Average curry experience here. Came in with a few friends to get some curry for lunch. I got the spicy chicken curry and it wasn't spicy at all! The flavor was ok, but I found that the rice was pretty mushy. I also got a samosa and it was super bready. Most of the large samosa was straight bread, and it was pretty dry. I could be really skeptical when it comes to an exotic cuisine. When I had it at first, it was alright, and then it really grew on me, and now, I come here too often. They give you a lot of food for the price. FOOD: (5/5) *Authenticity: the food here is not strictly from a certain country but a fusion of Tibetan, Chinese and Indian food. Trust me, it's a good combination. *Menu: - Curry: they have different types of curry. My favorite is the Spicy Chicken curry. They give you small sample cups if you want to try. The curry goes really with their signature Himalayan sauce (the orange sauce). The cilantro topping adds good freshness to the rich curry sauce. They do half and half for the curry also (for example: half chicken half vegetable curry). - Fried rice: the fried rice is dry (which is a good thing for fried rice) and flavorful. I love it. - Samosas: I love their homemade samosas. The samosa comes with the green sauce. I like it better with the Himalayan sauce. - Momos (steamed dumplings): It's similar to Chinese dumplings but with some Tibetan twist. The momos come with the chili paste sauce. It's even better if you ask them to add some soy sauce to the chili paste. - Chili and Chung King: Chinese style stir fried meat (chicken or pork) with some peppers. It's not as flavorful as it looks. I'm not a fan, but people seem to like it. - Lassi: don't miss the homemade yogurt. Grab one from the fridge when it's available! Everything about this place. Blacksburg needs places like this. Just reiterating my undying love for himalayan. I now always get half lentil soup, half veggie. The ingredients are all listed, which, as someone who has food allergies and is vegetarian, is amazing. The Lentil soup has an excellent flavor. You can get half meat half veggie if you so desire! Don't forget the sauce. Everything is made with love here. Hwy 55 is next door and I will never eat there. If anyone chooses that business over this one, they are making a huge mistake. They're expanding their menu and incorporating Bingsoo -- I love it. The owner is one of the most kind people you will ever meet in your entire life. His story is on google. To say that I was disappointed is an understatement. Perhaps Himalayan Curry is different from Indian curry, but when I searched Yelp for Indian food this place came up. I ordered the Chicken Curry and was looking forward to a rich, creamy flavorful chicken curry. I wondered if it was going to be green curry, red curry or yellow curry? Unfortunately the Chicken Curry turned out to be chunks of flavorless chicken swimming in a thin, watery bland gravy - much like a brown gravy. It had absolutely no curry flavor to it so I don't know why they even call it curry. The accompanying rice was good, but that is hardly an accomplishment. When I saw all of the sauce I asked if they had naan to which the reply was no. I always try to eat local and support independent restaurants but I regretted my decision to eat here. read more

Beef Himalayan Thenthunk was outstanding. It was a cold rainy day and this soup warmed my soul. Sliced flank steak in a clear broth with Napa?savoy?cabbage, spinach, and these amazing homemade noodles. They reminded me of my Polish grandma's chicken soup noodles- all misshapen, but so yummy because they were made by hand. The soup is not spicy at all; however,you can add the accompanying sweet chili sauce to kick up the flavor even more. I would've enjoyed a bit more spinach in it though. read more

Hidden gem! I always felt like Himalayan was a lowkey place to eat at, and I hope this review gives them the more exposure! Himalayan probably offers the best curry in town, no doubt. For the low prices and the portions that they give you, it's definitely a bargain and you'll leave with full stomachs for sure. I personally like the beef or chicken curry. What's also unique is that they have bingsu (although I've never tried it, I hear it's good). Himalayan is a great place to go to even if you don't have a craving for curry. It's a solid choice for anyone who's hungry and doesn't want to spend a lot of money. read more

Literal shards of dry chicken and my friend had some nasty overcooked beef that tasted questionable. The way they present the food it looks like someone threw up on the plate. This is my go to spot when I want a good meal at Tech. The curry is always so warm and filling. Perfect for any weather and they have added a lot more variety to their menu compared to when I first started school. The sauces they have on the table are my absolute favorite, especially the orange sauce. The owners are always nice and personable and give a little extra when they see and recognize me. They also treat their workers very well because I have a good amount of friends who work there. They provide a very hospitable and family-like setting with great food, definitely come try any item on their menu! read more

Very solid, and cheap food! I ordered the Sweet and Spicy Pork Curry and it was quite tasty. The portion size was very good, and filling, especially for the price. If you are someone who has a smaller appetitite, you will have plenty left over too (luckily they give it to you in a to-go box). My brother ordered the Chicken Curry and it was only okay (which is why I am giving this place 4 stars rather than 5). I feel like this place can definitely be hit or miss depending on what you order, so if you don't like a certain item, I wouldn't write off the restaurant right away. We also ordered the Classic PatBingsoo for dessert, and that was great as well. I have never had BingSoo before, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. If you aren't aware, BingSoo is a dessert with sweet red beans, a sweet malt-like powder, mochi, and bran flakes strewn throughout a big bowl of shaved ice. Love this place! Himalayan is what you would imagine a local restaurant to be. It has a very homey feel once your inside and the workers are very friendly. I feel like most people don't know about this place but they have a huge variety of options from curries over rice to noodle soups to fried rice. It's a plethora of options for any taste bud. My goto order is the pork curry over rice and I absolutely love it. The vegetable curry is also great and there are a ton of nutritious veggies in it! After you get your curry, I'd recommend putting the red sauce over your meal. It's delicious and a bit spicy but super addicting. Best part is they serve great portion sizes. My wife and I have been coming here for lunch for the past few years. The staff are very nice and polite, always so accommodating to customers. The food is very good for the prices they put up. One of the only Nepalese restaurant in Blacksburg, the food was mediocre but it is filling for the price. A lot of Asians come here just to have the famous chicken biriyani. If I went to tech I would come here all the time. The portions are huge for the price and the food is already ready when you order so it's super fast. I got the butter chicken and I ate it basically as both lunch and dinner. It's really good! We ate at Himilayan Cafe for lunch when visiting Virginia Tech for our older son. We ordered the Pork spicy curry, chicken curry and beef curry. We planned on sharing family style but were dissapointed because we agreed that all three dishes tasted the same.. The meats seemed to be slow cooked in the sauce and absorb much of juices so they tasted very similar. Curry was watery and very bland. We had to add sriracha and it was still not very good. I love all type of curries and have been all around the world including Asian and Hawaii and have gotten better tasting food for a lot less. I mention Hawaii because they use the same currency and are usually more expensive because its an island and touristy. After reading the 5 star reviews, I was very excited to eat here, but now I feel sorry for the students as they likely have very limited options on food. Its hard for me to believe that $8 for white rice and a scoop of bland curry on a styrofoam plate is thought of as cheap.. I read a review that said that the curry tastes better at night because it simmers all day so I will give one more chance at night. read more

Well, add me to the long list of believers! While I can't dispute west other reviewers have said (everyone has their own experience), I can say that this place is well deserving of 5 starts. This quaint little gem is located just behind Panera in the main shopping strip. Inside you'll find a very simple menu, nicely decorated (although probably from what was here before), very clean restaurant. As others have said, the menu is basic - chicken, pork, beef, and veggie, with sides of lentil soup and keefer. The main courses are $5.50 ($6 for beef). I ordered the Pork Sweet Spicy Curry and was not disappointed. Huge serving, especially in r the price, lots of rice covered in a delicious sauce and about a dozen or so pieces of pork. Contrary to others experiences, my meal was very flavorful with a complex layering of spices. The owners are some of the most welcoming and friendly proprietors I've met and are quick to welcome and wish you well when you leave. Overall I can't believe it took 6 months of living here to find this place. I'll definitely be back soon! read more

I've tried everything on the menu at Himalayan Curry Cafe. My advice is to go for the pork sweet spicy curry, try the lentil soup at least once, and don't forget the kheer. Tibetan curry is less heavy than Indian curry (not as creamy) and spiced a bit differently. The chicken and beef curries here are rather bland, and the veggie curry is even more bland (and possibly made with just frozen vegetables). The lentil soup is great, but there is a sharp herbal flavor in the beginning that I still can't figure out (perhaps it's the black mustard seeds) and may not be to everyone's taste. The kheer is always good, although some batches have more carrots than others (I prefer more cardamom). Something I learned by accident is that the curries taste better at night because (presumably) they've been simmering all day. It's a working hypothesis anyway. The staff are super nice. They keep extra-spicy sauce behind the counter, if that's your thing. I find the pork curry to have a perfect amount of 'kick.' It's cheap, nutritious, and generously-portioned. Where else can you get a huge heap of fancy basmati rice as a part of a $5 meal? read more

However, I would recommend Himalayan Curry Cafe to whoever likes curry as I believe it's one of the best in the area. Food Quality: 4 stars Typically order the Sweet and Spicy Pork Curry, which I think is the best option. It has good flavor/taste and the portion size is very fair, as I am typically pretty full afterwards. The menu is very simple, as it basically is a decision between pork, chicken, beef, or vegetables. The only complaint I have, is the amount of meat they serve per portion. They are inconsistent with the meat portion and can be frustrating at times. They have two different sauces you can add to the curry, which can add extra flavor (sweet and/or spicy). Service/Experience: 4 stars No complaints with the service. Plenty of seating space inside and no trouble finding parking out front. read more

I've been meaning to try it since they opened, and finally went in today for lunch. I had the butter chicken, which may or may not be a temporary special. They gave a generous portion of rice and the chicken dish, which was delicious. The chicken was thigh meat (I'm almost certain) which is usually not my favorite, but in this dish it was great. I don't have a lot of experience with this style food, but I definitely got an authentic vibe. I recommend you try it for yourself. Very good value for the price. I will be back. read more

Previously used to have dumplings with less filling but now it's sufficient. I love the dumplings here. The biriyani here is good. Rice and pork/chicken is also good. I personally prefer pork+rice/ chicken momo. Both of them are favorites. If you are looking for cheap food with decent taste, Himalayan Curry is perfect. It's a modest place to eat but worth the money you are paying. Also, the curry rice option, as well as biriyani, comes with spicy and non-spicy. When they say "spicy", it's not as spicy as I am used to eating but it's better than the non-spicy which taste sweet. I got to try their bingsoo which seems to be their specialty. read more

All curry is sitting in in warming pans and the rice in the cooker. Had to wait for the chicken dumplings and well they were bland and very thick dough. The pork was unidentifiable and most pieces were dry and hard. Curry was fine but no real depth of flavor, just chili. Portions were better than average for price. Service was good.
