Use to drive all the way up to the north shore from town almost 10 years ago just to have their burritos so having the Kailua location nearby is even better! Parking: street side Seating: 5 smaller tables that hold 3-4 people each. There is bench seating outside. Service: ordering was quick & easy. Actually receiving our food took a little over 30 mins but it was a weekend and they were slammed! I'd happily wait every time because the burritos really are that good. Well, you can only boycott a good bagel for so long. The chewy, creamcheesy goodness was more than I could resist today, so I gave Kono's another try. I'm a business owner and to me customer service matters more than anything, even when the experience isn't perfect. Kono's stepped up. Everything went well from order through delivery, and the Tube Bagel was fresh and delicious. They were out of something, but called to offer a choice of substitutions. I would share a photo but it's currently passing through my digestive system and not feeling very photogenic at the moment. Funky little shack on the North Shore that served up great pulled pork and potatoes. Friendly service, great food, but the downside is minimal indoor seating. It was a rainy afternoon and we ended up sitting on a damp patio set, but worth it. The potatoes tasted like they were cooked in the juice of the pork and they were out of this world. The pulled pork plate was served with a good portion of the pork (tender, moist, and YUMMY), the potatoes (or white rice), and a salad. Will definitely be back!!! read more

Before starting a day at the beach, Kono's definitely starts it off well with a good cup of coffee and bomber. The burrito is always full of delicious eggs, cheese and potatoes. Specifically got the chun which had the Kahlúa pork and bacon. The bacon was super delicious. It always comes with a side of salsa and I definitely recommend trying it both ways. It does give it a nice extra flavor with the salsa. They only have in-house coffee, but it has a nice yummy macadamia nut taste that made the coffee taste extra yummy. Service was great and if you're feeling ambitious enough, you can get a tattoo of the surfer pig to get 25% off. It's been awhile since I've last been to kono's in Kailua. I don't recall what I had as the last visit was just after the pandemic was over. They have three other locations on the Isle: Kapahulu, Waikiki, and Haleiwa. Their breakfast burritos are called Bombers and I requested the Haleiwa Bomber for takeaway, which consists of Kalua pork, eggs, potatoes, and cheddar/ Monterey Jack cheese blend. Every Bomber has the smoked, shredded pork. How can you not have their Kalua pig in some iteration...fantastic. For $16 it was a hunger bomb of the best kind. Breakfast, brunch, or lunch...an excellent option to order. It was around 1000a ; so there were only guys ordering takeout. I was watching the NFL on my phone but the wait time could not have been more that 12 minutes. Street parking and in the back...on the Mauka end of Hekilli. It was the best day for everyone but probably because right after they charged me for my breakfast burrito the electricity went out.... so I feel like I truly can give a full review. But I will say the staff was so kind and they tried their best with what they had previously prepared. After a not so good experience at Waikiki location, I was apprehensive to go back to Kono's. However, glad I gave it a second try at Kailua. It was fairly dead on a Monday night - 530p. Service was good. Tried their veggie wrap, which was actually pretty good. Fresh ingredients and the dressing went well with it. The pork quesadilla was good also. Flavorful and juicy. The sour cream was a good compliment. The highlight of our meal was the pumpkin spice milkshake. Hubby and I stopped in for lunch after a morning at nearby Kailua Beach and had a nice lunch at Kono's. We split the pork plate which included their 12-hour roasted pork, rice, mac salad, and green salad. We loved how tender the meat was, and especially loved both the guava BBQ sauce and papaya dressing. The shop is fairly small, however we were able to find seats. The girl at the counter was very friendly. Unfortunately they were too backed up with orders so shortly after our arrival was placed they had to temporarily stop taking orders. After a recent group walk, one of the members brought some breakfast burritos from the Kailua location. I had never been there nor eaten food from there so was looking forward to trying it. There were vegetarian ones and the only one with meat was the chorizo so I opted for chorizo. First thing you notice before unwrapping the burrito is how heavy it is & once you unwrap it, my reaction was WOW - that's a huge, thick burrito! Had to sit there a couple of minutes to figure out how to eat it because of the thickness. Decided to cut it in half with the only "knife" available, a wooden coffee stir stick. Besides the chorizo, this burrito is packed with egg, bacon, and cheese, along with salsa sauce on the side. It didn't taste bad but for me, the chorizo had too much of the smokey flavor for my liking. Because of the size of the burrito, I ended up eating just half. Later on, I had perused their menu online and saw they had quite an extensive menu including plates, wraps, sandwiches, smoothies, and milkshakes. I went to this location two days ago to order a burrito and a cup of coffee. The coffee pot was empty and I was hoping that they would have a fresh pot, but the girl unscrewed the lid and poured some sludge in my cup. I took one sip, she didn't notice, but I tossed it in the trash, I wanted to be polite. Then I got the burrito and ate it on my way to catch a flight. My friend was dropping me off and I did not feel so hot. I felt nauseous and thought I better not get on this plane. She took me back home and I got food poisoning and was violently ill. The health department should check this place out. Something is not right in that kitchen. Highly highly highly disappointed. Not only did I miss my flight, but I spent the next 24 hours violently ill. My first warning should've been nobody else was in there eating. There was so much variety in the menu but we finally decided on ordering the Kapahulu tacos and pork plate lunch. Tonight I had ordered the sliders, a nachos plate and 2 milk shakes online. Upon arrival my husband was informed there were no chips so they allowed him to order something else. Which then he ordered the kalua pork plate. We opened the kalua pork plate and the rice was so hard and dry, it was inedible. The sliders that we ordered had little to no coleslaw inside. Though I really like their food eating at 5 O'clock maybe wasn't a good idea. I took my mom to eat someplace I thought she might enjoy but the Kalua Pig Plate was just clumps of dark overcooked pork with a stringy skin like piece underneath. Although I refused his offer to refund our meal (as we did eat the burrito), he basically insisted and gave me a full refund anyway and vowed it would never happen again. FOOD (Alex): I ordered an Old School sandwich with slaw on the side and add cheese. The sandwich was honestly nothing special and does not warrant anywhere near a $15 price. The pork inside the sandwich was dry and lacked any flavor. It tastes like they just shredded the pork then cooked it with no seasoning. I expected a smoky taste and tender texture, but that was nowhere to be found. The bbq sauce in the sandwich was seriously lacking and I had to go up to ask for more because i could barely taste it in the sandwich. The grilled onions were a nice touch to the sandwich and I have no complaints about that. A little more onions in the sandwich would be nicer..... The cheese and the bread of the sandwich no complaints for me both were good and do their part in the sandwich to me the meat and sauce is more important. All in all the sandwich was really mediocre especially for the price the customer pays. Also they forgot the slaw on the side. FOOD (Hayley): I got the avocado BLT, also does not warrant a $15 price tag. I was mostly biting into lettuce... There was barely any bacon or tomato. If you look at the attached photos, you'd have to zoom in a lot to see bacon and the thinly sliced tomato. The sandwich itself was okay. It was nothing special and felt like something I could easily make at home. I also got the limeade. I appreciate that it is freshly hand squeezed. However, it tasted like water with a hint of lime. It lacked the bright and tart flavor that limeade usually has. Pretty disappointed because it cost $5 for 12-16oz SERVICE: Pretty okay service. The lady that took our order wasn't particularly nice, but she wasn't rude either. We ordered at the front and then proceeded to choose our seat. Seating is also first come first serve. Right after we ordered, the lady who took our order announces to everyone else in line that it's going to be a 30 minute wait. A good amount of people left and we would've left too if we knew... When the food was finally brought to the table the lady offered to bring a cup of water even though it wasn't asked for (which is still a nice gesture), but she forgot to bring it along with the slaw which was to be put on the side. Of course I didn't care much for the slaw and cup of water, but the forgetfulness and lack of attention to detail is a reflection of poor customer service. I'd also like to mention that when asked about the menu the lady taking orders at the counter informed me that every "bomber" includes eggs in the burrito. The menu makes no mention of this detail at all and was only discovered after asking. I think the menu needs to be reworked to inform the customer of this as Some people either have allergies or don't prefer certain ingredients in their food. AMBIANCE: Overall, very nice beachy aesthetic that I'm sure tourists love. The interior of the store has many large chalk surfboards inside with nice font written in colorful chalk describing the different "customer pick" meals which is great newcomers like myself and my girlfriend who are not sure what to order. The colors of the font is poppy and stands out which is definitely a nice addition in terms of store ambiance. OVERALL: The food and drinks were disappointing for the high price point, and the service lacked the attention to detail that would justify the cost. While the atmosphere was inviting, the quality of the food simply didn't deliver. For these reasons, this experience only warrants a 2-star review. read more

One thing that I'm always craving is a good breakfast burrito. At Kono's they have "bombers" which come with eggs, potatoes, and a blend of shredded jack and cheddar cheese wrapped in a warm flour tortillas. These breakfast burritos are HUGE. I usually get the Chuns Bomber with kalua pig and bacon Pro Tip: Add avocado, sour cream and Jalapeño for a fully loaded Bomber. I came to Kono's for lunch and it was awesome! I don't usually write reviews for a sandwich but this one deserves a standing ovation!! I ordered the turkey avocado and was blown away by the freshness. You can tell they use high quality bread, the crust was wonderfully crisp while the inside stayed soft and airy. The avocado was perfectly ripe, and they paired it with such a generous portion of turkey!! It's rare to find a place that treats a simple classic with so much respect! Another place in Kailua that I really enjoyed! Kono's is on Merchant's row by the old bowling alley, and it has a cute pig motif for their decorations. My guess is that this is because they have numerous plates to choose from that feature Kalua pork--and these dishes are probably their flagship offerings). I could be wrong, and perhaps they just like pigs...either way, It's got a fun energy and vibe, and their logo (a pig on a surfboard) is one of the coolest I have ever seen. Love it! I am not sure if the strategy of asking food-service staff for their opinions on their favorites is a good game plan (as it is sometimes awkward to force someone to suggest something to a stranger when they have no idea of what you might like). But doing this has not failed me yet, as I have discovered some really memorable and enjoyable dishes in doing so. So anyway... I asked the guy who happened to be working the front counter what his favorite dishes were and he immediately, without hesitation, suggested the queen's breakfast burrito (*He also listed out a few other menu items, but as he described the other selections, I lost my focus on what he was saying and kinda knew that it was going to be that royal breakfast burrito for me.) All items on the menu are served all day, by they way. This sizable burrito is stuffed with chorizo, scrambled eggs, some bacon, a respectable amount of diced and fried potato cubes. It also has a mild cheddar cheese and all of these are wrapped in a fresh flour tortilla. It is partnered with a, "side-serving-size-of-salsa" (*woah, a little alliteration there--say that 3 times fast!) This is done so that you can add as much or as little as you want. (Oops, I just disrespected the intelligence of the reader, as that statement about why they serve salsa on the side is a bit obvious. Sorry). I was "starving" (*well, not really "starving", but you know what I mean)...so as soon as I sat down at one of the place's cute tables, I chomped into the burrito--feasting on its innards like a feral pig--not slowing down to add the salsa yet. I had been warned that the chorizo had a bit of a spicy zing--*but historically in Hawaii, warnings of things being, "a bit spicy, bradah" were met with food that probably would get a rank of 1 or 2 on the sconville heat scale (*about equal to a bell pepper with catchup on top). So when I bit in, I was surprised to find that it actually did truly have a bit of a "bite'. Yum. As an aside: My personal perception over the years is that locals in Hawaii seem to be sneaking up that sconville scale as to what they want in spiciness. I could be way off, but both family and friends who live here all the time (I'm a part timer) often were put-off by the heat of what I thought was really mild spices. *Just an observation. Back to the burrito....This Queens burrito was already revealing itself to be a really good and satisfying bit of chow. But once I slowed down and added a little salsa topping to each bite, the burrito went to another level. (cue sound of angels singing, or maybe I should describe it with the celebratory war chant that I've heard a few times made by locals on this trip...."Chee hoo!" Or is it, "Chaa hoo!"?). Regardless, that burrito was, "guh--ude!" Oh, shoot. Again, I have disrespected the intelligence of the reader, as it is obvious that adding a mixture of onions, chopped tomatoes, jalapeños, and cilantro to a dish is going to enhance flavors exponentially--and it did. With each bite my eyes kinda rolled back in my head in a face that might be described as, "orgasm-face like". Thankfully, as it was getting close to closing time, there were not too many diners left in the place--as that sounds almost creepy. But remember, I had not eaten since breakfast time and it was late afternoon. Each bite resulted in my brain firing off loads of serotonin and dopamine, and endorphins. I think this would still be happening if I had had midday meal, but my face would have been more chill. I originally gave the place a 4 star rating (but, only because I noticed that I almost always give 5's, and was concerned that my, "culinary street cred" would soon come into question. Astute readers who peruse reviews on yelp would soon discount anything I said. I was concerned that they would think, "Oh, this guy would probably give "dining with feral pigs at a knocked over trash can" 4.5 stars. But in fairness to Kono's, it falls into the category of a place that I will bring visiting friends and relatives when they come to Kailua--and it more than fits the needs of what one would hope for when looking for a quick bite in an adorable little town....so the 5 is well-deserved. This, incidentally, was not my first visit and I have tried a few other samplings from the menu. I liked them all. read more
