"Hilltop's owners, Georgia and Kevin Read, wanted their third Park Slope venture to be a jack-of-all-trades for neighborhood dining -- the perfect spot for a first date, a family dinner, brunch, a quick beer or a sweet treat." First, how did I hear about this gem? I was dining at Giovanni's Brooklyn Eats, two nights ago,our table next to us who are fellow foodies were talking about how they are loyal patrons of Giovanni's. I state " I know Giovanni @20 years and am also a loyal patron.. We traded favorites as in best pizza, bakery and diners. She asked me " Hey, have you been to Hilltop Tavern?" I said, "Not yet". She gave it rave reviews and as she spoke, I was already bookmarking in Yelp. Today I decided to take a trip to Prospect Park West and see for myself. Second, I'm also always on the hunt for a great turkey burger and Hilltop offers grass fed turkey burger. Lastly, I have dined at the owner's restaurant, Alchemy, and enjoyed the turkey burger there as well. The interior of Hilltop reminds me of an old fashioned diner that is my kind of place: cozy bar, quiet ambience, menu that offers delicious options that will satisfy any palate. I read that the benches are pews from a church in New Jersey. The exposed brick wall , wooden tables, and gallery style wall art make it so inviting. There is a Lunch menu that offers soup, half sammy, salad and fries served until 4pm. The soup choices today were Potato leek or lentils. There are comfort food choices such as BLT, crispy chicken sandwich,,grilled cheese, omelette and salads ( Butternut squash, yum) Kevin, the owner, served my turkey burger deluxe to me. ( very nice!) The turkey burger is a generous size, served with a delicious side salad dressed and fries. I dived right in and never looked back.. this is a perfectly seasoned juicy, very important as TB can be dry, burger. The fries were plentiful and crispy. I savored every bite. I told Olive, my wonderful server, that finding a great TB is hard and I schlepped from Bay Ridge ( not a long schlep, lol) to dine here. Now, of course, I will be the one who raves about HT as I am drafting this YELP review. The other reason HT is a gem: located near 3rd Street entrance to Prospect Park. All I can say to Georgia and Kevin, three times the charm! They also own Hamilton on Fort Hamilton Parkway. Looking for a fourth location??? You know I'm going to say it: Bay Ridge? Was in the area for a movie at the Nitehawk cinema nearby and had time to kill and was hungry so I stopped by after researching this place through... whaddaya know yelp! Wanted the steak and eggs or shrimp and grits but was too late for brunch for the former and early for dinner for the latter so I settled for steak and fries. Service was excellent. Sat outside because it was a beautiful day even though the sun was beaming down my neck but that's not their fault. Had their version of Aperol Spritz(forget what is called) and a Hugo Spritz (much prefer the latter). My issue was the steak and fries. While it was cooked to my liking,the steak was quite small. It was cut in four little strips.I had more fries than steak. This isn't worth $38 in my opinion. I also had their fish tacos which came in three and was delicious. Spicy enough. Lovely spot for brunch! Cozy indoor and a few tables outdoor. Staff are friendly and efficient. While it does resemble a typical park slope eatery, this block tho... reminds me of a small town feel, with like brick sidewalks and mom & pop shops leading up to Hilltop Tavern. We came early enough, lots of seatings available and were seated right away. Got coffee to start, unfortunately didn't see they could make espresso... until it was too late. The coffee was not great... very much, "NYC cart coffee". IYKYK As for food, my son got the omelette with bacon, ham & cheddar; comes with home fries and he loved it, finished the whole plate (he is 16... they eat a lot at this age). My husband got the Swiss breakfast which comes with this crispy fried potato crust topped with smoked salmon and capers... with a side salad. I'm not a fan of smoked salmon but loved the crispy potato! I got the brioche French toast comes with strawberries and bananas slices. It was OK - came in a cube shape - too thick and the center tastes undercooked (I know it's bread but like raw yolk' ish). Got a side order of fries - those were crispy and deliciously hot - as it should be. So, the only set-back is the 4% extra if you're paying by card. Do people still carry $100+ cash nowadays? Otherwise, you are pretty much stuck paying that extra 4%. And then on top of the 20% tip... now you feel like you're being forced to tip 24%... bc you don't want to penalize the staff with a 15% tip. Phew. Tough choice. read more

The ambience was very nice, service a little rushed, and my dinner, a real disappointment. I ordered the chicken schnitzel and should have realized that the accompanying horseradish cream was a red flag. First of all it tasted awful and made the dried out schnitzel even less appealing. The meal came with a tablespoon of cold, bland sauerkraut, a pile of what seemed like day old mashed potatoes so heavily salted to be inedible, and a very small scoop of a tasty mixed salad. My family frequent this restaurant quite often and we are happy to continue to do so due to the fact that the service , food and atmosphere is simply perfect! The owner is always on- hand to help and assist and greet which always goes a long way and the staff is consistently cordial and friendly! From the awesome happy hour ( M-Thu only ) - great wings and fries and mini burger specials and drinks to boot to their always reliable dinner options that spans everything from delicious burgers - fries - specials - with solid appetizer selections. For this review we sat at the bar ( my wife and I always do when our son is out and about ) and ordered the very delicious shrimp with mash potato's and I ordered the excellent roasted chicken dish with mash and string beans - the chicken was cooked perfectly and very tender and moist which is never easy to accomplish bit they do here ! Convenient spot for dinner close to the park with quality menu pieces. The wine and Arnold Palmer were actually pretty good! The steak was dry (but my dad ordered well, so what else should he expect)! Pasta was filling and flavorful! I love love Hamilton so I couldn't wait to try Hilltop Tavern the next time I was home. Such a cute and cozy vibe. I love the rectory benches. We tried the brunch menu. Delicious! The corned beef hash was flavorful, not salty and the kind of comfort food that will keep you coming back. The poached egg hollandaise with smoked salmon is another winner in my book. They don't serve spirits but they are so creative with the cocktail menu! If you're in the area, definitely add this place to your brunch bucket list! My partner and I went for a walk in prospect and just as we were getting hungry on the way back home we happened upon this place. I was seated right away by our server Sage, who was very attentive and gave great recommendations. The whole restaurant had a very cozy hometown American dining feel. We chose a booth near the back which felt very private for an open room. We ordered two Soju drinks along with the crispy artichoke salad with chicken and fish & chips. The drinks were mixed well, and very tasty. My partner gave me a forkful of her salad and I loved how balanced in taste it was. The fish and chips came out with a perfect light batter and paired well with the tartar sauce provided. The fries were so addicting I found myself aimlessly finishing them before I could really get a grasp of how much I ate. Even through feeling full we wanted to satisfy our sweet tooth so we consulted Sage on what would be the most popular option. We ended up trying the lemon tart dessert upon her recommendation. So mediocre. Chicken "schnitzel" was really a cutlet pounded thin and tossed in the fryer. It was bland and tough, and it was a chore to saw through the crust. The aioli lacked garlic, lemon juice, salt and pepper. In other words, it might have well come from a bottle of Costco mayo. If you don't know how to make things like aioli and schnitzel, then DON'T PUT THEM ON THE MENU!!!! read more

What a GEM! I cannot believe I've lived around the park this long and never been to Hilltop Tavern! My family and I sat outside and had an absolutely lovely dinner. The service was outstanding from the hostess to our servers and beyond. Everyone was so friendly and attentive, we never had too much or too little at our table. We started with drinks and fries. My espresso martini was AMAZING, so good I had a second. My husband loved his lemon mocktail and our toddler happily devoured the crispy fries. The vegetarian matzoh ball soup was divine-- just the right amount of salty and savory. The chicken schnitzel was an 11/10 according to my husband, the mashed potatoes and truffle fries were also decadent. We couldn't have had a better time, and we are looking forward to trying more menu items next time! read more

We've been here before and the food was even better than before! I had an arugula and roasted artichoke hearts salad with garbanzo beans and shaved Parmesan with a delicious dressing. My husband had the potato leek soup which he said was very tasty and rich. My second course was spicy shrimp with spinach on polenta - also delicious. I live near one of their other restaurants (Hamiltons) and eat there pretty regularly and was happy to discover that some of the same amazing staff are now at Hilltop Tavern. The menu has some of the same items as Hamiltons (shout-out to my favorite crispy artichoke and arugula salad) but also some amazing additions that I wish Hamiltons would have (because sometimes I'm too lazy to walk 20 minutes). The brook trout almandine, roasted cauliflower, crispy artichokes and burrata all stood out. Excited to return to try the brunch. read more

Came here for dinner with my family and we enjoyed it quite a bit. They have built in outdoor dining around the restaurant so you're not outside on the street eating car fumes. The inside is pretty cozy but can still accommodate a bigger group but definitely call ahead and make a reservation for that. We had the crispy artichoke for appetizer and it was delicious! Lightly fried without any batter you really get the artichoke taste. I had the trout that was served with cauliflower rice and it was really good. The trout was cooked well and flaky. My husband had the braised lamb shank over polenta which was very tender and flavorful. Although I'm not a big fan of the polenta. My daughter had the kids pasta with burrata and loved her meal as well. The cocktails were a hit or miss for me but the waitress was an absolute sweetheart and very attentive and ended up making me another drink. FYI: I did NOT complain about my drink the lavendar royale. She asked me what I thought and if I liked it and I told her it's not what I thought it would be even though it had all the ingredients that I loved. I guess it just didn't go well together. The 2nd drink she made me, the hamilton royale was delicious. Will definitely go back and try their brunch menu. read more

A great addition to the neighborhood! I was pleasantly surprised when I tried this new spot the other night. We had one dish from the menu (shrimp & grits) and a special (cod)--both of which were delicious! Perfectly prepared, with nicely matched sides. The price is very reasonable, and the quality is top-notch. We had a couple of drinks (cock- and mock-tails) and both were good. Wine by the glass was not overpriced. This was a great place for early dinner with the family. Happy hour prices for drinks and appetizers go until 6 and there is a kids menu and some good desserts. Because they are across the street from a church all drinks are wine or soju based. We will be back for another meal. read more

Hilltop is a hidden gem. Start your meal with the crispy artichokes and you can't go wrong. The steak frites and the shrimp and grits are delightful. For fans of cassis, I love the kir royale. Just discovered Hilltop, a relative newcomer to Prospect Park West and a delightful surprise. I'm not sure which is better -- the food or the service -- because both are outstanding -- and the place itself is warm, welcoming and cheerful, with bright fresh flowers on every table. Brunch was delicious -- a fresh approach to avocado toast, artfully assembled with thinly sliced radishes and pickled onions blending the slight heat of the chili and the eggs were poached to perfection -- though one shouldn't ignore the omelet, also cooked exactly to taste. The service is also warm, patient and extremely accommodating -- I asked many many questions, which were answered with charming attentiveness. And as the old Zagat's would've said -- it's probably the best bang for the buck in a wide area. read more

Was excited to try this place as we're big fans of Hamilton's, but found it very disappointing. We both ordered burgers--a safe bet we thought since Hamilton's were so good--but they were serviceable at best. It was early Sunday evening and not very busy, and the burgers came out in literally about two minutes, and both cooked medium tho we requested medium rare and medium well, so perhaps they were just sitting under a heater. Whether that was the case or not, they lacked the flavor and quality of Hamilton's. The fried artichoke appetizer was bland. The fries were good. And although the place is new, the table wobbled terribly. All this would be forgivable, but with a beer and a glass of wine and before tip this came to about $75. Maybe it was just a bad night, but we're not planning to return. read more

Was disappointed because the food was delicious but the service was really poor. The waitress made off-putting comments to our group (we were seated outside and someone drove by playing loud music, we all laughed and she said "I wish I could be that happy" with a blank look on her face...), we had to ask for things multiple times to different servers, and all staff did not seem to know what was going on in terms of serving our table. At the end we ordered desserts and ended up waiting so long some members of our group had to leave, so we asked the status of the desserts and they just brought us the check. We were also not told about the automatic large party gratuity (we were a party of 6). We would not have tipped that amount as the service did not warrant that rate. I hope this was just an off night and maybe our server was going through something, but this was really disappointing as I chose this restaurant for a special event and it really put a negative feeling to our night. read more
