I made an appointment to see Dr. Kanon after starting to receive a shooting pain in my bottom left tooth. I made my appointment through the receptionist Lori, who is the absolute sweetest. I was so nervous to try a new dentist since I had been with my last dentist for 26 years, but they made me feel right at home. Lori, Dr. Kanon, and Huy (Dr. Kanon's assistant) were so welcoming and knowledgeable. Dr. Kanon spent time getting to know me, explained my issues in-depth, and is truly passionate about what she does. On a safety level, I was really impressed by the enforcement of masks, the thorough cleaning of the room, rinsing of patients' mouths with Hydrogen Peroxide, and encouraged 20-second hand washing. I am gonna begin with Lori since she is the first person you will meet after entering the office. She is literally the nicest lady you will ever meet who puts a smile on everyone's faces. That said, the entire staff is unbelievably friendly. Two things stand out to me the most. 1. Transparency. Personally, it is not the costs that turned me off, it was the fact that you don't know how much you will be paying at the doctor's office until after the fact. After my consultation, I greatly appreciated a quote on the type of procedures as well as the cost associated was provided. 2. Visual Inspection: I saw pictures of my mouth up close and personal, not just the black, white, and grey x rays that I don't understand. The shock factor was enough to get me on my oral hygiene A-game. Dr. Kanon, Lori, Linda and the entire staff at the dental office are superb. We have been with Dr. Kanon for years now and wouldn't go anywhere else. In addition to the family feeling, now during the COVID crisis, we get pre visit calls, temperature checks, full PPE and a mouthwash to reduce virus in our mouths before treatments. Linda, my favorite hygienist (!) is provides not just great cleaning, but great advice on continuing to maintain great oral health and wellbeing. Linda REALLY cares about my health. Dr. Kanon is the most gentle dentist I have ever worked with. During any dental procedure she is always alert to my comfort. She explains what will happen before the procedure, constantly checks on me during the procedure and ensures I am as relaxed as possible. I am 38 years old and I am embarrassed to admit this, but I am terrified of going to the dentist. I have very rarely had a good experience when I have gone (which I get is a vicious cycle) but this last visit at my previous dentist was such a horrible experience that I feel like I have to post what happened. I had been going to my previous dentist for about 10 years, not as regularly as recommended but we had a long history. I recently noticed that I had lost a couple fillings at some point and scheduled an appointment to have them fixed along with my regular cleaning and xrays. The scheduling went smoothly and so did the xrays and cleaning. Afterward I was sent to "the other side" of the office to see the dentist. He looked at my xrays and looked quickly in my mouth and told the hygienist what he noticed, in medical speak using numbers and terms that I was not familiar with, and then said we can take care of it today. At first I was really happy that they would be able to get everything done in one day because it is very difficult for me to get childcare. Then I realized as they were preparing to numb me, that they never told me what needed to be done or how much it would cost! I immediately asked for an estimate. When they came back with it I was quoted for 7 teeth and $398 out of pocket! I have dental insurance and was told that they accepted my insurance over the years. I questioned the amount and they just explained that insurance would only cover that much. After calling my husband we agreed to get a second opinion and I ended up leaving without having my fillings fixed. I called my insurance and found that even though my regular dentist did indeed accept my insurance they were no longer in my network so the percentage of coverage was minimal. I was very discouraged to hear that and that they had not said anything when I asked about the cost. After discovering all of this I found a new dentist on my insurance carrier's website. Dr. Hilda Kanon is amazing!!! Her receptionist, Lori, made scheduling super easy and she was very friendly and understanding when I explained my situation to her. She got me in within a couple days of my calling and when I finally met her in person she was all that I expected. Then I met Dr. Kanon and she was so great! I can't even put into words how comfortable and heard she made me feel. She took a long time discussing my dental and medical history with her, no judgements at all and not trying to sell me things, and she went over everything with me. She examined my mouth very thoroughly and explained that she wanted to take photos and told me what she was going to do along every step of the way. When she told me only 3 teeth needed work and showed me why I knew she was who I wanted to work on my teeth. Then she sent in Lori with the estimate (without me needing to ask ahead of time) and it was $38!!! Once I gave the go ahead she went right to work. To be honest the part I dread most is the needles for the anesthetic. It always makes me very anxious and it usually hurts so much, this time I literally felt nothing! She numbed the areas with gel first and actually gave it time to work and the only pressure I felt was her shaking my cheek to spread it. I have never had such a painless visit to any dentist! On top of which my teeth feel great! I don't have any bite issues or rough or sharp places bothering me and everything went exactly how she said it would. Thank you so much! I have already recommended you to a couple of coworkers and will continue to sing your praises! I would also like to mention that I didn't tell anyone at the office about how I get anxious about going to the dentist, they were just that great for everyone. I've been living in the Bay Area for almost 2 years now, but I would always go back to my family dentist to get work done. It's always really hard to find a good dentist, and I was apprehensive about trying out a new one, but I'm glad I did. Dr. Kanon's office is very simple but welcoming and friendly. During my first visit, I was pleased to see that it was very hygienic compared to other offices I've seen. From my visits I've noticed that the staff is very thorough and deeply committed to educating their patients and explaining the procedure every step of the way. I learned things in a few sessions that I had never know because no other dentist or hygienist felt it was important to tell me. That's one of the most valuable things to me. Since last December, I've had my regular checkup there. I've also had X-rays taken and a deep cleaning. I was a little apprehensive about the deep cleaning as I'd never had one before, but Ginette, the dental hygienist, made it a very comfortable experience. She was really good with details and you can tell she really cares about doing a good job. She also had good stories to tell, which is a plus for me :). I went to see Dr Kanon about 8 months ago when I had Aetna Ins. I was so happy with her and her assistants work, I knew I had found my new Dentist. Since then I've changed ins and thought she was still approved. Upon arriving last month, I gave the front desk girl my new ins card and proceeded to wait for my appt. Unfortunately, I found out I signed up for the wrong dental plan when I switched. I had Blue Cross HMO and this office takes PPO. Dr Kanon said she understood if I didn't want to keep my appt, no charge would be made to me. I'm big on keeping my health up. I knew it was important for both me and my relationship with the office to keep my appointment. I stayed and paid full price for my cleaning. It was not a big deal to me, as it was my mistake. Dr Kanon and her staff are superior to the other dentist I have seen in the South Bay area. They don't inflate prices, they are honest about what needs to be done, they are gentle and on time.
