Took a ride up to Hill Farmstead with my sister. The last time I was at the brewery, it was their one year anniversary, so needless to say, many things have changed. One thing that did not change was the delicious brews- so worth the trip. And, all of the employees are so friendly and helpful. We went on a beautiful day in August. Sat in some Adirondack chairs and enjoyed the beautiful scenery while sipping on great beer! I had Arthur and George. I love how many of their beer is named for family members- their stories are fun to read. Very family and pet friendly. We brought sandwiches, but there was a BBQ food truck on the premises. We bought some cans to bring home. I would strongly urge beer lovers to check out Hill Farmstead-guaranteed deliciousness. read more

Well, this is easy. It was a snowy Saturday on a dirt road approaching the farm, brewery, shop and beer. There were 20 people in the draft room. About what I thought there would be. This brewery was known to be superior 8 or so years ago. Us hop heads in CT dreamed about it but never tasted. We were curious, their location was intriguing. It also made us skeptical. So the snow is falling, it's approaching 4pm, the drive brings you up a hill on the dirt road. Add beer to the uncertainty of the moment, it was perfect for anxiety, excitement and first tastes. Draft one was a nitro stout. Yeah, like Guinness but... UNBELIEVABLE. Just that good. Then an IPA close to their origin. Simple. Again, UNBELIEVABLE. Easy sell, I bought each 4 pack available. Asked for a restaurant in Montpelier. The Three Penny Taproom was... UNBELIEVABLE. (Chickpeas, Chicken Nuggs and Hill Farmstead all over the place.) Of course the brewery guys recommended it, and the gas station at Willey's in Greensboro. So we survived the "brief flurry", and a Taproom extraordinaire. The beer is ready for a Connecticut Christmas and will be compared to the beer from Burlington, Stowe and Deerfield. All great brews. The anticipation of enjoying Hill Farmstead beer was just as exciting as the trip and first taste. So, If you need a trip, find them. No complaining about the distance and remoteness, please. It's where they are. Yeah, you can find the beer in other places in state. I look forward to getting it at those spots. I look forward to seeing the brewery in the summer! read more

A true bucket list experience is visiting Hill Farmstead Brewing. They are on a gorgeous property that may be more impressive than the beers. But the beers are nothing to sleep on. The staff are also some of the kindest individuals that I have met in the industry. Providing lengthy explanations of the history of the brewery, the story behind the beers, and even showing a little bit of where the beer itself is brewed. I tried a few different beers ranging from their lagers to their barrel aged stouts - all some of my favorite beers I've had all year. Poetica 2024: A Czech Pilsner brewed with Saaz hops, brewed in a single decoction mash process, fermented with Czech & German lager yeasts strains in a French oak puncheon. Some tannins from the wood come through. Nice and bready with deep malt flavors and a pleasant spicy hop flavor. Wheat Blanc (03/16/2022): A Wheat Ale blended from 9 to 16 month wine barrel-aged ales hopped with Motueka from Freestyle Farms and Hallertauer Blanc hops from Seltz Farms. Bright and citrusy. A slight acidic bite to the beer, but not sour by any means. Medium-light in body. Lemon, lime, and hints of apple. The Order of Things 03: An Imperial Stout aged in Sherry Barrels for two years consisting of a blend of several Bourbon Barrels. This was brewed in honor of batch #1,000 and was deep and malty with complex Sherry notes from the barrel. Cocoa, espresso, and burnt caramel rounded out by bitterness that doesn't destroy the palate. _______ read more

Hill Farmstead Brewery is a craft farm brewery that opened in Greensboro Bend, Vermont in 2010. It was founded by brewer Shaun E. Hill. The history of the farm property and estate date all the way back to 1791 when father and son Peleg Hill Sr. and Jr. first settled the land. The Hill family even helped with the founding of Greensboro and North Greensboro as well as the building of the first roads, mills and the first tavern in 1809 (owned and operated by Aaron Hill). Seven generations later, Shaun Hill would create his first homebrew as a high school science project. After working at a few small Vermont breweries, Hill accepted a position at Nørrebro Bryghus in Copenhagen, Denmark where he excelled under the mentorship of Anders Kissmeyer. After returning to the U.S. in 2009, Hill quickly put a plan together to open a brewery on his ancestral land. The logo for Hill Farmstead was inspired by the original Hill family tavern sign. The beer's popularity took off at an alarming rate and within a few years Hill had to expand from a small garage brewery to a much larger brewery, tasting room, production facility and packaging room. Throughout this time, the brewery would win several awards and accolades with some even calling it "the best brewery in the world". I recently visited Hill Farmstead for the first time while I was on a Vermont craft beer road trip. Although I had never been to the brewery before, I've heard nothing but fantastic things for well over a decade. I would always get excited anytime I would attend a bottle share and someone showed up with a Hill Farmstead beer. I arrived just as the brewery was opening for the day. The location is very isolated but beautiful. There weren't too many people there and there was plenty of seating in the taproom as well as outside on the grounds. The brewery production and packaging facility was also quite impressive. For my first draught pour, I enjoyed "Mosaic" (Single Hop IPA). Brewed exclusively with hand-selected Mosaic hops, it was absolutely delicious. Afterwards I enjoyed a pour of "Aaron: Bourbon/Cognac" (Barrel-Aged Barleywine). The 2020 Vintage was nothing short of fantastic! Before leaving, I visited the retail shop and purchased a bottle to take home. My first visit to Hill Farmstead was truly memorable and I hope to return! read more

Came on a weekend and they have so many people lounging around and bringing kids and dogs. Overall, very relaxing vibe but definitely not an easy place to get to and has limited cell service. Luckily, they have free WiFi if you need to look up instructions on how to get home. Even if there are a lot of people, the line moves pretty quickly and you can sample a few beers before purchasing! I love their concept of naming beers after their ancestors. Lastly, they also had a food truck if you need food. read more

Drove over five hours To Hill Farmstead from Rhode Island and would 100% do it again! This brewery absolutely blew me away and easily became one of my top favorite breweries EVER! Our server Dylan absolutely made the best experience for us. He was super kind and helpful in understanding out tastes and recommending the best beers. We loved all the beers we tried. The IPAs weren't too hoppy, stouts weren't too thick, and the farmhouse ale was perfect. We went at the end of September when it was cold and we had to sit inside. I can imagine in the summer it is full of people outside. Absolutely a beautiful venue and I would love to come back here again! read more

Great imperial stout! There were plenty of beer connoisseurs here, so before I tried anything I felt like this place is legit. Staff is friendly. Not alot of room to sit so you'll have to fight for a table. But if you're just here for good beer, you're golden. read more

Amazing outdoor atmosphere with great craft beer in the middle of nowhere. Took us an hour to drive from Stowe but it was a beautiful Nov day with temps in the high 40s so we brought a sandwich along and had a wonderful lunch outside on the picnic tables. We have been here before when the place was mobbed with people so today was a nice change, very quiet. Check the online list of beers to make sure you like something that is on tap. Limited beer sales to go in cans or bottles. Bring a sandwich, have a beer and enjoy the views. No cell service here so be sure to get directions back to your hotel while you are on hill farmsteads wifi. read more

Updating my review after 10 years and countless visits. Still one, if not the best, brewery in the world. They basically nail all of the styles, from hoppy stuff to farmstead ales to stouts and everything in between. The staff here are always very friendly and helpful and always greet regulars and new visitors with a smile. Some tips: The bottle/retail shop for to-go items is the first building on the left. The tasting room is the larger building on the right. Always visit both spots. They tasting room will always have a nice selection of the freshies as well as special bottles pulled from their expansive cellar. They are both very kid friendly and dog friendly. Just no dogs in the tasting room. They usually have some cheese/olives for sale on site and during the warmer months they may have food trucks. However, there is no issue if you decide to pack some food with you to enjoy onsite. read more

The best brewery in the known Universe. This is a must visit for beer lovers and a pilgrimage I make whenever I'm visiting Stowe. The retail store offers online ordering (it says it opens at 7am, but sometimes it's not available until 8am) and pickup 4 days a week beginning at 1130 am. The taproom has returned to allowing walk-ins, but you can reserve a table in advance which is a good idea during busy times. The outdoor area is spacious and features sweeping views of rural Vermont. There's an apple orchard across the street. And sometimes there's a food truck on site. read more

Drinking beer in a farm or in the mountains is a very pleasurable experience. It totally makes my life better, I don't know why. I always think of those places where I have been able to step outside and enjoy the view of a gigantic mountain or green pastures all around. And this brewery is one of those places. There are many cons here: no small pours, no chairs outside, spotty connection, and lots of private property around. But, but, you still get a lawn where you can sit and just look out into the blue skies. It is a tricky situation and you have to make the best of it, a lot of people come here and most available seating will be taken. If you can, bring a blanket to throw on the grass. About the beer: you just going to have to drink them all. There are special bottles also, so... yep, lots of beer drinking. Luckily, the food trucks are legit. read more

We were one of the first ones there and people were flowing in after for hours and the lines kept increasing. Again-so worth it! Oh man. Another Vermont brewery that I could easily spend a whole day at getting properly faced. This place is AMAZING in just about every respect. We'd had Hill Farmstead beer before but have never visited the source. We were always impressed, so were very excited about this stop. It did not disappoint. First of all, do not be alarmed. At some point in your journey to Hill Farmstead, you will question Google and go, "Google, are you sure this is the right way? This is a dirt road." It is the right way! Keep going! Google knows where it is. So this is a super cool brewery with tons of property, so there's the inside area, the outside deck, the entry lot with a bunch of barrels to use as tables and a big sprawling field that you can sprawl out on too. Plenty of space for the masses. So there's a side area to the left as you walk in where you go if you want to buy beer to go. Then if you go in the "main" entrance, there are separate lines for growlers and glasses. We were somewhat befuddled when a young man told us he was only doing growlers and we had to get in the beer by the glass line, even though he was literally doing nothing and later started helping people in the beer by the glass line because it was absolutely overflowing. WTF. Anyway... Once we got in the right line and got served, we totally enjoyed ourselves. I had the pilsner (the name ended in #3 but I cut it off in my photo so I can't see the whole thing, lol). I generally don't order pilsners but this one is worth ordering. Robust flavor, light and crisp like a Kolsch. I seriously would order this pilsner all the time. We also split a bottle of Civil Disobedience Plum, which you buy by the bottle but it's really just two glasses worth and you have to drink it on site. That was deeeelicious. Tart but not too tart, plum flavor coming through. If we could've bought a few to go, I would have done it. My only complaint is they close way too early - or we would have spent probably about three more hours and about $200 there. read more

What can I say, it was a treat finding this spot and sipping what some say are the best brews around. We have had HF beer bought at Wiley's Store in Greensboro but finally, we hit the retail store and tap room. We loved it; small and intimate, no massive crowds and no hype, just good beer. The young man at the counter helped me choose a few beers. We were able to enjoy some of their ambrosial delights sitting by the rolling hills with stellar views. It was beer heaven. I loved E and my man loved his Everest. The names are great. I am not one to stand in line for 1+ hours as it is at some of the more visited breweries. My visit to HF was just perfect. Book online to insure you get in on the tasting. We were able to walk in on a slow Thur. afternoon. read more

I'm just reviewing this because I can't fathom how the average could only be 4. Best beer in Vermont, most coveted beer in NY right now. We planned a whole trip around trekking out to this brewery. Our dog could not go inside but she could be anywhere on the patios, grounds, or retail shop. We regretted not buying more beer to go once we had left, though we bought a good amount. The road was a bit crappy - if you have a mid size rental car in mud season like we did- well-that's a little rough but it's not so long (I think under two miles) you're on packed gravel/unpaved road. Made a lot of friends out on the patio on a perfect spring day. Every one was friendly and happy to be enjoying good beer. Staff made it easy- they have a ticket system for growler fills. I can't believe my bf left the growlers at home but we didn't mind purchasing a few to be able to bring home this good beer. Check their website for the sizes and types of growlers they will fill, if you want to bring your own. Also- I am SO GLAD they sell retail cans in 12 Oz!!! Who decided on these 7-9% IPAs we always need pint size cans? I've been waiting for the big can trend to end so I was really glad to be able to purchase very fine craft beer in 12 oz cans. read more

Sheer delight to finally make it to upper Vermont and the charming Hill Farmstead. It's definitely a drive, but thankfully it's a beautiful one through rolling hills and such. Once you're there Hill Farmstead is a sight to see; the beer to go area is set up in a barn off to the the side with the main tap room being adjacent. There's lots and lots of green grassy space with rocking chairs and plenty of room for lounging out on the grass. Lots of flowers add color to the area and with the rolling hills off in the distance it really is a delightful spot, especially for beer lovers who understand what Hill Farmstead beers mean. The service was great and the whole place was clean and well kept, with areas to dispose of glasses and extra portable restrooms throughout. The day I visited they also had a food truck outside selling lobster rolls. Only negative was that they were sold out of glassware the day I visited, but I did leave with lots of cans and bottles to go!!! read more

Finally made it to the mecca of craft breweries! Our small group followed our local uncle's advice and made the hour drive from Stowe. When you've got a chance to visit what many call the best craft brewery in the country, an hour's drive is nothing. We mostly went on faith, as this beer hasn't made it to Texas (that I know of). When we arrived we were relieved to see that the crowd was pretty light, which we were told is a rarity since this was a Saturday at lunch time. We went right in and only waited a few minutes before we were lined up at the tasting counter. An extremely knowledgeable and friendly lady gave us a bunch of samples, and told us all we wanted to know about the place, their processes, and their beers. OK, so how best to say this?....WOW! The hype is well deserved, and every beer we tried was clean, crisp, complex, and just beautiful. Needless to say we loaded up at the purchase counter, happily paying $18 for each 4-pack of 16-ouncers. Our group of four wound up taking home about four cases, and I had to buy a new cooler at Walmart to get it back to Texas without letting it get warm. (Worth it!) So now I'm the proud owner of two cases of George, Marie, and Society & Solitude #4. I'm trying hard not to drink a couple of them every night, with mixed success. Bottom line: a beautiful brewery, great service, and outstanding beer. Can't wait to go back. read more

Very cool brewery on a beautiful piece of land. Beer was good but I wish they had more selection to try. None of the bottled stuff was available for tasting. They had some pretty expensive bottles available for purchase, considering the price it would be nice if they allowed tastings before purchasong one. Also no flights available, but the bartender did let us try some samples at the bar. Went on a Saturday and it was very busy. Only 1 bathroom and about a 20 minute wait to get beer, so be prepared for lots of waiting. They had a delicious brick oven pizza food truck on site during our visit. read more

We had the beer, which was wonderful, of course, but the real surprise was the food truck, Making the CuTX BBQ. Out of this world! My mother had their lemonade with lavender, which was so so good. My mom is not a beer fan, so we were really glad there was a non-beer option. And the staff in the taproom were so gracious and kind. Probably a once-in-a-lifetime brewery visit experience for me, but it's definitely special. We arrived just before noon on a Saturday. Becca H. went straight to growler area, which took 1.5 hours, and a friend and I went to bottle/retail area, which took 30 minutes. The retail/bottle line, while definitely shorter than growler line, was surprisingly slow. There seemed to be only two people running this area. It was a good opportunity to schmooze with other fellow passionate beer people, who trekked to this off-the-cell-grid location. Once I made it over to the growler area, I realized just how precious people found HFB beer. You could tell everyone here was in it for the long haul based on what they brought (snacks, games) and how everyone decided to entertain themselves (lots o' beer). It's definitely awesome that the samples are free and that customers can get glasses or bottles of most of the beer in the main space. It too a long time to get to our number even though we got there even before it opened (1.5 hours in total), but HFB tries to make the experience chill and enjoyable. And how could I not mention the beer?! If you're serious about beer, you already know that HFB is killin' it and can master multiple styles. If you're coming here, you already know they mean business. So if you're reading this review and didn't know already, know that the trek is significant, but you'll be well rewarded. As other HFB Yelpers mentioned, you'll likely lose cell service before reaching HFB, but if you're really stuck, wait until you see another car, and then follow it. There is unlikely to be other streams of traffic in this area. (Truly, both Verizon and AT&T kicked about 10-15 minutes from the brewery.) read more

Best beer in New England, period. Their brewery is a site to behold. Grab an Edward, Mary or any of their excellent beers and gaze over the landscape. The brewery is remote in the Green Mountains but well worth the visit. Food truck on site, tacos during my last visit. Be prepared for a long wait for growler service, grab a number when you get inside. Be aware that there are two lines, one for bottles, cans and merch in the left door, and one for growlers and draft in the house with the porch. read more

Is it worth driving 7 hours to experience the hill? Holding back urinary urgency and risking speeding tickets? Spending so much money on beer in rural Vermont that your credit card company suspends your account on suspected fraud. The answer my friends is yes! When you finally travel through Middle Earth to the farm, you will feel like you entered disney world for beer lovers. The retail store has a solid collection with guest distributions. No limits and they box it up nicely. They take credit card but no Amex. The property is beautiful. A true getaway. Like you can see the freshly picked hops being Brewed right before your face. The woodwork is lovely. Service amazing Recommendation: Have their onsite bottled special. Yes they are nazis and won't let you carry the precious off site with you. They will open and pour it into your cup (or mouth) under observation. I thought about paying and making a run for it. Can you be arrested for that? I had the civil disobedience #5. Single wine barrel from 2012, blend of Ann, Art and Flora. A touch of plum. Slight sour. Soft. Delicious. Cost me $30 though. The spring in Vermont is back and so will be the beer brewery visits. Oh! Beer breweries are a winter thing too when it comes to Vermont or anywhere in New England. This brewery is rated #1 in the world by beer advocate. Their beer menu changes quite often. This is the one from 2017. Few of my favorites and a must try if you are a beer lover: 1) Double Nelson- their most popular. They have a small shop next door where they sell cans. Only 2 six pack packs to one person. Perfect taste of hoppy and malty. 2) Shirley Mae- if you are a coffee lover, this is what I'd recommend. 3) Farmer Wave- This is my favorite. Pale golden pour with moderate carbonation. Aroma is lime, citrus peels, light yeast, sour candy. Lime zest up in the taste when you first sip it. Lighter body. Perfect match for spicy pho noodles or unseasonally hot days. A half star off for the inconvenience and exclusivity of the place, it was so difficult to get reservations and when we arrived there were only two other parties there.
