I feel like eating vegetarian today, so I got a vegetarian tantanmen at Himawari San Mateo! And let me tell you, I was SHOCKED!! Like a goosebump because of how delicious the broth is (Warning: If you can't handle spicy, ignore this review, but if you like spicy, go on). The spicy broth was just 10/10, it's probably the best out of the 5 places I've tried in Bay. They still make it rich (typical ramen style), but different type of rich than the broth made from butter miso, probably a lighter broth (which I really enjoy). My bowl also had avocado, bean sprouts and cilantro, which is kinda surpring but real good combination in the end. The restaurant also very aesthetic, has that retro vibe with a lot of posters, jazz music turned on, and superrrr cozy vibe! This is definitely a place I would go back to try their meat version, because it's so good!!!!!!!!

We have been coming here for years. Their chicken karaage and tan tan men are our favorite. We tried many ramen places and we still considered those two dishes are the best we had.

Himawari I feel is an underrated ramen spot that has been consistent over the years. It's a such a cool spot with their walls neatly lined with vinyl while playing jazzy tunes. I come here a few times a year and will continue. Lots of seats and friendly/fast service! Himawari roll - 4/5 - crunchy with fresh ingredients. Flavor was standard but felt like it was missing a creamier type sauce (spicy mayo?). Deluxe Shio Ramen - 5/5 - Really good quality ramen from the salty broth (surprisingly didn't feel overly salty), soft tender char siu, and even more tender and flavorful kakuni.

Mediocre. Overpriced, small portion, surprisingly quite busy on a Tuesday night. It's a ramen place but the walls are filled with Jazz records and posters lol. All the ramen options have pretty much the same toppings, and there's not much to really praise.

Really good ramen on a chill day in San Mateo! The service was really quick, and I liked the portion side - it wasn't too much and wasn't too less either! Good dinner :) would recommend!

I've been here a number of times over the years. It's been a minute some popped in for dinner. I always get Tan Tan Men. Hands down so good with a little spice. Service was good and they were fast. I'll definitely go back!

Came here for lunch. It was okay and was seated promptly. Food was average for ramen. Would probably just come for the experience and call it a day. The ambiance has jazz music playing in the background.

Sesame spinach. Good but not the traditional flavor

This place reminded me a lot of a ramen shop near my grandparents' home in Tokyo. Unfortunately while the flavors were nostalgic, I can't say that's necessarily a good thing. Ramen has gotten so good, so elevated that an average ramen just doesn't cut it anymore. I got the deluxe shio ramen. You can tell a lot about a ramen broth when you try a shio ramen because you can't hide it with thick pork broth of a tonkatsu broth. Sadly, there wasn't a ton of umami and it could have used a little more salt. The pork was pretty good and added some flavor but their thinly sliced chashu lacked flavor too. All in all, disappointing but it did give me some nostalgia for when I was a kid so that's something. I ordered the spinach which is usually supposed to have a stronger sesame flavor but this was a little sour. I kind of liked it but it wasn't what you would expect from a Japanese spinach dish. I also got the spicy tuna roll. Not at all spicy but it was fine. And that's probably the best way to describe this spot. Fine. Not somewhere I would seek out but it's servicable.

Maybe it's because I'm not local, but ramen is getting quite expensive nowadays. Himawari is small and cozy, with light jazz music filtering through. The workers move fast. It has a relatively small but diverse menu, mostly offering classic ramen options, with some twists. I opted for the Shoyu Taro-men, which was the stewed pork belly ramen. Instead of the classic chashu, it came with stewed pork belly. The cuts were thick and the extra fat from the pork belly polluted the soup. The shoyu was tasty but not anything particularly amazing. The noodles were thin and chewy, with a good texture. At some point, the stewed pork belly started tasting strange, like almost sanitary, so I had to give up on it. The portion size is quite large. For almost $20, it also didn't come with a ramen egg, which was a little disappointing but unfortunately expected. From what it looks like from reviews, I should have opted for the butter miso corn ramen. Overall, not anything I would go out of my way for nor recommend to visitors but I can see why this has held its ground against the ramen battlefield of the Bay Area.

This is our family's all time favorite ramen place. They are the only ones who have the best food ever! Besides the ramen, we also always order their chicken karaage, agedashi tofu, and buta kakuni. They also have the best service. The ambiance is nice and they play jazz in the background.

Chicken Karaage: 5/5 - so tender, juicy perfection! The dark meat... Miso Butter Corn Ramen , added spicy and egg : 4/5 - Thought the broth would be more buttery and creamy but it was more bamboo flavored base . Not a huge fan but still good . - meat : tender and juicy - ramen noodles: al dente and good texture - eggy: perfect! Soft boiled and nicely flavored . This is additional pay add-on . Service: outgoing staff and fast service Service dog friendly

It had been a while since we last visited Himawari, so it was nice to come and get their ramen again. It was crowded today on MLK holiday. Smallish restaurant. They could probably put several tables together to accommodate a large party of 6-8. But in general, a typical ramen place geared for 4 or less. Simple design and decor. One restroom for the entire restaurant. Metered street parking mostly. Tonkotsu DX: cha-shu, stewed pork belly, egg, kikurage mushrooms, beansprouts, red ginger, green onions, & nori (3.5/5). The broth was smooth & flavorful. The stewed pork belly was very tender, soft, and well seasoned. It was very good! The noodles were thin yet chewy. Cha-shu Ramen: Choice of ramen broth shoyu/shio/miso. Extra slices of cha-shu w/regular toppings (3.5/5). My wife went with the Shio. She really liked her broth - more than she liked my tonkotsu broth. The service was good, nice, & attentive. The friends we came with liked their ramen. One ordered the miso broth and one ordered the tonkotsu.

I have a gluten allergy, but noticed you offer gluten-free noodles. Is it safe to assume that your ramens are also safe or is it just the noodles?

I have celiacs and haven't had any issues yet, I would stick to the pork broth or any non soy sauce based just to be safe

Is outdoor dining still available for dinner?

No outdoor dining observed, as of 9/4/22

Are they still offering outdoor dining this month Dec 2020?

Yes, HIMAWARI is open for outdoor dining as of now. If the county issues stricter measures we need to comply. Thank you all for your support!

    Is there dine-in yet?

Hi Jessica, thank you for your inquiry. We are still operating as take-out only and observing the situation. We will certainly notify on Yelp once we know when we will be open for dine-in. Stay tuned and have a great day!!

Hello Thuc, thanks for thinking about us! Yes, we are open for takeout only - 11:15am- 2pm, 5:15pm-9pm, 7 days. Hope to see you soon!!

Some personal thoughts: If you want something light, or try to order for the elders, wagyu aburasoba is a better choice, since the meat is more lean and yogurt sauce help balance the richness. Homura aburasoba is also great, but minced pork is a bit fatty, and traditional sauce is also rich, so I normally find it hard to finish a bowl because I'm too full. Nevertheless, I don't say it's not great, do not order. My order was Soboro Aburasoba noodles with green onions and ground chicken. I substituted the raw for a poached egg. First off, these noodles have no soup. You mix up the egg with the melange of ingredients resulting in a pasta sauce of sorts. My dish was sweet since the ground chicken seems to have been cooked in a teriyaki-type sauce. After a few bites, I added in some sesame seeds and garlic seasoning. After a little more time, I added in some vinegar - this helped balance the flavor more. For me, this dish was disappointing. The noodles were okay. But after half a bowl, the dish was really boring. It's like eating a big bowl of pasta Bolognese. A few bites if the same flavor and I wanted to have something else. The service was so-so. I was not offered the free tea (unlike my neighbors who were both males). I had to ask for it. At the end, I had to flag a server for my bill. The food here at Kajiken is not inexpensive. The line must be due to the dishes being different from traditional ramen with soup. But for me, I will likely stay on the savory ramen-with-soup-fan side rather be a sweet-dry-noodle fan side.

We've been to Hanabi many times, when they were a fledging ramen place we'd go there because…read moregrowing son (now in mid 20s) just loved the slurp and after baseball was the perfect meal. Fast forward, it's Mom's Day, kids having meals on their own as parents, our celebration is to go somewhere good to have a meal, no lines (didn't make a res), kinda spontaneous. Hanabi fits the bill. Ordered the pork belly ramen ( looked really good at a neighboring table) and the Mayu-ramen, spicy, with kfc chicken (not what you think, means something else), both with a miso base. Wait was reasonable, time to get a table was 30 seconds tops. Other nights it's been jammed but not Mom's Day, just quiet, enjoyable. Both meals were spectacularly reasonable, serving what you'd want, with enough of everything to want to dive in because you were pretty assured you were going to be satisfied. Not fru-fru or bougie, ingredients that make the dish memorable yet feel you are knowledgeable and appreciated. Pork belly was soft, fatty yet lean, cooked well enough to be tender, yet with a little chew (not disintegrating like some bellies), lots of noodles al dente so you appreciate the noodle was not a mushy mass in the bowl like some places. The Mayu came with 3 drumsticks burning hot from the fryer but oh so good because it's served in a separate dish so it doesn't get soggy. The spicy is good enough to keep things interesting with losing its identity (unlike a lot of places). And they give plenty of ramen because it's that good. We keep coming back because they serve no-frills, you-can-bank-on-it ramen that is satisfying, consistent; staff is friendly without being overbearing. It's not a big place, tables and a counter, but they know how to keep diners happy and coming back for more. What more can you ask for? Thanks, Hanabi, will definitely be back!
