Big Foot... best sammy in YEG
    Blair Y.

The BEST sandwich in Edmonton, there I said it. Okay, at least MY favorite sandwich in Edmonton... I had a morning dental appointment on the southside today and hadn't been to High Voltage in a while... when I lived and worked on the southside this was a regular stop for me. I had a conversation with the owner (he comes off a bit gruff and "all business" at first but is a great guy once you get to know him) and he has operated as High Voltage in this location for 21 years, and several years as a Mr. Sub before that. I did the math and have been a loyal customer for over 17 years now. So I was shocked when I checked in today and realized I have never reviewed one of my Edmonton all time faves. As stated in many reviews here the donairs here are amazing, and different than anything you will find elsewhere in Edmonton. But the real winner here is the Big Foot Sandwich. It has been my go to for years. A massive assorted meat pressed panini sandwich... loaded with quality, tasty deli meats and mozza cheese with tangy pizza sauce. I always opt for onions, hot sauce, green peepers, jalapenos and lettuce as my add ons. The crispy, fluffy, seasoned panini is always amazing. It is a whole lot of delicious sandwich... you will not leave hungry or disappointed. An absolute Edmonton treasure, give High Voltage a try. It is very unassuming when you pass by, so venture in and thank me later.

High Voltage. Perhaps a Greek tribute to Zeus and his all mighty wielding powers of lightning rods and thunderbolts? All you really need to know is that you're missing out if you haven't tried High Voltage out yet. I've passed by this place so many times, it's ridiculous that I haven't been here before. I finally went with my friend who was visiting and checked them out on a late Monday afternoon. There's a few parking spots out front but most of the people were taking out their donairs/gyro's to go. The place is quaint with a clean, aesthetically pleasing feel to it. Glass windows to car watch the time away. All of the staff were super friendly and even wrapped up my friend's leftover donair before we left. We ordered: - Greek gyro ($9.50 regular) - traditional, Greek style gyro. Marinated pork, feta, tomatoes, onions and a garlicky tzatziki sauce. I got mine traditional style (old school, I know). What I really like about High Voltage is that they grill them and have a sexy (yes sexy) mix of Greek spices on the outside. So addictive. - Donair ($9.25 regular) - my friend can't make a decision to save her life. Luckily, the lady working the front was insanely patiently and helped coax my friend into making a choice. But not really. Apparently you can mix different/multiple sauces (all about customization) so my friend went with a sweet and jerk sauce (Caribbean hot) combo. There's about 8 different donairs to choose from (greek, east coast, wild west, vindaloo, blue cheese, hangover, 2 alarm and jerk). Comparing the two, the gyro easily had more meat in it. Guessing, it must have been about 1.50 times more meat! Both pitas were delicious and the meat was tender, juicy goodness. So, to sum up, are you craving gyros or donairs but don't want the typical, greasy ones? Then hit up High Voltage. Crispy grilled pitas with a little bit of Greek magic equals satisfied bellies. Can't wait to go back again!

A few bites in. The meat was pretty tender and the pita was baked quite nicely, yummmm

I came across this place based on a friends recommendation and I'm glad I did. This is a nice little gem that serves up a great donair: I was very happy with both the size and amount of meat they managed to pack into one of these when I grabbed mine. They have a huge selection of donairs and wraps too, so you won't be hard pressed finding exactly what you'd like by coming here. And a shoutout to my fellow Kevin who works here and made it for me. His service and demeanor were awesome and I'd highly recommend you come down and see for yourself how great this place is from a donair lover like me!

Chicken Med with Tomato's and Onion

Don't ask me why, but I always assumed that High Voltage was a cafe/brunch spot. To my surprise, it's actually this super trendy Greek/donair restaurant. After finding High Voltage on DoorDash, my co-worker recommended that we order Chicken Souvlaki. High Voltage actually calls this Chicken Med - grilled chicken with tzatziki and feta cheese. Seeing that the wrap was only $6.25 for the small size, we had to do it. We kept it traditional and only added tomato and onion to our wrap. Our order arrived a bit earlier than expected (thanks DoorDash!) and just like that we were able to have pure deliciousness at work! The flavours and textures we're absolutely perfect. The chicken was juicy and well seasoned, while the sauce was mild and worked perfectly with the rest of the flavours. There are 3 sizes of the of Chicken Med and the small was a really good size for lunch. However the wrap was so good, I wanted more. So with no shame, I headed over to High Voltage only 2 days later. This time I ordered the regular (medium) size and it was alot of food for only about $10. I'll definitely come back to this restaurant for a quick bite and can't wait to try their donairs in the near future!

Small wheat Greek donair with veggies. Yum!

What the derrière is a donair? As a Californian girl, I am not well acquainted with the gloriously spiced meat wrap that is the donair, whose closest available relative I've encountered and eaten here is the gyro. On my first visit to Canada, my friend planned out the "top hits" of the most Edmonton/Canadian things I could do/eat, and donairs at High Voltage made it on the list. I ordered a small Greek donair with wheat wrap from among a great variety of donairs and gyros, as I wanted my first experience to be the standard. The proportions of veggies and meat and cheese were just right for me, even as a petite girl with a voracious appetite. I have a penchant for crispy, crunchy breads and wraps, and High Voltage definitely nailed it with their crisply pressed and well dressed wraps. The older man working the register (the owner perhaps) was in a jolly mood, catering to the lunch rush. Quick and efficient! The parking is cramped and can be a bit confusing, but go before or after the rush and you should be a-ok. The next time I return to Canada, I will most definitely swing by to get my donair fixin' fulfilled!

After hearing so much hype, I just had to check this place out, so what better time than a Sunday afternoon in Spring? I went with a group of 4 for lunch and we were all unanimously disappointed!! Right from the outset, we weren't greeted when we entered the restaurant, although when we did actually engage the girl at the counter in conversation (advising her we were visiting for the first time), she did recommend the popular choices off the menu. I tried the Greek style large pita ($14.75) with lamb and beef with all the veggies and a dash of jerk sauce for some zest) and it came out toasted with a light brush of spices like oregano and sea salt. I found it an extremely salty bite every step of the way, and considering I prefer savoury over sweet, this spoke volumes. The tzatziki was made salty. The meat was salty. The seasoning after toasting was salty. Are we detecting a theme yet??? Also, I didn't prefer the pita to be toasted and crunchy as all my favourite experiences eating a donair were involving how soft and warm the pita was. Further, i devoured the wrap without even feeling full. Because this isn't their signature dish, and I was still hungry, AND i was eager to let them redeem themselves, I went back up to the counter to order a small regular donair (untoasted) for $7.40. It came out with a cold hardened pita (usually signifying unfresh and possibly several days old). I will give credit where it's due and their donair meat was great! Not salty and very juicy and fresh cut with a god width to offer a nice bite! The rest of the wrap was only status quo and not enticing enough to jump into that pool on a summer day - if you will. The service was bland and lacked any of the character and charm of a mom n pop joint that one has come to expect. Overall, there are far better donair joints, even after considering all factors one expects for this type of treat (taste, price, character, cleanliness of venue, location, etc) Prior to my visit, this place had a 4.5 star rating here, and for their own sake, I hope they strive to return to that plateau. Good luck High Voltage :)

High voltage donair! The best in YEG

Best donair in the city! If u haven't tried these guys, put this place in your list, especially if you are a donair fan. They grill the donairs and add some spices to the outside so maybe thats why they are so good. Meat, veggies and garlic sauce are SO good

    New York Gyro. Awesome

I have been coming here for years and was surprised I hadn't done a rating yet. If I could do more than 5 stars I would. Best gyro, donair, sandwich in Edmonton **FULL STOP** Simple decor as they focus on what's important, awesome food. Always busy at lunchtime so get there early, or come a little later.

Awesome lunch! $7.75 for a large wrap!

In my (heavily biased) opinion Old Strathcona and Whyte Ave is the best part of the entire city. It…read moreprobably helps that I live nearby and have frequented this part of town practically every day of the combined fifteen years that I have called Edmonton home. The vibrant history of the area is one of Whyte Ave's defining features, each part of the streetscape telling its own story. One such example is the Hulbert block; a three-storey, brick clad, Edwardian commercial building that was built in 1912. On the street level of this building Edmontonians have been enjoying cozy cafe visits at Block 1912 (the cafe's name a tribute to the year that the building was built) since 1992. This cafe is one of the most notable spots on the avenue and their 33 year tenure makes them an iconic and reliable mainstay. Named Favourite Coffee Shop 2023 in the Edmonton Journal, it goes to show that even after this many years people seek out the familiar and comfortable spaces in the city. After all, Block 1912 really does feel a lot like going home. I have spent plenty of time at Block 1912 over the years and I have always been impressed by the immense amount of space that this cafe occupies. Full of time-weathered quirks, there is never any shortage of things to see and discover in this original-exposed-brick hideaway. Deep within the cafe the lighting dims as there are only windows at the very front of the space making natural light sparse. There are different levels of seating and mis-matched chairs. An entire nook is lined with shelves of books. I happen to know that there are secret drawers in various pieces of furniture that are filled with hundreds of notes, left by past patrons. Artists and musicians are encouraged to pitch their portfolios to the manager in order to be featured in the space - whether it be on the walls or to perform during one of the regular live music evenings. Visiting on a Saturday afternoon, I hadn't been to Block 1912 in a while and was interested in exploring everything that their menu has to offer these days. And there's a lot! The counter for ordering is about halfway into the cafe and the glass case full of pastries is an immediate distraction. Did you know that they also make their own gelato?? Of course all sorts of coffee beverages are available but Block 1912 also serves alcohol. There's a full menu of sandwiches, small plates, and comfort food. The staff is friendly and happy to answer any questions. I wanted to order a coffee to stick with the cafe vibe... But I'm not a straight black coffee kind of girl. The Ganache Mocha ($8.75) caught my eye but then I saw the list of 46 (!!) flavoured syrups that there are to choose from! It's almost impossible to decide on only one and after much difficulty I selected Toasted Marshmallow as an add-on to my mocha. Seemed like flavours that would make a lot of sense together! (If you ever want to find out what a "pineberry" latte tastes like go to Block 1912 and let me know what happens.) I settled into a table right at the front of the restaurant so that I could enjoy the small amount of natural light that reaches the interior. Receiving my coffee, I have to say that they got the memo! I was impressed at how much my toasted marshmallow ganache mocha looked exactly the part - there were even mini marshmallows on top! Was it incredibly sweet? Yes. Was there even coffee in this? Who knows! But this warm beverage was what I had been hoping for. Chocolatey with a definite toasted marshmallow flavour, I was delighted that this drink felt like a specialty cafe creation. In the interest of having an entire lunch, I wanted to order something off of the sandwich menu. The Hot Italian Grill seems like the sandwich to get. But the Turkey Apple Brie Sandwich ($16.00) felt seasonally appropriate and I picked that one. A soup or salad is also included, turning this dish into a meal. There were two daily soups available and the Vegetable Beetroot Soup also seemed to match the falltime vibe. I liked that the bread was a lot more interesting than a plain white or brown type. Instead, this bread was studded with what appeared to be cranberries - an ideal match for a turkey sandwich! The brie cheese was gooey and melty. I barely noticed the apples. It was a decently good sandwich but there wasn't a whole lot of filling and I could have easily made something like this at home. I liked the flavour combination though. The soup was warm and flavourful with a fairly fine dice of veggies within. I was expecting a more prominent beet component (maybe not a full borscht but somewhat closer to that) and I'm not sure if I noted the beets at all. If there was any, they were chopped very small and completely mixed in with the other vegetables. I also had to try the Herb Crusted Chicken Pot Pie ($18.00) from the Comfort Food part of the menu. Who doesn't love a soul-warming comfort food on a chilly day? It was even raining! Also served with soup or salad, we decided to try a salad

I know almond croissants are made with leftover pastries, but there was no texture at all. It just fell flat, and lookswise it was physically flat as well lol. It was alright. I wouldn't get the almond croissant again. The Bulgogi Poutine was pretty good. The fries were delicious and crispy. The sauce on top of the fries was slightly sweet, salty, and savory. For me, the bulgogi could've been more flavorful and it didn't taste fresh but I liked the overall dish. Lastly, the Peppermint Mocha was alright. It wasn't spectacular. And I felt the same way about my Lavender London Fog with oat milk. I wish there was more depth in my drink. I think the tea could've been steeped a little longer. Flavor was there in my drink, but it wasn't strong enough. It was slightly disappointing since I've had amazing London Fogs before, and this one just wasn't up to par.
