Since I heard the rumor from Lentil vine (wait... do lentils grow on vines?) that another Himalayan Nepali is opening near my stomping ground, I made it my mission to seek it out and stalk the "GRAND OPENING" sign. Friends of ours recommended Himalayan Range to us knowing that we love all types of different ethnic foods. We were in Cary for a baseball tournament and decided to try it. We LOVED every single dish we ordered, which was quite a few - every dish we had was bursting with flavor. We've been back several more times since even though it's a bit of a drive from our home in Wake Forest. Our favorite dishes are the goat curry, coconut chicken and chicken momos. My kids also love the garlic naan. Be warned though, their spicy is really really spicy! The first time we went, we ordered everything medium spiciness and it was a bit to hot for us even though we generally like spicy food. We've asked for mild ever since and it's just perfect. Himalayan Nepali was our favourite little place in Cary, until the original owners left. We were really sad for a long time, so you can probably guess our excitement when we heard that the original owners were opening Himalayan Range. We eagerly dropped by this past weekend, and are happy to report that the food is just as amazing as it used to be in the original Himalayan Nepali! The chicken 65 and gobi manchurian are two of our favorite appetizers. The chicken 65 here is spiced very uniquely here (quite different from South Indian chicken 65), but the flavour gets all the way through the chicken and it is always so crisp! This time we tried the Nepali chicken and yellow dhal for entrees, and both were superb. The nepali chicken tasted almost like a home-made curry and the bone-in meat was very tender. The dhal here was very interesting-- it was more coarse than a traditional pureed South Indian dhal, but the flavour was amazing! We also tried the gobi paratha (flatbread stuffed with cauliflower)-- it came out piping hot straight from the oven and was delicious. We always end our meal here with two desserts- Gulab jamun and Kheer. We really love the gulab jamun here because it is home-made, and not simply nuked in the microwave from a can like at some other establishments. Finally, it is really mindblowing that they serve all of this delicious food at such low prices! Great service too. My boyfriend and I absolutely love this place. It is our go to restaraunt and we have never been disappointed. When we visit we get almost one of everything. The onion chutney is absolutely amazing and something that I often dream about. The meat and vegetable samosas are HUGE and full of flavor. The chili chicken and chicken 65 are both great additions to our entree's of butter chicken and chicken tikka masala. Lastly, the cucumber water is the perfect touch to cooling down my taste buds. It certainly seems to be given the reviews but I couldn't take more than a few minutes in the restaurant due to the overwhelming smell of incense from the front counter. It was so overpowering throughout the whole room that any food would have been drowned out. Shame since I was really in the mood for some good curry and I had to leave before ordering. Great place! The food was delicious and we loved their gobhi paratha. It came to our table hot, flaky, buttery and crispy. Ticked all the boxes for a perfect paratha. Their vegetarian dishes were quite good. We tried the veg chow chow and loved it. It reminded us of the comforting taste of Maggie noodles. The vegetable chow mein was ok..nothing great about it. Himalayan Range is missing somewhat in ambiance, other than that I can certainly understand why people give it five stars ( for me it is a very strong four star). The dining room is very nice, completely covered in red color and the tables and booths look very new with no marks or scratches. To make the interior look complete with the overall look of the restaurant I would say cieling and floor could use an upgrade as those parts reminds a bit of an office. (Which Im assuming it was before it was converted, flourescent lights in some areas, etc). But overall a very inviting, pleasant and warm dining area. I think service was friendly and meaning well. The staff are all very smiley and keep check on your table and refilling the water (cucumber infused, nice little touch). Irrelevant sidenote: the young server had a bit of a funny, very Americanized pronounciation of all dishes. Staff seemed to be very accommodating, a large group of more than ten people walked in after 9pm (they close at 10pm) and they were seated and served promptly. Here is the thing though, this is yet another example of a restaurant that is not playing any music in the background,there is a tv with local news on mute...I really don't understand owners who prefer a silent dining room as opposed to some subtle tunes playing in the background, something instrumental or something native Nepali, Im not talking upbeat pop music being blasted...a simple thing like that makes it so much more inviting and makes you want to stay longer...without that it feels more half empty rather than half full....too much dining philosophy? Let's move on to the food, shall we. The menu has so many options that it is hard to decide. For anyone who has never had Nepali food and wondering what it is all about, it is pretty much just like Indian food, apart from a few different spices and style of cooking, and a couple of dishes that you will not find on the Indian restaurant menus. Himalayan Range is one of the few places where I can say that every dish is pretty much affordable. Every single thing on the menu is cheaper here than elsewhere, please don't change that!!! Some appetizers are just three bucks! And they dont compromise with taste or portion size. My chili paneer was delicious and for the price of four dollars the best deal in the triangle. Aloo tikki were big pieces and very tasty. I had the veggie momos, 12 for 9 dollars, but actually they are better over at the other Nepali restaurant in Chatham square. The complimentary papadam tasted fresh, among the better ones in the area, served with a nice tomato/onion paste. The mixed tandoor grill was such a good deal, a sizzling plate full of different types of chicken, ground chicken and shrimps, never thought you could get such good quality of meat for under 10 usd, and they give you rice with that too. The chicken was so juicy, it is a skill to cook chicken like that on the grill, keeping it succulent and not drying out (Wild Cook Indian grill on Hillsborough st is an example of how you should NOT use the grill). The ground chicken had lots of flavor and tasted like home style cooked chicken kebab pieces, I could see the fresh herbs added in there. They even did the rice well by adding cumin to it, which you don't see a lot done around here. I don't usually drink coffee outside of home, but as the rain was absolutely pouring down, we decided to stay a while longer until the rain had stopped and have coffee and dessert. I was not sure what Himalayan coffee was, but it was better than just regular coffee, sweet and I'm guessing condensed milk? The kheer was a large portion for just three dollars. As mentioned, everything is so affordable, from appetizers to drinks, to bread, main course and dessert. I would love to go back soon and sample more of everything! DELICIOUS!!! This will be our new go-to spot when we want Himalayan or even Indian. You must start with the momo, as they are to die for. Everything else was delicious, and the best part is if you want a dish that is actually mild, they will give you mild. Some Indian places can't produce mild and always bring the heat, which is disappointing. The portions are all good sized, and we have leftovers for the next day or two. Dumplings of any sort always make my day better, and I was expecting a life-changing experience upon tasting the momos most who visit this place rave about. They were good; don't get me wrong. But they were not great. They were a bit too dense and seemed also a bit overcooked. The lamb curry, however, was amazing, despite its appearance preventing my usual attempt to create an insta-worthy moment. The spices along with the mango created a wonderful mix of flavors that created a dance party for my taste buds when combined with the perfectly tender lamb. The parotha bread was straight up addicting, and l will order more than one next time instead of momos. The cauliflower was good, but it could have been a bit more crispy. The texture of the shrimp pakoras was more impressive. I'd return, but I would first visit the other Nepalese places in Cary. read more

We are SOOOOO glad we found this place!! Our usual Indian food spot had the oddest hours and they were constantly changing so it made satisfying a curry craving really difficult. Luckily, this restaurant has some amazing dishes and is open regular hours - huzzah! We love the momos here (my husband may or may not eat the all on the drive home when we get take out), and the goat curry is wonderful. There are many nuanced flavors and the meat is cooked so it's almost falling off the bones. They adjust spice level here to preference, so you can get your food very mild or rather spicy -- all good and flavorful at each level. We've tried a few other dishes here, but nothing has been better than the goat curry (well, and the momos of course). The naan has been just okay, nothing to write home about, but still serves its purpose for soaking up all that yummy curry! The service here has always been professional and friendly. I visited the place they owned in prior to this one multiple times and was highly disappointed when the owners had changed. I am glad now that they have reopened in a new location under the same management and of course the same lady cooking in the back. The food I can say is the best I have had in the area, something that comes very close to home cooked food. We ordered chicken tikka masala, malai kofta, chicken vindaloo, chicken in coconut curry and goat in coconut curry. Each dish was perfect, we thought they would use the same coconut curry both in goat dishes and chicken but the flavor profile was slightly different in the goat curry. The spices were a bit prominent given goat is a strong meat and can handle extra seasoning. You could taste just the right amount of cardamom, cloves and cinnamon with the creaminess of the coconut. We enjoyed the addition of shredded coconut in the curry, the spice level medium had a good kick as it went down. Malai Kofta surprisingly was creamy, with a hint of sweetness and the kofta's were soft with a bite to it. Chicken all of them had the right flavor to justify the dish. I am glad they are open again and this is one of the ones in the list that I will visit multiple times. The service is good and the water is refreshingly flavored with cucumber. Best value Indian restaurant in the area. If I lived in Cary I would be here multiple times per week! You really can't beat the prices and quality of the food. Chana masala (with a side of rice) for under $10, is hard to find. We drive 30min from Chapel Hill because the food is so great. Don't get me wrong, Chapel Hill and Raleigh have great Indian but the prices are often 2x more. If you're looking for casual Indian, or you just want to try Indian for your first time without spending a ton, this is the place to go. Ambiance is super simple/casual and the waitstaff is friendly. One employee doesn't speak English very well, so if you get him and have additional questions about the food just ask someone else. You can tell that they all want you to have a good experience and they take pride in their food. Lastly, their "hot" isn't very hot by Indian standards. So order accordingly. read more

Second, the flavors are amazing. I have tried multiple dishes and enjoyed all of it. Some of the stand out dishes I love from here are: the fish curry, the gobi parathas, the naan and the chicken momos. I'm not a big fan of tandoori, but my parter felt their tandoori sampler (I think that's what it's called?) was delicious with huge portions. Takeout experience was horrible last night after a great experience diningin on Dec 6. On Dec6, went with a large group of 15/16 of my friends. Every single order was so yummy, tasty, flavourful n fresh. Especially chowmein n momo. Based on that i ordered take out last night after telling them how much i liked their food hence returning. However came home with total disappointment with soggy soft noodles, barely any vegetables or meat/ egg in it. My sob commented its not restaurant quality, more like home cooked meal with too much spice. Btw my son is a food enthusiastic n connoisseur who himself cooks and follows different chef's channels. Momos are bland. Its just boiled meat inside with out any taste. Very disappointed. Not returning again. Btw same afternoon i ate noodles at Noodles Factory! It was so delicious. This is my 4th or 5th time dining with Himalayan Range so I'm confident I have a good handle on their capabilities. This location is hidden away in a shopping center a good distance from the main road. That makes it difficult to see but it's easy to get into the center at the main traffic light. HRN has an extensive menu which is hard to beat even in our restaurant dense Cary/Apex/Raleigh area. Indian is one of my top 3 foods, so I've sampled many Indian places in this area and they remain in the top 2! We've had the following dishes from HRN: Chicken Korma, Vegetable Somosa, Naan, Chicken Chana, Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Coconut Curry, Mango Lassi, plus more. Each time we find their spices and flavoring are dead on! The dishes are delicate and not overwhelming. The food is prepared fresh to order and the chief is amazing. The heat levels can vary from mild to make-your-eyelids-sweat if you dare - just ask! Service has always been first rate and when we do take out, it's just as awesome! So far, my favorite dish to date is the gobi manchurian, literally one of my new favorite things ever. I love that they have a wide variety of options for both meat and vegetarian. I may not be vegetarian but I really appreciate having a choice depending on what I am craving. They are priced very reasonably and their delivery is fast. Ordered the buttered chicken and chicken momo's. Chicken was very tender, sauce had good flavor, but was very thin/runny. We had left overs and the sauce had thickened up in the refrigerator, but again became really thin. I think this is probably due to the high amounts of butter in this, but was still pretty thin from other versions I've frequented. The rice was very fragrant, adding in spices and almost a nutty flavor to it, you can tell they don't just steam plain white rice. Overall, I would still return. read more

This is an awesome get away for lunch time if you can get the time to come here it is so worth it. I was in a rush, so I ordered To Go and I always believe that Packed food will never taste as good as they prepare. Service was very quick and my food was ready within 15 minutes for pick up and staff was very courteous. Veggie Momos and Gobi Manchurian was a delight to have. I'm sure they will taste even better if dined in. Paranthas on the other hand were not well made. I ordered stuffed paranthas and the stuffing was lacking so much that I felt like I'm eating plain paranthas for the most part. A little stuffing here and there tasted good though. It's just that if I had dined in, it would have been little better coz plain paranthas are good only when eaten fresh so maybe I'll give it a shot next time. Mango Lassi was way to sweet and I could taste sugar which isn't good. I can understand if it's sweet because of more mango pulp but you know it isn't good if you can taste sugar. read more

I also got the Chicken Pakora since it looked so good on the menu, thinking the (5) was how many pieces I would be getting, but may have ended up with the chili chicken or the number meant that it was for that many people to share. Either way, I ended up with too much food and the chicken apetizer I had (whatever it was) was fine, but not the highlight of the meal. I am assuming this is more of an issue with culture, but the glass was not nice and frosty. Having eaten a few times at Indian restaurants, I had my coworker ask for water with no ice and seen other patrons do as well. I was checked on once during my meal and no one bothered to offer another beer; when mine was clearly empty. Food: The selection is vast. I ordered both the veggie and meat samosas. They veggie was ok, the meat one was very dry. My entrée was ok, nothing special. Portions are large and the prices are crazy cheap. Overall: Service could use some work. Food ok.
