Already a Kavanaugh Boulevard institution, The Hillcrest Fountain recently received a total makeover (2020). Gutted and completely redone, this bar still serves up only beer & wine and attracts the local neighborhood late 20-30-somethings crowd. No food, but plenty of surprises await you... AMBIANCE Low lights enhance the dark wood and urban chic furnishings. The classic long bar has modern comfortable bar stools and those cool hangers for a handbag below. Booths and two-top bar tables are spread out and don't overcrowd the space. Even when packed with people, the crowd flow is still ok. For a dive bar vibe, this bar is spotless and stays clean. Separate men's & women's clean bathrooms are in the back near the door to their outdoor patio (not open yet, but I hear soon). Thursday-Saturday after 8pm it becomes THE place to be at night in this part of the city. Patrons during the day and during happy hour are mostly regular locals. This is a great place to meet, watch a game, play a game, share intriguing conversation, and enjoy beer and wine. Ask the bartender to show you a peek of the speakeasy door. Or don't. There is one salty bartender. BEER & WINE ONLY That said, the taps rotate an excellent sampling of local craft brews and popular national brands at very low prices compared to other local bars serving draft beer. Happy Hour daily, but not sure of what the hours or prices are. Just ask a bartender. The new keg beer system is ice cold and they seem to have just the right amount of foam as to not waste the draft. Those bartenders know how to pull a proper pint! Many other beers in bottles and cans are available. Yuengling Lager on tap ran out, but they had Yuengling Light available. They don't stay out long and the knowledgeable and polite bartenders will offer an alternative, not just say, they are out. The local popular Flyway Blue Wing was on-tap as well. The other taps spread the beer spectrum from sours to IPAs. The wine by the bottle or glass offerings are clearly well thought out with pricing and vintages meant to fit everyone's budget and wine palate. Specials by the glass are above on a chalkboard. I had a great 5 oz. glass of a Russian River Valley pinot noir, priced excellent. ENTERTAINMENT Along the mural painted East wall is a classic bar shuffleboard puck-style game. It's the one with the sawdust alley and you glide the pucks. Very cool and chill. There are two full sized billiard tables in the front center area of this bar. See the bartender with your ID and they will hand you the billiard balls rack. Nice new large televisions above the bar typically playing whatever is popular. The Olympic trials were on and the NBA finals at the same time. Bartenders are cool and will put on whatever you want within reason. Music is probably the best in the city, with the bartenders making their own playlist vibes. I think Spotify Pro with no commercials. Super groovy music, not just some selfish rando personal playlist. It's actually very well thought out. The music playlists are probably one of the most surprising things about this bar. Not too loud, just the right tempo, and a great balance of things you know and new music you want to know. Kudos to the sound vibe. read more

Known as 'The Fountain" by locals, this small place is just plain fun. The atmosphere is laid back like any other Little Rock bar, where no one would feel weird walking in with a sweatshirt and shorts on. The door guys aren't jerks and the bartenders consist of cute girls who seem down to earth and would chat with you if you pleased. Although they only serve beer and wine, that doesn't hinder the locals from hanging out here. It gets poppin on the weekends; the two pool tables in the bar seemingly attract pool sharks, when in actually, they may just be as terrible as you are at billiards. Shuffleboard is also available if you so pleased wanted to play. I've been to this bar three times and have had a great time on all occasions. Downside is that people smoke there. (Well...could be a plus if you smoke.) Even the bartenders have a cigarette every so often while they're pouring your beer. By the time you get home, you raunch of cigarettes and gotta shower before passing out in bed. I know it's an Arkansas thing, being able to smoke indoors...but I'd rather go home smelling as sweet as I had before going out that night. Dive bar! Nestled in the middle of Hillcrest, which people tell me they're "not classy enough to come to." Bah! Smoky, loud, boisterous, surprisingly good service in a crowd. They're also rocking Shuffleboard and two pool tables, which is nice The bar is busy, wrapped with elevated bar tables, and the walkway between the two is the single path to and from... well, everywhere - the door, the patio, the bathroom - so walking from one end of the bar to the other can be quite the challenge if there's even a small crowd. We came in to ask if we could watch the GOP debates there, they said "We never talk about Religion or Politics, but we can put it on in back" and they did! So we stayed put and bought a bunch of beer as a thank-you! No food, but they have an interesting deal with both Afterthought and Canon Grill next door, where you can call for take-out and then bring it back in to The Fountain. Gives you two different kitchens to choose from with your bar night, but it does mean you have to go pick up the food yourself. Still, it's next door, can't complain :) All in all, not a bad spot. Not on top of my list, but not on the bottom either. read more

A decent spot to grab a beer or some wine. They only have a beer and wine license, so don't expect liquor. Up front is a few pool tables, some comfy chairs, bar, and high top tables. A cool mural overlooking the pool tables. There is a nice outdoor patio in back, that overlooks Kroger, ha. Still very relaxed and nice. After the last several years in Houston, it is all of the sudden strange to be in a bar that allows smoking. Not a big deal for me, but something to note. Just a handful of macros on tap, plus Boulevard and Marshall Brewing. They seem to have a decent wine list. That is it. Just a nice spot to have a drink, and I can see myself coming here often if I lived in the area. I love this neighborhood, and this bar fits in. read more

The fountain has poor layout. The deplorable use of interior space is detrimental to having fun and getting around in general. It's fine if only eight people are in the bar that night, but steer clear on a weekend. The area just beyond the pool tables will become severely congested. The bottleneck will happen between the bar (east) and seating area (west). Thus, there is difficulty getting drinks, going outside, and going to the restroom. Everyone in the bar will spend the rest of the night talking about how crowded it is. I suppose this could serve as a good icebreaker if you're desperate for an opening line. The fountain provides a decent selection of beer and wine, but no liquor. Parking is ample in the Kroger lot. They have shuffleboard (score!) and pool if you're into that sort of thing. The bartenders are friendly. Go there if you must. read more

Quick facts: 1) Indoor smoking (good and bad thing) 2) No liquor or bar food 3) Spacious outdoor patio and seating 4) Pool tables and shuffleboard I'm personally not a huge fan of this place because of the indoor smoking and they don't have whiskey - for many, that may not be an issue. This bar feels like you took the Town Pump and dropped it in a building on 6th street Austin, Tx....if you know what I mean. The crowd is pretty mixed, and qwerky. This isn't a place to get crazy, its very relaxed. There will be some hipsters and beer snobs here, so don't say I didn't warn you. I'm rating this place a 3* . I believe the bar accomplishes what it meant to, but i'm removing a star for lack of liquor and another for poor job of ventilating the smoke. read more

ok --get ready---last time i was here it was a smoking establishment--- wait,smoking in a 'wine' bar. next the wines are written on a chalkboard and not in a clarifying way- i mean break it down..have 'italian' and 'spanish' not simply RED and WHITE- ahem and someone said something about the door people i dunno bout you but the owner made fun of my friend...funny thing is my friend is the owner of a world class winery- the owner said something about his grateful dead t-shirt...huh? well since the whole don't judge a book by its cover thing is out on that ..look the place is fun...Hillcrest could do better it's not a classy wine bar it's a bar that has beer and wine-and yes pizza d is down the road go tell'em cecil sent ya and pay my tab shib shab but hey i like to sit outside sometimes too and they have a lovely view of the kroger parking lot so i'm a gonna get generous and pump up another star on that one i will say that when i do go back to the old neighborhood i stop in there to catch up on who's still single- read more

This place is the epitome of a dive bar, minus the liquor. Make sure you are craving beer or wine before you enter this dimly lit, smoker-friendly establishment. I was happy to see that they have pool tables and a Shuffleboard. Not a huge place, but large enough to not feel cramped on a busy evening. If you are not a smoker, or if you don't like the smell of smoke, I would definitely not recommend this place. I think I smoked the equivalent of 4 cigarettes while sitting at the bar for 30 minutes. This seems like the type of place you would meet a business acquaintance to discuss some secret operation, like in House of Cards. Or just a great place to go after work for a drink with friends. read more

If you're looking for a party bar for taking shots and gettin' rowdy, this is probably not the place for you. However, if you're looking for a place with amazing friendly service, super laid back atmosphere (you get everything from suits to workout gear), and a good crowd, this is your joint. It's smokey, but there's a patio outside for an escape from that. Happy hour is the best time, full of regulars who are more than willing to talk about the blues jams that are playing or the game on TV or your recent breakup, whatever comes up. On the weekends it's crowded, but there's a good chance a group of folks will pull you in and before you know it you're joining in the air drum solo from Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" and wondering how you haven't spent more time in this bar before. :) read more

Wow, Yankees and westerners don't like smoking in a bar? What a surprise! This is the reason we keep outsiders at a distance here in the natural state. If smoking insults you so much in a BAR, then perhaps you should reevaluate where you spend tour free time.
