Well done Himawari, well done. While visiting home, my brother insist that I absolutely had to try out the Ramen selection in San Mateo. Since Ramen Dojo sold out around 1:30pm, we decided to try Himawari instead. FIrst off, the menu was a bit overwhelming. There is a huge selection of different types of ramen and the huge variety of add ons makes the ramen really customizable. -I ended up getting the Deluxe Miso Ramen with added corn. -The deluxe ramen came with chunks of stewed pork belly on top of the regular thin slices of roast pork. -the stewed pork belly was so rich and soooo fatty, but it was so delicious and tender. -The semi hard boiled egg was great. You can tell that they precook the egg to the perfect consistency and reheat it with the broth. Even though it was reheated, the yolk was still slightly runny. -The broth is on the richer side. Very flavorful from the fat of the pork bones. However, it was not too overwhelming and not too oily. -To me the noodles were the perfect consistency. Slightly bouncy to the bite and not too soft. We also decided to share a Buta Kakuni, which essentially is the same thing as the stewed pork belly in your ramen but FRIED and served with a citrus, slightly vinegar base sauce. Although very heavy, the vinegar pickled veggies definitely help cut the fat. I would say, to definitely order this as an appetizer and would not recommend this as an entree. Even though the melt in your mouth goodness is great the first few bites, after a while, it's just too heavy. I would suggest that if you decide to get the deluxe ramen with the stewed pork, either get that or order the buta kakuni. Having both is just too much meat at one time. Came here because Santa Ramen was closed. What a great find! This place is as good as Goma Tei at Ala Moana in Honolulu, HI. There is a cool and unusual vibe because jazz music is playing in the background. The Shiro Tan Tan Men Deluxe's broth was full of flavor. The pork was served three ways which was a nice surprise. My favorite ramen shop! We have been eating here since they opened years ago. They have the best and most consistent quality ingredients. I've eaten almost everything on the menu. The soy ramen is a good basic dish. I like the wakame ramen the best. The deluxe ramen will satisfy a huge appetite. I also like the tan tan ramen. The kaarage chicken is a terrific appetizer to share. They have the best - I love the light and crisp coating and the chicken is always juicy. The place is decorated with LP album covers of jazz artists and they play jazz music, which makes for a classy and relaxing atmosphere. There is often a line to get in for dinner but unless we are in a hurry, we wait because this is simply the best ramen restaurant around. Update: the pork in the soup is pretty lean but has become tough and harder to chew. Not sure what happened to the quality. I will always have memories of my good times in San Mateo especially when I found an awesome ramen spot in town! I remember it was a sunny yet brisk day in the bay area absolutely a perfect day for ramen. Its your typical cozy ramen house always seem to be packed with people because it's usually a small space. This place is one of the many great ramen places in downtown San Mateo, but stands out in ways that make it better. To start, the restaurant has a different vibe. It has old records hanging on the walls and a aged and vintage look that makes the place more homey, and not futuristic and too clean like others. The menu isn't too complicated and many of the items are extremely delicious, including their wide selection or ramen served with soup broth or dry. It's brought to your table hot, and at a good price so it's very affordable. And let me say, the waiters here are amazing. I recently visited and had my first dining experience at Himawari. I'll more than likely do a follow up once I've gone back and tried other dishes. But so far, the experience I had was quite pleasant. I had the Miso Ramen, which all in all, was quite tasty and prepared well. Especially the slices of pork, which was delicious. For me personally, the only thing that was slightly lacking, was the broth. I felt it was a tad too salty, but not unacceptably so. But again, other than that, it was fantastic! The entire establishment appeared to be quite clean, including the restrooms. I absolutely loved the decor, which I'm sure if you've been there, have seen photos or read other reviews, then you know all about the "Jazz theme".. i.e. the walls covered with classic Jazz album covers. As a musician, longtime Jazz fiend and just from a visual standpoint, that's something that I found really alluring and appreciated very much. And fortunately, the sounds filling the room for the entirety of the evening, were representative of the decor. Another HUGE plus for myself and I'm sure any other lover of this musical genre. All in all, the restaurant had a really comfy, cozy and chill vibe to it. Nuff said! The pricing was quite reasonable, the service and wait time were for the most part, great. The only thing that kind of rubbed me the wrong way (and makes this only 3 stars), was that one of the employees was more or less trying to get us to hurry up and leave once the bill was paid. He basically said they needed the table or that they needed to clean the table..?? I couldn't quite understand what he said. And though he stated this politely, again, his point was that he definitely wanted us to wrap it up. Now, this being pretty close to closing time, I can obviously understand them wanting to start clearing tables and cleaning up sooner than later, so they could get out of there and get home. Again, understood, however, we had finished eating long before he approached us about this, had already paid and left the tip, the table was already cleared and at that point, we were just simply chilling and continuing our conversations and what was left of our beverages. Now, it's one thing if they were just reminding us that they'd be closing soon and that if we wanted to order anything else, we'd have to do that now or if they were just letting us know the kitchen & bar were now officially closed, etc.. But again, that wasn't what was said and/or implied. Again, it was more of a 'nudge' if you will, just letting us know that they "need" the table. But again, seeing as it was 'that' time of night, they obviously aren't going to need the table for new customers and as far as cleaning up, again, there wasn't anything to clean up at that point. We were just occupying seats. As soon as he said that, we immediately obliged, walked out and continued our conversation right outside the place for a good 10-15 mins. For the entire duration of us being outside, I noticed there were still plenty of customers inside who like us, were just simply hanging out and chatting. I guess I just assumed I'd start seeing others leaving fairly quickly, like we did. Hmm.. interesting. Anyway, not really sure what that was all about. And again, he wasn't a jerk about it and clearly it's not the worst thing that one could experience, but still something I found slightly off putting. Our group of four waited about 20 minutes to get seated at this place on a Friday night. There was definitely a line and a full restaurant, but the staff there are organized and on top of it to accommodate as many people as possible. We sat down, ordered, and received our food without any issues. Actually, there was one issue. I ordered a deluxe ramen, my friend ordered a spicy deluxe ramen. They mixed our orders up and didn't realize it until my friend had already bit into his egg! I don't have an issue sharing food, but i could see how this could have been a bigger problem had one of us been sick or something. We switched bowls and eggs, i wasn't going to eat his half eaten egg. The broth was delicious (miso) and the cubes of stew pork was melt away in your mouth AMAZING. Definitely the highlight of the entire bowl. next time i'll add corn to my deluxe. My only gripe was that they serve sodas out of the can. Not a fan of sodas out of a can, plus no refills! Stopped in for dinner on a Sunday night at about 6:40PM. I chose this place over Ramen Dojo because it seems they only have spicy ramen and one of my dining partners does not like spicy food. Since this is in the prime downtown area of San Mateo, parking is definitely tricky and not exactly plentiful. The place was pretty packed and I was #5 on the wait list. The wait was not too bad, about 15 minutes, so that was definitely a plus. The restaurant is clean and comfy, and there is decent spacing between the tables so you don't feel crammed with everyone else. My party of 2 were seated but we were waiting for a third. It took about 5 minutes before someone brought us drinks... and another 10 before I was able to flag someone down to take my order. I understand they were busy and I would probably be more understanding had the food been better. Maybe because of the Yelp reviews I was hoping for something a little better. Items ordered: Deluxe ramen- miso broth- Noodles were ok, nothing special Wakanabe ramen- with the salt broth- this is the same as the regular but you get fresh seaweed added- Again, noodles had decent texture but nothing special. :( Stewed pork appetizer- Very good flavor, but a bit on the fatty side (then again, anytime you order stewed pork at these ramen places, they tend to be pretty fatty) Proscuitto wrapped scallops- I've had better. It's been years since I've seen some of my San Diego friends so it was nice that we could get a little group together in the Peninsula for some delicious ramen. There's many choices, but my buddy's favorite is Himawari. I've never been so I was totally game to check it out. They're famous for their tan tan ramen but I decided to double down and get the tan tan men deluxe which came with lots of delicious stewed fatty pork and wonderful broth. At $12.50, it was worth the extra few dollars for the pork but did push the meal above the $10 threshold. I'd get it again in a heartbeat though, I loved it that much! Not sure if I'd consider Himawari better than something like Ramen Parlor. They're both excellent and unique in their own way. Prices are on par with each other though Himawari has more premium options. Service was really good and our table was well attended. It's further away than Parlor and parking is much more difficult however so I'll probably be around that area less. However, definitely a worthy bowl of ramen here! However, while the pork belly was good, it was a little lackluster compared to the stewed pork (and to what I make at home), and the broth was a bit too salty. So much so, in fact, that I would not really recommend drinking it: not with the noodles, and certainly not without. Not sure how it started but it has been eluding me for the past few months since I was in Shanghai so I knew it was fate kicking me in the butt to try some. I get there around 11 AM and notice that the place does not open until 11:30. Fail on my part for not checking the times more carefully. I was with someone so we just chatted and we noticed that a line started forming around 11:10 or so. As soon as 11:30 comes, they open the doors and we walk into the restaurant and are seated immediately. The décor in the place is quite interesting. Who would expect jazz music and jazz records to be up on the wall for a ramen place?? But the music was soothing so no complaints. We peruse the menu and my companion orders the tan tan men while I decide to go with the shiro tan tan men deluxe. The ramen comes out relatively quickly and I take a spoon and take a sip on the broth. Delicious. The pork is super tender also and super moist throughout all the bites so it was awesome. The broth had a nice spice but was very smooth to taste. The tan tan men was equally good and I actually found I enjoyed it also because it was more spicy balancing out the shiro tan tan men deluxe. Bomb ass ramen. Came here with a couple of friends on a Sat night after doing the Neon run and we were starving. It had been super cold out that night as well and we were all in the mood for some nice hot noodle soup. This place did not disappoint. I got their Tan-tan men ramen because I wanted something spicy. When my dish came out, I was ecstatic to see that they are not selfish with the portion size. This meal totally hit the spot-none of us were speaking because we were all enjoying our food so much. My first experience ordering takeout was really good. The quality of the broth and noodles were noticeable. However, 2nd and 3rd times were not as good as the first. I'm a big fan of this place and frequent here often when I'm in town visiting family. Might even have to call it my favorite ramen spot in the Pennisula! My go to ramen is the butter corn ramen here! Also had the tan tan men which has cilantro as an added garnish which adds an extra omph to the bowl(beware non-cilantro lovers!). Keep in mind, they serve thin style ramen noodles(my favorite) rather the thicker chewy kind, and each bowl comes standard with sliced chashu, bamboo shoots, and green onion. Depending on which ramen you select there might be more topping add-ons. Don't fret if you want to add an extra egg or other various toppings if it's not listed for the ramen style you have chose, you're more than welcome to add whatever your heart, or stomach desires listed on the bottom of the ramen menu. The only thing I wasn't a fan of Himawari was the egg. Typically I save the egg for the end of my meal but to my surprise, though perfectly cooked, it's sweet. And it's a type of sweetness I'm not fond of but might be your thing! I've also have had the buta kimchi(pork stir-fried with kimchi) dish here which comes with a side of rice, salad, and bowl of soup. It wasn't too memorable for me other than me picking at the crunchy boys of kimchi but my SO really enjoyed it on top of his bowl of ramen. That day made it clear I just love this spot for ramen. The service is attentive and quick. The vibes are just right here with soulful jazz playing in the background and its array of quirky, cute decor to set the mood. I love the use of small but decorative sunflowers hiding everywhere in the storefront to showcase it's name Himawari which is "sunflower" in Japanese. Little things to note: they serve barley tea instead of water so if you're not a fan, ask. Also tables are pretty close to each other so don't be weird out if you can tune in to other's convos. I was drawn to himawari because it was open past 10:30. That was my first plus, ramen I feel like is a late night thing and it was nice that it was open past 9:00 when everything usually closes. Another plus for me is a place that not only sells ramen but sushi too! Ambiance: really cool vibe located in downtown San Mateo. Very relaxed and spacious not to small but I am sure there is a wait on weekends. Food: we started with the gyoza. I have had way better gyoza I do not recommend it. I had the spicy tuna roll which was not spicy what so ever but that did not bother me because I love tuna. We got the pork fried rice which had way to much pork in it but still delicious. I got the shiro ton katsu deluxe and was so happy with it/ my boyfriend got the tan tan..both spicy options. Both delicious we were so happy with it. I like their broth. We had both chashu shoyu and asari shio. Also like how they do their chashu, thin tender slice flavored well. My preference for noodles in thin side aldente and they did that well. Had been here few years ago and I was glad it still hasn't changed! read more
