If I could give negative stars, I would. My daughter adopted a puppy from Hinde, and our experience was heartbreaking from start to finish. We were originally told we would be meeting one puppy, but when we arrived, we were introduced to a different one. Told she would be a better fit. We instantly fell in love and adopted her. Shortly after bringing her home, she was diagnosed with a grade 6 heart murmur caused by a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). We emailed the rescue multiple times asking if they could help in any way--whether through fundraising, grants, or other resources to help cover the cost of her lifesaving surgery. Weeks passed with no response. When they finally replied after we posted a comment on Facebook, they asked for our vet's info so they could call to get her info from the cardiologist (according to our vet no one called). They also told us they were having a meeting to discuss options. We reached out again. A week later their only offer was to return her. We replied we wanted help with fundraising etc. for surgery - no reply backAGAIN! During the four weeks of them playing games, our puppy went into respiratory distress from congestive heart failure. Despite our veterinarian's best efforts, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to euthanize her at just five months old. After everything we went through, we requested a refund of our adoption fee. Once again, we received no response. Our experience left us feeling completely abandoned during one of the most devastating times our family has ever faced. We encourage anyone considering adopting from this rescue to ask detailed questions about the medical evaluations and health history of the dogs before adopting. Just horrible and Pamela Hinde is very dishonest and an outright liar! Picked up the dog on a Sunday afternoon at Lenni Park per Pamela. Dog was not housetrained as advertised and no veterinary report given. When I called and told Pamela how unhappy we were and how she lied to us about the dog being house broken she was unreceptive. We returned the dog early Tuesday am to her husband Mike as Pamela was "unavailable". Asked for my refund Tuesday and Wednesday and was ignored. Per all of these negative reviews, that is her MO...radio silence as soon as her dishonesty is found out. Her response to me after telling her the dog was not housetrained was "I always left the back door open "! This is laughable! No house training plan.in the world is to leave a household door "open". Pamela did not venmo the $350 we paid for the dog despite repeated communication. I had to file a dispute with venmo that we need refund because Hinde did not fairly represent the dog. I updated my review to add more details and pictures. Last week, we met an adorable dog named Bob who was being fostered. Bob seemed like the perfect fit for us, but we had some concerns about his health. His tail appeared to be broken and he had a growth on his back leg. His foster mom told us that he is bothered when his tail is touched (it was clearly kinked/broken). Just to be clear, we could CARE LESS that it was broken as long as he wasn't in pain. We also also noticed a small mole/growth on this rear leg. We reached out to the rescue to inquire about whether their vet would address these issues or if potential adopters would be responsible. The next day, we were told that Bob had a tear from a previous surgery that was being looked at by the vet and owner Pam. This came as a surprise to us, as there was no mention of any surgery when we met him. After a few days of trying to follow up on Bob's condition and express interest in meeting another dog, the rescue abruptly stopped communicating with us (previously very responsive). We even reached out via social media and text messaged Pam the owner, but received no response. It came to surprise that NOBODY wanted to give us an update.. It was very odd... Concerned by this lack of transparency, we did some research online and found many alarming/negative reviews about the rescue on Yelp. We had been eager to adopt or foster a dog from Hindes, but the lack of communication and not addressing questions really made us think twice about adopting from this rescue. Bob's foster has a beautiful home and Bob seems to be very happy with her and her family (and their dog). I don't think she had anything to do with this at all. I think this is the rescue got startled because I'm inquiring about his health (another negative signal) . All they had to do was communicate- it truly wasn't a hard ask. I adopted a kitten from Hinde's in early October, to be a companion to my resident cat. I am not from the area, had no prior knowledge of their reputation, and did not do my due diligence of looking into them before adopting my kitten. I could write an essay about my experiences with and my thoughts about Hinde's but I will try to hit the main points. Here are a few things to note for anyone who is interested in adopting from them. 1. They do not provide proper vet care for the animals they have. They may or may not give you vet records, but even if they do, the records I received were hard to trust. It was just a sheet filled in with no vet names or official vet notes. 2. Most of the animals, or at least cats, are not spayed/neutered. Pamela said she doesn't believe cats should be spayed before six months because of something to do with hormones. I didn't realize how expensive and demanding the process of getting a cat spayed is. Be prepared for the cost of the procedure and the two weeks (if everything goes smoothly) of careful post-op requirements. 3. They take in a lot of animals. Combining this with the lack of proper vet care, assume the animal you get is sick, even if the animal doesn't look sick. My kitten had a stubborn upper respiratory infection, possibly feline herpes, tapeworms, a parasite, evidence of formerly having fleas, and has an indicator of early kidney disease. These were not vet costs I was anticipating. Here are a couple of my thoughts of the organization as a whole. 1. It is great that they are taking animals in who would otherwise be put down, but they need to understand their financial limit and properly take care of the animals they do take in. 2. The adoption process is a joke, they don't call your references or check with your landlord (if you are renting). They want these animals out of their care and likely do not care who they adopt the animals to. I didn't even get a copy of the adoption contract. Overall, I would not recommend adopting from this organization. There are plenty of great animals available at more legitimate and reputable rescues. Please save yourself the trouble and possible heartbreak. read more

I have fostered multiple puppies from Hinde's. Some had worms (as puppies do) but I was given a vet to go to, medication to dispense, and a director to contact. One puppy had seizures early on and had to be rushed to the vet. She ended up okay. ALL dogs were cared for and healthy once treated and found their forever homes. When you foster or rescue a puppy from an overcrowded shelter, they could be from anywhere. The woods, a shed, a barn, etc... These dogs can have problems. All dogs can. They are rescues. We have fostered dogs and adopted a kitten from Hinde's Animal Safe Haven. I have loved all of them! Their events are fun and they are always looking for new ways to help our four-legged friends! I want to preface this by saying I appreciate and applaud all animal rescues do to save unwanted and neglected animals. It is because of this organization that I have my pup. This review is also long overdue. i adopted my puppy back in October, and his photos appeared to be a healthy dog. i applied, and in no less than a day, I was called to pick him up. They did not contact my references. When I went to meet him, I was met with a balding sickly looking puppy and was informed he was recovering from mange. Ok no big deal that happens with dogs from shelters. During his first week, his health quickly declined, and i was met with copious veterinarian bills. Out of concern for the MANY dogs being fostered in his foster home and some of his conditions being contagious, I reached out to the rescue via email (no one answered the phones & voicemail was full) to inform them. Days later I received an email back saying they would call me. They did not. I reached out again a couple of times, including the foster mom, and no one returned my efforts. I read through some other similar reviews after the fact, and I am incredibly disheartened. In the mission statement via their website it states, "We are committed to finding AMAZING forever families for neglected, homeless, and unwanted pets. Our fosters work hard with each and every pet to prepare them for adoption." I am well aware that my dog came from a kill shelter in West Virginia, with conditions caused by the environment there, but his condition should have been noticed by the rescue, his foster mom, and their own veterinarians, prior to his adoption. Instead, he was neglected, and I was left to deal with a sick puppy and a large, unexpected expense. I've had him since late October, and he only became healthy within the latter months. The only preparation my puppy received was being adopted out as fast as possible, without taking care of his ailments. I beg that this "rescue" steps up and takes better care of their animals. We adopted Yogi from Hinde's Animal Safe Haven in December 2017. I have to say it was the most positive experience I ever could have hoped for. Yogi's foster mom really took the time to get to know each member of the litter and shared that info with us. The process from 1st email to bringing him home was easy and extremely professional. He has been a happy, healthy and very loving pup from day one. Months later we adopted another Australian Kelpie from another agency and that was hands down the worst experience overall. I want to start this review off by stating this is the third rescue I have fostered through. I have had 3 rescue dogs of my own as well- so I am not new to the dog world OR working with rescues. This was the first time I worked with Hinde Animal Safe Haven and let me tell you..it will certainly be my last. I am heartbroken just thinking about all the dogs that are not getting the proper care. I am not knocking this rescues intentions- I truly think they want to save them all (as do I) but unfortunately, their eagerness over looks the current dogs they have and their needs. I was contacted less than an hour within submitting my foster application (definitely the first red flag). I knew this was strange but I continued on with the process as I always have the dogs needs in mind. I explained that I lived in a small apartment in Philadelphia but would do whatever to make sure the dog was safe. I was told the dog was "medium size" and no issues what so ever about her. The other strange part is they also did not even know her correct name!! They currently have the wrong name for the poor dog posted on their website at moment- she is listed under her sisters name. Needless to say- I was told she needed to be transferred from her previous foster that night (or the next morning). As soon as the old foster mom dropped off the dog to me - she said "oh man, I hope you don't have stairs. She is terrified of them." I replied that two sets of them were the only way into my apartment. I was left with a "67 lb dog" which I think she was a bit lighter but she would not even go near the stairs. She fought me on trying to pick her up and all 5'2 of me did my best to get her up the two flights. I texted Stephanie immediately that this was not going to work, as I HAVE to use these stairs anytime I let the dog in or out of my apartment. For two days I was pushed around by the rescue (Stephanie and Pam- honestly, Stephanie was always super kind, Pam on the other hand...)they tried to have me swap foster dogs with another woman who had previously posted about the dog she had needing a backyard and lots of space to get energy out...once again, I live in a second floor studio apartment in center city Philadelphia. After very little help and lots of run around, I finally tried to find help myself. I posted in Facebook groups where the light was finally shone on how poorly run this rescue is. I almost didn't want to believe it until I received numerous private messages from people about Pam (the director) and how awful they were. My heart is broken for these dogs. They deserve so much more and they deserve people who truly take the time to place them in homes where they can feel safe. I am currently working with others who have had similar experiences with this rescue- it is FAR too many people. read more

They absolutely refused to take the dog back. After much heartache and consults with multiple vets, we were forced to euthanize the dog. I emailed them multiple times to tell them this would be our only option if they wouldn't take the dog back. They said no and eventually stopped responding to my emails. They should not be allowed to be in business. It never occurred to us to check Yelp reviews for a rescue. I wish we had. There are many reputable rescues out there. I'm just going to state facts and let others decide how to interpret. I am fostering an adorable Chihuahua mix named Peanut. Hinde is in PA. I am in NYC. I was told people usually need to bring pets to their approved vet, but that they'd work with me on funding since I'm far away. If I hadn't taken Peanut, he would have been left behind. I was told I should consult Pam before I make any veterinarian decisions. I was told Peanut was in good health, had all his shots, and was neutered. Peanut is not neutered. The only vaccination he had is rabies. One week after I took Peanut, he was coughing uncontrollably. He also was making an alarming noise which I later learned was called "reverse sneezing." I took him to the vet. They told me he has a simple kennel cough, but also that he hasn't been tested for Lyme disease. Because I have another dog, I had her checked out as well to make sure she didn't catch Peanut's cold. Vet bill #1: $378 The next day, Peanut started limping. As the day progressed, he stopped walking on his hind legs. He balanced on his front legs. He would not pee, he would not eat. I called Pam and received no answer. I took him to the vet again as this seemed like major cause for concern. While I was there I learned he had tested positive for Lyme disease and for worms and they wanted to run follow-up tests. I called Pam to get approval, she told me to just get the typical 10 day antibiotics for his Lyme disease. The vet told me the Lyme disease antibiotics were 28 days, and that it's possible the leg issues were due to Lyme disease, but it could also be beginnings of paralysis. Pam told me to just do the Lyme disease antibiotics and it would probably go away. The vet told me it might, but if in fact it were due to something else and I waited for the Lyme disease meds to kick in, he could go paralyzed. Pam still told me the vet was just trying to nickel and dime me. I decided to go with the vet rather than Pam who was speaking based on anecdotal evidence and couldn't even see Peanut in order to diagnose him. Vet bill #2: $327 This included medication for worms and antibiotics. Since worms are contagious, I had to give my current dog medication preemptively. As part of the follow up tests, I had to have another urine test done: $134 Total vet bill: $839. They won't cover a dime. When I originally discussed this foster situation, they said they'd work with me. When I talked to her before the second vet appointment, I told her I'd happily cover a couple hundred dollars but if it gets higher I will need help. She said "of course. If it becomes that high we will run a GoFundMe." It became that high, so I consulted Teresa who said to send Pam the receipts via email as that's usually how they handle it. I did so, called Pam twice, texted her 3 times, Facebook messaged her, and no response. Now, even though they said they'd work with me, to send receipts, they won't cover a dime. I offered a compromise - just reimburse me what your vet would have charged you. Pam: we have a line of credit with our vet. Me: so you do pay him then. Pam: I told you not to use another vet. Me: do you pay your vet? Just reimburse me that much. Pam: we will never allow a foster from your distance again. Because of this, lives will be lost. I know what I said and so does God. This conversation is over. The answer is no. Well... (1) If so many lives will be lost because they won't allow fosters from my distance, that means they do have fosters from my distance frequently. In this case, I refuse to believe they have never reimbursed anyone. (2) If not, then she is telling me lives will be lost, just to guilt me. (3) They said they'd work with me. I offered to compromise and accept what their vet would take. Pam told me her vet would charge $60 to do the Lyme test and the 10-day cycle of antibiotics for Lyme. If I had only done those tests, Peanut wouldn't be able to walk. Kate is trying to get Pam to reimburse me what their vet would charge for the necessary tests - which means they do pay him (shocker!) . So, why can't they at least reimburse me that much? Perhaps she saw me being far away as an opportunity to not have to pay for anything, since it would be on a good-faith reimbursement. (4) I was told he was fixed, he is not. (5) The money is one thing. How she spoke to me as if I were misbehaving by getting Peanut the best treatment is another ("This conversation is over. The answer is no." Really? Am I your disobedient child?) But endangering my current dog by misrepresenting his health is crossing the line so far that this organization should not be allowed to exist. Lastly Pam gave me an ultimatum because I'm "being so difficult" - either return Peanut to them by Monday (it's Thursday) or adopt him. I wonder if they really treat their animals this badly, or purposely act incompetent so fosters don't want to return dogs to them. Either way, over my dead body is she taking this sweet boy back. read more

Horrible experience adopting a puppy with Parvo. The dog was very sick, and it was nearly impossible to get in touch with the rescue in order to get care for the dog. The phone number listed in the adoption paperwork was not in service, so we had no way of reaching the organizers. Took a large number of emails, and texts to all the people we had contacted along the way to reach anyone who could help. This was a horrible experience, both for us, and, more importantly, for the animals they claim to be helping. I would strongly advise anyone considering adopting from here to consider another rescue. Their mission is good, but the path to hell is paved with bad intentions. With such a poorly run shelter, I worry that perhaps it's doing more harm than help. read more

Read through all reviews to get full picture. Questionable and unsavory practices. There are many good shelters with integrity, why involve with this one and open yourself to frustration, bogus "code red" alerts to drive business, or worse, the heartbreak of adopting a sickly or ill-suited, potentially dangerous animal? That hurts the people but even more, the dog who becomes marked. I can attest to Hinde's use of "bait and switch" tactic, mentioned by another reviewer. Again, read all the reviews; notice how a clump of glowing ones follow some very distressing ones. There will be good matches, law of averages, but note patterns in the negatives, shared experiences, some for ineptitude, others dubious business practices. Something is clearly awry. You can go directly to the rural shelters in WV and elsewhere and adopt for less than half of Hinde's fee. The shelters' adoption fees include neuter/spay and vaccinations. Shelter adoption counselors will have observed the animal and can advise re: personality/ suitability based on their interactions; you can meet the animal without high pressure selling tactics designed to exploit your emotions. Hinde's business model is essentially like the thrift store pickers who skim and resell. You can do better, whether dealing directly with a rural shelter or selecting a suburban shelter group who is straightforward, operates with integrity and has best interests of the animals at its core. read more

I can not stress this enough, do not get involved with this "rescue." The entire experience seemed to be set up to be a bait and switch, intended to get us to take a dog in with little to no information, make a commitment, pay money, and only then find out the hidden truth about the dog's medical issues despite having asked directly about medical info previously. Luckily our dog did not have as severe issues as some other reviewers have reported. Specifically we were being pushed into an adoption when we had committed only to a foster with a possibility to adopt. Before the agreed upon time had expired we were pressured to pay or lose the dog to another "potential adopter."When asked to have the dog's vet records we were told it was too much of a hassle to get them together for us, but she was "fine" - turns out she was lymes positive and had not been retested as needed and had also missed all of her booster vaccines. We also were not provided any info on her litter which she "may have had 4 months ago." Instead of trying to be upfront the place seemed to want to hide what was going on until after they took our money. Then the "director" got mad and repeatedly harassed me by phone and text. Even after money had been paid for a spay and chip appointment at their "vet" who also apparently can't stand them, they cancelled the appointment and tried to steal my money. It was paid by credit card though so the charge was easily disputed since the service was not rendered. Only after all of this did I look at yelp and see all of these other horrific reviews. I also looked up the public court docket to see that this place has been sued a ton and is being chased non stop by collectors. So don't take my word for it, just looked at the publicly available info which I unfortunately failed to do first. The only good thing to come of all this is my dog is a total sweetheart. They refused to cover the bills even though it happened under their care and threatened me with a lawsuit. I get that a lot of rescue dogs get certain infections and illnesses, but the dog I adopted had worms right off the bat and upon her first vet trip, was confirmed to have parvo. I have nothing but a sincere plead of not working with this group. Everything about this group is not only a terrible experience but a disgrace that they are even still open. Not only will they try to steal money that by law they owe you, they are a disgrace to the animals that they pretend to "care about" . We got a pup from them right before Covid happened in November of 2019. For some odd reason during that pick up they are supposed to have paper work regarding what they done with the dog but had nothing when delivered which is completely illegal for a rescue to do in the state of Pennsylvania. Three days later she started coming down on a sickness and we took her to the vet to get checked out and was told we they couldn't do much until we provided paper work regarding what they had done with her so they aren't giving her too much of something that could kill her. "Mind you it took us almost 4 months to get this paperwork." So the next day she got worse so we ended up taking her to their vet which was over an hour away and before he even diagnosed the dog he already asked if she was from the shipment of dogs that came in the day we got her. He already knew what she had as other dogs came to him already and saying they had Parvo which is deadly to pups. I asked to get blood work for her so we can show them what she had and he told us it was not part of the rescues plan with them and we had to pay out of pocket to get it done. When we provided that information they Argued with us stating that it ain't true the vet was supposed to just give them the bill for everything. "This shows bad communication even with their own vet" Then also proceed to tell us he is wrong and she doesn't have parvo because they gave her a shot for it. Third day we took her to the emergency room as she was pooping out a lot of blood. We went there got them to take a blood test to show that she had parvo and even with that information they tried arguing with us again. "This basically showing they have no care for animals at all as they want to argue with professionals because they don't want to put the money up to take care of the dogs." We had to keep her there for three days which was $3000 since they the rescue would not communicate with us and gave us no choice to save the dog with our own money. After those three days they ended up taking her over night as she still needed to be on IV a bit longer because we could not afford anymore money for this. After that night though she recovered very quickly and thank goodness we did just take her to the emergency room as they said she would of died if we didn't. Then another issue we had with them is with the adoption papers as it took way too long to even get this from these people so we would officially own the dog we worked hard to keep alive. We did not receive that until two months after as well. The last issue was reimbursing us our money which by law they owe one third to a max of $1500 for any medical care we provided for the dog during the ten day program before adopting. Now mind you not including Covid situation this took until now while I was making this Review to get our $1000 they owe us. So if i were to do the math it took over 9 months to get the money. Which annoys me the most that I was very nice to the owner telling her that even though she did say on text which is regarded as a written statement that she would pay us the full money, I did just told them to pay us $1000 and told them we will make a payment plan for what ""they could afford"" and gave them time to not worry about it to spend time with family before worrying about us paying us back. This was the worse mistake and should of had them pay me back full since I had a written statement she would. No communication at all and just big headaches with these people trying to get our money. The worse is when I finally get this person to answer me she had the audacity to tell me that she is only paying us back because she thinks we have money issues and trying to be a sassy person about it. By law these people owed us that money and she try to think I would be too stupid to notice that. By all means please save your time and do not work with these people as shown they do not care for these animals nor you. They will not communicate with you and will try to steal you're money. Please find another rescue that not only care abut you but the well being of these animals. OK - I need to update my review. I just spoke with Pam the director and realize that my experience isn't the norm. It was "the perfect storm" scenario with a lot of inexperienced volunteers not doing their jobs and not working with the adopted families at the time that we adopted. Our adoption didn't happen at all the way it was suppose to or the way that this organization normally runs. I am getting all the paperwork now from the director so that we have as much as information as they do on our sweet dog, Lilly. Bottom line - all rescue organizations deserve our respect and appreciation for helping our animal friends who are helpless without human involvement. I was frustrated and irritated at the lack of communication but a 15 minute call with Pam has cleared the air. They are an incredibly busy Ground Zero rescue organization that saves animals with no time left - in immediate danger. read more

As far as adoptions go, this was a quick, yet thorough application process which allowed me to find the perfect pet (in this case a dog -Levi!!!!). I am a fan of Hinde Rescue. The people they use for fostering are dog lovers and love and train and care for their fosters as if they were their own fur babies. Shout out to Pamela Kay, my foster who cared for Levi. The organization is providing a valuable service by saving animals one-by-one and finding perfect homes for these cute souls...young and old. I wish I could take them all!!!!! Thank you Hinde. I have fostered and adopted through Hinde's. The directors are super helpful and knowledgeable. My dog Ziggy was a rescue who needed a lot of attention when he was found...he was starving and malnourished. He was provided with everything be needed and is the sweetest dog. We ended up adopting him because we fell in love with his demeanor! I asked a lot of questions through out the whole adoption process and they helped me every step of the way. I have adopted 3 dogs from Hinde's over the last 4 years. Our first was adopted in August 2014 and it was love at first sight. She was 6 months old and had some baggage related to crates, which we recognized quickly and did away with the crate. We adopted our next girl in May 2016, when she was roughly two years old. This little girl came with a LOT of baggage that my husband, kids and I took on. It has taken about 2 years and she is a beautiful happy girl! Our last adoption was in July of 2016, we fostered 4 pups and decided to adopt one. He came with no baggage. During our time with the 4 pups, we had a scary episode with the biggest pup and I reached out to Hinde's who responded immediately to the situation and helped me through so that he could go on to be adopted. So I filled out an application to adopt a puppy and was in contact with a woman through email about the puppy she is fostering. Never got her name she was labeled as "volunteer" After some time back and fourth giving personal information about my children and myself, she tells me that the dog was not a good fit for me. Had not heard anything back, till Kate Jaquith messaged me insinuating I can't afford a dog and that the director knows me and my mom. Clearly does not know me at all and I am truly appalled they would treat someone this way that wants to give a puppy a loving home! Kate jaquith is my Ex's friend of many years and clearly has no idea what's she's talking about. I knew her a few years back and she had a dog chester that she hardly took care of or payed attention to from what I could tell. If the people who foster there animals are anything like her, I would not want to adopt from this rescue anyway! read more

Beware when adopting from here! I adopted a dog two months ago, who I now am unable to keep due to behaviors I was unaware of, I am at risk of getting evicted for the dogs behaviors. And I have been calling and e-mailing and have received no response. They make you sign a form saying if you cannot keep the dog you must return it to Hinde, but you cannot reach anyone to do so. Very concerning lack of communication- about the dogs true behaviors and lack of being able to reach someone to surrender the dog because I cannot meet her needs due to dogs separation anxiety and being furloughed. read more

Adopted this sweet boy who was rescued from the hurricanes and flooding down in Texas. He was only supposed to be a foster but we failed after 8 hours Hindes is awesome to work with and they care for so many fur babies to get them good homes. read more

Worst experience ever. Never communicate back. I paid extra for a spayed dog and was not spayed when I picked her up. I have been trying to get my money back for 4 months now. I would never recommend this business they are awful. I am trying to see of I can take legal action. read more

Bad experience. Adopted the dog on the 19th of December. By the 21st he wasn't eating or drinking, was vomiting diareah and lethargic. Was told they had medical records, tried to get them, only got a text message picture of a receipt that you couldn't make out the name of the vet. When I asked I was told they were only a 3rd party adoption agency. My advice is to do some research when adopting. read more
