I was surprised to see so many poor reviews for Highland and noticed most of the reviews are quite old. I have been taking my dog to Highland for many years now and they have been wonderful with him. Now he's old and a little cranky and has skin issues, but they are great with him and he always comes home after a grooming looking fresh and adorable. Took my dog here recently to be groomed. He is a large dog with very long hair, and we are coming into the cold winter months. Our normal groomer was not available, and she lives quite far away, so we figured taking him here would be a great solution... boy were we wrong. He came back half shaved with wavy lines down 1 side and not the other. He had chunks of hair taken out in random sections from both his chest and hind legs, and cuts and lesions all over his paws. Ever since he's had trouble walking and limps around. We contacted the owner asking for some sort of compensation... Usually, I am not one to complain about service, as I work in customer service and I understand what it's like to have cranky customers, however, we were greeted with no sort of apology or even recognition of something gone wrong. They claimed we let him go too long without being groomed, and that he was too matted, which is understandable given we should take him to get trimmed up sooner. Even though this is true, we still brush him out occasionally, which takes time but is definitely in no way impossible. Overall, the management here is not great and did an awful job. read more

I have never in my 60 years of life been treated so rudely by a business and I'm originally from NYC! They have a policy, which is reasonable to have your Vet's records when dropping of your pet. Unfortunately, no one told me about the policy either when I made the appointment or when they called to confirm. I dropped the dogs off at the appointed time and found out about the policy and tried to reach their Vet. One dogs did not have one of the shots that they require, fine I'll pick them up. I asked for an apology from the owner that I was not informed about the policy prior to booking. The owner or manager stated pointing her finger at me and yelling at me. Needless to say, as a business owner and long term consumer I was rather shocked at being treated that way. When my dogs got home after being there almost 3 hours, they drank an entire bowl of water each. Clearly, the animals there are not treated properly. Not a good experience to say the least. read more

I grew up in Howard County and took my dog here for over a year on a recommendation from a friend. My dog is a cocker and I took him here aporoximately 9 times. Although the staff is friendly, they are overpriced and my dog consistently comes out uneven and basically non-professionally groomed. After the third time of saying something and being very upset, they offered to give the service at no charge. The dog is so visibly uneven that even the receptionist acknowledged. I won't be returning or referring anyone here. Another time his nail was cut down to the quick. I could do a better job at home. Very dissatisfied customer. read more

If I could rate it a zero I would. My beautiful 6 year old multigenerational Australian Labradoodle now has less hair on him now than he had when he was born. His normal groomer has been closed due to coronavirus and he hadn't been groomed since February so I thought I would try a new groomer. They didn't even try to get any of his mats out. They just shaved him down completely--even his face that was not matted and his formerly fluffy tail have zero fur on it. During this pandemic, I bathed him weekly and and tried to brush him as well as I could. They put no effort into trying to preserve his facial hair or tail hair. He looks like a totally different dog. His normal groomer would've taken the time to cut his mats out properly and save his facial hair and tail. I've taken my dog to approximately 8 or 9 different groomers over his six years and I've never had such a horrible experience. You'd think with a new customer this groomer would take their time and cut him right in order to gain a repeat customer. Instead they rushed him and shaved him completely down-head to tail. I'm not posting a photo because I'm so humiliated. Never ever again will I go to this place. Icing on the cake--one of the employees was smoking when I picked him up and her smoke was blowing in my face. Horrible experience. read more

We have been taking all of our dogs here for the past eight years! They have always done a fantastic job with our dogs. Very friendly and very professional. They really enjoy their job and the dogs that go there. Very helpful and do a great grooming job! Our black lab is terrified to go anywhere but when we tell him it's time to go get a bath he hops right in the car with no problems! Our Husky goes crazy when he knows he's going to get a bath. All of our little dogs love going as well. Love this place!! read more

I have been a customer for over 8 years and have always been very satisfied. I really love that they have Saturday hours so I no longer have to rush to and from work in order to get the dog dropped off in time. The staff is always very courteous and pleasant! If you want your puppy or dog to have a professional grooming, this is the place to go. If you don't get your hair cut at Fantastic Sam's or Master Cuts, why would you take your dog to PetCo or Petsmart for theirs? read more

I was going to Highland Groomery for a year before calling it quit. It's pretty far from my house but I don't mind the drive as they were voted one of the best grooming places. Plus, I love supporting local businesses. They were very nice, did a great job and absolutely adore my little guy. I was going there for a year until I discovered a big scaly bald spot on his back right after his grooming. I immediately took him to the vet the next day. The vet informed me it's a 2nd degree burn. Keep in mind, I felt horrible for my little one. He's an only child, and we love him to pieces. Despite this awful turnout, I'm not upset as I'm not sure what exactly happened so I called Highland. They were nice but pretty much said the spot has always been there (which is not accurate), and it's definitely not their fault. I didn't argue and just listen. Then I actually look at the reviews on yelp, in the hidden section, and oh my, I found another similar case!!! After that, I decided to find somewhere else. I could have given Highland 1 star but I want to give them the benefit of the doubt. Plus, they were very nice, and I can tell they really cared for my little guy. If they have told me upfront and apologize for what happened instead of covering it up, I might consider going back there. I understand mistakes happen. As long as you admit the mistake, learn from it and don't do it again, I'm good. Anyway, I'm now very happy with another groomer that comes right to my house to groom him so I'm definitely not going back to Highland or recommend them to my friends. read more

Everyone I spoke to was pleasant but I was extremely dissapointed with the cost and the way my dog looked when finished - she looks awful. Basically, I paid $85 for them to bathe and buzz down a 30lb GoldenDoodle with excellent temperment (I understand charging more for difficult dogs). I did inquire about price before taking the dog, but I was given a range from $65-$85....I was told "it really depends on the condition of the dog" I will readily admit my dog had a small matted area on her head and a couple of other less severe matts on her haunches, but I don't think the groomer even attempted to work them out.....she just buzzed the dog down. I probably wouldn't feel so ripped off if I paid $85 and the dog came out looking good.....but she looks awful. As a reference point, I've dropped my dog off at our regular groomer in similar condition and I was charged $55 and the dog looked great when done (they combed out the minor clumps and didnt just buzz the dog). Only reason why I used Highland was because my regular groomer wasn't available in the timeframe I needed. Next time I'll wait. Pleasant people, but bad results and fees are way too high. read more

I wanted to get my cat Oliver a lion cut one more time before the weather starts to get cold. Previously, I got his first lion cut done at Petsmart. About a week later, my brother's girlfriend called to schedule an appointment to get his cat (Choco) a lion cut, but they said they do not cut cats hair anymore or something along the lines of that... which I thought was odd because a groomery is supposed to groom your pets, no? So I searched and found this place down the road from me and let me just say I was so pleased! I took both cats to get a full groom with a custom lion cut. Oliver had no problem with it because it was his second time, but it had taken much longer for Choco because he got so upset lol! I was really pleased at how the cuts turned out; they definitely did a better job than Petsmart. The staff was very kind and answered any questions that I had; they also gave us some cat treats, cat nip, and a little carrier for Oliver. We only had a carrier for Choco because Oliver actually likes to sit on my lap or in the back during car rides. :) All in all, I will definitely be back! read more

Maybe our groomer was different than other reviewers have experienced.. Early in the summer we took our 25 lb Cavichon for grooming. She was terribly matted so I understood the need to shave her down. Given that experience, I combed and conditioned her regularly. I must say that when she grows in, her fur is thick and unruly....and we do let her fur grow because she's so darn cute. I have professional clippers and could groom her myself but am challenged by her fury face. My husband recently dropped her off at Highland Groomery and specified a trim. She came back shaved almost to bare skin....even her tail and back of her legs. No feathering left....and it's winter! My opinion is this is either an inexperienced groomer...or a lazy one. As mentioned, I have professional clippers and anyone can shave a dog. I was paying for experience and paid more for our dog to be shaved bare than I pay a stylist to do my own hair. On the positive side, Ginger does seem happy to go there, and is not in the least traumatized by the experience....unlike me! May I add a bit of humor....she looks naked and our male Cavalier is now "in lust" with her. read more

Dropped my dog off at 9am to get groomed. When i picked him up at 4pm.... 7 HOURS later for a simple bath and hair cut, I was told my bill was $85 only to see my dog looked exactly the same as he did when I dropped him off, except with a bit more of a fragrant smell. The haircut was very minimally done and certainly not what I would have expected for the price and amount of time he was there. Not to mention, when I did finally get him back he was dying of thirst and panting, so much so that he was drinking from the muddy water puddle outside of the place (which he never does). Very unsatisfied with my experience with this groomer and will certainly not be returning unless it is to collect a refund. read more

I took my 10 yr old Great Pyrenees to Highland Groomery before Thanksgiving to get bathed, brushed and trimmed. They did a horrible job. I would have given a 0 but that was not an option. My dog was matted at his rear, under the tail area. The groomer called once (although they said they talked to me several times, my phone has only one call from them) to discuss with me that she was having a hard time getting the mats out. I specifically told her not to shave him, but she did anyway. I could have accepted that she shaved the rump area and the underbelly. However, she also shaved the left side rear but left the right side long, making the cut very lopsided. There was also plugs of hair cut out where the hair was left longer. When I explained that I was not satisfied and wanted a refund, they naturally declined and stood by what their groomer did. They also said this was necessary and blamed me for him being matted. I do brush him often and I have used other groomers and have never had issues even when he is matted. Anyone knowing this breed, knows that you do not shave them with winter on the way. After picking him up, I noticed he was limping and not bearing weight on his right front leg. I mentioned this to Highland Groomery, and they explained that with all the pulling and cutting, that it was hard on the dog and probably hurt him. But they offered no apology. Needless to say, I will not be returning. read more

I had a terrible experience at this groomer. When I picked my dog up she could not open her eye. I took her the vet who said that she had been cut or burned during grooming. She even wrote a letter that I provided to the Highland Groomery, however they refused to reimburse me for any of the $85 I paid for the vet appointment and medication. To make matters worse they tried to say my dog must have come in with an injured eye, never apologized and were just rude about the whole thing. I will never go back. read more

Don't know where to begin--rude staff/owner, outrageous fees, and bad grooming. Many months ago I vowed to never go back when they cut my dog so badly he bled under his legs. Unfortunately, in my attempt to support a local business, and for the fact the Groomery is conveniently located, I did. Big mistake. After dropping my dog at 9am and not hearing from them all day I called at 4:30 to inquire. I was told he wouldn't be ready until 6pm. Nine hours to groom my dog?! Seriously? When I complained, one thing led to another and the owner, Wanda, ended up screaming at the top of her lungs, arms flailing, that I was difficult, she HATED me, her groomers HATED me, and she didn't give a sh-- whether I or my friends ever came back. I'm not sure where she learned her business techniques, but I can certainly say that I should have followed the advice of the other dissatisfied clients that have already refused to go back. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. Never again.. read more

I've been a customer for several months in 2014, however my last experience was VERY BAD!!! When I picked up my 9 year old Labradoodle, who has been groomed every six weeks since he was a puppy, he was charging out of the back trying to get out of the building. When we returned home, I noticed the hair cut was uneven, he had nicks/trauma to his skin and inside of his ears AND he was still bleeding in a couple of areas. When I spoke to the owner, they insinuated that his coat was matted and he had a skin condition, which has never been an issue because of his frequency of grooming. When I picked him up, his report even said his coat was in excellent condition and he was a Little Angel! I took him to the vet and the only issue with his skin was what happen at the Highland Groomery. I requested a refund ($105) but they offered a free oatmeal bath. I don't usually write reviews but my dog was traumatized and I don't want others to go thru this experience so beware of who grooms your dog! read more

I've been satisfied with Highland Groomery for years as the go to place for my cats to get groomed. The last year or so, their level of service has dropped. The first issue I had is that my cat's ear was cut during the grooming and they didn't tell me. I understand that these things happen but i need to know for follow up care. No fee reduction was offered when I called to complain. The attitude was very blase about it, no compensation or even an apology. The second issue I had was that I got up early on a Sunday to take him back there. He was there from 8:30 am until 3p when I got a call saying the groomer had left for a family emergency. My day had been built around picking him up, which I did, but he was not groomed and again, no compensation or even a coupon was offered. The same blase response-these things happen-was given. I do not feel like a valued customer. I told my little guy Leo that we would not be going there again. He deserves to be treated better. read more

Just wanted to warn other cat owners not to ever leave their pet at this place. We left our beloved cat here in the summer - she was left on a Wednesday, they lost her by Friday and did not inform us until the following Monday. When we returned from our vacation we looked everywhere for her but have never found her.. Needless to say this has been heartbreaking for our family. The staff appeared sad but it seemed more needing to talk about their loss then dealing with ours. They attempted to do various things to find our cat but nothing until she had been missing for days. There are holes in the walls of the house where any cat can crawl in to and unbeknownst to us they let a cat out each night alone in a room, which I can only imagine is terrifying for that cat - this is how our cat went missing according to them. I never want anybody esle to have to go through this - thinking you are leaving your pet somewhere safe and then it being "lost". read more
