Best pancakes hands down in Marin. The German style pancakes are so delicious, so fluffy and simply epic. I am still thinking about them and it's been 3 days. The Greek scramble was also delicious and fresh. The combination of olives and onions and feta was refreshing and absolutely two thumbs up. The service is lovely, friendly and helpful. Always felt cared for during our meal with coffee refills and check in. The ambiance is great. The interior looks like a dinner decorated with 50s art work and signage. I decided to give this spot a try since I've passed it so many times on my drive through San Anselmo. I legit thought it was an actual coffee before I popped in and saw it was a full blown breakfast spot. I decided to give it a try, I ordered a two egg breakfast with ham. The hash browns were not that good and tasted kind of off. The ham and eggs were really good. Im not usually one to complain about prices but I.was also really surprised to be charged $5 for a small glass of apple juice that was from the first street brand which is pure concentrate. I also looked over and saw that the orange juice was also the first street from concentrate and sugar. I just feel like for the prices that it could be a better quality of juice and the coffee wasn't the best as well. Probably wouldn't come back but I'm glad that I tried it! read more

A local downtown favorite. I have not been there in years but enjoyed my experience. I wanted oatmeal but was not in the mood to make it and Hilda's was a great option. The portion was very large, the toast was perfectly toasty and the staff was nice. I really enjoy going to this diner and I'm happy the community supports it. I have never left a Yelp review, but this is deserving of one. There was an awful incident at this restaurant today. The blonde waiter (who says her name is Chris) treated my mother terribly when she was having a minor medical emergency. Chris began yelling at my mother to get out of the restaurant when she started getting faint so she didn't have to deal with her. Anyone knows that yelling at a very faint person is not going to help, and in fact, can exasperate the condition. Chris is a severe liability at your restaurant. Chris abrasively took my phone number to pass along to the owner (apparently named Sue?) so that she could give me a call. To Sue/the family who owns Hilda's: Please give me a call. Thank you. I have grown up in San Anselmo, dined at your restaurant my entire life, and look forward to connecting. Also: Thank you to the sweet woman with her two children at the counter for helping my mother and quickly going behind the counter to grab orange juice for her. We are so grateful for you. read more

I grew up here and have stopped by Hilda's on and off for decades. I used to love it because it remained a real breakfast diner as the rest of Marin gentrified. By "real breakfast diner" I mean you could sit down, get coffee, order, eat a good diner breakfast--not fancy--pay, and leave in 35 minutes. If it was busy, they'd tell you the wait and you could decide to stay or go. Unfortunately, I'm done with the place after today. The service was abysmal. I don't mind waiting, especially now that's it's so difficult to find help. I know the financial hit from the pandemic may require them to run the place short-staffed. But, the staff's lousy communication and borderline rudeness made the experience too much of a pain in the neck for me to waste another Saturday morning at Hilda's. When the two of us arrived, the sign at the door said, "Please wait to be seated." We waited. As they went in and out the front door to the outdoor dining area, the servers gave us one quick "Hi" and then proceeded to ignore us for 15 minutes. Finally, as she passed by us on her way back in the door, one of the servers said over her shoulder, "If you sit inside, you don't have to wait." How confusing! Should we ignore the posted sign and seat ourselves inside, (which would have been fine), or should we continue to wait? The gentleman behind us walked right in, seated himself and immediately got service. Having lost our place in line, we seated ourselves. We waited some more. The two servers took care of some other customers, worked behind the counter, and continued to walk back and forth to the outdoor dining area. We flagged the guy bussing the tables, who seemed to be the only person who cared. Finally, a server came over and explained that we should've waited to be seated because that would have somehow indicated that we had not ordered. He politely took our order and we ate. I was annoyed with the confusion THEY CAUSED, but his discrete apology went a long way. We went out of our way to be polite ourselves. I was glad to see them so busy. It had been a very sub-par experience, but the food was good and came in a timely manner, as usual. The final straw was paying. By now, the place had emptied out. We sat politely waiting for the check. We waited some more. Finally, it came. I plunked down my card. More waiting. Even fewer customers now. We began to get the feeling this final delay was on purpose. It was our payback for flagging the staff for help rather than just passively waiting. I see a lot of reviews similar to mine. I hope they get it figured out. read more

Went to Hilda's for dinner last night. They are open on the weekends now. Fantastic food (as always). We split the wedge salad and the burger....had a peanut butter brownie a la mode for dessert. Hilda's breakfast was great! A quaint Diner in downtown San Anselmo. I had the two egg breakfast with extra crispy has browns and toast. Very fresh and delicious. My friend had the Traditional Eggs Benedict with a pancake. It was very, very good. Our friendly waitress suggested the pancake. It was delicious. Crispy edges and light batter. Thin and yummy. If you like great pancakes you must have them. The kitchen staff was wonderful. Everything tasted great! It's not cheap. Each dish is around $12-14. This is a nice place to enjoy an old fashioned American style breakfast. read more

Been a customer here for several years. Even with 30+ min drive, it has always been worth it. Since the pandemic, we often order to go and sometimes eat across the street in the picnic area under the redwood trees. Good food and customer service. Today we were told when we went to pick up our food that they no longer take credit cards. This was not told to us over the phone when we placed the order. We've always paid with our cc card. No ATMs close by. Closest ATM at the gas station was out of order. Nearest bank was about 2 miles away. We don't have any issues paying cash but I wish they would have told us when we placed the order especially since it's a change from their past practice. In addition, when we got home and opened our to go box, the stack of banana nut pancakes was just a stack of plain pancakes with banana slices placed on top of the stack. No bananas or walnuts whatsoever inside the pancakes. Very disappointing as that was our favorite menu item. I would have rather have them tell us they were unable to make them properly. The rest of our brunch was fine. French toast was good. The crab cake was crunchy and delicious. Not sure if I'll return if they've changed the way they make their banana pancakes. I do not go to Hilda's often, but when I'm in the mood for eggs Benedict, Hilda's, with the many terrific variations they offer, is the place to go, except today. Partly burned English muffin, 1 medium size egg, and another tiny one, on an unsavory piece of ham. I do not remember the Hollandaise tasting quite like this either. I asked for well done hash brown and they came in barely colored on top. The service was good and friendly. As much as I want to support our local vendors, I don't think I will be going back anytime soon. read more

My wife and I have been going to this place for breakfast for the last year or so and have noticed how things have gone downhill. This morning was our last visit. The hash browns were served cold. We had to ask the server for toast which came with our meal, and when it arrived, it consisted of some warm bread slices with a spot of butter on each slice. The utensils they give you are a joke. Old, dull and out of shape. Plastic knives and forks would work better. And to top it all off, the server acted like he was doing us a favor by serving us. How this place stays in business is beyond me. Do yourself a favor and spend your hard-earned money elsewhere. read more

But if you enjoy a good basic, solid and tasty breakfast or brunch then continue on! This was my first time here and we decided to try it because we liked the name! Really, just the name. We walk in and we are greeted by a server who was a trip. She was fast talking, friendly and funny. She got us going with coffee and shortly after got our orders. The coffee was good, which is a big plus in my book. The food did come a bit late, but that was because they were VERY busy. But when it came it was good granted that they had forgotten not to put onions and mayonnaise on my girlfriend's burger. My omelette was just right. The hash browns were awesome. My girlfriend's burger was very tasty and the fries were super. All and all a good experience and the food quality was very good. I would've given them a four star had it been not for the delay, no refile of coffee, and the mistake on the burger. I will definitely give them another try. read more

My boyfriend and I were sad when Hilda's wasn't open at the beginning of the pandemic. Recently, we were so excited to hear they are offering outdoor seating and we went for his birthday. Like the other reviews, when we got there we were told not to switch tables because then they have to wipe them down. We were told we had to pay for a bottle of water. Our food came on a paper plate. We had to clean up after ourselves.... BUT THE FOOD WAS JUST AS AMAZING AS IT ALWAYS IS! I don't get why people are mad about the precautions Hilda's is taking-- I think all restaurants should be doing this. There is still a pandemic going on! If you want a delicious egg scramble, amazing pancakes, and not to catch COVID, you should go to Hilda's. read more

Going out for pancakes is a luxury, and your wallet is going to feel it anywhere you order them. Three buttered German pancakes with powdered sugar and lemon and a cup of coffee at Hilda's came to about twenty bucks here before tip, about twice what it costs at my local Denny's. These pancakes at Hilda's are worth it, plus the seven dollars' toll across the San Rafael bridge to get there. A more delicious, succulent pancake I've never tasted. There's talent and judgment in the kitchen here that elevate the dish beyond any pancake I've ever made. It's taking all my self-control to limit my indulgence to once a month. read more

Never got seated so I had to seat myself. Didn't get asked for my drink for 20 minutes. My table was covered in water which soaked my wallet and phone. Ordered our food and didn't receive it for an hour and a half. Got eggs Benedict which is some of the worst eggs Benedict I have ever had unfortunately. The sides were good so that's why I rate it two stars. Never was asked how the food was and our drinks never got refilled in my whole two hours there. My bill was messed up so I had to argue to have it changed to the correct price and was still overcharged. I will give the benefit of the doubt that it was just a rough day but definitely will not come back in. Highly disappointed for such a well known cafe. Update: got food poisoning as well. WOW!! Great blend of food and top notch customer service. I had a breakfast omelet with Ortega chile and RYE toast(such a great choice of bread) and French roast coffee. I enjoyed every single bite. Mario had out of this world Pancakes with bananas!! They were to die for, the mix is full of flavor. Did I forget to mention local celebrities frequent this place? An established old school coffee shop with a counter and Formica surfaces and smells of the fryer and sausage wafting from the very clean kitchen. One guy was serving omg everyone and doing an amazing job. Friendly atmosphere with good quality basic diner fare. Pancakes were Swiss style more like crepes. I love those. Coffee is plentiful if not designer. Server saw a small mistake from the kitchen and reconciled it immediately even though the place was filling up. He knows his business. Overall I can see why it's a local favorite and we will be back if the wait isn't too long. read more

We were told to take a seat inside at 11.20am which we did and then nothing. The waitress wearing an offensive T-shirt "free Brittney, take Karen" was more concerned about bussing a table for her friends (party of 5) than attending to us. Then another couple arrived at 11.35am and were seated and given coffee straight away while she socialized with them. Seriously! We got up and left and I told the busser that we were very disappointed. Maybe the hostess - blonde older woman should get some help and focus on her customers than making statements with her clothing.. I ordered the two egg breakfast with bacon, hash browns and wheat toast -- it was enough for an army and everything was super tasty. My friend ordered the eggs Benedict and it was great as well. I love this local spot with a long San Anselmo history. It breaks my heart that they are struggling to stay in business. The staff at Hilda's is so nice, dedicated and genuine. And I haven't even mentioned the food! They have the best Swedish pancakes - that's pretty much all I ever order. My husband got waffles with fresh fruit (pictured); also amazing. Hilda's is one of the last original diner's in Marin and only one in San Anselmo. Was opened and started by the original Hilda, then owned by daughter and now to the local gents who have kept the traditional and original menu. On any given day, you could pop in and sit at the counter for a cup of Joe and grab a donut from the glass topped container in the counter and see the locals, talk to Hilda about days events and see the local color. And you never just knew who would stroll in for some grub: Huey Lewis, Carlos Santana, George Lucas with Ron Howard and kids, to name just a few. Or you could stroll by, and say hi or just see who was sitting in the big window. Before BUBBA's it was always Hilda's. It should be slated a land mark especially in San Anselmo and as a 3rd gen. If the town, I'm glad I still have a place that resembles what my town used to look like and wished it still used to be!! Thank you guys for keeping it here and up!! read more

Last week I was telling a good friend how my wife and I never buy each other Valentines Gifts. It also happens to be our anniversary which is very weird, I know. Now just so that you know, that the "no gift" policy is something I tend to overlook and always pick up a few small items for my beautiful wife. This year I picked up a bouquet of flowers and a gift certificate from Burke Williams. That evening when she got home from work. I had the flowers and a gift bag sitting on our table surrounded by all of our stuffed animals. She had biggest smile on her face and she loved gift certificate. Then my wife excuses herself from the room and walks back in with a huge beautifully wrapped package. "For me" I say. She smiles and hands it over. I rip open the wrapping paper and what do I find inside? A brand new 17" MacBook Pro! That's right, the big one! Way bigger and badder and kicks the 13" MacBook Pro I got her last year. Size matter bitches! And if you are into bigger, then head over to Hilda's where the portion sizes are gigantic. Everything from the omelets to the pancakes are packed with flavor and will help expand your belt line. And if you are not a breakfast person, the lunch menu includes tuna melts, burgers, onion rings and even sweet potato fries. This is by far my favorite breakfast spot in the North Bay. read more
