My wife and I ate dinner here for her birthday on a Thursday evening, and had a very enjoyable dinner. The service and ambience were 5 stars all the way, & the food was very good, but warranted the 4 stars rating. Read on for details. In a town full of local, independent restaurants, this spot fits right in. It feels very Himalayan, regional India in decor, from colorful wall decorations, to the music, to the beautifully covers chairs. Adding to the overall experience is the attached Tibetan/Himalayan gift shop. The smells from the kitchen were as inviting as the friendly wait staff. The restaurant was more than 1/2 full when we arrived at 6 pm, and packed when we left. Clearly a Big Bear favorite! My wife is vegan and cannot eat sugar, so dining out is typically tough, but Himalayan made every effort to provide a great meal. We started with samosas which were large, crispy, and packed with a super flavorful potato mixture. I ate mine with mint/cilantro chutney, not vegan, and their wonderful chili paste (salty, pungent, sour, and spicy...SO good). For our bread, we ordered Aaloo Paratha, paratha stuffed with potato, and Tandori Roti. Both breads were warm and delicious, thought the paratha was a bit doughy and may have been a little under done. We over-ordered entrees so we could leave with leftovers. We chose Aaloo Govi (potatoes and cauliflower in a fairly thin curry, Baigan Aaloo (eggplant with potatoes), okra (Bindhi Masala some places), and tofu curry. The eggplant and potato was a new dish for us and was my wife's favorite of the night. Cooked with tomato and spices it was outstanding. My top dish was the okra, cooked with onion, tomato, and spices it had amazing flavor, was not slimy at all, and the texture was the perfect al dente (with just a little bite or crunch). The potato and cauliflower was tasty, but in all my years of eating this dish have never had it made with so much sauce, almost like a curry. That said, it was very flavorful. We ordered the tofu curry as an afterthought and it was not to the standard of the other dishes. The curry was thin and over salted, and the tofu was prepared in a way that we didn't enjoy so much. Commentary on heat and chutneys: The food was not spicy at all. While the chili paste was outstanding, the dishes themselves had no heat at all and I wonder if this is a local accommodation, or if Himalayan food just isn't spicy like Indian food is. I don't typically eat the tamarind chutney because it is too sweet for me, and this was the case here as well. The mango chutney was flavorful, but the sweetness overpowered the chutney for me. It was disappointing that their mint/cilantro chutney was not vegan due to the addition of yogurt. While we order vegan out, I do not vegan exclusively. I've been eating Indian and the regional cuisine for over 30 years and have only recently seen dairy appear in the essential mint/cilantro chutney. It was disappointing because the chutney does not need dairy, and in my experience the bright herbaciousness of this chutney is watered down with dairy...and also makes it inedible for vegans. I've not eaten in a Himalayan restaurant before, only north and South Indian, and Afghani restaurants, so maybe my comments here are reflect typical Himalayan cuisine. Overall, we enjoyed our meal and will return the next time we're in town. I recommend this spot for anyone who likes this type of food...you won't be disappointed. read more

I have been coming here for many years and the food is always excellent. I do always get the same thing tho so... mixed grill, naan & fried rice. Sometimes I get pakuda as well and those are great so is the chicken soup when I'm sick and the lamb rack for special occasions. I did notice on my most recent visit that they didn't provide any of the dipping sauces that always came with my food before so that was very disappointing! Also the service is not great maybe it's a language barrier. My beer was also disappointing I think it should've been much colder & that would help. The ambiance is good when it's not crazy busy but when it is be prepared for chaos. Prices have also gone up quite a lot which sucks but I think they still have lunch specials that are better priced. I went here with my boyfriend this last Saturday on a day trip to Big Bear. The service prompt though maybe a little curt. We ordered the Lamb Masala, rice (which add to be ordered separately as it didn't come with the dish), garlic naan (also extra) and the chutneys. The flavors were delicious. The masala sauce had wonderful flavor, albeit the lamb was the tiniest bit overcooked, but most people probably wouldn't notice. The garlic naan with the tamarind, mango and mint chutneys was amazing...I hadn't had the three of those with naan in a long time and it literally made the meal so comforting to me. I feel the portions were good for the amount you pay. However, I do feel either the naan or rice should be included in the entree itself. It appears their popular ones do, but not the specific categorical meat options. It was a cozy environment and felt very similar to the Indian restaurants I've been to on Pioneer in Cerritos, where I usually enjoy my Indian food. The reasons I gave 4 stars instead of 5 are as followed: the service was slightly terse, the lamb could have been cooked the slightest bit less, and the separate charges for each accoutrement seemed excessive. We stopped in here for dinner and there was a 30 minute wait so we waited at the bar. The restaurant was super busy and the staff was running around working very hard. It didn't look very organized. As they took us to our table and someone else sat other people there. Once we got seated, I noticed it happened a couple of times. The restaurant was decent size. There were 3 sections and a small store attached. We ordered an appetizer (Mo-Mo Veg), green salad, lentil soup, naan, chicken tikka masala, and chicken chili. We got our salad first but the soup and Mo-Mo never showed up. Once our dinner showed up we thought maybe it would still come out. It didn't and they never really checked on us. We really didn't need the extra food, we just wanted to try it. It was on our bill and when we let her know, she took it off but never apologized or anything. Now for the good part, the food.... It was so yummy! My husband's chicken chili had a great taste and the chicken was tender. My chicken tikka masala was amazing! The creamy sauce was so delicious and the chicken melted in my mouth. This spot is located in Big Bear Village with an air of history around it. The store is separated into segments with a store and the restaurant proper being split by a wall. The place feels bright and clean, if a bit dated. The service was polite but suffers from speed and quality issues. It's likely that the waiters forgot our beverages until we reminded them. The food is outstanding. The chicken momos have a delightful rush of himalayan spices which pairs well with the fruity chutney. The butter chicken was extremely rich, creamy, and buttery, the lamb Tikka creamy and savory (with a slight gamey taste to the lamb, and the chicken vindaloo slightly acidic with a spicy punch (adjustable). The food was definitely worth the wait, but the wait was real long despite not a packed restaurant. In that sense, I cannot in good conscious give this a full 5 stars, but definitely worth eating at. read more

It's the busy season in Big Bear, so we were expecting a bit of a wait, but we came before the dinner rush and were able to have our party of six seated right away. The place is cozy, but not heated. So if you sit near the doors, it is freezing! Also, their bathrooms could use more monitoring and tending to, it was very messy. The service was great, everyone was friendly, but they were rushed. You can smell the food from the outside. It was all very flavorful. My kids can be somewhat picky, but they were starving after sledding and loved the food. The food was really tasty. It took a while to come out and the portions were smaller than I expected, but I was stuffed afterwards. This is in the village, so expecting some parking hassle. It has been 3+ years since my original review, as well as having returned to Big Bear. I prefaced my original with "I am NOT a fan of Asian Indian food" but went on to give it the 5 star review, as well as mention we returned a second time before leaving the mountain. Well, the wife and I did it again! We went to dinner and returned for lunch - that's how good we believe the food here to be! Both visits we were greeted promptly and served very well. The interior is decorated quite nice and seems authentic to the region (not that I have been there). These two visits included me having the 'Lamb Roll' (Boneless lamb cooked with fresh herbs and spices, stuffed in homemade egg-washed bread. Served with chutney) for dinner and the 'Chicken Chili' (Boneless chicken pieces sauteed with green pepper, bell pepper, onions, tomatoes, and a homemade sauce) for lunch. Both were DELICIOUS and the portions larger than expected! Whatever these seasonings are that they use they do it right! I asked for the spice heat in my chili to be a 6 to 7 and they were spot on. My wife had 'Butter Chicken' (Tandoori-baked chicken dark meat cooked with tomatoes in a lean cream sauce) for dinner and Palak Paneer (Fresh spinach leaves and paneer cubes (homemade Himalayan cheese) sauteed with onions, ginger, garlic, and homemade spices) for lunch. For appetizers of course the chicken mo-mos (Steamed dumplings stuffed with ground chicken, served with chutney) and a variety of naan (onion, garlic and plain) were on the must have list and obtained each day. We also tried their Samosas (Vegetarian turnovers stuffed with potatoes, peas, spices, herbs, and served with tamarind chutney) and Cheese Pakauda (Deep fried cheese battered with chickpea flour, seasoned with spices, and served with chutney). Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, tasted great! Even the iced tea they serve tasted great. Whatever mild spices they use in the iced tea put Lipton's to shame. I sure hope we get one more shot at eating here before our time comes to an end! I am going to toss some photos on this review (there are also photos from our original visit here). My husband and I enjoyed the lovely authentic food from this restaurant. We decided to spend the day in Big Bear and am really glad we tried them out after the hike we had. It was so filling and delicious! I got the Lamb Makhni with rice while my husband got the rack of lamb. We also got garlic naan and cheese naan. Himalayan Restaurant was the first place we headed to upon arriving in Big Bear, and I was surprised that there was Nepali/Tibetan food here...and decently so! We ordered chicken and vegetable momos to start; to be honest, I've had better momos before, as I found these to be small, easily breakable, and overall not as flavorful as they could've been. The palak paneer and lamb curry came as the main dishes: the palak paneer was wonderfully flavored, with smooth spinach and delicious, curd-like paneer. The lamb curry was just-okay, as I found the meat to be tough and the curry a bit on the bland side. The basmati rice was way too dry, but it worked as the perfect vessel for the palak paneer and lamb curry. Highlight of the meal, however, was the garlic naan: warm, fluffy AND toasty, and aromatic, it was so good that we ordered seconds! Definitely get the garlic naan at Himalayan Restaurant (or any of the naan, for that matter). Overall, decent-ish Nepali/Tibetan food for being in the Big Bear mountains. Hits were definitely the palak panner and naan. Service was a bit slower given we went at peak lunch hour, but nice enough service anyway. Himalayan Restaurant is one of the handful of restaurants which stand out in Big Bear, and it's worth a pop in to try Nepali/Tibetan cuisine! read more

We went out to eat over the Thanksgiving long weekend, and the experience was extremely disappointing. First, we waited quite a while for someone to even take our order. When the server finally came, he told us they couldn't take more than one order at a time because the chef "forgets," which was already concerning. Then the roti arrived cold. When we asked for it to be warmed up, the server responded with a rude attitude, saying, "Oh, because it's hot?" When the rest of the food came out, it was honestly the worst meal I've ever had. We asked them to replace it, but the second attempt was just as bad. There were six or seven servers around, yet none of them took responsibility--everyone kept pointing at someone else instead of helping. Overall, very poor customer service and very bad food. Conveniently located on one of the main streets in town, this restaurant (and the watering hold next door) was just what we were looking for. From our window seat, we were able to people watch while waiting for our meal. The masala and curry we ordered were delicious and items were reasonably priced. First off I wanna say our waiter, Ruben, was friendly and attentive. He made sure we were taken care of, especially since it was our first time there. The portions are big, and the food came out hot and fast. We started with the Chicken Mo Mo appetizer and they were so good. Soft, juicy dumplings with a dipping sauce that was perfect and comes with a slice of a carrot and cucumber. (They have a vegan mo mo as well) The Garlic Chicken Sekuwa comes out sizzling on a hot plate so be careful. The chicken was tender, served with grilled veggies. It's also one of the only meals that comes with garlic naan, otherwise you have to order it separately. Also make sure you order a one side of rice, it's a big enough portion to be shared for all meals ordered, at least it was for us. We also tried the Butter Chicken, which was creamy, rich, and full of flavor. Pro tip: the garlic naan + butter chicken cream = godlike combo. Not pictured: Mango Lassi. Was visiting here with family at Big bear. Went here based on 3.8 reviews in the yelp. Ordered chilli chicken, chicken vindaloo, saag chicken, fried rice, and naan. The only dish I liked was veg fried rice bacuse of more vegetables not just carrots and peas. I have no idea how they make the chilli chicken which was not exactly chilli chicken, just because you add capsicum doesn't mean chilli chicken dish. Chicken vindaloo was not at all good, it was not tasty. Saag chicken was ok, but not upto satisfying. Really dont recommend this Indian Cusine. This place was excellent! If I was to be nit picky I would say that the samosas were sub par as an appetizer and to go for the momos instead. Service was quick, and they filled out water cups multiple times without asking. The food also came out pretty quick for a sit down and was nice and fresh. One of the most disappointing dining experiences I've had in a long time. We waited over 40 minutes for very simple dishes, and nothing came out. When we finally asked, the food suddenly appeared within minutes -- clearly sitting for a long time. The lamb curry was barely warm. We were told the chicken was unavailable, yet a later table received it. Even the replacement dish arrived without the sauce.
