi): The Yubi Roll: perfection, The California Roll: classic and done RIGHT, The Kinoko Roll: I wasn't sure what to expect but ended up obsessed. Now let's get to the real star of the evening, Gabby, our waitress. A literal ray of sunshine. Friendly, patient, knowledgeable, and totally on top of everything. She made the whole experience even more enjoyable. The vibe was elevated but still cozy, and you can tell the staff actually cares. We love the food. Very high quality. We did go there every other week. The problem is the service and the prices. Freddy, the waiter, can't poor anything without spilling it all over the table. This is the latest of four restaurants opened by the same family in the same tiny village, who seem to care more about making money than making a memorable dining experience. Hidden Fish has marketed itself as an upscale, elevated restaurant with special attention to detail. Well, almost. A first impression when we ate there recently is that the cheap, mass-produced chopsticks used in Asian take-out restaurants don't really reflect that self-described elevated image. The tiny space is lovely - dimly lit and cozy. We ordered some sushi rolls along with other entree dishes. The food we had was well prepared, the servings were small, but the prices were reasonable (except for the ridiculously overpriced wagyu takaki, which was delicious but with a silly pricetag for the serving size). We were seated at the bar (even though we had a reservation and there were many empty tables the whole time we were there), and our bartender/server was friendly and knowledgeable, if a bit overwhelmed. Feeling bad for the wait staff really shouldn't be part of a good restaurant experience. During our visit, there were just a handful of fellow diners, along with a very small staff who seemed harried while they each did double duty (greeting and seating customers, tending bar, taking and delivering food orders, bussing tables, all done by the same three very young workers). Service was slow, but that's what can happen when a place is understaffed. We left asking ourselves, who was in charge there? And does an upscale restaurant really need to charge their customers $2.00 for two additional (tiny) crostini to enjoy the remaining broth in an order of mussels? It's not a big enough issue to contest when paying the bill, but should it even really be a thing? While there are not a lot of sushi restaurants in the central New York region, there are certainly better ones. Here's hoping Hidden Fish will smooth out the kinks - we'll wait before we visit again. read more

They're still in a soft open, no take out, and some limitations. it's also quite well hidden. Google maps has it in the right spot, then after walking through the front door, going down the stairs, and take a left. The restaurant is then surprisingly spacious, once you find it. They do end up fully booked, so make sure that you have reservations well ahead of time, especially for the busy nights. I would expect their availability to open up a bit once they're fully open. I didn't get to try any of the food, but the place looked nice, and the staff was quite friendly. read more

This was my first visit to Hidden Fish - it will not be my last. As a Skaneateles resident, I knew that this new sushi restaurant was in the works, but with little (or no) advertising it opened to nightly "full houses." I had been trying to get a table for over a month and finely got one (two seats at the bar at 5:15) on a Thursday - everything else was booked until 8:30. The gentleman next to me said, "I have also been trying for over a month, and I know the owner." It was well worth the wait. Yes, it is hidden, and I think parking may be a problem, but the entire evening was fabulous. Greeted by smiling staff members - we actually held the back door open for the chef and a helper as they carried in large boxes of fresh fish - we were promptly seated at the bar. The restaurant is attractively decorated - but NOT with overstated Asian accents that you see in many sushi restaurants. I am guessing it only seats about 50 people - thus the hard time getting a table. My date had never had Sake and the waitress brought her several samples to try. The cocktail menu is extensive, and the mixologist is an artist. The true artist and the joy from sitting at the bar is being able to watch the chef create our dinner. I never carry my phone into anyplace with me, but next time I might just to take a picture of his "artwork." We shared the crawfish spring roll, the scallop aioli zen, and the soft shell symphony (fabulous). The couple next to us had three other menu choices delivered to them just as we were leaving, and they were so artfully presented that we had to ask what they were. Was so excited to try this restaurant it took 3 hours... not 2... 3 HOURS to get our food. And not to mention even our drinks took almost an hour to get. We were a group of 5 but the restaurant was only about 50% full. We asked multiple times where our food was and were told it would be out in 5 min then proceeded to wait over an hour. After sitting for three hours and ordering minimal food ... the manager decided to take one drink off our tab. This could be a great place. I'm so disappointed. Very long wait, food comes out one plate at a time in 20 minute increments, so it took almost two hours to get all of our food and we didn't even order much. We had to have a reservation for a mostly empty restaurant. And the one guy making the food couldn't keep up. It is trying way to hard to be way too fancy that it takes away from the idea that we are there because we are hungry, not to show off how fancy we think we are. Could overhear employees talking about being over worked and underpaid while the place wasn't even busy. We were very excited to try this place and left extremely disappointed. Absolutely fantastic dining experience overall. Transported me back to some of my favorite, Japanese owned, more intimate spots in NYC. The sushi was impeccable. Visiting sushi chef Quino was a delight (as were all the staff.). His omakase was thoughtfully selected and presented after a brief discussion regarding my preferences. I have been lamenting the lack of authenticity and quality in the area's sushi offerings for years. Each and every time I have dined at a new sushi establishment in CNY I have been woefully disappointed. Until last night. I havent been this excited about a restaurant since my first visit to Yasuda in NYC. I wish Hidden Fish the best of success. I look forward to dining there again, and again. This is a new restaurant to Skaneateles and long awaited. We like to support our village and shop and dine often so we waited 10 days to get a reservation. The service was sub par and all we got were apologies. Our sever was lovely, however. Once seated you are presented with a cellophane fish to put in your palm to tell you what drink you should have.... Don't fall for it. The drinks are $18 and 3-4 sips at best. They are pretty though. Took over 5 minutes to fill our water glass and 10 to get our very over priced drinks. The food did not come out in "order" and two out of five were sent back, too salty. We never send food back! The food we sent back was not taken off our bill either until we pointed it out. In addition the lighting and seating made it feel like we were in a cafeteria. We will not go back, sadly read more
