After a long day of activities in Kailua, Indian food sounded like it would definitely hit the spot! This location has a signage that says "India Cafe" - they said they are changing it to Himalayan Kitchen. It's located next to Donut Kong and the book store if you get lost. I liked that they offer a bunch of different types of bread, and got some garlic naan that paired well with my butter chicken curry - chefs special! They have a lot of different options on their menu and I definitely want to try more curries like the tikka madrass. read more

Let me start by saying that I'm from an area that has an enormous Indian community, and tons of amazing Indian food options - that being said, this was HANDS DOWN the best Indian food I've ever had. The meat was seasoned to perfection, and tender. The sauces were savory, with a hint of sweetness, and THE NAAN. The naan was possibly the best bread I've ever eaten in my life. By the looks and taste, I believe they make it themselves, and it was incredibly good. A $3 serving could have easily served both my husband and I - but we love bread, so we ordered 2. Overall, FANTASTIC Indian food, incredible naan, and the service was wonderful as well. Ordered at counter for take out (there's no dine in these days), they said would take 30 min. Took 70 min. Jeez. Worse, when after 45 min we asked the status, they rudely lectured us on how they were doing their best and each meal is prepared fresh and blah blah blah, instead of just giving us their best updated time estimate. There weren't that many people ordering. Just a normal weeknight, no big rush or anything. Not sure what was the problem. Maybe they were prioritizing door dash orders. I've been wanting to try Himalayan Kitchen for a while now. My parents had tried it before but only the location in town. Since this one is a 10 minute drive from home, I decided to come here by myself after a quick swim at Kailua District Park. The place is quite small but with a location in that complex, it's bound to be pretty small. You can get your own water, silverware, and take-out boxes; not a problem at all. I ordered take-out and it took approximately 15 minutes. Not too bad. I was basic and ordered the chicken tikka masala with a spice level of 5/10. It was good but I wish I had ordered it with a spice level of 7/10. I will be back here again (probably during summer) to try another more interesting dish with more spice. The sign outside the establishment read "India Cafe" so don't get confused. Parking can be hard to find depending on the time of day. read more

I stopped by their Kailua location today, unknowingly 5 minutes after they closed. One of the staff members opened the door and graciously offered to still take my order. He was incredibly nice, patient & explained the various dishes to me & helped me find what I might like. I got the chicken tikka madrass w/ rice & a side of samosas. The food was hands down incredible! So much flavor. They scale their spice level 1-10, so you can be sure to get the spice level you really want. Decided to check this out when a yelp alert notified me of a new place for himalayan/nepal cuisine. I am so glad we tried this place because the food is actually really good. Thus place would have been a solid 5 if it wasnt for a few things. Yelpers please note that although on here it is called "Himalayan Kitchen" you will never find this yummy place by this name so look for "India Cafe". I also recommebd parking closer to the end of the Time supermarket and walking as the parking tends to be sparse. The staff here was very friendly. Ordering food here takes a bit of time as it is partial service. You basically order at the cash register, pour your own water, grab your plates and forks and napkins and find a seat. There are really only 4 tables as fellow yelpers mentioned so hopefully you can grab one. When you have a toddler in the mix this place is hard to eat at because you have to get everything and there are no highchairs at the moment but they do bring out the food to you. Their Chicken Tikka Masala and Chana Masala are delicious. My only complaints were the portion sizes for rice. It was assumed that all of our meals come with rice. All the rice comes in a bowl but it was barely enough for 3 and if you want more you have to pay for it. Also, their spiciest level was not spicy at all to which I was actually able to try it (and usually I cannot handle spicy). Lastly, I found a very small piece of chicken bone in the Chicken Tikka Masala and so glad it was not my toddler who came across it. Aside from all this, this place is so delicious and the guys that run this place are very friendly. This place is the worst Indian food on the island. We have been ordering from them for a while now and each time, there is almost always something wrong with the food. This time, the mutter paneer was tossed into a very food color red "tandoori sauce" & paneer was chewy like plastic and chicken Tikka madras ...seemed like they took the sauce from another dish and tossed the chicken in it and seemed like old chicken from earlier in the week. I had not looked up their hours as when I got there they were closed. Even more eager a few days later, checked to ensure they were open and made my call. Excited that someone answered; I proceeded to place my order of their beautifully constructed Himchuli Chat, toasty jalapeño garlic naan & roti, savory vegetable samosas, popular butter chicken curry, and the biagan bharta. Whomever answered the phone was not very friendly and the ordering seemed very rushed. I was concerned they had not gotten my order correct, especially because I kept getting cut off with them asking if that was it. When I was finally done ordering, they told me it would be about 25 minutes and just hung up the phone without a goodbye. I put my best thoughts forward in thinking they were just busy. Finally arrived a half an hour later and approached the door. I was greeted by a young female who was on the phone the entire time. Sometimes I could not tell if she was talking to me or the person on the phone. She asked my name, rang me up, I tapped my card, and she handed me my bag and walked off to continue her conversation on the phone. I say conversation because it was definitely not another order she was taking. Eager to suffice my cravings, I immediately opened the bag in my car. It all looked and smelled amazing! Tearing pieces off the roti and jalapeño garlic naan I was instantly satisfied! Both were Perfect! Popped a bite of vegetable samosa and was continued to be Wowed! I felt we were really on a roll here - - - I knew I had to dig into the himchuli chat next. First bite seemed refreshing from the yogurt, however an extremely salty after taste followed. I really could not get passed it. I closed the container and figured I would try again at home. Upon arriving home I made my little mela display of all the items on my counter. The only items I had not tasted yet were the biagan bharta and butter chicken curry (family favorite). I am saddened to share that in the end I honestly cannot get pass the extreme saltiness of the biagan bharta, butter chicken curry, and the himchuli chat. It was just beyond me how this could have happened. I have never received a dish at this level of saltiness anywhere, not even from them in the past. For a few moments I thought it was just my own taste buds, however my son confirmed that it was really salty. I covered it up and placed in the fridge, sad that my husband would also be coming home to eat this meal. Is it enough for me to call it quits here? I don't even know at this point, I can't tell you because I know at some time they were always serving up amazing flavor. During this Quarantine time, my neighbors and I switch off to get take out. We were all craving Indian food & we decided on Himalyan kitchen (formerly Indian cafe) in Kailua. We called in and the man was busy but very nice. I got the skewered Chicken Tikka & Saag Dip & they ordered the Butter Chicken, Basmati rice & Garlic Naan. He said 20 minutes to be ready which is how long the Kaneohe to Kailua drive is! When I got there, his set up is a table blocking the entrance and you rang the bell. Menus already displayed on tables and utensils/napkins. Truly a take out experience. Uber eats was waiting & I had to wait 10 minutes for him. I had 3 orders, and when he forgot my Chicken Tikka I had to wait more but he comped me Samosas which were delicious! When I got home the tribe was starving. The Chicken Tikka is cooked skewered but taken off and large pink pieces on a bed of Basmati rice, side salad and a vegetable red sauce for $14.95. Saag dip is a tasty greenish cheese dip served with Naan for $5.95. Just wish we got more for our money. Butter chicken was a hit for $13.95 (served alone) Samosas had a yummy dipping sauce, and I definitely would order 2 more next time. Overall, it was worth the drive over. The wait time is a bit long, probably due to being under staffed but the food isnt bad. I got take out with my girlfriend and we enjoyed it.

I'll start off by saying that the food is great and previously (pre-COVID) we had a great time here. Friendly service. Delicious food. Everything! However, we ordered a big order last night from here for my sister's birthday. We called it in and they said it would take 35 minutes. We got their maybe five minutes earlier and the food wasn't ready. No big deal. We can wait. However, it wasn't clear how to wait: should we wait in the car? There was also a line. So one person waited in line and another waited in the car. The person in the car called after waiting for an additional 10 minutes to ask what was going on and if we should wait in line or the car. Whoever answered the phone, a woman, answered "There's a FUCKING line. That's we we encourage everyone to practice patience during this time." Whoa. That was really uncalled for. We were shocked at the behavior of this person. It was a total turn off. The person waiting in line did get our food, 30 minutes after the time they said to come. And to be fair, the owner(?) a man was the one who gave us the food, and we remembered him from last time from being super friendly and professional. He apologized for the delay giving us extra rice. My issue is whoever spoke on the phone with us and swore to a customer. We were just trying to see what the COVID protocol was for this store. Had they told us to come in 40 minutes or even an hour, it wouldn't have been a problem and then we wouldn't have been waiting, asking them what to do. It was uncalled for and upsetting to be spoken to that why and kind of dampened the evening of my sister's birthday. Especially because we really loved this place and think the owner is so so nice. Now, I'm nervous to go again after being treated so poorly. I don't want to slam this place because they deserve high reviews for their delicious food. The place is really small. There are about 4 tables. It's really crowded. People are constantly coming in and out. The service is extremely slow. They didn't even acknowledge us for 20 minutes. We finally ordered and waited 40 mins and the food still wasn't out so we asked and he said another 10 mins. The rice was cold and old. The tandoori chicken was really dry. And the vegetable komra didn't have the usual ingredients in it so i think they brought me a different dish by accident but I didn't want to wait again for them to change it so I just ate it. So the third try was the charm! The food was perfect this time now that we know our spice level tolerance and we've figured out the regional differences that are a must with Indian food. We ordered 3 dishes again, butter chicken, matar paneer and chicken tikka madrass. All good, but the standout was their madrass sauce. A new favorite for us. I'm so happy to give these guys my money. I'd really love to see this location improve their eat in dining experience by becoming full service for drinks but for now I'll take the awesome Indian food in Kailua. One thing to note, this is a 2 man operation. So patience is key. It's one guy taking your order, bringing food out, dealing with to go orders and cashing everyone out. So keep that in mind. Our food took about 45 mins. Also since it's a small and busy restaurant you may have to call a few times. It's a small kitchen and seems that there is one cook from what it sounds like. The person working the front was so friendly! The food is so tasty and good portions! We got butter chicken, naan and rice! The butter chicken was full of flavor (a bit on the salty side to me but my family said it was perfect for them!), naan was huge and so tasty and the rice was perfect! This low review is mainly about the slow, slow service. We arrived to place a take out order around 6:30 p.m. right after someone else who had just placed a take out order. We ordered butter chicken and rice. The cashier said that it would take 15 minutes - when in reality, it took us about 40 minutes to get our food and it was only after my husband stood by the cash register and waited. We understand that they could be understaffed; however, we find it completely disappointing and unacceptable that our two piece meal took 15 minutes longer than the guy who had ordered take out right before us, and about 10 minutes longer than a couple that had sat down and ordered 20 minutes after we had initially placed our order. All we would have wanted was an honest wait time for food and even an acknowledgement that food was taking a while to make. We wouldn't recommend others to not try this place out. Hard to beat this place in Kailua! A cozy atmosphere and delicious, authentic food - can't ask for much more! My wife and I just moved back to the Island after 2 years in the Middle East and this is the closest we've come to the delicious fare of the region. It was so perfect eating the food we've missed so much. The restaurant is tiny - maybe 4 tables inside and a few outside and the staff is wonderful and super friendly! The restaurant is BYOB and all of their dishes are great - we tried the jalapeño/garlic naan, fried naan, chicken tika, korma curry, the curry of the day, and the veggie fritters... sooooo good! My favorite Indian/Himalayan food spot. Everything is amazing, but I always get the chicken tikka madras, plus a handful of various other things on rotation so we have some leftovers for a while. I could eat this stuff every day and be perfectly happy. It's that good. A contender for my favorite restaurant. The staff has never been anything but kind with a welcoming demeanor and positive vibes all around. My compliments to the management for finding such pleasant individuals to run this particular show.
