I love this store. Took my teen-aged daughter in to pick paint for her bedroom and she walked out just thrilled about what a nice place it is. Elizabeth, the color specialist (?), took such good care of us. And she was just lovely to deal with. We have relied on Steve and his good advice for years as we have painted and re-painted the rooms in our house. The difference in having a store like this, as opposed to having to google answers to my questions - to help out the folks at the big hardware chains - is what makes "shopping local" the treat that it is. Please be kind to our home town merchants. Not every visit is perfect (I read some other comments) but we are so lucky to have options outside of the big box stores. We spent well over $100,000 at Hingham Lumber for home reno materials, including a full set of kitchen cabinets. Going to Hingham Lumber for kitchen cabinets was a horrible experience and a big mistake. The Hingham Lumber designer mismeasured for more than half the cabinets had them made wrong. Rather than fixing their mistakes, the HL designer and cabinet department manager stonewalled us and the manager subjected me to verbally and physically abusive behavior. Due to the HL designer's mismeasurements, an entire wall of cabinets was not long enough to fit the space. To avoid weeks of delay, we agreed to adjust the placement of cabinets in our kitchen rather than having these cabinets redone. Also, the upper cabinets on the same wall didn't line up with the lowers as they were supposed to. We had repeatedly told the HL designer our design and space required they line up. When, after installation, we found the upper cabinets didn't line up, the designer said that - regardless of what we wanted - she had deliberately designed the cabinets to not line up because it was "customary". Again, to avoid weeks of delay, we agreed to have only one upper cabinet at the end remade with an extended section on one side. Because of Hingham Lumber's mistakes our kitchen doesn't look as good as it should have. The HL designer also mismeasured three lower cabinets that had to fit together between a wall and a load bearing post. They were too long to fit in the space. She told us to have our contractor cut into the load bearing post to deal with her mistakes! The HL designer ordered a back panel for these cabinets that was too long, with completely wrong trimwork. The crown moldings for the cabinets didn't arrive with the rest of the order. The HL designer said she forgot to order them. Then it got worse. The HL designer scheduled a revisit to our home. When she came, she brought a man she introduced as the manager of the Hingham Lumber cabinet department. Together, the HL designer and manager tried to blame our contractor, and then us, for the designer's mismeasurements. I reminded them the HL designer was the person who measured for and ordered the cabinets. Then, the six foot four male manager (more than a foot taller than I) suddenly stepped forward to stand toe-to-toe with me. His face turned red, he shook his finger right in my face and he shouted that Hingham Lumber wasn't going to pay to redo the cabinets they had mismeasured. I told the HL manager to move away from me, but he didn't. My husband shouted at him to get away from me, but he didn't. I had to start to step forward to get him to step back and finally get away from me. The HL manager finally agreed to take responsibility to have 4 of the 11 mismeasured cabinets remade. He said it would take four to six weeks to deliver them. The HL designer had previously told us it would take two weeks for delivery if any items needed to be remade. I asked the manager if his longer time period was in retaliation for me refusing to accept his bullying. He didn't answer. A week later, when we'd heard nothing from the designer, we contacted her. She hadn't even ordered the replacement cabinets. A week after that, a Hingham Lumber employee called us. This HL employee wanted to know if we were going to file action against Hingham Lumber regarding their manager's behavior. This HL employee then said any idea the designer and manager had acted inappropriately was only my "perception". I told him there were witnesses to the HL manager's behavior. He then asked me what I wanted. I said I wanted Hingham Lumber to order the cabinets that had to be remade right away and give a delivery date so our contractor could schedule his time. I also said I wanted Hingham Lumber to reimburse us for our contractor's charge for having to install cabinets a second time. Hingham Lumber still didn't order the replacement cabinets we needed. In desperation, I contacted the cabinet maker, Tedd Wood, directly. I asked for Tedd Wood's help in getting the cabinets we needed. Within 48 hours of my call to Tedd Wood, Hingham Lumber finally agreed the corrected cabinets would arrive timely and gave me a delivery date. (Thank you, Tedd Wood!!!) Hingham Lumber has never reimbursed us for the extra contractor fee we paid for Hingham Lumber's mistakes. Instead, the store billed us for $700 (plus interest) for miscellaneous cabinet parts, including some which arrived long after the cabinets were installed. This amount is far less than the extra fee our contractor charged us for installing the cabinets twice. Neither the store owner nor any of the HL employees involved ever apologized to me for the verbally and physically abusive behavior of the HL manager. We're now considering whether to take action to collect the contractor fee Hingham Lumber owes us and more, since Hingham Lumber seems to care more about avoiding the consequences of their bad behavior than treating their customers well and fairly. read more

One visit they put a strip on bottom to correct the misalignment and the second visit tightened the pneumatic pump. I don't mind the fee, however if your door /window manager had been more professional and less sarcastic , it would have gone a long way. read more

Don't be confused that Hingham Lumber isn't in Hingham. It used to be but moved a few years ago to larger digs in neighboring Cohasset. This was a regular hangout for us when we first bought our house and were gutting and re-doing multiple rooms. Yes, you can get lumber here but also just about anything else you'd need to re-do, re-finish, build or re-model anything. Have a project you're working on for your house, barn or garage? This is the place to go. The store is big but not as big as one of the big-box home improvement stores and for that I'm grateful. You get a more manageable, more personalized experience. The staff quickly get to know you and your project. In the paint department they carry the popular brand of Benjamin Moore paints and also have a most helpful paint guru on staff who, for free, will help you mix, match and select the right paint and colors for any room in your house. Sometimes it's just plain helpful to get an objective design opinion. Thankfully the days of having all that hardcore work done on our house is behind us. But I do have a new project I'm working on. I've been back to pick up paint samples for starters and I'm already excited about working with the staff here again. read more

The woman in a black hoodie at the lumber yard this afternoon was borderline rude. Walked in and waited my turn. Looked towards me and looked back at her sidekick, tittered and said "Do you see anything? I don't see anything!" and they both laughed. She was rude and unprofessional as I sought her help asking for a piece of wood for my decking. When it came to payment not a word was exchanged or said but as I already had her figured out that is not shocking. On the way out her accomplice checked my receipt and asked if I had anything else which is a stupid question as I had already paid why would I have anything else? . I'm down the road from them but Lowes and Home Depot is where my money would be spent going forward. read more

I bought a Anderson Door from Hingham Lumber at there section of misc items. So lets just say the special order door had parts with or without it in a smaller than average size! When I went to put it together I noticed there was no drain cap for the door, so I went in and it was painless and easy once I met with Chris up at the warehouse, he found the hard to find size drip cap ! The next day I also needed a spinal for the door, once again Chris was amazing! Door is on and I can not say enough about the customer service At this store! We stopped in the sales office in the warehouse and where we were greeted by Jamie! she was very eager to help us out due to it being our first time there! She was extremely helpful ! I went in looking for lumber and a few other things for some basic carpentry projects. As a 22 year old female, I'm probably not their typical customer, though I do have a degree in civil engineering, and I didn't see the same kind of sexism at Lowes. While they generally had what I needed, I found the staff quite condescending. When I asked a question (about the difference between coarse and fine screw threads), I was given information that proved to be completely incorrect. I was also told 2x2 was not a common lumber size. I paid for them to cut the lumber down for me, and it was imprecisely cut and meant I missed out on end pieces I could have used for other projects. A few weeks later, I was out of screws and stopped by to get more, since it is more convenient than Lowes, and was asked if I was "trying again". At least they remember their customers... Normally, I like to support the smaller, more local businesses, but I also don't like dealing with out-of-touch and sexist employees. Maybe it's time they realized men aren't the only ones who can use power tools. read more

Bought 50 K worth of windows and doors. Good Service. Had an issue with a large window that needed mulling/two windows attached. They eventually offered to do the mulling in their shop and we are so pleased with it. We broke a large door panel on the job site..... UgH..... so, Hingham managed to have Marvin windows replace that panel free of charge. it would have cost us 1000 or so. I hope they continue to be our go-to store. read more

Had a grill delivered this morning that was supposed to be delivered "later pm". Unfortunately this was a surprise gift that is clearly a surprise no more. Very disappointed! Was also told that I would be called ahead of time and that did not happen either. I called the person who is in charge of deliveries, explained the mishap and he didn't appear to care one bit about ruining the Christmas surprise. We have always been fans of Hingham Lumber..that is until now. In the past twenty years we have purchased three kitchens in three different homes from them; in addition to many windows, doors, and other items. They have always been easy to work with and the customer service has been great..until now. Now the paint on our third kitchen is bubbling, peeling and cracking-which has a lifetime warranty. We have called, emailed and gone into the store and have received absolutely no response. Dave Ross, in their kitchen department has repeatedly promised to send a rep from Medallion out to our home, but has not..this has been going on since FEBRUARY..it is now September and still nothing. After sending pictures and waiting for a response from him for weeks..we emailed him and he said from the photos there is damage from water/cleaning and is not covered..this email was sent back literally within a minute after asking him to either send a rep out or we will bring the fronts of the cabinets in..When we went in there even one of the female kitchen reps looked at the pictures and stated this is obviously a problem with the paint/company..the defects are different..some are peeling, some are bubbling and some are cracking..so disgusted with his this has been handled..and will unfortunately be taking our business elsewhere..they no longer have the great customer service we were accustomed to throughout the years. read more

My husband and I recently moved to the area and our contractor for our home purchased all our lumber and other materials for the construction of our house at Hingham Lumber. As a result, I went to their store to take a look at their Benjamin Moore paint swatches to pick out our wall colors. Unfortunately, they were out of all pint size, sample paint cans due to supply chain issues. I completely understood and they said to check back later in the week. When I had called and asked if their pint size containers were back in stock, the color specialist asked me what color I was looking for. Since I had several (5-6) in mind I told her I was unsure. I kindly asked again if they had any of the pint size cans so I could stop by she then proceeded to scream at me and said she couldn't answer my question until I told her what color I was looking for. I was taken aback by her sudden explosive anger and lack of professionalism. I was in the car with my kids and since she was on speaker phone, they heard the conversation and asked why she was yelling and so angry. I'm not sure if she was having a horrible day but I have never been yelled at like that by a sales associate. We ended up going to the ACE hardware store in Hanover and asked our contractor to pick up our paint at that location. read more

They feature Benjamin Moore paint, and have an area to sit and look through books, even including a kids' area with coloring books. The staff is friendly without being overbearing. read more

Over the past 36 years living in Cohasset, I have relied on them for both a large renovation and everything else from choosing paint to having small items of millwork performed as needed. AVOID!!! We purchased kitchen cabinets from Hingham Lumber. The salesperson measured incorrectly and we had to adjust our design because they arrived and did not fit properly. After a few years, the finish wore off the cabinets and look TERRIBLE. We brought a door in and a sales associate stated that it was a manufacturing defect. Then, Bill Baxter, the manager, sent the door to the manufacturer and they said it was normal wear and tear and was not covered under warranty. We tried to speak with the owner of this family owned business and were informed that the owner does not give out his email address to customers and that we could not speak to him. I have been using Hingham Lumber for over 25 years and have never had any issues up until now. I brought in a paint color to be matched. -I even left the paint chip there overnight for them to work on because they couldn't match it right away. The women called to say my paint was ready, but the color match was ridiculous and so off. She didn't see the color mis-match at all, and thought it was perfect. I won't be using Hingham Lumber for any more paint; they just don't seem to have the ability to correctly match a color. read more

do not buy kitchen cabinets here. bill baxter runs it and he can't measure at all. he measured my cabinets wrong on 3 different occasions. my kitchen took over 8 months to complete because of his incompetence. they are not proactive. they do not apologize for their mistakes. i spent over 30 k there and would never recommend them to anyone. run don't walk to get away from them. have heard so many better stories from other kitchen companies. read more

I have often shopped at Hingham Lumber for items needed at my home, as well as at my office. While the prices are higher, and in some cases extraordinarily higher, I patronized the store as a 'local' business and for the customer service - which I expected would be better than at a larger store. I was wrong. In October of 2014, we purchased a new Ariens snowblower at Hingham Lumber, and began to use it for the first time in mid-January 2015. Before the middle of February, however, the unit failed and we sought repair at Hingham Lumber. Our requests were not only dismissed, but we were discouraged from seeking repair services and it was suggested that we find a repair person 'in the community.' Upon contacting the Ariens company, we learned that the failure was uncommon and covered under warranty, and appeared to be caused by the improper overtightening of hardware by the person assembling the unit at the dealer - Hingham Lumber Company. When presenting Hingham Lumber personnel with the e-mail from Ariens, we were again dismissed with the wave of a hand, and our e-mail was refused. We were further informed that we should remember that "Hingham Lumber is first and foremost a lumber company after all." That was over a week ago, and Hingham Lumber NEVER made any effort to resolve this problem. Having already had over 8 feet of snow in about a month, we cannot risk waiting any longer and have sought repair by another authorized Ariens dealer. Prior to this experience, Hingham Lumber Company was our 'go to' store for most needs, and this is no longer the case. Do not purchase anything at Hingham Lumber if you ever expect to need further services from them. Their message that Hingham Lumber Co. is first and foremost a lumber company was received by us quite clearly. We will never again purchase a single item from this business. read more

Although the Contractor used another vendor for the new build, Hingham Lumber, when called upon for many items, paint, and our built-ins provided a very pleasant, reliable service and great products.
