We had food delivered on an afternoon we were tired and crabby. The kid got a teriyaki burger with tater tots, add avocado and a side of barbecue sauce. He also got a marionberry lemonade. He was happy with everything and ate it for late lunch and then again for breakfast the next day. I got a turkey bacon swiss melt with tomato on sourdough bread with curly fries. I forgot to ask for ketchup, we were out, so I swiped some of my kid's barbecue sauce. Which he grumbled about but hey 1) I paid for it and 2) there was a lot. Do you want a burger? Well this place specializes in them And vintage old school fountain drinks. It's a 50's themed diner. With an arcade. Plenty of space. It's got paper menus and a QR code menu for each table. And at the end of the meal if you don't feel like paying up front you can scan the code and pay your bill there. We found this place years ago when we lived on the coast and it has become a tradition for us to stop here when we are in Newport. This isn't a gourmet restaurant by any means so don't come walking in here expecting a fancy meal, that's the beauty of it. You come here when you're looking for a nice juicy burger and a shake served with a side of nostalgia (they still have kids meals that come in little cars!) There are many options on the menu but our favorite route to go is the hand pressed burgers. You can order them in many different sizes too! It even goes up to a one pounder! I got a 1/4 lb bacon burger with crispy tots. My husband got a 1/2 lb bbq bacon burger with seasoned curly fries. There are 4 options for fries which is also a nice bonus! Our food was delish and service was great. We got to meet the owner and she told us a bit about the history of the place and their family. Went in with the husband and in laws since we are on vacation. I had found Flashbacks online prior to heading to Oregon. The decor is really neat, I loved looking at everything. The music was spot on for the vibes. There are so many different burgers to choose from! I also love that you can choose what side of burger patty you want..1/4lb, 1/2lb, or 1lb. You then have a list of sides to choose from, I picked the onion rings. Finding good onion rings is difficult, they always have weird aftertaste which I think is the oil not being changed. Not here! These onion rings were amazing! You also have to tell them specifically what you want and your burger. They are customized to reduce waste. The tomato was the best I've had on a burger from a restaurant, you could actually taste it on the burger. Their special sauce is a fry sauce if you're looking for some. The strawberry lemonade has also made the top of my list for best lemonades. They put so many cut up strawberries in your drink, it was so good! Unfortunately we were too full to get a milkshake but we will be back to try those out! The service was great! Our waiter was funny and helped us with any questions we had. He also made sure we had everything we needed for our meal. There were zero complaints from our table. Everyone loved what they ordered, clean plates all around. I would definitely recommend trying out Flashbacks. Update: Went back for some appetizers and milkshakes. We ordered the mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce and a basket of onion rings with special sauce. We all know how I feel about their onion rings. The mozzarella sticks are delicious...I think their marinara sauce is house made because it is so good and very different than any I have had before. We then ordered milkshakes, I did a mix of mint chocolate chip and cookies and cream...you've got to try this mix if you like both of those flavors. My dad and sister got the chicken strips, but the chicken strips do look a little unappetizing because they use the same batter for breading fish (it is breaded separately from fish). Every time I'm in Newport I go to a chowder place or seafood place- my bestie has told me about Flashbacks for YEARS but I've never made it in, until yesterday when we were there together and that's where she wanted to go for lunch to celebrate. The menu all looked good- she got a pizza, I got a burger, and other people at the table got other items. They raves about the ranch- I hate ranch usually. I tried theirs and immediately needed ranch for my side salad. Best ranch I've ever tried. The patty melt, cheese fries, and pizza were delicious. The rest of the table loved their food too. Was service super fast? No- but we knew that because the sign said they had ONE server and ONE cook. We were a larger party, and that always takes longer too. Not only did the food all come out hot and delicious but even short staffed, they were excellent refilling drinks and maintained the best customer service friendly attitude from some of the crazy going on. This is a family owned place- the husband was serving and taking orders, the wife is responsible for a lot of the recipes and does a lot of prep. They had a busser who was great too. I'm completely impressed how they can handle the restaurant with such a small staff and do it so well and with such great attitudes. I can't wait to go back here and try some other things on the menu! An absolute must stop for me now! Update: I've tried to give them money several times but they are always closed. This place is a fun and great one. We went several times during our trip to Newport and were not disappointed at all. Burgers are big and nicely dressed. Ignore the previous negative reviews. People just complain just to complain. Anyway, yes there was only one server working, but the youth of today are entitled and always demand too much instead of working a job to gain work experience. The server was really nice. The chocolate milkshake was good and it tasted like a hot chocolate. I had the Sourdough Melt, which was really tasty and the fries were good. We tried this spot on a whim. Very glad we did. I wasn't very hungry so just had a grilled cheese with the waffle fries. Grilled cheese was flowing with 3 different cheeses and the waffle fries we're easily the best I've ever had. Spouse had the cheeseburger with fries and was very, very happy with his meal. We ordered 2 burgers with "crispy" bacon and it came out looking uncooked in some areas. It tasted like just meat no seasoning at all. Waffle fries had little to no salt. Service was scarce and took a bit to order. Headed to reinter to pay and lots of burgers left on tables not eaten. Then the cashier asked how was everything but when I told him all he said was I'm sorry. Why ask me if you're not going to do anything about my bill. I went back as I promised and tried several different items. We got chili, pizza, a burger, popcorn shrimp, fries, a shake, and the fish n chips. I have to say while walking to my truck the pizza smelled amazing. It taste great but its something you want to eat when you get it. The fries here are by far my favorite thing along with the chili. The burger we tried was really good and the buns were a plus. It's not often that you find soft buns and these were all that. We loved it so much we will be back Sunday to try more. This is the new location of flashbacks Fountain & Grill in north Newport (as opposed to where they used to be down in the Southbeach area...) I love the potential of their new digs -- great black & white tile floors -- a Happy Days jukebox (okay, it's not "Happy Days" -- there's no such thing -- but that's what I thought of as I scooted into the red booth and ordered my late lunch.) After a long day of errands and taking care of details, this was exactly what I needed. Cute, friendly, and the opposite of serious and formal.... they've got a big menu -- full of snacky goodness (many fried and spicy wonders, burgers, pizza, and even salads-- gasp) -- and an ice cream case just waiting to be turned into shakes and sundaes.... I wasn't quite hungry enough to go for the full monty on this trip, so I skipped the frozen treats and went straight for a burger -- a burger version of a French Dip, loaded with grilled onions and swiss cheese with a side of fries and a cup of au jus. It was a small burger (they use 1/3lb patties, according to the menu) but it was plenty, and the fries were crispy and hot -- and snapped when I bit into the first one -- just perfect. There was no salt on the fries -- just fried potatoes, but they were surprisingly sweet and good. I mean, REALLY surprising. And really good. I told husband about the place when I got home, and he was excited that I'd found a good burger and pizza joint -- as that is his favorite date-night kind of spot...especially since they have ice cream, lol. My daughter and I stopped in at Flashback's this evening for dinner. We received a prompt friendly welcome, were seated moments later and our friendly waitress had water to the table right away. She was friendly and attentive throughout the meal. My daughter asked about milkshakes ad was told she could have one in any flavor of ice cream the offered... something like 30 flavors. She asked if they should make a orange sherbet milk shake and they said a cream-sicle... of course with a little vanilla in it, too. It tasted wonderful and was presented equally well in an old-fashion milkshake glass topped with whipped cream, sprinkles and a cherry (and the rest in the metal milkshake cup. The onion rings were thick and crisp... perfect. The Teriyaki Burger and Fish 'n Chips hit the spot. The chowder that came with the meal was thick and well seasoned with lots of clams. We played a few games in the arcade and dropped a couple quarters in the jukebox. Over all a fun experience. We're thinking about stopping back in tomorrow for sundaes. read more

I really wish Yelp allowed rating in 1/2 star increments because this place is firmly at 2.5 stars in my book. The food is decent. The prices were a little high but about what you would expect for a tourist area. The waitress was friendly. The jukebox was broken. The 50s theme they are going for didn't really work for me. Anyone can put in a jukebox and hang James Dean pictures on the wall. If you are going for nostalgia I think you have to find a way to summon the soul and vibe of the period. This place is amazing. Everytime I go in there we get greeted by the door before we even walk in. They have great food and a wide variety of choices to eat. I always get their burgers. They hand press them and make them the old fashion way like they are suppose to. My son loves going here and they have a great arcade room for adults and children. I've been wanting to try this place for a few months, but they are closed a lot. Today I finally got my chance. I ordered a double cheeseburger with bacon, and onion rings instead of fries, with a small water to drink. It was $14.00. The onion ring substitution for fries was $2.00. Had my blind eyes been able to read the tiny print on the menu, I'd have known that and just got fries, but alas. Waited about 20 minutes, no big deal, no stars taken off for that. Got my food, went outside to eat. I tried the O rings first, and was shocked at how lukewarm/almost cold they were. For a place serving "fresh food", I expected hot O rings, or at least something close to that. They were some of the worst rings I've ever had. Stopped eating the rings and onto the burger. I didn't see any bacon poking out, so I opened it up to check. No bacon. Also no pickle or onion on the burger. I didn't know that they only came with lettuce/tomato, because once again my blind self couldn't read the tiny print on the menu that states that. To me, a burger ain't a burger if it doesn't have all the fixins. At that point, I was ready to go back inside and get my food redone. However, I didn't, because I didn't want to wait another 20 minutes for food, I was really hungry. I was also on my motorbike, and it was getting dark, clouds were brewing and it looked like it was going to rain. I don't like riding in the rain. To be fair, the burger was OK, not great. It wasn't very hot, lukewarm really, which surprised me. I figured a burger fresh off the grill would be a lot hotter than that. All in all, I won't be back. I don't like paying $14 for a fast food meal and having it be lukewarm, having the order wrong, and it simply wasn't any better than Burger King. At least now I can cross this place off my list of restaurants in Newport to try. read more
