My biggest issue was with the billing and insurance process. I felt that the focus was more on collecting payment than helping me maximize my available insurance benefits and minimize my out-of-pocket costs. After doing my own research and asking questions, I learned that part of my services could have been submitted to my secondary insurance, which would have resulted in a refund. Had I not asked, I would have paid more than necessary. I value providers who are proactive in helping patients use their insurance benefits, not providers/clinics that have to be asked to use those benefits. For that reason, I'll be choosing a different office in the future.

My gps initially had me going into the Walmart that is near the office but the office is definitely NOT in Walmart. Rather, it's in the road/alley between Walmarts curbside parking spots and the eye shop across from the Walmart. When I tried calling the office prior to my apt time to get help with locating the office no one answered the phone. So, not great in terms of clarity around where the office is and not helpful at all when no one answers the phone. 2. I had an apt time and someone came in as a walk-in and the walk-in was seen/supported before I was. I found this again, not courteous at all or fair. Overall, Dr Reed was great and while the office was difficult to locate and on the small/older side it served its purpose. The front desk staff absolutely need some training in how to serve patients better.

My last appointment was in April of 2022, and given that I had LASIK in August of 2022, my vision has changed quite a bit since then! I called on Tuesday to schedule an appointment before the end of the year and they squeezed me in the very next day. Dr. A did a phenomenal job of evaluating my vision and discussing my eyes since I had LASIK. Considering we had a similar level of vision prior to LASIK, I love knowing that she's also speaking from a place of experience when discussing LASIK symptoms. Honestly, my surgeon did a great job and I have 20/20 vision, but she worked with me to help me get a pair of FL-41 (migraine lens) sunglasses with a slight boost for driving, since I always have a pair of car sunglasses and am prone to migraines. The eye glasses fitter did an excellent job of helping me select a pair of frames that looked great and fit my face. We spent a little extra time color matching the FL-41 shade to the jade-colored glasses I selected, but she was so friendly and patient the entire time. All in all, this was a great experience and my only complaint is that the coffee machine took too long so I wasn't able to get a cup of coffee before my appointment began! Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, so still a 5/5 in my book. This facility is located in a small business center, so there is typically plenty of parking, but certain sections of the parking lot are currently closed as the building undergoes a roof repair. I highly recommend this location and will likely continue coming here even though I live in South Austin now.

They stopped taking Superior Vision about two years ago, but Joe offered a 30% courtesy discount because they no longer accept my insurance. That's why I made an appointment and went in anyway. This year, after another great exam, the new female optician flat-out refused to honor that same discount and spoke to me in a condescending, irritated tone. She insisted the discount only applied to people who had vision insurance they don't accept--not to uninsured patients--and acted like I was wasting her time when I pointed out I could add Superior Vision at work to qualify for the discount and save money. Her attitude made it crystal clear she didn't care whether I stayed or left. To confirm I wasn't imagining things, I took my prescription to Mann Eye Institute. Without me asking, without me explaining anything, they immediately offered a 30% discount for not having vision insurance. No attitude. No excuses. No hoops. Just basic respect and professionalism. Meanwhile, Northwest Hills doesn't even answer their phone anymore. You get a text message instead, and half the time they don't respond. Fantastic doctor. Terrible staff. The difference between Northwest Hills and Mann Eye Center is night and day, and I'm taking my business where I'm treated like a patient--not a problem.
