The best thing this Ace has going for it is the location which is a five star. The staff is not very knowledgeable so for that I'd have to give them a three star. But, they also don't try very hard so even though their knowledge is not there (as compared to, for example, the Aloha Ace Hardware) instead of seeking help from other staff in the store or working more to understand the problem, they basically say, "good luck with that". I'm writing this review from multiple experiences so I'm summarizing a bit but, for example: sometimes I come in because I'm doing a DIY project and I need something, let's say landscaping stakes. I'm sort of making this up just to illustrate the point. So I explain this, I want to make my own landscaping stakes. Here's how this would go at the Aloha Ace Hardware: Helpful hardware wo/man: "Ok, so you want something to stick in the ground so that you can hold things down like drip lines or landscaping cloth?" Me: "Yup, exactly." Helpful hardware wo/man: "OK, let's go over here and look at our wire. How about this, will that work?" Me: "Well, I think it's too small, it won't be strong enough" Helpful hardware wo/man: "Hm, ok, let's look over here. Here's some aluminum flat stock. Could you cut this up and use it like stakes?" Me: "That's a good idea but it looks like it will be too expensive." Helpful hardware wo/man: "Have you considered using wire coat hangers?" Me: "We only have wood and plastic hangers". Helpful hardware wo/man: "You know, I think you can get those on Amazon for something like $15 for 100. Would that work?" Break. Ok, so here's how that whole thing would work (theoretically, again, I'm just summarizing many different experiences, this particular one is made up) at the 25th ave store: 25TH Ave hardware wo/man: "We don't sell landscaping stakes." Me: "Oh, ok, do you sell anything like them?" 25TH Ave hardware wo/man: "Like camping stakes? No, we don't sell any camping gear." Me: "No, I mean, do you sell something I could use to make these things?" 25TH Ave hardware wo/man: "What are you looking for?" Break. In reality, I don't think this is a staff problem it's a management problem. Here, there is not your typical Ace mentality of "tell me your problem, I WILL help you" it's more like: "Tell me what you want and I'll tell you what aisle to look for it." I want this store to be successful but unfortunately, it's sort of a last resort for me and when I go it's fully with the expectation that I'm in this not so big warehouse store, on my own. Sometimes, I feel like I'm better off in a huge warehouse store, on my own, since there at least I have more options to look through. Overall, I would really give this store a two star but that's such a poor score and I want to help the store survive so I'm going to game the system and give it a three star. read more

The family loves having a hardware store around that doesn't force them to drive down to the Home Depot/Lowe's megaplex on TVH, but as has been mentioned here before, location is kind of all this Ace has going for it. We've been shopping here for various items since it opened, and you're clearly paying for convenience. Bags of weed-and-feed, soil, and ready-mix concrete are all readily available, but are easily more expensive than you'll find at big-box stores. But that convenience is often worth the price, especially if you aren't buying a lot of the product. A look around the floor, however, makes me wonder if management isn't making up for bad seasonal decisions on its everyday items. Every winter, the place stocks sleds, snow shovels, and ice melt as if we're in Minnesota. It's Hillsboro, Oregon: Beyond the elevations, you're lucky to get maybe a day's worth of snow or ice here a year. Then there are the holidays: The store just brings in a bunch of pre-cut trees, piles them in a fenced area that typically houses grills and lawn furniture, and makes no attempt to tell customers that they are there for purchase. By January 11, they still had 13 trees bound up and on the lot. There was no signage on the store indicating they were selling trees and no indication inside that somewhere behind an entire floor of December grills and smokers, there's a tree lot. "Stocking stuffers" linger up front for months. Novelty tchotchkes line shelves to checkout unsold and collect dust until next season. And the items you ARE looking for? All somewhat locked away behind half-shut glass enclosures for tools and hardware. The word is that this place got absolutely pounded by organized shoplifters when it first opened and it's made none of the adaptations that surrounding stores have since the pandemic (changing layout, obstructing easy exits) to fix the problem. Instead, each customer is just asked at loud volume if they need help finding something. The staff asking that question is a mixed bag at best. Some are regulars who know their way around both the store and the equipment and can make tasks like mixing paint seem relatively straightforward. Others seem more preoccupied with striking up folksy conversation, harassing folks in the aisles, and--on the rare occasion they're actually needed--doing as much as they can to prolong the process as possible. During a recent Sunday visit, mixing a small can of paint somehow required three different employees and absorbed an amount of time long enough to allow a nearby megachurch to let out and have half of the congregation use the place as both a coffee circle and day care. Amid their conversations with those parishioners and their it-takes-a-village approach to congregational parenting, the staff couldn't be bothered to release one small can of paint from the shaker. By the time we received it, the can arrived with multiple queries about the color-indicating dot on top, stirring sticks, and openers. I've come to genuinely dislike the experience of visiting this store and can see why it's in the same shopping center as two bars and a liquor store. The degree with which both its inventory and staff can try a customer's patience both outweighs the convenience of its location and can drive even local teetotalers to a quick sip of cocktail-grade anesthetic. read more

Ace is not the helpful place. I had a 5$ reward that loaded when I came in, but when I got to the register, it said there was an error. I asked the cashier if she could see it on her end since they ask for our number and she said nope. It then listed an 800 number to call, so after 5 minutes of prompts, the guy said he could see but couldn't help me. He only said it would show up eventually. I told him it was already there and went away, but he just answered the same. I will never come here again because they're too disconnected. Franchises are always a bad choice for the customer. Two hands doing different things. Without the 5$ off, anywhere else is cheaper and will treat you better. read more

Brand new! This Ace took over where the Marshalls used to be. I went to the grand opening this weekend and see myself coming here a lot in the future. The aisles are well stocked and have a great variety of goods. From gardening, to tools, to paint, to cleaning supplies. Even canning and general kitchen utensils. If you need something for your home, this store will likely carry it. I'm also guessing that if they don't carry it, they will happily order it for you. The staff were friendly and the store was clean. I'm hoping this will stay the same in the years to come. read more

The manager Brian always very helpful and friendly each time I visit store. I badly needed some canning jars which at the time were out of stock. Brian stated when they received them he'd give me a call. He took a minute out of his time to contact me they were in. I dashed down to the store he had them at the front counter. I go here from time to time because of the convient location, 10/1/23 will be the last time. Today I ran in grabbed a few things and went to the checkout. The man in front of me was checking out and he asked about the price of the product because it was shown as on sale. The girl at the register asked a guy on the floor to check and he came up and confirmed the sale price. The girl at the register proceeds to lecture him that he needs to tell her something is on sale and that these things don't update themselves (the prices I assume) he simply replied that he also was unaware it was on sale and he went back to work. When I went to checkout I placed my items on the counter and the girl looks at me and says, how much are these? I told her I dint know, I just grabbed what I needed and didn't look at the price, her reply was to lecture me on how if I dont know the price how is she supposed to know what to charge me. I couldn't believe how rude she was about it also. So I just looked at her and said, ok we'll go somewhere else. The idiotic look on her face tells me she is not used to anyone not putting up with her BS. Bought a 2-pack of padlocks, but bought a smaller style than I actually wanted because they were out of the larger size. Tried them but they were, in fact, too small for the gate latch. I was by another Ace so went in to return and buy the larger which they had, but they said no returns from another store - another ACE HARDWARE store, and they told me that I could return it at the one in Hillsboro where I bought it. However, the Hillsboro store (WHERE I HAD JUST PURCHASED THEM) told me they didn't take returns, even for an exchange! The nasty little girl behind the counter then told me to get out!! What?? Not a good place to shop. Poor customer service at this location. Overall ACE stores are pretty good, but this one is not.

So this morning I call and ask if they have regular mouth canning lids, yes we do. So I ask if they could please set aside two packages. My husband who has drove 17 mi one way is there now. No we can't sell you the lids because in the meantime someone placed an online order and they are being held for them instead. So after traveling that far, only to find out that they will not sell them to him pisses me off. This store is the worst Ace Hardware that I have ever shopped, they are mostly rude and not helpful. I'm excited to have an Ace nearby, but was disappointed. I've come to expect excellent customer service from Ace, but didn't find it at this one. Had to walk up and down the aisles looking for someone, then when I found someone they seemed put out, and really weren't helpful. I had this experience with more than one employee. They tried to act like they knew what they were talking about but when I told them I'd researched the issue, they clearly didn't believe me. I went into Ace in Hillsboro Oregon this morning, I have been a loyal customer since their first day, and I went in today because I needed face masks or something to protect me from this awful virus, so that I can properly care for my 91 year old mother, I have health issues and so does she, and I was talking to the Manager and he said that they were all out, but he did not tell me that they had ventilator masks until someone ask for them, and then the manager allowed this person to buy all of them in stock, that is hording and it is wrong in the face of this crisis to allow someone to hoard life saving products is not only wrong it is abominable, and I will never shop there again and I will report this to the proper authorities. read more

It felt like I was talking with old friends and it was my first time in! I was excited when the new location opened close to me. When I went in to look for a certain kind of pliers, I was disappointed that everything was behind a locked cage. Since I was unable to pick up anything and look at them, I was forced to find help. I asked the employee why everything was locked, it's not like you're selling jewelry. His answer shocked me. "The manager told us that when customers stop stealing, he'll think about removing the locks!" Remember, this was the grand opening. I found this extremely offensive.
