The hair stylist did a terrible job cutting my hair. I showed her a photo of hair with layers, but she proceeded to cut my hair straight...most stylists taper my hair as I have puffy hair. I've rarely had a stylist give me blunt straight cut; I think a good stylist knows this. I had to ask her to cut layers towards the end when it became clear that she wasn't going to actually do it. She also did not ask me which hair parting I preferred (normally hair stylists ask me). Just assumed it was left even though I prefer center part. Another complaint I have is the laziness with which she blew dry my hair. She made a comment saying I should get straight hair perm...did I ask? It's not an excuse to do a crap job at blowdrying your client's hair. Overall, I don't recommend this place. I'm surprised that they have over 4 stars on here. I previously had a very good experience getting my haircut here, 5 stars. So I'm really disappointed to say I did not enjoy my hair colouring experience. I showed the inspo and confirmed I want a cool color - ash with cool/lavender undertones. They confirmed saying they're going to tone it purple...it was a long process, 5 hours. And my hair came out super yellow/warm. I tried ask if they could fix it and the response was that my hair undertones were warm so this is just the result. I wish they offered to fix it.. I asked 3x if there was any way I can get it cooler (this was not a cheap experience either $350 before tip) and they just said they could either dye it darker or I would have to come back for another round of highlights. I don't really understand how a request for cool colors just resulted in a warm auburn one. They could've said in the begining that my hair was not apt for a cool color but instead kept saying they could do it and then in the end pretended I had asked for a warm color the whole time?! With tip I ended spending over $400 and am disappointed it was not close to any of the inspo pics I showed. read more

I've been getting my hair cut at Hidy for +5 years now and I've been very satisfied with my experience here. Everyone on the staff is very friendly, professional, and accommodating. I highly recommend Mirha--not only is she very skilled, but she also has a great sense for recommending personalized adjustments and changes to your cut (e.g. suggesting a slightly shorter cut during the summer after I mentioned that I sweat a lot). Parking Tip (as of writing this review): Make sure to have coins on hand since street parking in this area can be a little weird. I live in Manhattan and commute 1.5 hours both ways just to get my hair done here. The owner is incredibly sweet and hilarious, and she knows exactly what she's doing. I came here alone my first time about a year ago, and she made me feel very welcomed and comfortable, providing a short yet effective consultation before bleaching, coloring and cutting my hair, which turned out gorgeous. The male stylist is also very talented; he cut my hair during my most recent visit and I am SO happy with how it turned out!!!! The reason why I commute so far to come here is because the price is so reasonable as well, even with a generous tip (which I always give bc they always deserve). The salon is owned by husband and wife and I wish I had either one of them to cut my hair. Because it was my first time there I didn't know who was who, I made an appointment and they gave me Jimmy. (It appears that any non-Korean speaking customers go to Jimmy). Jimmy is a nice guy, but he is young, which also means less experienced. I could tell by seeing how he was cutting my hair, very slowly and carefully and it took him an hour when the owner had finished 2 customers during that same time. I so very much wanted to ask one of the owners as they seemed more experienced but at the same time I didn't want to seem rude to Jimmy, so I went along with it, and boy I regret for not following my instinct. I drove almost 4 hours (back and forth) to this place and I got a less than satisfactory haircut, with one side of my hair being uneven (looked inward) than the other side. With the tip I still paid about $60, but it was the amount of time / distance I drove to this place that got me really upset, all that effort for a bad hair cut. Word of advice for the owners, try to ask customers who they prefer when making an appointment, explain that Jimmy is the less experienced one, don't automatically give non-Korean speakers to Jimmy. I wish I had the choice of going with one of the owners and I would've been happy to wait for them or pay a little more for a more professional haircut. read more

Jay and Jenny are power couple managing this place. Their stylists also rock as well as the ladies in charge of the wash especially one of the latter gives me a combo massage. Jay got serious skills for haircuts and Heejin for balayage. I've been coming here for maybe 5 years now and I would say it's one of my happy places. Had more than positively exceeding experiences here at Hidy Hair. I've gotten a straight perm, perm, and hair cut here and never been disappointed. Previously my straight perm lasted up to a year and a few months and I've gotten a regular curly perm which has also lasted me a year. Received a lot of compliments for my perm and found that my perm held up and consistently maintained its shape. Again this is my own experience and note all hair textures vary and differ when it comes to any type of perm or treatment. My stylist is Mirha and she is talented and extremely skilled with cutting and styling hair. She's also so sweet, takes her time, and has a good eye for detail. She's the one who did my perm back in October which currently is still looking great now! I would recommend checking Hidy Hair if you're looking for a new hair salon or need a new stylist. Mirha listens and doesn't try to take control over what you want for your hair. I've had times where I felt as if I didn't have any control or say over what I wanted especially in terms of my haircut. She also provided me with styling tips and gave me a quick tutorial and how to style my hair with a blow dryer. She's been super kind and sweet every visit and makes the experience incredibly comfortable. The salon took extra precaution with the current situation (required masks, took temperature, sanitized styling chair). This salon gave me the worst haircut I've had in a longest time. I wanted a simple layered haircut that was only up to my shoulders but the lady gave me a bob cut to my chin instead. I also said I wanted full bangs but she cut a portion of my hair which sits awkwardly to the side of my face. Never once did she ask where I part my hair and instead parted it where she wanted to. She didn't even blow dry my hair properly and my hair looked like a flat less pancake afterwards. For $45 I would expect more professional results but I've gotten better results at a salon school for $10. Tried out Hidy based on the good reviews. Showed up half an hour early for my appointment and they took me early. Probably helped that I did not have a specific request for a stylist. I'm the type of girl that just wants to look good with minimal maintenance. I didn't get my stylist's name, but she spent about an hour on my hair, trimming and layering - even had me stand up at one point so she can check the ends and work on it more meticulously. I like that she didn't rush through my cut, even though it's very basic compared to other requests. Only bummer is that I was growing out my bangs because I didn't want to trim them anymore, so I told her not to touch them, but she cut them anyway. I'm just going to chalk that one up to miscommunication. About $50 for cut and wash, blow-dry, tax and tip. Pretty happy with the place and will try it again. read more

After months of magic straight perm and steam perm for curling on bottom part of my hair, I noticed that the bottom part of my hair was getting very dry. If you have hair problems, Jay2 has an answer for you. He recommended that I get "Ruby" hair treatment. Sounds odd, right? He explained that it's some sort of purified water?? that's suppose to make your hair super soft. It's been week 3 and my hair is still in perfect shape. None of that dry hair. Please do not go if you want a decent haircut and perm. With COVID, I did not go to my usual hair salon in the city. My sister saw the reviews and recommend this place since it is near my house. Last Saturday, I showed the picture of the hairstyle I wanted and asked them to pick the stylist who can do it. Unfortunately, I made a huge error believing them. The issues I have are: 1. The hair cut is messy with uneven layerings. The ends of my hair looks damaged after the cut. Note, I never dyed my hair my whole life so it is very healthy. 2. The perm. I asked for a little tighter perm than picture but she made it so tight that I have curls up to my roots; it was supposed to be wavy perm. And the chemicals seems to have damaged my hair and some strands on the back left corner of my head is gone; that area feels like short beard.... 3. The style overall is not even close to what I showed in the picture. The stylist looked at the picture twice for short moment and started doing my hair so quickly, almost rushed. I should've known but I wanted give a benefit of the doubt and waited till I take the first shower after the perm. And wow, I've never had such a bad hair cut and perm done in my life. And please note, I get my hair done at least 3 times a year and drastically change my hairstyle. Please heed my warnings and don't go. If you want to go, just do trimming and nothing more. Oh, my mother got her hair done too. She bleached her hair but her roots are still black. So don't bleach and/or dye your hair here. Please. I had previously colored my hair with Heejin, but I got my hair straightened this time with Miyoung. They are both very good. My hair came out straight and very soft and smooth. I appreciated the extra effort and concern Miyoung showed for the dry damaged part of my hair- giving protein treatment to those parts prior to the magic straight. Two thumbs up! I still need to color my roots, but I'm pleased with the results today. I would give both Miyoung and Heejin 5 stars, but as far as the price goes, it's a little bit on the higher side than I would like (causing me to lower one star). It's probably a month after Jay (the owner) cut my hair and I still love the cut and the compliments I get on the cut. Another place that I just found out about through my sister and her friend that I kick myself for not coming to sooner. Jay gets my hair ... he took the time to assess it both wet and dry. I was a little scared that he was cutting too many layers but my hair looks fuller and is much more manageable now. He cut the layers underneath and my hair still has that long flowy look. $40 .... bargain! His assistant Miyoung (sp?) is very sweet and will finish your appointment with a styling (so plan on coming here before going out!). We booked a couple weeks in advance so that we could get back to back appointments for my 3 yo niece, sis (highlights) and me. There are parking meters out front so bring quarters. The staff at Hidy offered to put quarters in the meters while we were in the chairs, which I thought was really nice. There is a Dunkin Donuts next door for iced coffee. I am debating whether or not to get a digital perm, but if I do, I will get it done at Hidy. I like this place a lot. read more

The only haircut I was ever happy with. This is my second time with Jae (whom I believe is the owner). I've gone to many, many hair salons. This is the only place where I feel like I'm being taken care of. Jae cut my hair, I had 3 people blow drying, and then afterwords, I had Jae and another help straighten my hair. The cut lasted for over an hour. I felt like a work of art in process. Jae is a perfectionist who knows his craft. It's a $50 haircut, but I would pay more than double for the cut I get. He's the only person where I can say, I got the haircut I wanted. My only qualm is, I want to work out after my haircut and I feel like it's such a waste to put it up in a ponytail. Long story short, he explained that I would be wasting my money and that I would be 100% dissatisfied with the results. I came to Hidy for the first time based on a tip from a total stranger who had a fabulous hairstyle. When I arrived, I met Jay. As other reviewers mentioned, he's a hair savior- I couldn't agree more! Jay first looked at my hair- up close, from a far, standing up, kneeling down. This guy knows what he's doing. He first cut my hair dry, then it was washed, blow dried, then cut some more. I had to get my roots colored (pesky white hair!), did a ash balayage, toned my previous orange tinted ends and got a trim. She even washed my hair an extra time to get the right tint in my hair. I've gone to get my hair cut by Jay three times so far. Previous to Jay, I had gone to the same hair stylist since middle school. When he moved to Korea, I had no idea where to go. I was a lost puppy with flat hair and crazy split ends. Then I remembered my hair stylist had worked at Hidy for a while, so I decided to look the place up on Yelp and Google. A lot of people kept mentioning Jay, so I finally made an appointment with him. Best decision I ever made. Jay is always open to pictures and hair cut ideas. He takes what you want and modifies it to fit you. When he thinks it's a bad idea, he'll tell you straight up that a certain cut or style won't look good on you. He also tries to cut your hair so that it looks good after a few months. One style looked so good three to four months later that people kept asking me if I had just gotten a haircut. I'd say go to Jay if you want to make sure you get a haircut you can feel good about when you walk out the door. A cut is around $45 for women. read more

I went to Hidy Hair tonight for a trim and luckily, got the pleasure of meeting and receiving Jay's services. It's true, he's definitely a legend and I can see why (just Google him). I was lucky that it was a Thursday night and pouring out - just walked in. I told him that I had been growing my hair out and to not use the feathering scissors/razors because my hair is extremely thin already. The last place in NJ totally botched it. Anyways, my ends were totally fried and my hair had been so thinned out it needed some serious work. They washed my hair, as usual, and he asked if I wanted it heavy or light. Heavy, of course. He did an excellent job at giving more weight using the dry-cut method, and without sacrificing too much length. Totally love this guy--think I've finally found a new stylist. Prices are average. $45 for a woman's wash and cut, tip excluded. Definitely will be back! I've tried about 3 other salons in NJ and this is the only place where the stylist actually LISTENED to what you did and didn't want. read more
