After coming down the coast to visit Newport, we were looking for a good brunch spot along the way. We visited the Hilltop Cafe Bistro, and may I say, what a great experience! If you're from the Portland metro area and visit the coast, this is a nice place to try out. The portions were generous. The pancake order comes with four, and they are BIG. The potatoes were cooked with onion, which gives them a nice taste. The bacon also had a great texture; usually, when you try new diners, the bacon tends to be more squishy. If you're not a fan of that, then this bacon is for you!The biggest surprise was their sourdough toast. It had a crunchy crust, a fluffy inside, and great taste--you can definitely tell it's made from scratch every day! Overall, the staff was great. One thing to keep in mind is that there isn't much room; I'd say it holds about 40 to 50 people. Most dishes are around the $15-$20 mark, but for the generous portions and great taste, Hilltop Cafe Bistro is a 9.1/10! read more

We went for early dinner on a Thursday and it was not crowded. We sat near the kitchen and there was this smell, kind of like a dirty dishes smell, familiar to me from having worked in kitchens in the past. They have a TV on with still images showing. Service was friendly and we got our food pretty quickly. I liked my spinach salad. It was huge so I grabbed a to go box for the rest. This is right on the main road and it can be a little tricky to leave the parking lot and when it is busy I suspect it is hard to get a parking spot here. They have a lot of tasty sounding menu items so I would definitely consider trying this place again when I'm next in the area. read more

We were looking forward to eating here as it was recommended by a friend. Sadly, omelets need to be cooked low and slow, otherwise the eggs will be rubbery, and that is how ours was served. French Toast was burnt, but they refunded it. We were there for breakfast and obviously the bathroom on the right had not been cleaned, it was pretty yucky. First time here, even though we have driven by many times in the past. On a weekend stay in Yachats, we decided to take the short drive north to Hilltop. Based on the reviews, we decided whichever side we got it would be the baked beans, not the slaw or potato salad. We split the Spicy Chicken Bacon Ranch wrap. It was VERY flavorful! The perfect amount of Jalapeños. Great choice! We loved it! And it was HUGE. So glad we split. And, yes, the baked beans were awesome. This will definitely be on our "coastal rotation". read more

The cottage fries if you enjoy a baked potato and some black char and not crisp at all then you'll like these cottage fries. The crêpes are not a thin crepe. They're a pretty thick wheat, looking falling apart crêpe. The smoked salmon was pretty mediocre inside. You would expect more on the Oregon coast. The cappuccino was all milk. Orange juice was not fresh squeezed. That's for sure. It's one of those places where it looks pretty good on the menu but the actual finished product is coming from an irritable looking cook. Not a whole lot of smiling going on from the service. It's pretty 'have-to' serve and get out kind of thing. I don't know. I guess I'm expecting too much out of Waldpprt. read more

The food was good and fast and the servers were attentive. I also loved that they didn't take any manipulation. A lady sitting next to us was trying to get free food. She finished her entire plate, then told the server she didn't like it and wanted to send it back for something else. The server politely informed the patron there was nothing she could do for her since the customer had eaten everything. I do like it when businesses don't allow themselves to be taken advantage of. It was a cute little restaurant and the cost was better for the quality than we experienced at other places in the Yachats/Waldport area. We'd come back. read more

Ordered from the right place for dinner tonight! Enjoyed the cedar plank salmon with ravioli, risotto and fresh veg along and a bowl of chowder. The salmon was fresh, perfectly seasoned & had that yummy cedar flavor! Risotto creamy, veg perfectly sautéed. The ravioli apparently has crab which is lost by the strong parmesan cheese. Otherwise, perfect meal. Hubby got the ahi sandwich, no blue cheese, with wasabi sauce and our kid had the farmer burger. All tasty bites. We will be back! read more

We have driven by here endless times but decided to give it a whirl for dinner. What a surprisingly good meal. I ordered the stroganoff on a whim and it was super good. My husband had the halibut, it was also good. The woman serving our neighbors was very informative about dishes [I shamelessly eavesdropped] which helped. She was very friendly. Great place to grab lunch on a Saturday afternoon - - especially if you have your puppy with you. This is an order at the counter type of place - - decent sized menu with lots of yummy sounding options. And gluten free buns!!! I ordered the fusion burger and it was huge. My plan was to cut it in half and tackle one side at a time but I failed - - one bite and it was all over the place. Still delicious though. I fully expected Hilltop to be as disappointing as many places have been with minuscule portions, and ridiculously high prices---as is common to our fair Newport area. I was completely wrong about Hilltop! I am still packed from one of the best Paddy Melts on rye. Caramelized onions sweet as honey, two large perfectly cooked burgers, and rye that tastes like rye --- not paper. I would not be ashamed to bring anyone to this eatery. My wife's crab melt was a bit expensive but priced much better than a Georgie's or Moes. She loved it. This and the best baked beans I have eaten anywhere in my 72 years living around this country. Meal cost 17 bucks and 6 hours later I am still sporting a full gullet like a pelican. read more

Cleanliness of the restaurant was great. Menu was simple and everything looked really good on the menu. Server, was polite and respectful. I noticed on the menu, if you order the basic ham n eggs breakfast with toast and home potatoes it's $16. If you order the same off the ala carte menu it's only $14. Food quality was lacking: Biscuits n gravy were cold and the biscuits were just shy of burnt and crusty on the bottom of them. Potatoes that were served weren't even edible, half the potatoes either were over-held in warmers or were yesterday's potatoes mixed with freshly made today. The texture of half of the potatoes were dried out and horribly stale, other half was pretty tasty. I didn't ask for replacement because there was only 2 people working and I'd figured the replacements would be just as bad. Sorry, but this was not a great visit read more

The first time I came here I thought the crab melt was divine, including the sides. No more. Tried to eat there Thursday. There was only one other table occupied. The server warned us not to order a hot drink of any kind because she was the only one there. (!) no matter that it was a cold, foggy, windy, drizzly day. Then the food came. While the crab melt looked fine, it did not seem fresh. But the worst was the potato salad I ordered. She set down a dish of what at first glance looked like sour cream. There were lumps in it that apparently were potatoes. I said I couldn't eat it and she did not acknowledge how gross it looked, just asked if I wanted something else. It's a simple rustic building with a small dining room in two halves, divide by the entrance. We were seated quickly. The menu had starters, sandwiches, pastas, steaks and seafood. The one server kept an eye on all tables and was responsive to all. After answering a few questions we had, she took our order for bbq ribs and a French dip and hot tea. We were excited to try this place out as it's always talked about. It was nice, cozy, clean, and the waitstaff was kind. The prices were on the steeper side ($18-20 for burgers and $25 for plates). My husband and I each ordered a different kind of burger with a different side (I ordered potato salad and he got coleslaw). For the price, we got a burger on the smaller side and an ice cream scoop worth of our side. We thought, "well it looks great so probably worth it anyway!" Everything was lacking flavor. Very bland. No salt or seasoning whatsoever. The burgers were overdone and burnt and that was the only think we could taste on both the mushroom burger and teriyaki/pineapple burger. There was not even ketchup offered or on the table. Just a blah, flavorless, burnt burger. The potato salad had zero flavor so I loaded it up with salt and then it tasted fine. The cole slaw was very bitter tasting. It was all weird. We really wanted to like this place and have it be our new place to go. But we won't return. Maybe it was a fluke and a bad cook the day we went but we couldn't understand what people were raving about. read more

This place is a great stop on your way to Newport. The food is great! The portions are HUGE, and the service is the best. We came here 3 out of our 4 day stay. We loved the breakfast sandwiches, the ham breakfast sandwich was our favorite. Lots of meat. My husband loved the Reuben burger. He got it twice!! The pastrami was super yummy. Hilltop Cafe Bistro is a must go on the oregon coast! The food was homemade and delicious. I would recommend the breakfast potatoes and anything with the berry compote! You order and pay upfront and they bring you your food. The service was quick and friendly. There was plenty of seating available on a weekday, but I'm Sure they get busy on the weekend.
